If you're looking for an amazing eatery after church on Sundays...this is the place!!! We met some friends there & it was pretty crowded. We had to sit at a separate table but that's what we get for taking the loooong route to get there. The place ambiance is truly family friendly & our server, Juanita was very attentive & personable. Although it was crowded, it took longer than we expected to get our order done. But once our order was placed, we had our piping hot food within 15 minutes...maybe even less!!! Two thumbs up!!! Both my daughter & I ordered the fried catfish plate because we heard rumors that it was soooo good! Maaaan! It did NOT disappoint!!! It was truly one of the TOP TIER of catfish in the Dallas area!!! My first time at Tops Cafe'! Let's put it in the "What's the name of that place with the Good?" Met with family to have breakfast ordered the fried Catfish. Yes I said fish for breakfast with hash browns and grits. I didn't have to order extra crispy, didn't need hot sauce, mustard, pickles, onion or bread. All was needed was my hands and mouth. Thanks to other yelp reviews I took my dad and we checked this place out. Breakfast food is spot on what you want and need for breakfast. Great plates of food. Tasty. Cooked right. Great dishes all around. Recently stopped for early dinner and just as good. Best part I purchase an entire coconut meringue pie. And it was almost spot on equal to my mothers. Popped in around 8:45 this morning, looking for breakfast. Most restaurants in the area served Mexican food and wanted something different. Love the old time feel of this diner. I am sure there have been a million eggs served at this place. Ordered the Tops Omelette with a side of oatmeal. Oatmeal was good, filling. Included raisins, brown sugar and milk on the side. Place is dirty and smells weird. The bathrooms are disgusting and the floors everywhere are sticky, if it's not regularly cleaned in the dining area and the bathroom you know the kitchen is nasty. But it is not my job to keep up with their tables I AM THE MANAGER AND THEY ARE THE SERVERS! They are winning up to 300$ a day while I'm winning 120 !! We love Tops, but Betty needs to do more work or find another job! She handles the register and takes orders to go. If there's no one paying or to go orders pending, she sits on a stool near the back and/or is on her phone. She's not friendly, welcoming, nor pleasant. When the waitresses are trying to seat customers, take orders, refill coffee, and clean tables, Betty could refill coffee and check on customers while waiting. She could also clean a table or two. This is NOT the first time we've made this observation. I learned her name only recently. I enjoy Tops because it's near our house and it's been here for many years. Despite a small language barrier and having to flip on my Spanish, my waitress was quick, attentive and sweet. Coffee was nothing more than a cup of foldgers! I had the fried okra, the mac and cheese, the mashed potatoes, and the meatloaf, which you can get with tomato sauce or brown gravy. Each day the chef makes something different. It was very heavy and very what you expected. Someone else tried the chicken fried steak. The chicken and the okra tasted, I'm not sure how you say it, frozen and heated up and put on the plate. This place is very affordable and fast, if you're in a hurry, which we were. It's sort of like the old Dot's in North Austin. But I wouldn't drive to Dallas just to check it out. It is filled with Oak Cliff regulars, and it's a bleu hair special type of place, sort of like the Nighthawk. Breakfast was very good I enjoyed the vibes at the place I'm in my 30's so I appreciated seeing the older folks rolling in the place the breakfast was good i ordered grits / cheese eggs and cheese along with a fried piece of catfish, the catfish was welled seasoned love the crunchy taste and it paired well with the grits and eggs I left very full oh and I ordered an Arnold Palmer to go with (sweet tea and a splash of lemonade) but I think they put a little too much lemonade lol it gave a tangy taste but it's all good I still finished it all. We moved and then the manager or owner, told us that they stop serving at 330. We would only have 30 minutes to eat and then they will clean. We left! There were a lot of people eating. So I guess they will push them out at 4. They need to change their sign. They need to post when they stop serving, not when they close. Never going back. read more

A dear friend took us here and it's always difficult when a friend really loves a place and you want to be polite when they ask you if you enjoyed your meal ... I've been here quite a few times. It can be packed at times, but that's the same for any half decent place on a Sunday afternoon. So why Sunday's??? Well, on the menu they have different choices for different days. The main staples are always available, but there's some other dishes that come and go. I go for the Chicken and Dressing, side of mash, and mac. Before you eat, you get a basket of rolls and cornbread. Plus the jelly, butter, and honey are a nice treat. I enjoy some cornbread with butter and slight honey before my food arrives. This dish is good. For those that have read my other reviews, you know that I won't throw out the word great, even for places I frequent. Good is a compliment. I've had a couple bad experiences. One was the food was the chicken and dressing was lacking, not even the cranberry sauce that comes with it helped, and the other time was service related, as well as the food not being great. That time I tried the chicken fried chicken, but it wasn't so good, just eh. I recommend the chicken and dressing at this place, because it's the only thing I order after trying a lackluster burger, and chicken fried chicken. 3/5 stars from me on this particular dish. It keeps me coming back from time to time. That's all I have. Places I frequent usually get 3-stars... I'm itching to find the first place that will get my first 4 and 5 star ratings. This place was a little busy from what I was told they normally are and especially on a rainy day. The food didn't take long to arrive at all. Our waiter wasn't that great. Although it was busy, she seemed to favor one part of the restaurant more, not sure if they were family or regulars. A member of my table had to hold up her coffee cup in order to get a refill. I took my wheelchair bound mother there tonight at 5:55 p.m., an hour and five minutes before closing and the waitress told me they were closed except for to go orders. I told her we would be less than an hour, and she said go somewhere else. They obviously wanted to go home and close up an hour early, I wonder if the owner knows his staff is turning away business so that they don't have to work. I have been going to this cafe every since it's been in Wynnewood. Today I had a horrible experience. I walked in about 10:40 and set down. After @15 minutes someone gave us water. Then a couple of minutes the waitress came to our table to apologize for the long wait and gave us menus. About 10 minutes later she came back and took our order. We ordered our meal with side salads after about 10 more minutes I stopped her to remind her we never received our salads of which she advised me that they were really busy giving out water and drinks to other customers. She then went and got our side salads but didn't give us any silverware. I then told her that our meal was sitting in the window getting cold. She reminded me again that they had been very busy. I noticed that other waitresses were taking care of their customers pretty quick and hers were just waiting. I also noticed people being served and finishing there food while we were still waiting on salads. I advised her that the salads would have only taken 2 minutes to serve. At that point I noticed my salad look wilted as if it had gotten too cold. Because of the way we were treated I decided I didn't want to spend my money here. She made us feel as though we were not just as important as the other customers. I feel she needed training on how to address customers to not make them feel less important. We promptly left and went to Norma's cafe where we were greeted, given our drinks, and served within 10 minutes of being there. I will no longer spend my money at tops Cafe. If U like bland taco salads with warm lettuce and greasy meat and no seasonings, this is the place to eat at. The art of a good taco salad is chilled lettuce, top with hot taco meat (can be hamburger meat season with taco mix to give it the favoring needed). The salad did contain fresh sliced purple onion (fairly sharp to the taste) on the side and good mix of tomato and cheese added and served in an authentic deep fried taco shell. With just a little effort, this could be a great taco salad and probably a good seller as well but as served now at $8.75 won't buy it again. read more
