Ate there last week with a group of six and we all shared apps and entrees. This was a great meal. First, the aroma of the bbq fills the air when you come in. They seem to be doing a lot of take out, but there is a dining room with 6 or 7 tables. We were greated and served by Alexandria, who was friendly and attentive. She made some recommendations that did not disappoint. The sauteed chicken with garlic sauce had tons of flavor. We tried all the empanadas : chicken, beef, and spinach-cheese and they were excellent. Super-flaky and big and tasted great. We also got the beef short ribs and they were tender the way i needed. The bbq chicken and pork rib combo is another great dish. The Pork cubes dish has plenty of chorizo with loin chunks and sauteed veggies. Everything came with a brocolli, cauliflower and carrot medly that was cooked perfectly. I hate overcooked veg, and these were just right. The rice side dish was large and fluffy and I kept going back for more of the black beans side. This place is worth a return, the standouts being the garlic chicken and crispy empanadas. read more

We typically order for pickup. The last few times we ordered delivery they always forget the salad. This time, they forgot the salad and the food was ice cold like it was sitting there for over 30 mins before they delivered it. Took an hour to get it, and we're not far. Also before dinner time so they shouldn't have been that busy. We also paid for 2 hot sauces and only got one. Just annoying. read more

Honestly have been going here forever and their rice and lemon chicken do not disappoint. I have not sat down here in a while but when I did it was overall a good experience. My sister is new to the area and on move-in day we were all hungry and the aminous question of where to eat needed to be answered by Yelp. It didn't help that my parents are picky eaters and basically only eat Spanish food, so thank goodness for Colonia BBQ! As soon as we walked in the smokey smell of braised ribs tickled my nostrils and I knew this was the right choice. The two ladies behind the counter were very friendly and helped to answer questions about portions for the platters we were ordering. We ended up getting two chicken and ribs combination platters with a variation of fries, rice, beans and veggies as sides. The platters were done very quickly and as we took them off the counter to go home, they were already proving to be a good investment on their sheer weight! When we got home we were pleasantly surprised how great everything looked and dug right in! My picky parents did not stand a chance as they were wooed by all the bbq meats and crispy fries. I went here for lunch, this place is solid. Great food and service. I had the Garlic Shrimp dinner for one and a serradura. Both were excellent. My only complaint is the nail salon next door. I could smell it, which didn't at all put me off my food, but was a bit fumey. Luckly the have some outdoor seats which solved the problem. If you go here, get a dessert. We had the Portuguese sausage with pickled veggies, pork chop served with yellow rice and fries, and beef steak with 2 eggs over easy, served with black beans and rice. I liked the flavor of the chops and sausage, but I also thought they were a tad overdone. Perhaps they shouldn't cook them as long. We also ordered dessert: Seradura and tres Leches cake. The Seradura was the best one. It is a whipped heavy cream with Maria cookies that are layered with each other and also crumbled on top. I love Paulo's! The mister and I were craving some Portuguese BBQ and I had passed Paulo's probably hundreds of times. After viewing the Yelp star rating I went to the restaurant to order - I wish they had a website or menu online so I could just call it in, but couldn't find one. Anyway, I get there and as soon as you walk in you're hit in the face with some of the most mouth watering smells imaginable. Go up to the counter and a woman, who I will assume is the owner, was waiting to take my order. OMG she was so incredibly sweet and friendly and somehow in the time while I was examining the menu, she gave me a cup of a chicken soup. It was so delicious. Place my order and after about 20 minutes I'm on my way home. Portion sizes are big - a half size could easily feed 2 people. And it tasted as good as it smelled. We're big fans now! read more

I know I said I was gonna rhyme all my reviews, but ain't nobody got time for that...so boo hoo. The food was really good...I got a sandwich and fries for like $8. Both were a decent sized portion. I just didn't like how long it took for someone to ask me if I needed help. The service was nice though. I do think you get treated better if you're a regular...not that I got treated (real) bad though. Anyway, the menu has got a ton of stuff on it and I can't think of many places to really eat in the area that aren't 7-Eleven and Walgreens. They deliver and have a ton of tables and a television. Our table ordered the Portuguese sausage as an appetizer, BBQ Portuguese Steak with eggs and BBQ pork chops. We liked 2 out of the 3 dishes. The Portuguese sausage had a good flavor, i liked the crunchy outside and soft and tender sausage. It was cooked how i normally like it. The pork chops were a little dry but tasty. You can really taste the smoky flavor. The one that i didn't enjoy was the BBQ Portuguese Steak with 2 eggs. The steak was not cooked properly and made the dish taste really bad. The worst part was it was the most expensive dish we ordered at $24.00. Our table also ordered dessert and I also liked the Seradura. I ddint care much for the tres leches. Pretty good Portuguese BBQ food. I personally always order chicken from BBQ joints but I was a little disappointed from the chicken here compared to other spots. The ribs, however, were really delicious! The rice was very tasty and their dessert was FANTASTIC! I would go back just for the dessert. read more

Ordered takeout here during a thunderstorm (kitchen was swamped with delivery orders). A half BBQ beef ribs platter and chopped BBQ pork sandwich took about 20 minutes, which the guy at the counter accurately predicted. Restaurant is VERY casual and very loud inside. There were three televisions showing two different programs and the radio was on playing pretty loudly. You can hold a conversion over the volume easily enough but it was certainly distracting. When I got home I realized that we were given the wrong sides; I ordered rice and broccoli and got rice and beans instead. Beef ribs were of the sliced short rib variety and was very tough despite asking for it to be cooked to medium. Everything was tasty enough but the next time I crave Portuguese BBQ, I'll likely be willing to travel a little bit further to a place in Clark to get my fix. I do have to note that the staff was very friendly. I was offered a free drink since the kitchen was backed up and the guy taking my order was sincerely apologetic. read more

There has never been a day where I have ordered from them and the food tasted stale or funny in anyway. My first time dining here. Usually, go to another nearby Portuguese bbq but this one did not disappoint. The beef cubes were very flavorful and the rice and beans buttery and delicious. My wife's bbq'd chicken was very good but a little dry. Otherwise, a great place. The only negative is the service. Finally...someplace to get some good food around my neck of the woods. We decided to give Paulo's a try after reading all the good reviews and I'm glad we did. I ordered the pork ribs and they were so juicy. I usually end up getting dry tough ribs when I get churrasco but not the case here. Priscila got the garlic shrimp dinner and said it was very good. Her first reaction was to how generous the portion of shrimp was as she gets short changed many times at other restaurants. We used to get our churrasco at Clark BBQ but their ribs went really downhill . The lady who waited on us at Paulo's who I'm assuming is the owners wife is from Minas Brasil and is very friendly. Finally got to Colonia BBQ and realized it was a blessing that they were closed the previous time. Their BBQ Chicken was so dry and bland. We are used to the excellent Portuguese food from the Ironbound district in Newark and were leery when we decided to try out Paulo's. Boy were we surprised! We ordered a nice sampling so that we all could try a little of everything. The skirt steak was cooked perfectly- so nice and juicy! The garlic shrimp was delicious- just as good as the Newark restaurants. The chicken and pork was flavorful. Each meal came with rice and french fries. Paulo's food is absolutely delicious and definitely good value for what you pay. Their entrees typically come with fries and yellow rice. My favorite dish of theirs is the lemon chicken. My family's been a regular at Luso BBQ which was formerly at this location. We enjoyed ordering Luso's food and wasn't exactly sure what to expect from Paulo's. Normally we bought a tray of rice, full chicken, and fries from Luso. Paulo's too has this and in my opinion it's even better than Luso's. It's not too salty which is great and everything was really good. It's also a lot of food for a decent price. We'll definitely be ordering from Paulo's as often or more often. It's worth a try if you're in the area. As for the price range I said it was inexpensive, with it being under 10 bucks per person. That rings true for if you buy standard full trays of food or just sandwiches/burgers. Just be aware that the fish is a little more expensive. read more
