Here's a polished version that keeps your enthusiasm and heartfelt message: I recently moved here from the Carolinas, and I was honestly a little nervous about finding food that reminded me of home. When I say **AMAZING**, I mean it! Everything--from the drink to the salad and the collard greens--was absolutely delicious. Every bite took me right back to the Carolinas. Even more than the food, the hospitality was incredible. From the owner to every member of the staff, everyone was so warm and welcoming that, for about 10 minutes, I truly felt like I was back home. Highly recommend!-Ashley read more

10/10 experience! I finally made my way here with my sister shortly after they opened. I never got the chance to try Roots Chicken Shak in Legacy Hall, so when I saw this location had opened, I knew I had to check it out. The inside is cute and colorful, with a decent amount of seating. We were greeted right away by Justin, who took our order and made some great recommendations. Shoutout to Justin--he was nothing short of amazing. His customer service was excellent, and he gave the same welcoming energy to everyone who came in while we were there. I ordered the 3-wing combo with mac and cheese and a biscuit, plus an order of fries with West Indies hot sauce, ranch, and BBQ sauce. I chose Kool-Aid to drink. My sister got the chicken sandwich, red beans and rice, and banana pudding. *Fried chicken wings: Supremely crispy without feeling heavy and perfectly seasoned. *Mac and cheese: Perfectly cheesy and creamy, with a nice browned top that added even more flavor. *Fries: Simply seasoned, but crisp and flavorful. *Biscuit: Buttery and soft. It wasn't hot temperature-wise, but it was still delicious. The Kool-Aid was a 10/10--not too sweet, which was my main concern. I also tasted my sister's red beans and rice, and they were delicious, as was the banana pudding. The whole experience was genuinely enjoyable, and I'll definitely be back! read more

If there's something Dallas needs more of, it's more chicken joints. Luckily, this one is pretty good. Ordered the wings combo- they're made to order so expect to wait 10 minutes. I ordered take out and even by the time I got them home, they were still hot and crispy. The wings were juicy and tender, no dry wings here. The fries were slightly soggy, but I'm willing to bet they'd be crispy if inhaled immediately vs sitting in a box for 10-15 min. The seasoning on the fries was a nice touch. I'll have to come back and try the chicken tenders and maybe some other sides, but so far so good! read more

Me and the wife are nearing an end to our trip for my birthday celebration and we stopped to Roots after seeing it on social media as our last dance in Dallas before we hit the road. We were met with a welcoming environment and a nice smile from Jashaunta or Deshaunte (I'm sorry ma'am if I didn't hear correctly). There we got a catfish sandwich, and a wing combo with fries and red beans and rice (which is a must), and everything was fantastic. Fresh food, waitress was quick to help, food didn't take long and being from Georgia, this place feels like home. Thank yall for being conducive to making your customers feel at home. read more

Roots Chicken Shak is a spinoff of Roots Southern Table. This fast casual restaurants takes the most popular menu item from Root's Southern Table, Duck Fat Fried Chicken, and makes it accessible to the masses. When you simplify the menu and focus on what works best, you end up with delicious fried chicken. My Overall Rating - 5 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - Located in Addison, Root's Chicken Shak is very accessible. There are tons of parking spaces on the outside, and the inside is very welcoming. There's a kiosk you can use, or order from the helpful staff. It's simple, clean, and small touches like flowers on each table make it very welcoming. 1 Star. Service - The staff was awesome. They were very engaging, helpful, and stopped by our table to ask how we were doing. They truly care about the quality of the food and will make sure you have a great experience. 1 Star. Food - Full Disclosure - my visit to Roots Chicken Shak was on Good Friday, so I could not eat meat (Lent). This turned out to be a good thing, because I ordered the Fried Catfish sandwich. When it came out (9 minutes cooked to order), the catfish was piping hot and HUGE. An entire filet stretched across my bun between fresh greens, tartar sauce, tomatoes, and pickles. Be warned, the food is prepared fresh, so you'll want the fried catfish filet to cool down before you take a bite. But when I took a bite, the cornmeal added crunch to the soft, hot catfish which was cooled by the tartar sauce and tomatoes. Best. Fried. Catfish. Ever. Bonus, the red beans and rice and banana pudding were also delicious. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes Yes Yes. Roots Chicken Shak is known for their Duck Fat Fried Chicken, so of course I'll be back to try it once the Lenten season is over. Can't wait to come back and order more banana pudding too. 1 Star. read more

Ambiance 4.5 STARS It's cute, cozy and clean. It's small, but it's a cheerful, happy feeling and bright space. Service 4.5 STARS The staff were friendly and polite. Everyone was really pleasant. The owner is passionate in having a franchise with chef Tiffany Derry. Just let folks know you have real packets of HOT SAUCE! Justin and Corey are GREAT! Food mixed feelings. Fish Sandwich is 5 STARS The fish is well seasoned. The sweet potato bun is nicely paired. The bun is soft and compliments the flavor and taste of the fish. It's yummy on the tummy. My FAVORITE! Fries 5 STARS The fries were served hot. They were delicious and I enjoyed them. Chicken Wings 3 STARS The wings were fried nicely and came out hot. The wings were the perfect size. I dislike big steroid chicken wings. The seasoning was lacking for me though. Something was missing, but the hot sauce helped. Overall a great visit and I love supporting small businesses. I highly recommend visiting. I will be going back soon for the fish! I plan on trying a chicken sandwich too or some other sides. I left feeling, happy satisfied and FULL! read more

Service: Cory (owner) and his wife opened this location in Dec 2025. Cory was so friendly and passionate about his restaurant, and so were the rest of the staff. Everyone was so friendly and kind! You order at the counter and the staff will bring your food out to you once it is ready! The food is made to order so be patient. Food: The food was amazing! I had the 3 piece chicken meal and it was so delicious that I noticed myself picking at the bare bones at the end of my meal. The sweet tea and koolaid were great! Ambiance: The restaurant is a bit small, but still plenty of tables. read more

It's been a few weeks since I ate here and I'm still thinking about it. We stopped in since we saw some good reviews and I wail say, the Yelp community did not lead us astray. Cory (the owner) was awesome - he had recommendations and gave us some of the back story of the place. I got the spicy sandwich and man it was so good. Juicy, tender, everything you want with a chicken sandwich. I also got a biscuit on the side - which was fun, but nothing too special. The chicken was the star of the show. Also had to get some kool-aid, which hit the spot. They sell their tea and kool-aid by the jug as well for people who want some at home. The place is super clean and pleasant to sit and eat. Unfortunately we live a bit far from here but you better believe the next time we're in this vicinity we will be stopping here to eat. Go give this a try! read more

I grew up in the Deep South and know my fried chicken and collared greens. My son and I just happened onto Roots today for lunch and I will add this to my frequent lunch spots now. It's a little unassuming from the outside but that all changes as soon as you step in the door. We were greeted by the owner of the franchise, who is very friendly and explained all about the chicken here. I chose a combination of wings and three chicken strips with the macaroni and cheese as one side and red beans and rice is the other side. Nothing here is fast food and is cooked to order so he told us in advance. It would be 10 minutes. My son had the spicy chicken sandwich with collared greens as his side. wow!!!!!! it's hard for me to even describe the flavors, but they popped in my mouth. The chicken was incredible. Had a lot of taste and it was very juicy. Even the macaroni and red beans and rice were spot on perfection. My son let me try his greens and I could've taken it from him and polished it off. You have to give this place a try it's simply remarkable. read more

Food was good. Fries surprisingly outshined the chicken which was fine if not a bit rubbery. I didn't care for the West Indies Hot sauce that came with a high recommendation, but that is simply a personal presence. Service from gentleman behind counter was fantastic. He seemed to enjoy not only being there but making sure customers were greeted warmly and happy. Would be nice if they had more diet fountain drink options. I'm not even sure what "zero sugar Pepsi" is. Ambiance was fine for the type of place that it is. A 3.8% "fee" (which i assume is a credit card fee even though I'm not sure the kiosk ordering allowed to use cash) without mentioning it on the online menu is a "no no" and lost you a star and possibly any return visits. But then they do the same thing at their high end restaurants. As if folks are gonna carry in a wad of cash to pay for a $200+ restaurant bill. But if that's how they decide to operate a business, I guess it's their choice. And it's my choice to go to places who realize that's just a cost of doing business and should be factored into the food prices. read more

Visited this spot in Addison and got take out. It was nice and quaint. The dining area wasn't too busy but several people were picking up orders. I got the fried chicken wings and collard greens. They were nice enough to include 2 sides of greens. Love that. After getting to the car, I decided to go back in and get some of the kool aid I was eyeing. Hadn't had that in years, so why not? The manager had that "What's wrong" look when I walked back in. I put his mind at ease. No issues, just want some kool aid. I was skeptical about the greens but everything was good. I'll be back for sure. read more

If you love fried chicken this place has some of the best chicken in Dallas. Have always been a fan of the Legacy Hall location and I am so glad they now have a location in Addison. Last time I went I got the chicken strips, this time I got the chicken nuggets, and they were just as juicy, they were bigger than normal chicken nuggets. I usually dip them in ketchup or hot mustard something, but these were so good I didn't need any dipping sauce. The service was still great, as a big guy I usually finish my food but with an order of their fries and nuggets I wasn't able to finish it all and I regret it lol. read more

This is in response to owner Corey E's comment that Roots has "no record" of my visit. I'm curious what "record" he is referring to. Does Roots have special face recognition system that records every customer and then matches them to their Yelp reviews? If not, how exactly would Corey know whether I visited? ( I considered visiting again simply to save and post the receipt with this review but did not want to waste my money again). For the record, my wife and I did visit Roots, ate there and left a 3 star review based on my experience. Suggesting otherwise simply because my review was not glowing is disappointing and unprofessional. My criticism was straightforward : great fried chicken should have crisp exterior, and tender, juicy, flavorful meat. In my opinion, the chicken I had at Roots did not meet that standard. I've eaten at Bubba's Dallas, Hattie B's in Nashville and Yardbird in Washington D.C, and would readily give their fried chicken 4 or 5 stars. Roots, based on my visit, was not in the same league. That is my opinion. Other diners may disagree, which is precisely what Yelp is for. Readers can consider different reviews and make up their own minds. I initially gave 3 stars, choosing to ignore the fact that table was greasy and not thoroughly cleaned although there had only one other couple in the restaurant at the time. Unfortunately, the owner's response to less-than-enthusiastic review leaves an even poorer impression. read more

The customer service was exceptional, as soon as we walked in we were greeted with a smile. I ordered the chicken wings, fries, mac and cheese as well as collard greens. My chicken and fries were great. My hubby loved the chicken sandwich. I'd give the greens a 5/10 and the mac 5/10 as well. The collards had great flavor, just more pot liquor than greens. Also the mac was a little runny but decent. I will definitely be back! read more

My first order. I placed a pick up order and called because the online menu was confusing. Corey, the owner, was so friendly and helpful... took my order over the phone then sent a text with a link to pay as it is cook to order. I ordered the combo (4 wings, fries, tea). Listen, those duck fried wings and the sweet tea w/ginger were so good. I also got sides: collard greens, red beans & rice and mac n cheese. They're small in portion but taste was 10/10! The location is small inside with a few chairs if you wish to sit and eat... and very nice. I'll definitely be back. read more

The service was great and friendly. The staff explained the menu. The food was awesome. I wish I had tried it in the store because after I arrived home, I wanted to go right back. The food at this location is very good. I ordered the duck-fat fried wings. I was so happy they were not those gigantic wings like other places serve.I cannot eat those at all. They scare me . They were cooked to perfection, and definitely delicious . My friend ordered the chicken tenders, and they were just as appetizing as the wings. Hang on....i cannot leave out those amazing French Fries. I love good hand-cut French Fries that are simply seasoned . Don't forget to order a cup of Kool-Aid. It rounds out the meal. The Owner greeted us and took our order. He was very personable, and I appreciated it. The rest of the staff was just as welcoming and checked on us periodically. Good customer service is always an A+. The place is clean and relaxing, I'm a simple gal, so I'm impressed by the little things. I will definitely be back to try the catfish and banana pudding (made in house from scratch). Thanks for the warm welcome and awesome food! read more

I was on the look out for a catfish sandwich. I read the reviews on Roots and decided to make the drive for lunch. The catfish sandwich was hot, made to order and delicious. Nice sized filet and light, crispy cornmeal crust. The reason for four stars was the wings. Although good and flavorful, there was nothing special about them. I was certainly expecting more for the $8 price for three wings. Will definitely be back for the fish! read more

Discovered a new favorite today. Beyond the food, the hospitality here is next-level. The staff made me feel like a regular, and it was my first visit! Even the kitchen staff made eye contact, smiled and waved when I arrived! The restaurant is incredibly clean and organized, which was impressive. About the food: I ordered the nuggets and duck-fat fries, and both were still at a great temperature and crisp by the time I made it back to work. Their house-made sauces, specifically the West Indies hot sauce and ranch, are not to be slept on. The Caesar salad was appealing to the eyes and the palate: A perfect construction of finely shredded kale and romaine coated with a briny, authentic Caesar dressing. Seasoned bread crumbs layered the top, adding the perfect layer of crunch and texture that turns a good salad into a great one. The cherry on top was a friendly invitation to come back and dine in. Between the pristine space and the standout flavors, I am already planning my return. They won't have to ask me twice! read more

What a pleasant surprise! We were in search of a chicken fried steak sandwich and when we saw this on Yelp, we detoured for chicken and fries done in duck fat. We live about 30 minutes away. It was so worth the drive! First of all, the service was spectacular. Seriously, the nicest I have encountered in a restaurant in a long time. The space is clean and bright and was being maintained continuously. The pricing was very reasonable too. Heard this place had the best chicken, so I definitely had to try it for myself. Unfortunately, I left pretty disappointed--both with the service and the food. I ordered the 3 chicken strips with a side of collard greens and a Kool-Aid. Instead, I received 3 wings, no greens, and what tasted like sugar water with a hint of tropical punch. I let the young lady know I ordered strips, not wings, and that my collard greens were missing. She said "okay," so I went ahead and ate the wings. The wings themselves were pretty bland and really needed hot sauce or something--thankfully, they did at least offer that. After finishing the wings, I went back to remind her I was still missing the collard greens. She finally brought them out, and to my surprise, all the salt the wings were missing was packed into the greens. They were so salty I couldn't finish them. All in all, I'd give this place a 3 out of 10. read more

Some of the food items were good, like the red beans and rice and the fries. But the portion size was very small. The sauces were good. This one hurt my wallet and my taste buds. read more
