Two and a half years ago, we were coming here for lunch for the first time and as I walked through the parking lot, I tripped over a parking paver and broke my trochanter - my hip. Ugh. Al least I was next door to Methodist. Today, I came back, near closing time and we had a lovely lunch! I had a giant patty melt that was very good with Sautéed Mushrooms, Caramelized Onions, Swiss, Provolone, Roasted Garlic Aioli, and Grilled Wheat Bread and a choice of side. There was a long list of sides but I chose the chunky seasoned brunch potatoes. They were crispy but not dry. Just Delicious. My husband had them, too. He ordered the "Which Came First" Sandwich. A Chicken Fried Chicken Breast, Shredded Lettuce, Sliced Tomato, Mayo, and 2 Fried Eggs on Grilled Sourdough, also with a choice of side. Our waiter was patient as Jonathon's continues to serve breakfast and there was much to think about. A very nice man, we were served very savory sandwiches and had a great time. My daughter and I decided to brunch here today. I haven't been to Jonathan's since they moved locations. It's more spacious than the last place. It's really nice and simple. Service was good and everyone was helpful. The food and menu was the same which is a good thing. I was really glad they didn't make drastic changes to the food/menu like most places do when they get bigger establishments. The food is obviously a little pricey but the portions they give you have VERY decent. Worth the money. My only complaints are the Steal Oats had no flavor. They were cooked right and had good looking toppings but bland, and the Latte with salted caramel was too sweet and left a weird aftertaste. I would probably never get their coffee again. My daughter said the gravy was also very bland and seemed to be missing something. Other than that the food was good. We did order a Chicken Fried Steak and eggs with a side of pancakes to go for my son. The steak is huge! It was the size of the container. Let me tell you now. This is the best breakfast spot in Dallas! I came here randomly after yoga and when I say everything I ate was a 10/10. It was a 10 out of 10. Our service for a Saturday morning was really good & our food came out fast. I ordered the Breakfast with brunch potatoes , scrambled eggs with cheese and their pancakes! The only downside of Jonathon's was the wait. It's so popular that reservations are highly recommended. Once seated the service was excellent. But the best was the food. Delicious fried chicken and waffles. That's all I've had and I would definitely return. Chicken breast was thin and crispy and served piping hot. Gravy was peppery and flavorful and the waffle was light fluffy and just right. Everything was seasoned just like I like it. We were there on a weekday mid morning and sat at our table catching up for a long time and the service was friendly and efficient and left us alone until we were ready. I've been to this restaurant multiple times before, and while it's always been okay, today's experience was absolutely awful--I'll never be back! We arrived as a party of three, but while one of us was still parking, the hostess (a typically gruff but today outright rude older red-headed woman) flat-out refused to add us to the waitlist. Instead of allowing us to wait inside like any decent establishment would, she actually told us to go outside and not come back in until our entire party was present. Keep in mind--it was 50 degrees and raining. There was no kindness, no hospitality--just a nasty attitude as if we were inconveniencing her by trying to dine there. The way she treated us, as well as the patrons who arrived behind us, was appalling. Frankly, I will never give this place another dime of my money. Restaurants should be welcoming, not act like they're doing customers a favor by allowing them inside. If you enjoy being treated poorly before you even sit down, then maybe this is the place for you. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and support a business that actually values its patrons. In today's world, a little kindness goes a long way--but clearly, she doesn't understand that concept. This place just isn't it anymore and doesn't deserve the continued patronage of the local community that has supported them for years. Wow! Unexpectedly delicious. Evidently this is the second location. I had the first book marked forever but,never got by. After a staycation at the nearby Joule Hotel in Downtown,I was andeling for a good, although not run of the mill, breakfast. I stumbled upon this place and immediately "felt" it. So headed over the bridge from downtown to the edge of Oak Cliff . Even on a weekday morning after prime breakfast hours the parking lot was busy. Melissa is a horrible, rude and nasty person who should not be in any customer service role. After sitting at the bar for 10 minutes with no service or acknowledgement, I asked the bartender (who has been packing to-go plates) if we could get waters -- before I can even get my statement out she immediately replied, "I'll be there in a minute, I'm doing something". Her attitude was nasty from that moment on. She finally comes over and just stands in front of me and doesn't say a word just looks at me and I say "I would like a purple drink" she replies can I see your ID, I hand her my ID and ask her "will it be a problem getting service today?" She replies "that's on you" to which I say "well it's sort of on you and the reason I asked is because we've been sitting here for over 10 minutes and you seem to annoyed that I asked for service. She became even nastier after that she proceeded to tell me that I can leave if I wanted to and says "nobody cares, I'm the manager" to which I say "that's shocking because you have a horrible attitude" and she says "you can go." She did indeed get cursed out as I told her that she will not address me in that way. This is not the first time I've experience this level of nastiness in this place. Perfect Diner Brunch!!! Let me address some of the issues in a few negative reviews: 1) "Rude hostess": she's not rude, she's direct and busy AND it's a diner! Not The Mansion! The rules are written down and standard; you will not be seated until your party is there. Common restaurant standard. Stop whining... 2) Food or gravy is too peppery: It's called Chef Jon's Peppered Gravy; why are you surprised there's black pepper??? Don't like black pepper? Go someplace else and don't overcrowd this gem because we loved the food. So we strolled in Saturday afternoon and they were still hopping close to closing time. Cute decor. I love the sign at the bar that reads "Mind your own Biscuits and Life will be Gravy" We had the Danger Dogs ( pancake batter coated turkey sausage links on sticks) Imagine breakfast corn dogs. Loved them! Wish they had them at the state fair! The Biscuits and gravy were savory and served in a bowl with turkey sausage. We loved the biscuits. They were different! Flaky and moist yet very flavorful! And yes, there was a lot of black pepper, it's in the description and that's why we liked them. We also had the Migas, Peanut Butter Jelly Time Waffles and Chef Jon's chicken fried steak. I consider myself a chicken fried steak connoisseur and this was a GREAT chicken fried steak. Juicy in the middle and coated with a crispy cracker crusted crust. (Try saying that three times fast) Dallas is saturated with culinary hotspots. Hard to find someplace you're willing to repeat. Attentive, friendly service from the moment we stepped in the door. Ordered fried chicken and waffles, cheesy grits, chicken and biscuit, and chicken fried steak. Stumbled upon Jonathan's during an overnight stay in Oak Cliff, great breakfast spot! Finding a parking spot was troublesome, so you'll have to circle around during a busy time of day. Unless the whole dining party is present, don't expect to be seated. Service was great, our waiter was attentive. Hostess on the other hand, quite rude/blunt. I went here for breakfast on my birthday while visiting from out of town. This spot came highly recommended from family members. I wish i had ordered something else and my meal was just ok. I ordered the migas and my dad ordered the eggs Benedict. His was much better than mine. I am an eggs Benedict officianado and was impressed with the hollandaise. It was the right color, consistency and was tangy enough. Most Hollandaise sauces Ive had out do not have enough lemon juice in them for me and this was perfect. (Side note- i ordered eggs Benedict at a different restaurant the next day and was really disappointed with a few things, but especially the hollandaise.) Will definitely have to come here again! I found this place on yelp. We were greeted and taken to a table but decided to sit at the bar because it was a bit drafty with the door opening and closing. The wicked ginger drink was tasty. I love ginger so I was excited to try the drink. Honestly, the breakfast corn dogs are why I came. I wished the pancakes were a bit sweeter, but I was happy to see the meat inside was turkey! I wasn't a fan of the spicy mustard, but with some syrup and ketchup, it was just what I was looking for. The grits were amazing without any doctoring, and the parm cheese in it was a tasty surprise. It seems they use all fresh everything there, which I love. I must say they do give a lot of food... you will not leave hungry! The chicken steak was a bit bland to me but the gravy helped that. We love the original Jonathon's, but the Covid seating capacity limits have made it even harder to be seated at a prime time. Enter Jonathon's Diner; only 6 blocks south on the same street (N Beckley). The dining room is a bit larger here at the Diner; makes a good back-up plan! We waited about 15-20 mins to be seated, and as usual, we were glad we waited! The Chicken & Waffles were still the best in Dallas - Jonathon's version cannot be beat! WAY better than Roscoe's (sorry Snoop)!! I ordered the Working Man's Salad and was astounded at the huge serving - and it was loaded with 4 different meats! Like a pizza on lettuce! Fantastic! The Chicken Gumbo Soup was shockingly good as well! The service was quick and our waiter was so helpful. Our food was perfect, and we left STUFFED. Seriously; this place deserves 6 stars. read more
