Jerk Chicken with rice and beans, and spinach
    Blessy S.

I had a craving for Jamaican food and this place hit the spot. We sat at the bar and ordered a suggested drink from the bartender (definitely could've been stronger). I ordered the curry goat with rice and beans and cabbage. The food was so flavorful and the meat fell off the bone kinda good (mouth is watering just thinking of it). My friend ordered the oxtails and it was also sooooo yummy. I only wish they served a larger portion because I ate that way too fast lol. The service was really good and our bartender/ server was very helpful and friendly. It is a fairly small spot in the corner of a shopping complex. But they packed a lot of flavor and vibes in that small place. definitely will come again! As I was posting this review I realized I door dashed from this place a while back and remembered it being delicious then too!

So so yum! 4.5 stars -- and the only reason it's not a full 5 is because the beef patties could've been a little crispier. Other than that, this place was incredible! My family and I stopped in after church on a Sunday, and I'm so glad we did. The service was super fast and friendly, and the decor really transported us -- it felt like we were enjoying a warm summer day in Jamaica. You could feel the vibes. The mango wings were absolutely delicious -- sweet, tangy, and full of flavor. The fried chicken was cooked perfectly and literally fell off the bone -- so juicy and well-seasoned! My husband loved the appetizers so much we ended up ordering two more to go. The mac and cheese was another hit -- rich, cheesy, and full of flavor. We were so satisfied with our meal we didn't even have room for dessert (though we're already planning to come back and try the bread pudding next time).

This is my second time visiting the island spot in Carrolton and they have been spot on both times. This time I got Mama Joyce's oxtails and they were falling off the bone tender. Our server was amazing at directing us on what she felt was good and her knowledge of the drink menu was great. Inside it's a very lowkey vibe exactly what you would expect from a Jamaican food spot. Great music, great vibes, and amazing food. If you're in the area or looking for some of the best Caribbean food in the DFW this is your spot.

If I was handed a piece of overdone, burnt chicken, I'd probably turn it away, but not here at The Island Spot. I ordered the jerk chicken meal for lunch. The chicken skin was grilled as black as it could be, and at first glance, you might think the meat would be tough and dry. But the opposite was true. The meat was tender, moist, and full of flavor. The charred skin added a signature smoky taste that made it even better. This was my first visit. The vibe is very down-to-earth, with lots of bamboo decorations, a wood-paneled bar, and concrete-look flooring. If you're around the area, come by and give it a try!

Now Island Spot....this mustttt be the diet patty because where is the rest of the filling?! I wanted to give you such a good rating because the coconut shrimp with the mango sauce slapped, but this patty is disappointing.

Had a friend visiting from out of state that likes Jamaican food, and we did have a lot of time, but again they did us right. We were greeted promptly and seated at the platform table (good window view) with good energy from hostess to server. We were given good recommendations on food and drinks and also advised of the preparation time. They took great care of us. Thanks again for doing right when I introduce new people to the spot

Craving oxtails and not minding a jerk spot, I chose this place, but I hate I came in 30mins prior to them closing because I'm sure it would've bn better if they weren't about to close. Anywho, my coworker and I dined in and we both ordered oxtails. We had the same sides of rice and peas, and cabbage. She ordered the plantains. It took our food abt 10 mins to come out. Everything was fresh, my oxtails weren't the hottest. My sides were hot. The taste was good. The restaurant was clean. We both ordered drinks. Our margaritas were good. I had watermelon. They had a decent kick. Our server was friendly. I'd return when I'm back in town!

    Jerk ribs...sooo good!

Coming from the east coast where there are many Jamaican restaurants, this Island Spot does not disappoint! I ordered beef patties, plantains, jerk chicken, jerk bbq, stew chicken, rice and peas and Cabbages. The truth is, the meats were a little salty but we're decently seasoned. The jerk bbq was INCREDIBLE! That was the best item that we ordered. Our server was kind and let us stay there until the restaurant closed at 10pm on a Friday night. We had a great time and enjoyed great music. You wouldn't think it's a busy place from the outside but it's a nice location and busy.

    Gummy beef patty
    Laura M.

$4.98 for one beef patty is insane. I hate to write badly about Caribbean restaurants but... They always struggle to make things right. As you can see in my photo of the beef patty, it's gummy, extremely oily and barely filled with any patty meat whatsoever... I've had real Jamaican patties in Jamaica along with American style and Trinidadian style, this is not it

You get a nice amount of food and that's quite impressive for an oxtail entree. Oxtails were tender but I wasn't a fan of the gravy. Service was fast and was a simple process to order takeout

So I've been wanting to try this spot for a while. My & my friend made a vow that we would try at least 2 new Restuarants every month. So The Island Spot was one of the places we picked for August. When I went I had a drink while I waited. I only drink brown so the host who was also the bartender made me an amazing drink. I had the Flaming Hurricane. For food I had the two meat plate with jerk and curry chicken with rice & peas and saffron rice. This food was soooooo delicious. This was my first time having Jamaican food and they did NOT disappoint. The service was amazing. The ambiance was very chill and relaxing. This food was so amazing we're going back another weekend. Def gotta get those jerk chicken nachos! Do yourself a favor and visit this place. Prices are great, service is great and food was amazing! PS.... I felt EVERY bit of that 1 drink! No weak drinks made! Double PS... I'm American not Jamaican. So what might be good or decent to me might not be to an actual Jamaican!

Does anyone know if oxtails have the same texture as goat meat?

Oxtails is actually a little more tender than goat meat. It is more fall off the bone texture. Hope that helps

I came to this restaurant a few months ago and had a 21 year rum. Can't remember exactly what kind. What are all the different kinds of 21 year rum this place offers. Maybe a screenshot of the drink menu? I remember it being in one of the rum flights

When we walked in, it was only people of color, so that indicator probably meant that i was in for a good authentic meal. We ended up getting coco bread, chicken stew and half jerk chicken with fries. The stew came with two side dishes, so we ended up getting rice&peas and collar greens. The jerk chicken only came with fries but it was only 13 bucks. you do have the option to get jerk chicken with two sides, but that would have been 19 dollars. The coco bread was really fully and if you dip it into the stew chicken, it takes it to another level. Both dishes were excellent and the kick on the jerk chicken was spicy but not too bad where you couldn't enjoy it. Service was great, and they were friendly. Located right behind the McDonalds. All in all, i'll come back if i'm in the area.

I was trying to save room for the main course, but there was something so delicious about those unassuming little bites. They were warm, slightly crisp, and completely addictive. We came specifically for the lunch specials, and they did not disappoint. I had my eye on the Piccadilly, a flavorful mix of ground meat with spices, potatoes, and what I believe were raisins and olives. It comes with white rice and black beans, but you can have them mixed together, which is absolutely the way to go. The combination of savory and slightly sweet flavors was fantastic. My only small wish is that it came with a few more sweet plantains on the side. My husband ordered the Cuban sandwich, which comes with a side. We chose fries and iced tea, and they generously brought us BOTH large iced teas. The sandwich itself was huge, easily big enough to take half home. It was perfectly grilled, warm, and melty. If I could change one thing, it would be to make the bread a bit smaller while keeping all that delicious filling. This place is also a great value. Definitely worth stopping by and checking out.

Trinilicious is Trinidad style cuisine which was my first time trying it. Sintra, who is also the owner, was working the lunch counter and was happy to point out what each dish was on the counter ready to serve. We ordered the curry goat and got rice and beans as the two sides amongst many other side options. This was probably the best thing we ordered as the goat was falling off the bone tender and the curry was not greasy or oily and complemented the goat perfectly. We also ordered the bake and salted fish which is salt fish inside a pocket sandwich that's almost like a pita bread but it was way more fluffy and buttery than pita. I love salted fish and this really hit the spot. I also ordered the doubles watch was a chickpea curry inside roti I think. It was so flavorful and Sintra recommended the spices to add to it based on my answers to a few questions about my spice preferences. For drinks we ordered Mauby tea and the beetroot with carrot juice. Mauby was explained to me as a type of tea from the bark of a tree amongst other spices. It was sweet but not overly sweet and I tasted fennel/anise which I love because it gives a licorice taste to it. Beetroot with carrot juice was also blended with other spices but was very fiber heavy from the carrot so it was close to a smoothie texture or blended veggie shake, however it was sweet and maybe had coconut milk in it or some regular milk. We preferred the Mauby. I can't wait to try other things on the menu. There was a fancy looking Mac n cheese and curried potatoes that looked amazing. There's also a couple more milky tea drinks and a hibiscus style tea to try. A few tips before you get there. Keep in mind it is a small restaurant and would probably be difficult to bring a group larger than 4 because of limited seating but they can probably combine tables if you call ahead. When we go on vacation we try as many spots as we can but if a place is good enough, sometimes we…read morego twice. This place is truly special. Very close to my foodie heart . First time ordered light to go: congri (cuban rice mixed with black beans) and patacones (smashed up double fried green plantains). My expectations were low. The congri was a religious experience. I've only had congri this good another time in my life and that was home cooked by a Cuban friend. This congri is better than anything in Miami. It's better than Versailles and it's probably the best congri in the world . I come from Ecuador and plaintain runs thru my veins. That I know of Cuba is not known for excellent patacones. But these were up there with the best I've ever had. And trust me that's high praise coming from an Ecuadorian. Second time we came we ate light at the restaurant: 2 cheese empanadas, a cuban coffee (that espresso thimble thing) and a mojito cocktail. The cuban coffee was the best I've ever had but I'm biased bc he put a little sugar in it and it was deep and perfect. My wife who is half Cuban likes it straight (no sugar). The mojito was good but it needs a little work. For the best mojito ever go to Miami's Cafe Versailles. The lovely waitress who waited on us was attentive and even offered to take a picture of us. Met the owner/chef and he shared some of his incredible life story. I'll respect his privacy but he had to go to epic lengths to achieve his American dream. We ordered $100 of food to go. The pork cuban tamal was infused with pork flavor to the max. The sanduche Cubano would be something that fit right in Miami. His Ropa Vieja is right on par with my wife's ropa vieja which I consider better than any I've had in ANY restaurant including Versailles and La Carreta. These guys are so lovely and authentic that I don't think they even speak English. But don't fret, bring your Google Translate and be treated to some of the best Cuban food anywhere. I really loved this place and I really love these guys. Like the owner said: "trato de dar lo mejor de mi" = I give the best of myself from the heart . That's my kind of place. Can't wait to go back

Worth the flight from NY to San Antonio then the 4.5 hour drive from San Antonio there! And yes! The reason for the trip WAS RJH! My friend and I went in Monday around 6:30pm. We were greeted immediately as we walked in and given the option of seating. It was pretty empty with the exception of one other person at the bar and some people coming in for takeout. It's a really big place and it's beautiful in here. LOVE the big Bob Marley/Jamaican flag mural in the back that's also visible from outside. The service was really good. Everything came out quickly and was hot and fresh! We also chatted it up with the owner Adrian who is amazing! Drinks: we went with the rum punch and stuck with it. We had 3-4 rounds and it def punched us at the end of the night! Lol it's the perfect balance of strong and tasty. Food: we started with the Escovitch and RJH Honey BBQ Jerk wings. The Escovitch was soo bomb! I'm not a fan of BBQ sauce but I did try those and will say it was a good balance and the BBQ sauce wasn't overpowering. For entrees we had the "tour of Jamaica" and the Escovitch whole red snapper. The tour of Jamaica is a great idea because it allows you to sample the oxtail, curry goat, and jerk chicken without having to purchase 3 different meals. It's also served with white rice or rice and peas, festival, and steamed cabbage. The oxtails were the star of the tour! It was perfectly seasoned and tender, and came right off the bone! The goat was really good too. I didn't try the jerk chicken. The snapper was my entree and the only thing that was left on my plate were the bones and the lime garnish! It was soo good! I ate the head and everything else! We fully enjoyed our food and dining experience. I will definitely be back and would definitely recommend RJH for any occasion. According to Sarah, this one won a Dallas award for best Cuban. - See photo. I have had more than a few Cuban sandwiches in my life, and this one is absolutely top tier. I found the spot on Yelp and we headed over right after a trip to the DMV. We definitely deserved a treat after that. We ordered two sandwiches to split, the shredded beef and the original Cuban. They offer several variations of Cubans..., including one with mortadella that I am already planning to try next time. There is also a display case full of beautiful baked treats made by Rita. After sandwiches at that level, there was no way we were leaving without dessert. The inside is authentic and charming, though the tables are a bit tight. I cannot wait to go back.

The ambiance is wonderful: cozy, quaint, and full of charm. The pastries themselves were just okay. They had a slightly stale taste, almost as if they'd been sitting out for a while. I imagine they're much better when fresh. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to try the Cuban sandwiches everyone raves about!
