Three of us had fish tacos which we all agreed were great - crisply fried with cabbage slaw and so much fish you needed a fork to eat. The other diner had large plate of sushi which was enjoyed. Downtown hingham is a great area for an evening walk to see the harbor and then get some dinner. When we do we always do to Square cafe. In warmer weather there's a nice selection of outdoor dining but year round the bar and dining room offer an elevated feel. I recommend the bread along with dumplings as they are my two favorites while my wife found her most recent scallops dish to be excellent. The restaurant has a classic vibe and is located in downtown Hingham with street parking. Reservations are done by the phone and are recommended. The service is great with the staff checking on our table frequently and small details such as replacing our silverware after appetizers before the main dishes. Ordered the sourdough bread with a unique chive oil dip, the bread is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The poached pear salad was very full with a great vinaigrette and candied walnuts. I am really happy about the salmon. The ginger aioli with the hot honey gives a sweet and strong flavor of the salmon. Overall a great restaurant with amazing service. read more

PERFECTION. From start to finish, my husband and I had the best anniversary dinner here. The place is small and has a lovely cozy intimate atmosphere, perfect for date night. We started with the tuna two ways and the roasted autumn squash bisque. The tuna was excellent; great portion size and flavor, served with a large crisp flatbread chip that we could break away pieces from. AND THAT BISQUE!! I couldn't stop talking about it for days! Probably one of the best flavors of any food I have tasted in a long, long time. For my entree, I ordered the grilled sirloin, medium-rare. It was a PERFECT classic steak! Cooked accurately to temp, not over or under seasoned; juicy, flavorful and just the right size (12oz). There's nothing that could have made this sirloin any better! For dessert, we shared the bread pudding and OMG!! I had no idea bread pudding could taste this good! I was stuffed from dinner and still couldn't stop eating it. It was magic on a plate. I can't remember the last time I was this impressed with a restaurant (and we go out to eat a LOT). Every bite of food I had here was exceptional. Highly recommended is an understatement. We had an amazing dinner at The Square Cafe in Hingham! we called to make a reservation but we had no answer so we took a chance knowing it was a rainy Monday withought a reservation. I was recommended the dumplings, I've never had better dumplings in my life! and the cod I had was spot on! Incredible! I swappet the side for a potato cake, and it was the best choice crispy and perfect with the fish. Dominik, our waiter, was great, super friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed while providing us with incredible wine recommendations, He also kept the kids entertained which made my night a whole lot easier. Everything about Square Cafe is perfect - the tables, the wait staff, the food ... no cocktails this time, but I'll be back. For lunch, a friend and I split the mussels as well as the shrimp scampi over spaghetti squash. Both items are gluten-free and so delicious! Square Cafe is consistently buzzing. Cozy atmosphere that can feel a bit cramped during peak hours -- but it adds to the ambiance. My go-to's are the tuna tacos, bolognese and scallops. All cooked well and served with a friendly smile. Decent but standard fare cocktails. Wine list is limited -- wish they expanded that. I hadn't been to Square Cafe in Hingham in many years, but recall the wonderful lunch I had there with my husband. Wanted to take a special friend out for her 90th birthday to the new Square Cafe nearby in Hanover, but they're not open for lunch on Mondays. So we went to Hingham and had a perfectly delicious lunch, from the bread service, her grilled peach salad, my Thai Shrimp Salad, and a shared bread pudding for dessert. My shrimp were succulent and huge, cooked perfectly and still slightly warm, over a never-ending bowl of peanut-chili dressed salad full of texture. My friend loved her peach salad, topped with a generous portion of burrata . We both had iced tea were disappointed that refills were not offered. Service was adequate but not overly attentive. Our server knew we were splitting the dessert and could have offered to replate it for us instead of leaving us to divide it with a spoon. Nevertheless, it was scrumptious. Eager to try the lunch menu at Hanover next time. Regarding birthday - this was a very special birthday which I informed about when making the reservation. The fact that Square hasn't sacrificed an iota of attention to quality, preparation and finesse now that we're in a take-out only timeframe speaks volumes. Recently got the Square Burger and the seared tuna entree, along with crispy brussels sprouts, and all were packaged with supreme care, and lent themselves to be perfectly plated. Seriously, I felt like a sous - they made it easy! I really enjoyed my experience here! I had the raspberry orange lime Rickey martini, scallops and coconut cream pie. The martini was a little sweet for my liking but still yummy. The scallops were delicious- four nice sized scallops on a bed of roasted corn and tomato risotto. Yum! I loved the contrast in sweet, salty, savory flavors and the basil pesto oil was an unexpected nice touch. I almost didn't get dessert but I saw another table order and new I needed to try something and boy was I happy I did. The coconut cream pie was to die for. The pastry shell was a bit hard and difficult to cut but the coconut cream flavor and homemade whipped cream was insane. The interior of this restaurant was really cute. It felt high end and casual at the same time with English countryside vibes. There was also outdoor seating available. Last but not least the staff were incredible- I was dining alone and they were super friendly, went out of their way to check on me, get my food quickly, and they were so friendly and attentive with all the other guests nearby. Growing up in Hingham we have been coming here for years. I have always LOVED the ambiance and coziness of Square Cafe. Also the food does not disappoint, However with a heavy heart I believe I may have had my last Dinner here. My best friend and I stopped in for a mini girls night out. We were both dressed down in jeans and had just needed a night out after the Holiday weekend for ourselves. We chose to stop in to Square Cafe when we could have gone anywhere else! We walked in and were informed by the host that the kitchen was closing soon. We sat down at the bar and noticed that the Bartender, Darryl, who was the only bartender, completely ignored us for the first 10 minutes we were there. He was completely preoccupied by a gentleman who was WAY over-served! Darryl didn't even look at us as we sat down, he didn't give us menu's, he didn't offer us a drink! He just kept talking to the people at the end of the bar. It was nice being out at a restaurant and so we didn't mind at first, we were just catching up and talking but, After 10 MINUTES of sitting there, we realized the time, I asked Darryl for a menu as we didn't want the kitchen to close! He hands us ONE menu for the two of us to share and still doesn't even greet us! He didn't even look at us when he handed us the menu! He just continued to talk to the people at the end of the bar who appear to be getting ready to leave. Darryl then walks by us and walks the over-served man outside. It was a very cold night and every time that door opens it lets in a blast of freezer temp air! We are still sitting there without even a glass of water or bread (And I love their bread! Finally after coming in and out FOUR Times, Darryl explains that the man was over-served and he didn't want him to drive. So Okay that's fine it happens! I said don't worry about it. At this point I FULLY expect Darryl to apologize but he doesn't! He pours us two glasses of water and then the drunk guy comes back in and Darryl starts helping him look for his car keys for another 5 minutes. In and out they go again each time the door opens we shiver. It was a miserable experience! Finally with only a few minutes left before the kitchen closes Darryl takes our orders. She ordered the Tuna and his response was you mean the entree (Yes that is what we meant, as if he was annoyed that we were going to eat a full meal) I ordered the Salmon and asked to try the Duckhorn Cab. Darryl pours me a small glass of the Duckhorn which I couldn't pick up and taste because he had poured the glass so sloppy that there was wine all over the bottom of the glass. We never got that bread I love so much : ( I then asked if I could put in an order to go it was 9:01 at this point and he said if it's after 9 the kitchen won't do it as if it were OUR fault that he ignored us for the first 15 minutes we were there! He could have tried for us, It was clear he didn't want us there. We each had one drink and our meals. Darryl basically ignored us the entire meal. He didn't ask us if we wanted another drink, He didn't ask us how our meals were! After we were finished with our meals we were deciding if we should order another drink or not. We asked Darryl for the wine list and his response was that he was really tired and then followed by "Are you going to stay here until midnight chatting" As if we often came into Square Cafe and stayed until midnight talking with him? I said you know what we are just going to go. He handed us the bill. I fully expected at this point for an apology and or for him to say that he bought us our first round but he didn't even apologize! I was shocked, She was shocked! We left there and vented about Darryl both deciding that he was the worst bartender we had ever encountered and how his energy and social skills would make him a great mortician. I am writing this review because I genuinely love Square Cafe and the staff but I will not recommend dining at this restaurant while Darryl is working. read more

I recently went to this bistro with my brother for dinner. As an appetizer, we ordered the yellowfin tuna two ways: tuna tartar and seared tuna. The tuna tartar came with sesame spinach and some ponzu sauce, and the seared tuna came with seaweed salad and mango. I thought the tuna tartar was too oily and the seared tuna was average. For my main course, I ordered the roasted stuffed heritage pork chop. I usually don't order pork chops in an American restaurant but I liked the sound of the dish. I am glad that I did. The pork chop was moist and stuffed with spinach, cranberries and cheddar. The pork chop also was glazed with a cider pan jus. As a side, there was sweet potato gratin. It was absolutely delicious! The pork chop definitely saved the day. I guess I am a fan now! read more
