My wife and I have been big fans of Stars in Hingham for five years. We had always discussed the idea of having dinner at Tosca's, since we had heard and read so much about it. My wife made reservations for Tosca's for Valentine's Day.
We arrived slightly before our 7:30 reservations, at which time my wife informed the host of our arrival. She was asked if we "had called ahead?", at which time she told them of our reservation, which they had called and confirmed with us several days earlier. The host then replied that our "table was being cleared, and would be ready in a few minutes".
A little disclaimer here - my wife and I are in our mid-forties, were well-dressed, and know how to carry ourselves and behave in restaurants. We aren't jet-setters, but we have eaten in some of the finest restaurants you'll encounter in the US and abroad.
We waited for about 20 minutes, and were given notice that our table was ready. During those twenty minutes we observed a number of people coming in without reservations and chatting up the host. A young hostess started to lead us to our table in what could be best described as a secondary dining room, when she abruptly stopped and asked us to wait and left. I looked around and spotted at least two cleared tables for two. She returned and asked us to follow her and she redirected us down a long hallway and around a corner to a set of glass doors.
We entered through the glass doors and I was somewhat shocked to see that we had been lead to what could best be described as a small function room. Within the room were approximately 15 tables, (rented card tables - to be exact) with tablecloths, that were appointed with two chairs each. At first glance you could clearly see that the fabric on these chairs was badly stained.
My wife's first instinct was to ask to sit in the main room - but shame on me - I mentioned that it was Valentine's Day and we were probably lucky to get a table. They put us at a table right next to the bar in the front of the room.
We sat down and waited probably 15 minutes for one of the two wait staff assigned to the room to ask us if we wanted drinks. She took our order, promptly made the drinks, and left them on the bar for another 10 minutes. When she finally came back and left the drinks, she asked if we wanted water. We ordered bottled water, and it was at that moment that I realized that there was a large glob of food matter on my wife's water glass. It appeared to be water-soaked bread, and was approximately the size of a nickel. I pointed this out to the server, and she grabbed the glass and hid it behind her back. She came back with the water (and a new glass) and stated that she would send some bread. She took our order and was off.
The bus person brought by a small plate of bread - no oil, no butter. We waited another ten minutes or so, and our server came by while we were in conversation and without excusing herself, leaned into my wife's ear and asked what she had ordered for a main course. I took advantage of the fact that she was around to ask for butter or dipping oil, and she brought back both when she brought our appetizers.
We then had to ask her for the wine list, as it was never offered to us. We did order a bottle of wine when given a chance.,
Meanwhile, the table behind us returned a dish to the kitchen. An official (later determined to be the general manager) came out to practice some damage control. There was a steady stream of new customers being brought into the room - all couples - and all very young or older. There were no "beautiful people" being asked to dine in that room!
I had ordered the tomatoes and goat cheese with balsamic vinegar, and my wife had ordered the apple salad. The cheese was not fresh or local, and I knew this because it had obviously just been cut from a block of cheese.
Did I mention the music? There was a compact disc playing soft jazz with some Sinatra mixed in. How did I know that it was a compact disc? It kept getting hung up and was skipping.
How about the comfort of the dining room? The two glass doors through which we had entered were right next to the rear door. An older gentlemen in conversation with others stood for at least ten minutes holding the doors open, allowing the cold night air to pour in. None of the restaurant's staff said anything to him.
I cannot document the full disappointment of our experience at Tosca's, due to the 5k limit on characters in this field. Just know that the main courses were cafeteria-grade, the creme brulee that I ordered was ultimately "not available" because the torch was broken, and the unsolicited empty apologies of the restaurant official fell on deaf ears.
All this for $170.00? My wife and I were so disappointed. We would have been so better off had we gone to Bridgemans in Hull. We have NEVER had a bad meal or occasion there. read more
