Decided to stop in for some lunch while in Dallas with my Grandma on a "daycation" and was greeted with an empty restaurant I guess between lunch rushes. Ordered Turkey, Jalapeño Cheddar Sausage and Mac and Cheese on the 2 meat combo plate. First off, that was $27 which I thought was rather high but with the hype I thought it might be worth it. The turkey was tender and juicy and rather flavorful, except for the end piece of turkey breast (I assume) with the skin side which was extremely tough. The jalapeño cheddar sausage was okay, but it didn't really retain either the jalapeño, cheddar, or the smoky taste which I thought was disappointing. The Mac and Cheese had bacon bits on it which were nice and crispy but the Mac and Cheese wasn't very rich or complex flavor wise, which I found slightly underwhelming. The sauce was super runny and while it had flavor, I never think having to put sauce on stuff to give it flavor is the answer. All that being said, for $27 I wasn't going to leave anything on the plate. The service I thought was rather hands off and I'm surprised nobody came and checked on us although that may be just how things are. The ambiance was cool with old license plates and pictures along with some cool western themed things up on the walls to make it seem warm and homey. All in all, I was left with the feeling that there should've been more and I was kinda disappointed after all the hype I've seen and all the gravitas that the name Pecan Lodge carries with it. I'd say probably a 6.5-7/10 so that lands me at 3 stars because it really didn't feel 4 star worthy. read more

Man I was so disappointed when I came in today for lunch! This used to be my absolute favorite place in Dallas. It's been 3 years since I was here last. I knew something was up when we pulled up right at noon and there wasn't a line out the door like there usually was. One of our favorite classic Texas BBQ joints to visit while in Dallas. Lines are sometimes very long during weekend lunch hours, but it is worth the wait. The meats are always very tasty and delicious, and our favorites are usually the burnt ends, brisket, jalapeno sausage, and pork ribs, and they go well with their house spicy BBQ sauce. Their sides are also yummy, especially the fried okra, pinto beans, and collard greens. I've been to Pecan Lodge multiple times, and it's definitely one of the most famous BBQ spots in Dallas. Deep Ellum is also a fun area to explore, so it makes for a nice stop if you're visiting. I really enjoy their brisket and ribs, and the sides are pretty decent as well. It's not the cheapest BBQ, and I do wish the portions were a little more generous, but the flavor is solid. If you're visiting, I'd recommend showing up early. Like many famous BBQ places, the popular items can sell out pretty quickly. Parking tip: try using the parking lot under I-45 nearby. read more

Yes it's good BBQ but there are higher standards in Texas and this doesn't blow you away in the same way some of the greats in this State do. I came on a Tuesday night and it was pretty empty. I was alone so I got just the brisket, the jalapeno cheddar sausage, the jalapeno hominy, collard greens, and the banana pudding. The brisket was fine. Some bites were tender, juicy, nice salty balance, and other bites were dry and lacked flavor. Overall inconsistent. The sausage was pretty good as the cheese wasn't overly rich and had a nice spice to it. The collard greens were a little on the sweet side which I didn't love. The jalapeno hominy were delicious as the slight cheddar flavor with a little heat was a pleasant contrast for something that can be pretty bland by itself. The banana pudding was delicious. Not overly sweet, creamy and rich but not so heavy after a heavy main course. I like the vibe but it's fun when a BBQ place carves the slices in front of you. The service is fine. It overall looks like a fun place to go and given how they have live music, etc. it's clear that's what they're going for. But I prefer a place that's focused on its craft over vibe. read more

Ordered take out and wow - it lives up to the hype. The turkey was thickly sliced. The sausage was a full piece and the pork rib was large. All were tasty and all did not taste the same- sometimes you get a three meat platter and all the meat has the same sauce on it that was not the case here each meat at its own individual flavor. The other thing I liked about the food here is that the smoke taste is not overwhelming. I have had barbecue from many places across Texas and sometimes I can't eat it because the smoke smell is so strong that I am totally turned off and don't want to eat the food. Here. This place definitely has a good reputation, but my experience ended up being pretty middle of the road. The interior is extremely casual (almost "busted" in a sense). It's not quite the atmosphere I expected given how popular the place is. The food was a mixed bag. The burnt ends were okay, but honestly nothing special. They were fine, just not the standout I was expecting. The pork sausage was actually pretty good flavor-wise, but the casing was really tough. I had to bite down pretty hard to get through it, which was not the most pleasant experience. The mac and cheese had a tiny bit of spice to it, which I liked, but the texture was more mealy than creamy. For dessert I had the peach cobbler. It was decent, but leaned a little too granola heavy for my taste and did not quite bake together the way I expected. I was hoping for something more cohesive and gooey. The place is expensive as heck, but the service is excellent, and the food delivers every time. This is a very well-run establishment. I ordered the beef rib, and it was absolutely humongous. It tasted just as good as it looked. Tender, flavorful, and worth the trip by itself. My only complaint is the fries. At these prices, they should be more careful about serving them hot. Mine came out cold, and I had to send them back for a fresh batch. To their credit, they handled it without any issue. Overall, this place never disappoints. My brother came to visit from Houston and wanted to eat here. We showed up as soon as the restaurant opened and there was already a long line. Seating looks limited but we were able to find a table pretty easily. My hubby and I ordered a three meat plate. We chose the turkey, brisket, and jalapeño cheddar beef sausage. Mid Way too dry brisket, even for a lean cut, mac & cheese slightly curdled and not seasoned, queso was decent, never ordered queso at a bbq spot but their loaded queso was pretty good even considering the slightly curdled texture and lack of seasoning, sausage was pretty good but I'd say they might under pack their links, which would explain why they serve them unsliced. Banana pudding was a disgrace, I don't mean to sound harsh but it may have been the worst banana pudding I've ever had, just super bland. BBQ sauce is very good and flavorful. They charge here for bread on the side, which is a first for me in all of the BBQ spots I've visited. Also their energy is strange here, the hostess/cashier was very nice, but the guy serving up the plates seemed cold with a few of the customers, busboy did not hold the door open for my lady when he walked back into the restaurant on our way out just let it close on her face. We heard about the famous Pecan Lodge. It was our 3rd BBQ stop during our time in Dallas. We came during lunch and it wasn't busy. We ordered beef rib, and their 3 meats combo with 1 side. The 3 meats we got were pork ribs, brisket, and turkey. I wish they would give 2 pork ribs and less turkey. There were like 4 slices of turkey and 1 pork rib. The turkey was good and so was the pork rib. The brisket was pretty dry. It was thick but dry. Their beef rib was good, more meat than others and not too much fat, however lacked some flavor. They don't give you complimentary bread, like other places. We initially got their crisscross fries and they were god awful. It was too fried to the point that it was hollow inside, we returned it but didn't expect anything else. But one of the pit masters came out to apologize and offered to replace with another side, we accepted and got their Mac and cheese which turned out to be the best Mac n cheese! Over all, compared to the other 2 places we tried, we thought pecan lodge was in 3rd mostly due to the flavors not being as strong as the other 2 we went to (Cattleack and Heims). Stopped by for some bbq on our way back from the state fair. There is a parking lot next to the restaurant that is paid parking, but can be validated inside the restaurant. A historic Dallas BBQ spot with solid but not spectacular BBQ. Needs the BBQ sauce to take it to a 4 star out of 5 My wife hadn't been to Pecan Lodge and it had been a minute for me so we decided to come. I was curious how it would stack up so many years later now that we've tried Cattleack, Hutchins, Terry Black's, Goldee's. We ordered a lot of food to try them all. Service was a little less personal, no one cutting the meats in front of you. You order and then your name gets called with your tray(s) of food. I tried asking at if they could cut me a smaller beef rib when I ordered but the cashier said you cannot make requests for size, which is fine but was able to be accommodated at other BBQ places when they're preparing the meats in front of you. Overall for most meats, I was disappointed how dry they were. Including the brisket, pork ribs. The burnt ends were very dry. They needed the BBQ sauce to make it solid BBQ. The pork rib flavor was better than others and not as salty as Goldee's, which my wife and I liked. The sausage was good with some spice from the black pepper at the end. The beef rib was a nice surprise and wasn't as salty as other places which I liked. Some others may like the seasoning stronger though. For the sides, the Mac and cheese and baked beans stood out. Very gooey Mac and cheese, better than Terry Black's, and very good flavor for the beans. The coleslaw was average and had an unexpected spicy kick to it at the end. The banana pudding was also average and not spectacular. Overall, we spent a good amount of money for not so impressive BBQ. What saves this rating to be a 4 star is the beef rib and sides. Parking in Deep Ellum is also horrendous. Pecan lodge is definitely a place worth trying out. Starting off, you stand in a line to place your order. Your menu is the chalkboard that has a plethora of tasty options. Afterwards, you find your own seats. You can choose to dine in or outside, you even have the option to sit at the bar. Your order is ready for pick up, after they announce your number. With so many people coming in going, you would think the staff would get behind on keeping the place clean. Well, they didn't get behind and I was quite impressed on how clean and ordering the staff were. My only complaint I have for this restaurant, is the fact they don't offer free sides for the biggest entree on their menu. The "Through" meal cost $155 and even though it feeds 3-5 people. It should've included 2-3 sides for free. The Trough meal consisted of the following- Ribs (1lbs)- tender and the seasoning was absolutely delicious. It came with no bbq sauce grilled onto it, and it didn't need any Pulled pork (1/2lbs)- perfect amount of smoke to this meat. Squirt some of the table *sauce onto them, and it will add even more flavor to the pork. Beef rib (1pc)- huge beef rib, that was seasoned to perfection. Every bite the meat fell off the bone. Sausage (2pcs) - links was good and not greasy at all. The table sauce again added a good flavor to them Brisket (1lbs) - nice thick slices of brisket. As juicy as these slices were, to me they were a little too fatty for my liking. I know many people like the fat in their meat because that's where the flavor is. So if you're that type of person, you will truly enjoy the brisket. Sides- Potato salad- Absolutely delicious... it's very rare a restaurant makes a really good potato salad. But Pecan Lodge has it right Mac and cheese- not a fan of the liquid cheese sauce type of mac and cheese Fried okra- seasoned and fried good. No greasy pieces at all Collard greens- totally different than what I'm accustomed to. These greens have a slight vinegar taste, but it's followed by a sweet and tangy flavor. It definitely works and I like it. *Table sauce- if you're looking for the traditional bbq sauce, you can forget it. You won't find that here, and if you did find it. I didn't see it. Pecan Lodge sauce is thin and runny. It's a vinegar based sauce that has a sweet and tangy flavor, is similar to what the collard greens taste like. It was on a Thursday evening expecting it to be super packed based on all of the previous reviews & pictures. But it wasn't which was good for me because I was on a schedule and had to get back to work. I ordered the brisket sandwich *my fav and the hot mess without cheese. Not kidding you my food was ready in about 3min. Which let me know everything was already made and ready to go.. once I got my food I got back in the car and started to drive home, at a red light I checked my food and noticed cheese on my "hot mess" which really just made everything worse. I was able to call in and tell them and they told me to come back to get another one, but again I was on a schedule so I didn't go back but he offered to remake it for me when I do decide to come back. The food was okay the baked sweet potato looked old especially after seeing the melted old cheese.. but I couldn't eat it cause of the cheese so I can't tell you how it was! But the brisket sandwich was good! The bread was everything! It could have been fresher I'd say but hey that what happens when the food just sits up the heating lamp or hot box! Parking is street or if you can find a lot that's around there, so be prepared to pay either way! or you can risk it and just park on the side and wait. We've been here a couple times for beer and music, but this was our first time stopping in specifically for food. It always smells really good so we wanted to give it a try. It was a Saturday early evening and they had a pretty good size crowd. Not too overwhelming but enough where you had to stand in line almost 10 minutes. We ordered the 2 plate combo and a drink. We got pork ribs, brisket and fried okra. It consisted of two nice sized ribs and 2 nice sized slices of brisket. The sauce on the table didn't excite either of us. Fortunately the meats were seasoned enough that they didn't need the sauce. Both meats were tender and juicy. I've tried a couple other bbq places and i preferred the flavor of the ribs here. I live 15 minutes from Lockhart- so when I saw people lining up to pay $42/lb for Pecan Lodge's brisket, I assumed it would be worth the wait. Or the price. It was neither. Just trying to *at least* consume, if not enjoy, some of the brisket had me looking for white bread to wrap it in. No sliced bread here, like every other bbq establishment this side of the Mississippi, but they have rolls (?) they can sell you... The brisket is super dry and ironically the sausage is super wet.
