I've ordered food from Colonia BBQ several times and it's always freshly made and ready in a timely manner. I usually get a whole BBQ chicken and you can get a variety of sides. Don't forget to get some hot and BBQ sauce to go with your meal. The chicken is so good and it makes my stomach happy lol. It's located in small strip mall but it's clean, the staff is friendly and you get good quality service. I love their food and I like the fact that I can also order online and customize my order. Ate there last week with a group of six and we all shared apps and entrees. This was a great meal. First, the aroma of the bbq fills the air when you come in. They seem to be doing a lot of take out, but there is a dining room with 6 or 7 tables. We were greated and served by Alexandria, who was friendly and attentive. She made some recommendations that did not disappoint. The sauteed chicken with garlic sauce had tons of flavor. We tried all the empanadas : chicken, beef, and spinach-cheese and they were excellent. Super-flaky and big and tasted great. We also got the beef short ribs and they were tender the way i needed. The bbq chicken and pork rib combo is another great dish. The Pork cubes dish has plenty of chorizo with loin chunks and sauteed veggies. Everything came with a brocolli, cauliflower and carrot medly that was cooked perfectly. I hate overcooked veg, and these were just right. The rice side dish was large and fluffy and I kept going back for more of the black beans side. This place is worth a return, the standouts being the garlic chicken and crispy empanadas. read more

Love the food. Service is fine. Don't love that they definitely prefer that you take to go orders. But other than that I love this place.

One of our rotations.. garlic chicken and rice is so saucy and flavorful! Always fresh and they give a HUGE amount of food. Leftovers for days. read more

I've been going there on and off for years. Lately the food is the best it's ever been. Hope the quality stays where it is.

Very nice people. Grilled chicken a little hard and too much seasoning. Actually I would say there is a lot of seasoning on all the meat which makes this not a good dinner spot when I'm feeding my mom. I like it though. Veggies are good and potatoes and salad dressing. Soup is so good. All yummy. read more

The food is not good. The chicken is dry and the ribs have a bland bland taste. for me never again... and whatever you do don't order the mixed vegetables. It's like buying frozen vegetables and throwing them into a pot of water and serving them. read more

Garlic shrimp meal delivery, the shrimp was thrown on top of the onion rings , soggy onion rings all the garlic soaked in the onion rings and the shrimp was dry , this is how we received it , we called and they said they would give us new order of rings ,never mentioned to replace the whole order , for 15 dollars , the girl on the phone never apologized for this mess , just come and Pick up new Onion rings , so we are very disappointed in the meal and service , basically we are stuck with this mess . She was very adamant about it , and blamed it on the delivery , if that's the case then she admitted their guilt and you get what you get so we took your money and we don't care. Your stuck with it. We are very disappointed and we are regular customers Bad Customer Service , Great Food Don't ever order the Garlic Shrimp meal read more

We typically order for pickup. The last few times we ordered delivery they always forget the salad. This time, they forgot the salad and the food was ice cold like it was sitting there for over 30 mins before they delivered it. Took an hour to get it, and we're not far. Also before dinner time so they shouldn't have been that busy. We also paid for 2 hot sauces and only got one. Just annoying. read more

Was home alone and ordered for pick up the shrimp in garlic with sausage appetizer and the 1/2 chicken 1/2 pork ribs combo with broccoli only. I had enough food, and I'm a large eater for dinner that night and a big lunch the next day. Food was excellent, the order was correctly prepared, and was ready at the time promised. Plenty of parking in front. Wish they weren't located next to a nails place because you can smell it in the restaurant. Friendly staff. read more

AVOID IT !!!! The prices stated in the menu are not what they charge you. The check comes for much higher amounts and when questioned they stated that the prices are subject to change without notice. Great !!! What a way of cheating customers! The food was just ok (not more than that). The service was unprofessional and poor. It is sad to see how some business owners do not have any common sense and because of their practices they loose customers. We will never visit this place read more

I'm so happy to have found this place! The food is always amazing and the portions are HUGE! The calamari is probably the best I've ever had! The skirt steak is mouth watering and the sides are delicious. I haven't had anything I didnt like from there. Definitely give them a try. read more

Colonia BBQ - Humongous, delicious pieces of calamari. - Portuguese Near Me - Colonia, New Jersey

Honestly have been going here forever and their rice and lemon chicken do not disappoint. I have not sat down here in a while but when I did it was overall a good experience. The people that work there are very nice. The vibe for me is more of a pickup rather than a sit down situation but overall pretty good food. read more

Awesome tasty food outstanding pricing a must go if you want delicious Portuguese food!

My sister is new to the area and on move-in day we were all hungry and the aminous question of where to eat needed to be answered by Yelp. It didn't help that my parents are picky eaters and basically only eat Spanish food, so thank goodness for Colonia BBQ! As soon as we walked in the smokey smell of braised ribs tickled my nostrils and I knew this was the right choice. The two ladies behind the counter were very friendly and helped to answer questions about portions for the platters we were ordering. We ended up getting two chicken and ribs combination platters with a variation of fries, rice, beans and veggies as sides. The platters were done very quickly and as we took them off the counter to go home, they were already proving to be a good investment on their sheer weight! When we got home we were pleasantly surprised how great everything looked and dug right in! My picky parents did not stand a chance as they were wooed by all the bbq meats and crispy fries. This was an excellent choice for take out and I would definitely return to try other dishes! read more

I went here for lunch, this place is solid. Great food and service. I had the Garlic Shrimp dinner for one and a serradura. Both were excellent. My only complaint is the nail salon next door. I could smell it, which didn't at all put me off my food, but was a bit fumey. Luckly the have some outdoor seats which solved the problem. If you go here, get a dessert. If you don't you're doing yourself a disservice. read more

Good service and decent food with large portions. We had the Portuguese sausage with pickled veggies, pork chop served with yellow rice and fries, and beef steak with 2 eggs over easy, served with black beans and rice. I liked the flavor of the chops and sausage, but I also thought they were a tad overdone. Perhaps they shouldn't cook them as long. We also ordered dessert: Seradura and tres Leches cake. The Seradura was the best one. It is a whipped heavy cream with Maria cookies that are layered with each other and also crumbled on top. Next time we return we would like to try their shrimp because I heard it's good. read more

I love Paulo's! The mister and I were craving some Portuguese BBQ and I had passed Paulo's probably hundreds of times. After viewing the Yelp star rating I went to the restaurant to order - I wish they had a website or menu online so I could just call it in, but couldn't find one. Anyway, I get there and as soon as you walk in you're hit in the face with some of the most mouth watering smells imaginable. Go up to the counter and a woman, who I will assume is the owner, was waiting to take my order. OMG she was so incredibly sweet and friendly and somehow in the time while I was examining the menu, she gave me a cup of a chicken soup. It was so delicious. Place my order and after about 20 minutes I'm on my way home. Portion sizes are big - a half size could easily feed 2 people. And it tasted as good as it smelled. We're big fans now! read more

I know I said I was gonna rhyme all my reviews, but ain't nobody got time for that...so boo hoo. The food was really good...I got a sandwich and fries for like $8. Both were a decent sized portion. I just didn't like how long it took for someone to ask me if I needed help. The service was nice though. I do think you get treated better if you're a regular...not that I got treated (real) bad though. Anyway, the menu has got a ton of stuff on it and I can't think of many places to really eat in the area that aren't 7-Eleven and Walgreens. They deliver and have a ton of tables and a television. There is also music playing. read more

Came here to have lunch with the family. When you walk in the smells that fills the room is amazing. Our table ordered the Portuguese sausage as an appetizer, BBQ Portuguese Steak with eggs and BBQ pork chops. We liked 2 out of the 3 dishes. The Portuguese sausage had a good flavor, i liked the crunchy outside and soft and tender sausage. It was cooked how i normally like it. The pork chops were a little dry but tasty. You can really taste the smoky flavor. The one that i didn't enjoy was the BBQ Portuguese Steak with 2 eggs. The steak was not cooked properly and made the dish taste really bad. The worst part was it was the most expensive dish we ordered at $24.00. Our table also ordered dessert and I also liked the Seradura. I ddint care much for the tres leches. I would go back to try something else but I will never order the BBQ Portuguese Steak again. read more

Very good when you're not in the mood to make your own ribs or shrimp. I love the yellow rice and the fries are always good. You have to eat them as soon as they get home they don't taste good reheated unfortunately nice size portions as well. Go for it. I like the ribs and the chicken read more

Pretty good Portuguese BBQ food. I personally always order chicken from BBQ joints but I was a little disappointed from the chicken here compared to other spots. The ribs, however, were really delicious! The rice was very tasty and their dessert was FANTASTIC! I would go back just for the dessert. read more

Ordered takeout here during a thunderstorm (kitchen was swamped with delivery orders). A half BBQ beef ribs platter and chopped BBQ pork sandwich took about 20 minutes, which the guy at the counter accurately predicted. Restaurant is VERY casual and very loud inside. There were three televisions showing two different programs and the radio was on playing pretty loudly. You can hold a conversion over the volume easily enough but it was certainly distracting. When I got home I realized that we were given the wrong sides; I ordered rice and broccoli and got rice and beans instead. Beef ribs were of the sliced short rib variety and was very tough despite asking for it to be cooked to medium. Everything was tasty enough but the next time I crave Portuguese BBQ, I'll likely be willing to travel a little bit further to a place in Clark to get my fix. I do have to note that the staff was very friendly. I was offered a free drink since the kitchen was backed up and the guy taking my order was sincerely apologetic. read more

Colonia barbecue has impeccable food they really hit all the right spots for when you're craving Portuguese barbecue. Their garlic chicken, rice, fries are always on point. There has never been a day where I have ordered from them and the food tasted stale or funny in anyway. All their food is made to order and that's what I like about this place because it is freshly made. The staff can be a little more friendlier but honestly when you are picking up food it doesn't matter much. This place seems like a pick up and delivery joint not more of a sit down and eat your meal kind of place. The prices do seem a little high compared to other ethnic restaurants in the area but I guess you get what you pay for. read more

We ordered takeout and the food was delicious! We got the BBQ chicken and pork ribs combo and a side of the garlic shrimp. The ribs and the chicken were very flavorful, and the garlic shrimp were amazing! The portion sizes were huge and one combo meal and the side of shrimp was more than enough for two adults. The staff was very friendly as well. Definitely check this place out--Great food, great prices, and huge portion sizes. read more

My first time dining here. Usually, go to another nearby Portuguese bbq but this one did not disappoint. The beef cubes were very flavorful and the rice and beans buttery and delicious. My wife's bbq'd chicken was very good but a little dry. Otherwise, a great place. The only negative is the service. A little slow and the server kept forgetting things, like my drink order and later the beans. There was a large party there at the same time so they get a pass. read more

Finally...someplace to get some good food around my neck of the woods. We decided to give Paulo's a try after reading all the good reviews and I'm glad we did. I ordered the pork ribs and they were so juicy. I usually end up getting dry tough ribs when I get churrasco but not the case here. Priscila got the garlic shrimp dinner and said it was very good. Her first reaction was to how generous the portion of shrimp was as she gets short changed many times at other restaurants. We used to get our churrasco at Clark BBQ but their ribs went really downhill . The lady who waited on us at Paulo's who I'm assuming is the owners wife is from Minas Brasil and is very friendly. I'm really glad to have tried this restaurant out. Thank you to all of the people who reviewed this restaurant before me! =^) read more

We are used to the excellent Portuguese food from the Ironbound district in Newark and were leery when we decided to try out Paulo's. Boy were we surprised! We ordered a nice sampling so that we all could try a little of everything. The skirt steak was cooked perfectly- so nice and juicy! The garlic shrimp was delicious- just as good as the Newark restaurants. The chicken and pork was flavorful. Each meal came with rice and french fries. We ordered an extra side of red beans to go over the rice and boy was that so worth it! As I stir from my food coma thanks to Paulo's, it is clear that my family will be back again! read more

Paulo's food is absolutely delicious and definitely good value for what you pay. Their entrees typically come with fries and yellow rice. My favorite dish of theirs is the lemon chicken. Every time I'm in the area, I have to get some. Also, we typically order a few trays to serve at parties. Highly Recommended. I only wish that they were closer to where I lived! read more

My family's been a regular at Luso BBQ which was formerly at this location. We enjoyed ordering Luso's food and wasn't exactly sure what to expect from Paulo's. Normally we bought a tray of rice, full chicken, and fries from Luso. Paulo's too has this and in my opinion it's even better than Luso's. It's not too salty which is great and everything was really good. It's also a lot of food for a decent price. We'll definitely be ordering from Paulo's as often or more often. It's worth a try if you're in the area. As for the price range I said it was inexpensive, with it being under 10 bucks per person. That rings true for if you buy standard full trays of food or just sandwiches/burgers. Just be aware that the fish is a little more expensive. read more
