When I was in university, many of my peers had a thing for Comella's. I met up with a friend I see on average once a year, and we decided to go for old-time sake. I didn't understand the hype then, and I especially do not understand it now. My taste may have become more discerning in the last six years, possibly because I am no longer a broke college student. Then and now, Comella's was fine; it wasn't the flip-flops served by a place that rhymes with "Abdominos," but at the same time, it was absolutely nothing to write home about. My friend is less adventurous than I am, so we settled for mozzarella sticks and a cheese pizza. I was there primarily for the company, not the food. The mozzie sticks were OK. They had a decent crust/breading, and the cheese had some stringiness (that "grab on and pull"). They could have used more herbs/spices in the coating to liven them up. Similarly, I found the tomato sauce a bit bland. These feel like a middle-of-the-road store brand prepared in the air fryer. (Not saying that's what they do, just what they feel like). The pizza is similarly lackluster. The crust is nicely thin, with a fair amount of cheese and sauce that stays in balance with the crust. However, the tomato sauce was dull, and the cheese was plain mozzarella. While trying to avoid sounding like a broken record, some herbs or garlic powder would have been amazing. Also, considering how quiet it was, the service could've been more attentive. The calculus for a broke college student going with the flow and someone having graduated is different. While I definitely wouldn't have minded Comella's in my college days, now I don't feel the pull to return. While there was nothing glaringly wrong that would reduce their rating to two stars, there is nothing remotely special to have me choose them over the tens, if not hundreds, of similar places closer to me. read more

Came in for a late lunch/early dinner on a Saturday and there was only 2 other people in the place. There were however several people that came in to pick up pizzas through out our meal. Food: meatball sub was very fresh. Meatballs seasoned beautifully and the ciabatta roll was soft and perfect. The cheese was a bit lacking, I thought I was going to get actual cheese slices but it was shredded mozzarella. Very odd. The buffalo wings were large and great. Atmosphere: I really liked the idea behind this place. There's pictures all around of the family that started the place. The menu is also built around making you feel like you're part of the Italian family. Service: Lacking. The waiter asked us from across the room if we wanted more water. The appetizer came at the same time as our meal, actually we got our meals and he had gone back to grab the appetizer. He also did not come back to the table until we were completely done eating and he brought the check. In that time we wanted more blue cheese for the buffalo wings and both ran out of water. We used this location for food for a birthday party with the intent of offering our guests a selection of a few dishes that they could serve themselves from. We had a second party two days later and intended to do the same. That didn't happen. When I stopped in to order double trays of shells, chicken parm and lasagna, the person working the counter asked if I wanted ziti or just the dish. I said that didn't need the extra ziti. She said "good, it's a lot more expensive with the ziti!" After 5 minutes, she couldn't figure out how to ring in the order and then told me that I just had to take the ziti. Ok...no prob. When I opened up the dishes at the party, I was met with a $200 Sea of Ziti. There were 6 shells in one platter, no discernible lasagna in another and maybe some floating pieces of chicken in a third. All I could hear guests saying was things like "did you say you had lasagna?" Or "the ziti was fine but I was hoping to try the shells...are there any left?" Embarrassing. And costly. Needless to say, we went elsewhere for the next party and commend Victoria's for nailing a 20 pizza order on time and piping hot. I sent a comment through the website with the most sincere "maybe it was just an off day" tone but have never received a response. Advice....continue to go for quick, mid week meals. I used to like this restaurant a lot. I haven't been in a few years and went this past week- it was terrible. The chicken parm. was tough as shoe leather, the garloic bread was hard on one side and mush on the other, the cannoli shells were like crackers, the chicken and brocolli alfredo was absolutely greasy with gristly chicken that seemed like it was from a package from the freezer section. It was expensive AND it all had a terrible effect on my intestines that lasted for days. I debated calling the Board of Health but didn't really feel like talking about bathroom issues, iykwim. So we have been here a few times and every single visit has been the same. The stoned bar tender/ wanna be manager states they don't have any draft beer and the lines are being worked on and he can't remember if he took our order or not! The other guest literally make fun of how stoned he is ! not a good person to have on the front line. I started going to the West Newton location nearly 20 years ago..it was so good you were sure an Italian Nana made the food. Forward to now? The food has gotten progressively worse. I mean awful. I would have given 0 stars but the bartender was super nice and very friendly I'd go back just to have a few beers. First and foremost, this location is cutting corners - it's so sadly amateurish. I got the Veal Parm. My entree came out on a 6" salad plate. Totally serious. They piled on a few fusilli and a ton of sauce so the plate looked as if you were getting a lot of food. The veal parm was frozen and reheated. Tough, no flavor and the batter fell off immediately. Boo! No i'm not kidding. Does the management think they're fooling anyone? Such a ridiculous and sad insult to a once great restaurant legacy. Avoid the food at all costs and order a couple of beers. Truth be told, I used to come here awhile back and the food was very good. Not sure what is going on but I would not go back after this. Food: Horrible. We ordered the fried ravioli as a starter and it was bad. Hard, stale and flavorless. We ordered a children's meal, butternut ravioli and I ordered one of the messes. The butternut ravioli was sent back (fortunately they took it off the bill) and the mess was horrible. It was supposed to have meatballs (didn't), the sausage was salty to the point it was not edible and it was really bad. On the upside, the kids meal (spaghetti and meatball) came out ok. I ate about a 3rd of my meal (the mess) and (hindsight being 20/20) I should have sent my meal back also, but didn't. Later in the evening I literally got physically sick (I am certain its from the mess). We also ordered bread which is nothing more than one of their sub rolls. Service was ok. Waitress was new and seemed confused (shes new so its understandable). We ordered the children's spaghetti and meatball and were charged for the adult meal. Table beside us was also not charged correctly so perhaps management should offer more assistance to the new staff. If this ever gets read I do hope management addresses these issues within the restaurant. This was not just one bad meal, the overall experience (food, over charged for kids meal) was bad. read more

Not Salsa's but better than the Olive Garden. Our first time here since it changed over. It is a different setup and seems half the size, but does have a divider down the middle. It has a full bar and cute waitresses, so the 4 out of 5 stars is relative compared to alternatives up the road. But for what it is, it has its merits. It is better than I had expected but seems to be lacking systemic issues, with a lack of half of we ordered (e.g., "sorry we're out...") including iced tea and Heineken, but the food is decadent and the young women running the place (at least that's who was early on a Sunday evening) were pleasant and competent. We happened to enter the place on "dry run" opening night. Right away we were treated like family. Extremely nice people greeted us, offering us to be their very first customers before they even had food to serve. That of course made us come again the next day, this time to actually order some food. The homey feeling even grew with every bite. Real, home made, fresh and delicious food. We were hooked. We kept coming to Comella's almost every day since then and brought other members of our family with us, which are also hooked like us now. My wife is a true Italian foodie. Her standards in restaurants in general, and in Italian food in particular, are EXTREMELY high. And she just LOVES the place. Our absolute favorites are the Mozzarella Sticks and the Chicken Parmesan, which we just can't get enough of. The restaurant's General Manager Ben is another good reason to eat there. Always welcoming. Always with a friendly and smiling face. Always giving you the feeling you are home. A true professional. My husband and I are doing a joint review. The feel as you walk into Comella's in welcoming and authentic. You can see pictures of the family on the walls which adds to the homey feeling. It's like a glimpse into their history. The restaurant is impeccably clean. One side of the location is "self serve" the other has wait staff. Even on the self serve side you are given a number to display at your table and the food is brought to you which is delightful! Such a nice touch! Now on to the food. I am Italian and very particular. The sauce is fantastic, the fusilla pasta is homemade. The lasagna was cheesy and flavorful. The pizza tasted like my Moms. Not greasy or too spicy with the correct ratio of cheese and sauce. The chicken Parmesan is my favorite so far. The chicken is perfectly crisp and delicious! The meatballs are moist and flavorful. This is my work's go-to place for ordering us pizza delivery for staff lunches. Today was the first time I went into the restaurant to eat there. It was excruciatingly slow, and while the waitress wasn't rude, she also had zero personality and didn't seem too much like she wanted to be there. The worst part is that we were the only people in the place, it's not like they were busy. I got a sandwich, it was just ok. The beer list was no good. I'm fine never having to step foot in this place again. The pizza is just ok, but I'll keep eating that at my meetings because it's free for me. Like 3 blocks down the road, if that, is a pizza place called Crow Point and it is amazing. Everything there is good- pizza, subs, calzones, various dinner plates, salads. It is cheaper, way faster, and the staff is much friendlier. You won't regret going there instead of Comella's. read more

Not sure either way on this place, hence the 3 stars. Staff was polite enough to our large group, but it does seem to me that this place is suffering a bit with its identity. There's not really much "Italian" about this place beyond the Rat Pack pictures on the wall. Yeah, you can order Toasted Ravioli and Chicken Parm, but I can also order those from the Greek Pizza place down the street. The pizzas we ordered were pretty good, and the "Mess" dishes are kind of interesting, but all in all, the menu is very "pizza joint" rather than "Italian". The bar area has two 50+ inch TV's and a projector in an area where you are never more than 10 feet away from a screen. It's over-stimulating to say the least, and again - is this a sports bar or an Italian restaurant? There is no coffee served...at an Italian restaurant. Tried to order a dark beer (porter) because of the lack of coffee, and the bartender gave me a sample of their porter on tap, except it was a pale ale of some sort - bright yellow. When I asked, he and the guy who seemed to be the manager really sold me on it, assuring me it was some sort of wild take on a porter, but a simple search of the beer on the internet showed that they either had the wrong keg connected or they were given the wrong tap handle for the beer, because it was not the beer that I had in my hand. I showed them, and they were polite enough about it, but still... I didn't have a bad experience overall, I just don't think I would ever come back to this place if I was in the mood for Italian food. Better to grab a pizza with some friends and maybe sit at the bar for a game or something, but they're not blowing anyone away with their alcohol selection either. The sauce is on the sweeter side. Meatballs are moist and tender. I got the shrimp scampi with pesto sauce. It was disappointing. It felt like it came from an assembly line. They literally put spoiled spaghetti in the container, topped it with overcooked, tough shrimp and then spooned pesto on top of that. None of it was cooked together so the flavors don't blend together. I had to toss everything together, spiced it with salt and pepper, parmesan cheese, and lemon to taste like a scampi. read more

Interesting, unusual, & we probably won't be coming back. The restaurant is split into two distinct sides: one side is for take-out and cafeteria style dining, and the other side is for full-service dining, which includes a large bar that takes up literally 50% of the room. Opting for the waitress experience, we had a very friendly and courteous server who, through no fault of her own (she was the ONLY waitress) was somewhat overwhelmed. Needless to say, as frantic as she was, she always managed to keep her genuine smile each time she apologetically approached our table. My wife ordered soup and a sandwich off the very casual and reasonably priced menu. I ordered a salad and the veal parmigiana dinner. After a long delay, a 'food-runner' finally came out from the kitchen with my wife's sandwich in one hand and my salad in the other. They plopped the food in front of us saying 'here you go guys' and then high-tailed it back to the kitchen. It then took us a few minutes to finally get the attention of our busy waitress to see if she could please get us some silverware. She apologized and returned a few minutes later with some paper-napkin wrapped utensils. 'Okay...let's eat what we've got' we both thought as we dug in. After 5-10 minutes, with my wife half through with her sandwich, and me mostly through my salad, her now lukewarm minestrone soup finally arrived alongside my veal perm dinner. We smiled and thanked the food runner, and dug in. Verdict: soup was bland, but more importantly, not even hot. My veal parm dinner had a very nice sauce (served with what they call 'The Mess', which on this particular night appeared to be just ziti?). The sauce was actually quite good, and I would have really enjoyed my meal, had it not been for the squishy undercooked veal that I still managed to swallow (as I said, the sauce saved it, and I was very hungry). Even though the food was served in an unusual fashion (traditionally, my wife's soup & my salad are served at the same time in every other restaurant that we've ever eaten at, but this does not seem to be the Comella's way), we laughed and chalked it up to the possibility that this restaurant might have just opened THAT NIGHT (Saturday, May 14)? All in all: friendly people, moderate food, and ridiculous service. It almost seems to us that this was a restaurant designed for the take-out businesses, & then, as an afterthought, they decided to have full-service dining, but no one ever really thought out how to coordinate the front of the house with the back of the house. I've been here a couple times. This review is for the bar side. The bar and high tops surrounding the bar are both very nice and the TVs are great. This has the potential to be a great sports bar. The look and feel of the place give it the second star. The beer is way over priced. This is a takeout place on one side with a small bar on the other. Beer prices are comparable to downtown Boston. Also, do not expect them to have the beer you like. Both bud and bud light they did not have. They were 'out' of one and did not stock the other. How hard is it to grab a case of beer? Their beer selection is minute so even if you drink what everyone else carries, they may not, or they may be 'out'. We ordered pizza. Way too doughy and the pepperoni was a very low quality. I keep trying to go back because I like the food when its made the way I order it but I can honestly say today is my last time coming here ...
