Underwhelming food. Bad service. Great wine list. Nice decor.
Came here after a mani/pedi date a week ago. The place was pretty empty on a Thursday night, although it did fill up around 9/10pm. It's an eclectic crowd that comes in, but it seems businessmen like to frequent Toscano. Oddly enough, two different tables next to us had one patron each, looking like they were tourists with big hiking backpacks.
It's dark inside, antique wood tables, giving off an old world feel. For a place touted as "fine dining" I very much dislike seeing salt and pepper on the table, but that's more a personal prejudice. Same with offering grated parmesan for EVERY DISH. I love cheese - prob more than the average person, but that doesn't mean parmesan pairs with everything. Whenever I go to Italy, chefs feel it is a slap in the face when Americans ask for grated parmesan. Food is an art and chefs are maestros. We shouldn't mar the masterpiece by adding tons of salt/pepper and parmesan. (Disclaimer: Everyone has different taste preferences. Some like super salty foods; others prefer bland. However, I believe fine dining establishments shouldn't have salt/pepper on the table and come around with a bowl of grated parmesan. Toscano, then, should be labeled "rustic" fare).
Rant aside, the service was atrocious. The GM/host at the front was great, but our server was patronizing. I'm not sure if it was due to the emptiness of the restaurant, but he wouldn't put in our appetizers separate from our entrees (WTF! For souffles or prixe fixe I completely understand, but a regular app order shouldn't be such an ordeal). He specifically asked us to figure out what we wanted for the rest of our meal before he could put our order in. Luckily, this didn't alter the timing of our food.
As previously mentioned, our server was a bit of a jerk. I sat down and noticed my fork was dirty. When I kindly informed our server that it had something stuck to it, he didn't believe me and asked me to show him where it was dirty! I'm sorry, but if a patron tells you their silverware is dirty - even if it is just a water spot - you replace it, no questions asked. He had the gall to ask me to show him where it was dirty, and then when he saw the dried food stuck to the utensil he promptly pocketed it.
When my date asked for a wine recommendation, he recommended a wine by price point and couldn't describe any of the notes or what it would pair well with. Amateur server with an attitude. We should have left then... Red flags everywhere. I needed a drink ASAP. I went with a blueberry martini - it was OK, not great, but it had tons of blueberries floating in it. Healthy, right? ;) The wines we got were great. They have an extensive wine list with some really good wines that I'd love to try again, provided we don't have the same server again.
Appetizers were great. We ordered the caprese to share - really fantastic. I'm a tomato aficionado and those tomatoes were juicy and delicious. A nice touch was that they split the caprese onto two individual plates when they brought them over. Bread and olive oil were quite tasty as well, but the bread came after our appetizer? Timing was a bit odd.
Our entrees were just OK. Pasta my date ordered was pretty good. We also ordered 2 risotto dishes - the funghi one was great; the tomato, asparagus, and onion one was fine but nothing to rave about.
Food and decor are nice, wines were great, cocktails were meh, but our server ruined the dining experience. As long as your server was not the one we got, you'll enjoy the food. It's a quaint restaurant on Charles St. worth checking out for some rustic fare. If you want more of a fine dining Italian experience, head over to Scampo a few blocks away. read more
