The waiter got my wife's fish order wrong. Then when it was replaced the scallops were raw. He then said how lucky she was that she got both the crab cake and scallops. Fortunately the manager recognized the screwup and comped the meal. Then the waiter delivered the desert and coffee explaining that the milk for tea was " cream/milk". What?!! At that point I knew we were never coming back again. Lastly, I had scallops and risotto that were drowned in this sicky sweet sauce. It was awful. Definitely not worth the time or money. read more

The food was great, service perfect. The hostess was unfriendly and unkind. A person in our party has mobility issues and we always sit at the end table on the patio. She was beyond furious that the said person had already sat at the table. He literally can not walk around tables. She was planning on seating us at the worst outside table. I recently went to this bistro with my brother for dinner. As an appetizer, we ordered the yellowfin tuna two ways: tuna tartar and seared tuna. The tuna tartar came with sesame spinach and some ponzu sauce, and the seared tuna came with seaweed salad and mango. I thought the tuna tartar was too oily and the seared tuna was average. For my main course, I ordered the roasted stuffed heritage pork chop. I usually don't order pork chops in an American restaurant but I liked the sound of the dish. I am glad that I did. The pork chop was moist and stuffed with spinach, cranberries and cheddar. The pork chop also was glazed with a cider pan jus. As a side, there was sweet potato gratin. It was absolutely delicious! The pork chop definitely saved the day. I guess I am a fan now! read more

Nice little place! This is a bistro-ish spot in a cute area of Hingham, literally across the street from the original Talbots. The patio is gorgeous and immaculate, with cheerful flowerpots. We had a crab cake, hamburger, and salmon burger. Enjoyed all. Several good beer choices. Service was friendly and efficient. The restaurant ambiance was relaxing and beautifully decorated. Drinks we're so delicious. The appetizers were crispy shrimp and Brussel sprouts. Square Cafe is my favorite restaurant on the South Shore. I've been many times, and every meal has been excellent. Even when they are very busy, which is pretty much every time I've been there, our meal comes out within 15 minutes. I love the decor; the restaurant is very cozy. They also have outdoor patio seating. Service is always excellent and they have the best espresso martinis. I highly recommend the cafe bolognese, the pork Milanese, and the roasted cod. I look forward to trying new menu items at future visits. I highly suggest making reservations. read more

Steak was overcooked. Served with flavorless sides. They also put a balsamic glaze on it that wasn't in the description. My wife got a scallop dish that was so salty she couldn't eat it. Why this place is popular is beyond me. I'll NEVER go back and NEVER recommend it. MA food is awful. I know that I could cook everything on the menu better than whatever clown "chef" was in the kitchen. The only reason I went was because my wife found an old gift certificate she forgot to give to someone. So unfortunately the money was going to be wasted if I didn't go. Had a great meal tonight. Nice place eat indoor or out. We sat inside nice sofa tables. We got the brussel sprout app. Simply amazing. Had kinda a sweat & sour sauce on it. Next O got the 14 0z. Ribeye. GF got scallops with risotto. Already full we dated to order dessert! Giant carrot cake & key lime pie. Barely got it in. So good. New favorite! Square Cafe in Hanover needs serious help. At least at lunch time. Four of us went at one thirty, and were taken right away That's where the good ended. The meals were sub par, but expensive. Burger was over cooked, tuna was "well done" ( never seen seared tuna well done), the ravioli sauce was pasty and the spaghetti squash was almost raw. There seems to be no allergy protocol here. At most restaurants when you alert your server of an allergy they will then inform the manager and the chef and then they will fire the item. I told my server I had a nut allergy before my apps and before my meal, and my meal still came out with peanuts. So I'm assuming none of these safety protocols happened once. To "fix" the problem the server took my meal away to be remade, and my friend had to eat cold food when mine came out again. And we were there for her birthday. And it was only a Wednesday night lol. We visited the Hanover location tonight and from start to finish - 5 stars. Service was so friendly, cocktails were delicious. For appetizers, we had the coconut shrimp and simple greens salad - both were great. Loved the pineapple salsa and pickled veg with the coconut shrimp and the salad was huge and definitely shareable. For dinner we had the halibut and the Chicken Pesto Garganelli - both so flavorful. Good size portions - we took some doggie bags to go. We even went on to share the coconut cream pie which was perfect as well. So glad to have this addition in Hanover. We will be back! read more

I am a New Yorker who had to travel to Massachusetts during the Covid-19 pandemic due to unfortunate circumstances. We brought in from Square and instantly the dining room table turned into a gourmet restaurant. Everything was perfect, even the meat was cooked exactly how we ordered it. (That rarely happens with takeout). Thank you Square, for providing this experience for us! Very important mention- I wish I new the lady's name who brought the food out to our car, in the pouring rain! She was so nice, and in the pouring rain she was sure to check that we had enough bread, and she went back inside and brought us out more! May this restaurant continue to prosper! I ordered the shrimp scampi with zucchini noodles. It was served with fresh spinach and tomatoes and seasoned perfectly with just the right amount of garlic. The amount of shrimp in this dish was impressive and honestly one of the best seafood dishes I have ever had. I highly recommend the Brussel sprouts and ruby red martini. It is tasteless. We split a salad. It was fine, but the bill appeared with a $3 charge for splitting the salad: give me a break. I am dropping $300+ for dinner for four and you are charging me to split the salad? Who thinks that is a good idea. You got me for $300+ once, but never again. Skip this place. Solid dinner spot. The food is really good although I would advise them to make the portions a little smaller - they are obnoxiously huge, even the appetizers. It's also on the pricey side, which reducing portions could help with, too. One star off here. We had the crispy shrimp appetizer (4/5), the Brussels sprouts (5/5) and we split the halibut (5/5) -- the two halves they served us were basically full entree sizes in my book -- and then had the bread pudding (3/5). Service was great. Place can be a little noisy inside so if you're looking for a quiet dinner this isn't it. read more

First, and last, time here. I took the family out on a random Tuesday night to give it a shot. It wasn't crazy busy but the waitress was short and even rude at times. We got the PEI mussels were disgusting. I mentioned it to the waitress and the super sweet lady that helped clear our table but nothing was done about it. We ate maybe 8 out of 30 for our table of 5. Also, we were charged for a crab cake we didn't order. The prices were outrageous and the waitress was rude. Again, the lady that cleared our plates was nice. read more

Had a great dinner at Square, it was my first visit. Calamari was delicious, sweet and savory. Main dishes were both winners, the cod and chicken. Chicken wasn't especially amazing but hit the spot and the sides were great. Cod was a little heavy on the butter but a perfect piece of fish. Service was excellent, not rushed and a nice place for courses. Desserts were amazing and fun. It was more expensive than expected ($200 w/tip for 2, and didn't even get a bottle of wine or a steak), but we had 3 courses and a few drinks). Overall worth it. read more

If you're not into the al fresco thing, their interior is the most elegant around, perfect for date night, a business discussion or a getaway from the kids. This restaurant used to be great, but it isn't anymore. If someone recommended this place to you, they probably know it when it was good. Last night was my third time going to Square Cafe for dinner, and will probably be my last. The brussel sprouts were far too oily. The noodle dish was sloppy. The oyster special and mussels were decent. Overall the food wasn't as good as it has been in the past. It's like something changed in the kitchen. Our server was pleasant and efficient, which is why this review even has two stars. Worst of all was the table. They sat us near the front door, and every time a guest came in freezing air blew all over me. The manager/host fella talked to me about it, and when I suggested they don't seat anyone there, he said, "well we are trying to maximize seats." Then he said, "you didn't have to accept this table." He simply didn't care that my dinner experience was unbearable due to the cold. I could hear him talking with other staff about where to sit "VIP" guests from my seat during dinner. They did not make my wife or me feel like VIPs. I guess you have to know someone to have a good meal at Square Cafe anymore. Bummer, as I used to like this place. read more

As the ferry transported me from Boston to Hingham I had but one thought: No Boston dinner for me. As a rule, meals in cities trump meals in suburbs and I was sorry to miss a city meal but understood. Were I to miss that ferry I'd be swimming back to Hingham. My friend, a Hingham resident, pulled up to The Square Cafe announcing that it's one of her favorite places. Not one of her favorite places in Hingham; one of her favorites regardless of geography. I immediately understood why. Square is upscale and charmingly outfitted but immediately comfortable. It puts one in the mood to burrow into a corner table with a glass of Cabernet, charmingly poured tableside from a single-serving decanter. The dim lighting adds to the ambiance; the experience envelops. The Crispy Hot & Sour Calamari ($12; with Ruby Red Grapefruit, Mango, Roasted Cashews, & Hot/Sour Dressing) was a no-brainer. My friend mentioned that it's her go-to starter at Square and as soon as I tasted it I made it mine as well. Excellent. Having satisfied my fat craving and well into satisfying my alcohol yen, my main dish (another appetizer) of Sautéed Wild Maine Mussels ($13; in spicy Lobster Broth with Thai Basil, Lime, & Coconut) was another candidate for a repeat visit. From the surroundings to the menu to the details (that small decanter for wine; the delivery of hot, damp towels post meal) I quickly realized that I'd not missed anything by skipping a dinner in the city of Boston.
