We have been coming back and finding that our friends have already been doing the same. Remember to shake the sauce because all the garlic is on the bottom. I wish they gave more of the side cabbage, though I think you can ask for more? I liked it! The funny thing Is that I've passed by this place so many times when I lived there about 8 years ago, so it was kind of nostalgic at the same time too. We came here with my fiancée friend who recommended this place for some good Taiwanese fare. As I've bitched so many times in the past, SF Bay Area Asian food is so damn expensive vs LA Asian food. Case in point: my mushroom and fatty pork belly rice bowl cost a mere $5.50. It had about a cup and a half of rice, a generous portion of the topping and a whole soy marinated egg. Comparably speaking, something like this would be at least $2.00 more as we recently saw on our visit to Taiwan Bento in Oakland. Anyways we ordered a few more dishes including a fried tofu dish that I didn't eat as well as pork chop rice. I can only speak to my rice bowl which was truly excellent in flavor. Very savory, a hint of sweetness from the sauce, and good texture from the fatty pork belly and mushrooms. The atmosphere and decorations I would consider as bright and lively. Lots of colors and wood tables. It looked well put together for a small shop. Service was very attentive too. I'd definitely come back esp if I lived in the area again. This place is truly mediocre. I came having read a positive review online, thinking that if this place has been in business for as long as it has, it must be pretty good. We ordered a minced pork rice (lu rou fan), stinky tofu, and dandan noodle. Of the three, only the pork rice was serviceable. The meat quality was decent, but I found it too sweet at the end of the day. The stinky tofu was really not great (you'd have better luck at Doe Jon Station or Golden Leaf). But the real kicker was the dandan noodle. It was amazingly bad. Nothing redeeming about it. The noodles were so limp they basically fell apart in my mouth. Smells like stinky tofu! A small little mom and pop restaurant that serves some delicious Taiwanese small plates. I say "small" because the portion sizes are actually pretty conservative. The prices are a bit steep too for the amount of food, but the experience for me brought back memories of Taiwan. Make sure you bring cash since they do not accept credit cards. If I were to return, I would probably only order the stinky tofu. It is indeed the signature dish at the restaurant, even if the signage reads Chans Paris M. The tofu is very spongy and hollow on the inside and very very crisp on the outside. It is only faintly stinky, which is fine by me because I have only had exposure to American stinky tofu and perhaps would not be equipped to handle authentic Asian stinky tofu. Each dish comes with 3 squares of tofu, cut into 4 triangles, served with a sweet soy dipping sauce, and fermented cabbage. It really liked the crispy shell and the flavors of the soy and sauce. Half through eating it, make sure you dig the rest of the pieces out of the dish so they don't become waterlogged with sauce. The rest of the dishes were really uninspiring. The Mushroom Sliced Pork Rice was a very small bowl but incredibly fatty. That is the way the dish is intended but even the rice was so greasy. The beef noodle soup was average. Here's the breakdown from my mom and I: STINKY TOFU: Love the subtle pungent fermented taste of their tofu, I like how it sneaks up on your taste buds instead of being outright dank. Stinky tofu is not meant to always smell uber "stinky" but it's all about the TASTE, not the smell. You don't eat with your nose, you eat with your mouth! What's also amazing is that they use FRESH oil to fry their tofu, trust me---it makes a difference! The outside skin is crisp and doesn't reek like other places that make it in SGV. Hello my Yelpies, So my friend and I was around the area for one of my Open Houses and decided to just stop by somewhere near to have a quick bite before heading home. I was definitely craving for some Taiwanese food so we thought why not just yelp something and this is how we discovered this super authentic Taiwanese food. Parking here is very convenient, there's many parking spaces right in front since it is located inside a plaza. The place was very cute, it definitely have a strong scent of Stinky Tofu so if you can't stand the smell then this might be a problem. But for me personally I think it smells delicious. We decided to order something quick and small, so we both got the minced pork with rice and a side order of tofu. The minced pork was delicious, the meat was very well marinated it had the perfect balance of salty and sweet. I just kind of wish they give a little bit more meat to balance with the portion of rice. As for the tofu it melt right in my mouth, I can definitely say this place is on the authentic side. If you are interested in authentic Taiwanese food this is for sure the place for you. Everything came out to less than $20, and filled you up pretty well. Without a doubt I will come back again in the near future to try something different. Tofu King, the supposed "King" of Taiwanese stinky tofu. However, I thought their stinky tofu wasn't very stinky nor strong tasting. Now, I haven't been to Taiwan to have stinky tofu, but somehow I have this feeling they toned it down. The restaurant itself didn't even smell stinky to me. I was hoping for the real, authentic stinky tofu here. Each order of stinky tofu came with 3 large squares of crispy tofu, partially cut, doused in some kind of soy sauce based sauce, and served alongside pickled cabbage and red chili paste. I liked my tofu with lots of sauce, so I dipped it further into the sauce plus I slathered on some chili paste for heat. It tasted decent, but again, not stinky enough. I had a hard time finding the restaurant. I got confused by the previous restaurant name, Chans Paris, that is still overhead on the storefront. Don't get fooled like I did and pass it! It is at 713 address, which is a very small shopping center near the corner of Duarte and Baldwin, facing the backside of Burlington Coat Factory and adjacent to the USPS office. Our hero noticed a girl whose parents obviously forced her to come holding her nose with one hand. It's definitely not a place for those who have sensitive noses. The $5 stinky tofu platter here is their signature dish. Three large pieces of deep fried fermented tofu with sweet chili sauce and sauerkraut-like Taiwanese pickled cabbage on the side is served on a boat shaped platter for people's viewing (but not smelling) pleasure. The LA Times food critic, C. Thi Nguyen, did a critique of Tofu King in November of 2011, and it provoked a curiosity about eating Taiwanese style stinky tofu. The original stinky was supposed to be left soaking in a mixture of fermenting vegetables for a week, but Johnson, the son of the owner, told me that the health department stipulated that the tofu be left for only 3 days so the original Taiwan style is compromised. However, for those who have a sensitive nose as well as stomach even a 3 day soaking will be more than enough. The smell and taste of this tofu will remind some people of an open sewer, diapers left in the pail for a few days, old, worn sweaty gym clothes left for a week, etc. I can imagine the traditional stinky tofu left for a week in the fermenting vegetables. However, there are other great foods that have a strong funky odor such as Natto-, Limburger, old Kimchi, Roquefort, Gorgonzola, etc. so stinky tofu may be another acquired taste which to some hints of greatness. "Chacun a son gout." The Stinky tofu is fried which is a blessing since the fried oil seems to modulate the stinkiness somewhat, and the crispness of the batter adds an interest independent of the pervading aroma. 3 slices of tofu are cut into 4 triangular pieces in a soy-vinegar sauce with fermented cabbage that is reminiscent of kimchi. Johnson was most cordial and wanted to walk me through ordering and giving me pertinent information and background about the stinky tofu. Ain't Los Angeles wonderful? So many unusual and rare things to eat if you only know where to look. Since this eatery has only a few tables, it would be best to go just when it opens so you can be served right away. By the way, the stylized faux French/Parisian decor on the walls from a previous restaurant incarnation makes for an interesting contrast to this signature dish. read more

Location: its located in a small parking lot next to duke's bakery, and hinotori izakaya/yakitori joint. the parking seems narrow and packed, so if you drive a suv, may god have pity on you. The way they introduce their dishes or give their recommendation on what dish to try felt homey. I do not know how they will interact with english speaking crowd, since it always hard to say chinese words to english literally. The restaurant is not some well cleaned place, but it has a nice street food feel to the place, you won't find no hipster or health nut in here. Mushroom slice pork rice (Lu ruo fan)- mmm, their pork rice tastes like the Chinese mushroom pork tamales. Quite flavorful but very small portion. Came with marinated egg. Stinky tofu- ordered both the big & mini pieces. My aunt ordered the big one since she had it make it vegetarian version (veggie soy sauce, no garlic) My grandma & I shared the mini ones. If I had an Asian family, it would be the family that runs this place. It's just a simple casual café, but the service is really sincere and warm. "Would you like a fork or chopsticks?" My friend wanted to go to Tofu King, so here we are. Now, I'm not a huge fan of, although their well-known, stinky tofu, nor am I a huge fan of pork, I thought I'd be a good sport and just try the different dishes my friends ordered. We ordered the famous stinky tofu in spicy numbing sauce and the famous stewed pork rice, along with some other items. Surprisingly the stewed pork rice was really good and tasty, although I'm not sure if I would order the item myself. Although I liked the spicy sauce in the stinky tofu dish (since I love spicy foods), I can't say I enjoy that as much. The server who took our order was very nice and very polite. He did forget to bring us our waters at one point but other than that, he was very nice and hospitable. However, after we finished our meal (thank goodness), I saw, and heard, him clipping his nails at the cashier counter. Ewwwwwwww! Well, at least I know the food's good. read more

Ok. So, if you translate their Chinese directly into English the joint is really called "Stinky Tofu King". My guess is that they chose Tofu King because they knew Guai Lo's wouldn't like the name much. Their signature dish is chou dou fu (fermented tofu) which was pretty tasty. I also had zhu xue gao (pork blood cake) which was a true treat. This is the first time I ever managed to find this dish outside of Taiwan. Not the best zhu xue gao ive ever had... but beggars can't be choosers. The Chao shou (wantons in hot oil) was very good. Ok.. really good. Sausage rice was good-fair. Didn't blow me away. Loved the homemade sour plum juice. Overall, a nice little eatery. Very reasonable price wise. I'll be back for sure. read more
