South Gourmet Kitchen - Food for the Soul Ciara and Deidra welcomed me to South Gourmet Kitchen like I was family they'd been saving a seat for. This isn't just southern hospitality it's the kind that makes you feel like you've stepped straight into your mama's kitchen, where love's in the seasoning and smiles are always on the menu. And the best part? This little slice of home just happens to be right here in Plano, Texas, ready to serve you with warmth, love, and a side of "you better eat!" 6509 W Park Blvd, Ste 420, Plano, TX 75093 #SouthGourmetKitchen #CollinCountySigmas #BlackBusinessMonth #SupportBlackBusiness #FoodForTheSoul

I have not been inside the restaurant so I can't speak to the ambiance. I spoke to the staff to place my order and she was pleasant and informative. The food is a no go for me. The catfish did not taste like catfish. The sweet potato juice was so thick and too much of cinnamon. The greens and Mac were just okay.

A friend wanted to try the new location in Dallas near the Galleria so I said sure. Upon arriving we were greeted with a warm hello and seated immediately. There was only one other table of people but it was before 6pm which is when I think it gets jumping. There was a DJ setting up for the evening so I'm sure it will be tons of fun. We were brought out a sample of the mini cornbread muffins with a sample of the house made whipped butter. It was very tasty and honestly reminded me of breakfast. But breakfast is good any time of the day so I'll take it. For drinks I went with water and my partner in crime ordered a strawberry lemonade. We went ahead and placed our entree orders as well. I went with the county bumpkin and added one fried chicken wing. He ordered a brisket grilled cheese and added bacon and jalepeños with greens for a side. The food took a little while to come out and I'm guessing it's because of the fried chicken wing. Nevertheless the food all looked great! I tried the chicken wing first and it was straight out the grease hot. It had great flavor and truly satisfied my palate. He raved and raved about his brisket grilled cheese and it looked so perfectly grilled and full of flavor. My dish came with meatloaf sitting on a bed of whipped potatoes and covered in a brown gravy. It looked like it had been sitting under a warming lamp but I was still willing to try it. As expected it was lukewarm at best but had great flavor. My entree selection also came with yams, mac n cheese, and yams. The sides were all very tasty. The greens had a slight spicy taste but was still very tasty. Overall the customer service was great and the food was enjoyable.

How lucky am I that I live right down the street from this place!!! Everything I had was full of flavor and seasoned perfectly! I got the Bama wings, with the macaroni! I tried the meatloaf mashed potatoes, egg roll and yams and cornbread! Oh and the fried green tomatoes! I also got a drink that I forgot the name but it was good as well! The waiter was very attentive and had many suggestions for food! The ambiance is an intimate place, dimmed lights. I would recommend making a reservation for the weekend, as they have a dj and hookah and could get crowded. Ask to make sure dj n hookah is available on that day, wasn't when I went yesterday. I would try everything I got again!!!!

Only pic i got but go try this place!!

On the fly we chose this place for brunch Sunday. Ambiance is fun, all vibes, but also diner'esk. We ordered wings and waffle, mac n cheese bowl w/brisket (no brisket but we subbed with chicken), peach cobbler pancakes, and the chicken and pancake drip. 4 stars for no brisket #sads but the food was so good! The chicken is perfection. Fried so flavorfull, yet moist, tender, airy like batter. The hot honey glaze is so bomb! Mac n cheese tastes of sharp cheddar but also creamy velveeta. The bellinis were yum and presented so pretty, with a flower. The pancakes though! Tastes like my momma made them at home with those buttery crisp edges you only get at home. The syrup is so delicious you could drink it. Not overly sweet, light, something special about it. I can't wait to try more items! Sparkles was so sweet and the other ladies rocked the service!!

Tried this spot for the first time today. I ordered the catfish with black-eyed peas, yams, and mac & cheese, plus an extra piece of catfish. I was really hoping for some good catfish, but unfortunately, it didn't hit the mark. As you can see in the photo, the fish wasn't cooked through and was falling out of the breading. The yams and mac were okay, but the real highlights were the black-eyed peas and cornbread. Overall, I was disappointed--fried catfish is hard to mess up, so this was surprising. Maybe it was just an off day, but for me, it's a one-and-done. ***Food was ordered from the Plano location***

The greens were good, the fish is being reheated and my yams were burnt. Service was slow and a little angry. The restaurant is small but neat, they have to do better.

I honestly pulled into the parking lot on the backside with the intent to support a competing restaurant through the drive-through. I saw the food truck for Southern Gourmet Kitchen and I immediately made a decision to support a Black owned business. I'm glad I did! I was greeted immediately when I came in by an incredibly friendly young woman. I told her it was my first time she gave me the QR code to scan and we started to talk about some of her favorite things. Today is Tuesday and this is week number three of their soul taco Tuesday so I took a chance. Excellent choices! I tried both the brisket and the catfish taco. The brisket was by far my favorite. The truth is the catfish is fire all by itself and it does not require the distraction of a tortilla shell, lettuce or tomato. It's probably some of the best catfish in this part of town! The tartar sauce was exceptional. I also tried a side of the macaroni and cheese. And all honesty it was not my favorite, but I can't wait to try some of the other wonderful sides. No question I'll be back. And I can't wait to tell others about it.

I have been to this restaurant several times and I have the same issue every time. Having visited on a weekday and a weekend, it is obnoxiously loud! Don't get me wrong, the food is very tasty and worth the price! The collard green egg rolls are very delicious and I want two orders of them every time. I just don't believe that the food outweighs the service and atmosphere. The first time we visited, there were speakers right behind our booth and it was so loud, we had to text each other. Thankfully, the restaurant upgraded their speakers, but we choose to sit outside due to the music blaring and the lack of ability to communicate with the guests adjacent to you. I communicated this issue with management and the response that I received was, "We have guests who visit and tell us to turn the music up." I'm a relatively young man, I don't mind loud environments, but there's a time and a place and this isn't it. It's a restaurant, not a club. We have heard multiple people leave the restaurant and make jokes about not being able to hear. Overall, the food is good but the atmosphere and service isn't up to par for me to return anytime soon.

Today was my first visit to Southern Gourmet. A friend and I went for R&B Bingo. It's a very cute vibe and liked the decor. The food was very good! We shared an order of the collard egg rolls. I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were. Bits of turkey and I think, maybe some cream cheese but not sure. It came with a dipping sauce but I didn't need it. We both ordered the catfish which was so delish! I ordered a side of fries and my friend had the mac and cheese which looked amazing. Ok so here's the bad part... the service was terrible - truly the worst I've seen in a long time. When we arrived, there was a number of people (patrons) standing around. No one was at the hostess stand. 10 mins in, a couple in front of us left. Eventually my friend stopped a server to ask about a hostess and inform her that we had a reservation. She told us that she would seat us after tables were cleaned off. 10 mins later, we were seated. Our server was friendly when she came around. She gave recommendations and cracked us up with her jokes and personality. She hardly ever checked on us and we didn't receive a couple of requested items (plates for the appetizer and water). The food also took close to an hour to come out. The menu mentioned to expect a minimum of 30 mins... but still. There were a couple of tables that sat after us who received food. I did wonder if she forgot to put in our order after awhile. Anyway, good food and atmosphere, but it's a one and done for me.

I am so glad I was introduced to this gem in Plano. There was a DJ that played great music, the food was delicious, and our server Shajuna was friendly (and fun to talk with). We started with the collard green egg rolls. Amazing! Melt in your mouth brisket, tangy perfectly seasoned greens, and, surprise, cream cheese went together perfectly. This was a portent of things to come! Everything was perfectly seasoned and delicious. I can recommend the fried catfish, cabbage, and fried okra also. Everything is made fresh to order. I highly recommend SGK (and Shajuna) if you're looking for down home meal and vibe.

While, I would come back just for the playlist, but, let's talk about the food. The menu boasts all the southern favorites you could crave, from creamy mac n cheese to sweet candied yams and crispy fried green tomatoes. There is truly something on the menu for everyone. While I wasn't a fan of the crab cakes, I cannot recommend the Southern egg rolls enough! They are crispy, well-seasoned, and served with the tangiest sauce. The wait staff adds to the experience; we had nothing but, polite and attentive service. They're always ready to assist with a smile, making you feel right at home. But, the wait for food is something serious -- expect upwards of at least an hour, even on a slow day/time. But again, I'd come back just for the playlist/experience.

    Is this restaurant kid-friendly?

During the week yes, I know on they have a DJ on weekend but I am unsure of the times. Those times it might be too loud for kids depending on their ages.

It was pretty packed when I came on a weekend, so I'd recommend reservations. The chicken and waffles were top notch. It was a pretty hefty portion for the price. Eric, our waiter, was incredibly attentive despite how busy he was. Empty plates were cleared and waters were refilled in a timely manner. WHAT WE ORDERED - chicken and waffle: I personally didn't order this, although this dish made it to the clean plate club - gulf shrimp and grits: this was beyonddd delicious and flavorful! The grits were so creamy and buttery. It came with a perfect amount of shrimp that were seasoned beautifully, had the perfect texture and bite, and had a nice touch of smokiness from the grill. The sauce and crunchy bacon bits truly brought the entire dish together to form the perfect bite - banana bread french toast: I was told this was alright - gumbo: We ordered 2 cups of these and had it as our appetizer. The gumbo had an abundant amount of chicken, sausage, rice, and the holy trinity. It truly tasted like authentic gumbo Coming from Southeast Texas where Creole food is more accessible, I am sooo glad my brother recommended this place. I am definitely coming back when I need my Creole fix!

This place is truly something special, from the gracious hospitality to the incredible menu. The menu delivers elevated Southern comfort food that somehow manages to feel both nostalgic and fresh at the same time. I've worked my way through almost the entire menu over multiple visits, and I can honestly say that everything is incredible. Every time I take someone new there, I tell them that there hasn't been one dish that I've ever thought "meh" about. Every dish is so flavorful and outstanding. That said, I absolutely have my go-to order: the cornbread (a must), the southern greens, and the fried chicken. The cornbread is almost like a melt in your mouth dessert, that I happily start every visit with. The greens are packed with rich, savory flavor, and I'm not kidding when I say that every time I have them, I literally dream about them for weeks after. And the duck fat fried chicken? Crispy, juicy, and hands-down some of the best I've ever had. Beyond the food, the whole experience just feels thoughtful, from the quality of ingredients to the execution of every dish. You can tell there's real intention behind everything coming out of the kitchen. If you're anywhere near Farmers Branch, this spot is worth going out of your way for. And if it's your first visit--trust me, get the cornbread, southern greens, and fried chicken. You'll be dreaming about it later.
