I had been wanting to try this place for a long time, so I finally decided to celebrate my birthday here and I'm so glad I did! At first, I was a little hesitant because the menu is fairly small, but after my meal, I can see why. Every dish we ordered was absolutely a 10/10. I've been wanting to visit Tiffany Derry's acclaimed restaurant in Farmers Branch and finally got the chance! The space is inviting, casual, bright and comfortable. We started with the fried green tomatoes which were golden brown and crisp. The rhubarb jam made this southern speciality pop. The best part of our meal was the cast iron cornbread and my mother's gumbo. The gumbo had a nicely brown roux and so much flavor. Tiffany is so lucky if her mama was making this gumbo growing up. The cornbread was also next level. The butter was presented under a smoky glass dome and the combo of syrup and salty butter was scrumptious. Hub and I shared the red fish with shrimp fried rice. Roots Southern Table was honestly amazing. I've been a huge fan of Top Chef, and Tiffany Derry has always been one of my favorites. So when I found out we were getting a chance to try one of her restaurants, I was all in. Didn't get to meet her this time (lol), but I've met a few top chefs while living in Vegas, so I'll take the win on the food alone. Keenan, our server, absolutely made the experience. Super knowledgeable, great energy, and honestly just told us what we should order and he nailed it. Every recommendation hit. We started with the cornbread, which is easily in my personal top 5. Then the duck fat fried chicken... I'm not even going to try to describe it properly, just order it. Trust me. The deviled eggs were another standout, and then the greens... I've lived in the South, and I can confidently say these were the best greens I've ever had. No contest. There were about 10 of us, so we got to try a bunch of different mains, and I didn't hear a single complaint from anyone. I had the short rib, and the depth of flavor was insane, simple dish, but it hit hard in all the right ways. Finished it off with the German chocolate cake, and that first bite straight up gave me a Ratatouille moment, took me right back to being a kid in 1984 eating my grandma's birthday cake. Just unreal. I had high hopes for this location because I absolutely love Radici, and everyone has been recommending Roots to me. Unfortunately, it just didn't live up to the expectations I had. I do want to start with the positives. Our waiter was fantastic. He was very attentive, explained the menu thoroughly, and provided excellent service. The food also came out incredibly fast and piping hot, which is becoming rare these days. We started with the cornbread, and it was easily a 10/10. It was worth every bit of the $12. We ordered the fried chicken, greens, shrimp fried rice, biscuits, and hot water cornbread. The fried chicken was crispy and tender, but it lacked seasoning. I'd give it a 7/10. They served it with a house hot sauce, but surprisingly it had no heat and almost no flavor. I even asked the person I was dining with if they tasted anything because it was like pouring sauce on the chicken without changing the flavor at all. The greens were just okay on their own, but once we added the vinegar they became amazing. That made me wonder why the vinegar isn't incorporated into the greens from the start. The hot water cornbread had virtually no flavor. The shrimp fried rice was cooked really well, but it had an unexpected Caribbean-style seasoning that threw me off. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I was expecting, and it made it hard to fully enjoy. The biscuits were probably the biggest disappointment. They were dry and hard. One thing I also noticed is that, for a family style restaurant where you're encouraged to order several dishes to share, the tables feel too small. Once all the food arrived, there wasn't much room left, and even packing up our leftovers was awkward because of the lack of space. One standout that deserves recognition was the iced tea. It had what tasted like a subtle hint of mint and was incredibly refreshing. Easy 10/10. From the cuts of chicken we received, it appears they break down and fry whole chickens, which is perfectly fine. However, at $56 for a fried chicken that lacked seasoning, I found the price hard to justify. Maybe the cooking method or oil contributes to the cost, but I expected much more flavor for that price. Overall, I'd rate my experience a 7.5/10. Would I come back? Yes. I'd be willing to give Roots another chance and try something different from the menu. But when I hear Southern food, I expect bold seasoning and comforting flavors, and that's the one area where this meal really fell short. read more

I love Tiffany on tv and was so excited at the chance to visit her restaurant and try her food, and it did not disappoint. We all enjoyed our dishes thoroughly. Each time we've visited, it has been packed. The menu at Roots has a variety of offerings, all with a twist/elevation on Southern soul food cuisine. There are some items that are constant on their menu and usually items that are created seasonally. Our waiter was helpful, pleasant and professional and the overall service was excellent. I ordered †he scallops with ravioli w/mushrooms and hubby order the redfish over rice. Both were delicious. The scallops and redfish were perfectly cooked. For dessert we ordered the Orange Juice Cake and the Berries and Lemonade sorbet. The OJ cake had a really good taste, but it is served floating in liquid...which makes the cake too wet. I think if there was less juice, it might keep some of it's flavor without making the cake so soggy. With that being said...there was no cake left. We didn't drink them the NA champagne flute smelled like soap and tasted like it too. The NA drinks also tasted like soap. Only downside to the experience was the drinks. That usually means you definitely want to wait for a table even if you don't like loud restaurants. Next time I think we would choose to dine in their covered patio to cut the noise a bit. We were very glad we made a reservation. About service. The first thing the waitress asked was if we had any allergies. Thank you! She made it so easy for my daughter to order gluten free. Our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu and offered to triple check for gluten free. She constantly checked back with us despite being very busy managing other tables. And the best part: two of our diners have Down syndrome. She treated them like everyone else, talking to them, clarifying information, and making sure they were enjoying themselves. All the staff were friendly, warm smiles, and genuine. Every single thing we ordered was a delight. The peas pod salad (sorry, it was inhaled before I remembered to take a picture). The cornbread and biscuits tasted as if they were from my Grandmother Mildred's Southern Georgia kitchen. The Texas Redfish and fried rice had so much flavor. This restaurant is very close to where my daughter plays volleyball so for me the location is amazing! It's also right next to a dart station if you'd rather not drive. Since it's so close to somewhere I go to twice a week, every week for 6 months out of the year I have been here twice so far. Once with a volleyball mom friend and once for an anniversary dinner with my husband. On both trips we ordered the fried chicken and corn bread, that's how good it is! We have been to Roots Southern table several time and it never disappoints. We started with their vanilla old fashion which had a nice vanilla sugar rim. Smooth and refreshing. For dinner we had the fried chicken, southern greens, and hop john rice. The chicken is one of the best. I can't think of one better. They fry it in duck fat which gives it a great flavor and texture. The southern greens comes with corn bread/hush puppies for soaking up the greens liquor. However, the best bite of the night was actually a side dish. The FRIED YAMS!!!!! Yes, in all caps so you really understand lol. I couldn't stop eating these even though I was stuffed to capacity. Roots Southern Table has been on my list for years after enjoying the duck fat fried chicken in Austin. This location is advertised as a more high-end fare, with a more diverse menu and a selection of alcoholic beverages to enhance the experience. My partner decided book an experience through Capital One Venture X for our anniversary. We started with the fuyu persimmon carpaccio and it was very tasty! The pool of vinegar makes it quite tart, which might be too much for those who are not immense pickle fiends, but it was perfect for us. The cheese and candied nuts paired really nicely with the sweet persimmon. If I go back it'll be for this. The biscuits with butter and apple sauce are absolutely delightful. I am not a big biscuit person but I dreamt of them that night. Unfortunately, the namesake fried chicken was a huge let down. The crispy skin was a little too crunchy? It wasn't the delightful, decadent crunch I remembered. The best pieces were a bit too crunchy but some of the worse off pieces felt maybe 30 seconds from becoming a carbon coat. The meat, which I remembered to be succulent, was dry and quite flavorless. I found my salvation by putting generous heaps of that lovely apple sauce on my chicken. My partner asked for hot sauce but it wasn't spicy. And the spicier one was also not spicy. But the flavors were tart and peppery, and definitely balance out the richness of the chicken well for people who don't have the salt tolerance of a slug like me. The service was a little confusing. The staff seemed hospitable but also distracted, despite a slow evening, and we were forgotten a few times by the first few people who stopped by our table . But we were also regarded with warmth by one of the staff members and given extra apple sauce to take home upon request. When we got our check, we were surprised to see that whoever put the tip in had selected a high percentage without consulting us, which felt like insult to injury after being so let down by the chicken. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very casual. It can certainly be interpreted as a take on the cozy neighborhood diner. The music was pleasant but too loud - I think this was due to the lack of noise dampening and a lot of hard tile floor, counters and tables to bounce noise off of. We were lucky it wasn't too crowded. Overall, I think 3 stars for the food and 2 stars when accounting for rate of return for price. At Mike's Chicken or Hattie B's casual energy doesn't matter much. But when it's $56 for a chicken I do hope that more effort is put into ambiance, service, and food quality, three key parts of a dining experience. Also, just in case other cardholders were wondering - we didn't have any special perks for booking the experience - this is just to be transparent but I don't know whether it's Roots at fault for dropping the ball or Capital One for not conveying their promotion of the restaurant experience to Roots. read more

I enjoyed the food there was someone there playing live music, the service was good. They were pretty busy for a Sunday. The scallops had to be the best I've had in a long time. The lamb chops were pretty good overall I've definitely had a little better but overall, I love the place and I'll definitely be back . read more
