This place is small and simple. The food is quite Taiwanese traditionally, but the taste is definitely missing some flavor. I ordered multiple items from the menu and found that most of them have no taste. I have to admit the texture of the noodle and dumpling is made really well, but the soup and meat lacks the intensive spices. Stinky goodness finally comes with a sit down setting that's not plastic lawn chairs! Tofu King still looks a bit run down and ahem, ghetto, considering the sign out front is for the previous restaurant and the only way you'll tell it's Tofu King is by the giant banner hanging in front. But oh well, street food was meant to be eaten on the streets! Prices and menu is pretty identical to the Rowland Heights location and they have their delicious hot chili sauce for generous lathering on, well, everything. Mushroom pork on rice was on the sweeter side and I wish it was a bit more salty and fatty. However it does comes in a medium sized bowl, perfect to eat with your three large pieces of STINKALICIOUS tofu as well as its friendly side of perserved veggies. The soup noodles are a good basic as was pretty much everything else we got. The best and number one reason to come to this un-air conditioned location is still that delicious stinky tofu though. Not bad, Tofu King. But for a Tofu King, I expected some STANKY tofu!! The tofu didn't really stink. It was alright, but I liked the sauce and tofu at MJ Cafe better. I came in here knowing exactly what I wanted: stanky tofu, ground pork rice, and Tong Tzai Mi Gao (glutinous rice cake). My boyfriend and I took a look at the menu for two seconds and were ready. We ordered the bite size stinky tofu, but apparently the guy told us that's not what we want. We want the "Taiwan Style Stinky Tofu". We thought they would be the same just bite sized, but we were wrong. Then, we went onto ordering the pork stew rice. The guy then told us that's not what we wanted either. We want the "Mushroom Ground Pork Rice with Soy Sauce Egg". No wonder we missed it. We didn't even bother to read the whole menu because the names are so long at the bottom. Nevertheless, when the food came, it was exactly what we wanted. How the guy knew what we wanted is a freaking mystery, but I'm glad his psychic skills paid off. The ground pork rice was delicious. They advertise they don't use MSG, but who really knows. I knew it tasted good, and I wasn't as thirsty as a rhino afterwards. My other complaint with the food is that although their Tong Tzai Mi Gao had perfect flavor, it was microwaved! I guess I wasn't surprised, but it was the last thing that came out, and for 15 minutes, they could have steamed it since it was such a small dish! The first bite almost burned my tongue it was piping hot. Then the bottom got really hard and the rice wouldn't break apart. It was like dried glue. CASH ONLY Food here is really great! Pretty authentic and I really enjoyed the options they have. Pricing wise, not cheap, but acceptable for dinner. Recommend: Stinky tofu, braised pork rice with mushrooms, pork chop with rice. They also have some very traditional Taiwanese drinks offered in the store. The ambience of the restaurant is very meh, and I'm ehh about the fact that there's just a random fan in the middle of the store blowing the place. I won't recommend this restaurant at all. Their customer service is horrible. We went in there with 9 adults and 5 kids. The boss said they can only gave us 2 small tables. I said how about we split and fit into 4 small tables. And he just told me you can go somewhere else I need to reserve my table for other customers??? Seriously??? So we are with large group do not consider as customers to him? I strongly suggest if you have large group, do not waste your time to go there. They do not want your business!! Moving to socal definitely raised my bar high, I would give a 5 if it were in nocal because most Taiwanese dishes were not handled by Taiwanese. I did see the Korean style kimichi for stinky tofu in the picture but I still wanted to try. Sorry I wouldn't recommend because of the kimichi and soggy tofu (not a factor to my rating due to takeout only). Mr. Kuso is way better and taiwanese sour cabbage is served. The hype of discussion makes me want to compare. Also got the pork feet rice and it was definitely cooked to perfection, unfortunately, garlic soy sauce was not provided or offered, I would probably try asking next time, but the name of this dish indicates the authentic Pingtung Wuanluan pig feet, so I had to make it a given standard. Taiwanese fare all the way. The owners are really down to earth folks that reminds me night market family making a living in TW. Tables are kinda sticky all the time, and the restaurant is always overly warm, the owners will turn up the fan instead of AC at times, making it humid from time to time. lol Sticky tofu bites are good, rice and noodles are not exceptional but really reminds you of taiwanese street vendors. Food temps are often only warm for rice dishes, especially the braised minced pork rice. Turn up your heat well a bit higher! Since it is full of fat, it won't burn on ya, I promise. HA! Price is a bit high for what it is, and the whole presentation piece ain't really there. So this is your neighborhood joint that are only know to the locals, won't attract people outside of town. I still don't really know how to determine what is considered good Taiwanese food or bad Taiwanese food yet, because I have not had as much exposure to it compared to other types of Asian foods. Nonetheless, I was very pleased with my experience here. I came mostly because I wanted to try the stinky tofu. Since coming to the U.S. more than two decades ago, I have never had stinky tofu, and when I was little, I was horrified at the thought of eating something so putrid, so up until visiting Golden Leaf, I had never tried it. It tasted pretty good. I can't say it's my favorite thing to it, and it definitely is an acquired taste. But I definitely ate a couple of pieces since my friends and I were all sharing. We also ordered the beef noodle soup and onion pancakes, two of my favorites. Everything tasted really good, and the service was very friendly too. read more

If you love stinky Tofu 臭豆腐 prepare to be frustrated. Even with a name like Tofu King (臭豆腐大王）you may or may not get it. I've tried going here from out of town over the past 5 years and was "allowed" to have it only 2 times. I'll say their stinky tofu was acceptable but not the best. However, the owner's attitude is not acceptable. There are many times they just do not have the stinky Tofu. In our recent visit at 11:30 am, the owner only allows 1 order of stinky tofu per family. I only got the stinky tofu. BUT DAYUM! It's almost like I'm back in Taiwan. Needs to be slightly more stinky/flavorful, and I wish there was more minced garlic. That's the only thing I would change. More garlic, mmm. This is seriously as good as it gets in the States. For awhile, I had given up on finding good stinky tofu places in America because they were never stinky nor good. But my mom insisted that I try Tofu King, and I honestly thought I was back in Taiwan. It was really really good. Being a fellow Taiwanese, all I can say is, this place truly exceeds my expectations of typical minced pork rice available at the night markets in Taiwan. That's saying a lot. I love how they don't use grounded pork meat, in fact it's actual small chunks of marinated sliced pork with pieces of fat - sounds gross, but it's amazing. The meatball soup & spicy wontons are also good. Plus, the infamous stinky tofu of course. But my #1 would have to be the minced pork rice which still remains to this day. The only downside is the ambiance - it may be especially hard to find and the interior is a bit claustrophobic. It's also not that clean, so i would recommend getting the food to-go. read more

Why can't I find an outstanding Taiwanese restaurant? One that when my non-Taiwanese friends want to try Taiwanese food, I can let a smile creep over my face and declare, "Have I got a treat for you!" Tofu King is purportedly the place to go for stinky tofu, but maybe that's only for the Rowland Heights branch. The stinky tofu here wasn't very stinky at all! And not very tender. Very disappoint. The wontons in chili oil and "rou yuan" were just okay. (I like the chili oil wontons at Din Tai Fung and Mama Lu's better) The pork stew rice was just okay. The mushroom sliced pork rice w/ soy sauce egg was just okay. The chicken thigh rice was just okay. (Although in a new twist, the chicken wasn't fried for once. The minced meat rice is the best!! Even more flavorful than lu rou fan that I've had in Taiwan. It's so cheap, just a little over $3!!! When you eat it, you HAVE to mix the pickled mustard greens in with the rest of the rice and meat. It's just such a great flavor combination. BUT do not eat at the restaurant!! Just get it to go. This restaurant probably has the best stinky tofu I've had in the SGV area. The way they make it, however, isn't actually that stinky. It's perfectly crispy on the outside and the sauces and pickled vegetables were great! I also love their Wua Quei because they're hard to find in Taiwanese restaurants in the area. I recommend trying their sour plum drink because it'll be a great addition to your meal! The only dish my family and I did not enjoy the last time we visited was their Taiwan style rice cake. I was excited to go here because I no longer had to drive to Rowland Heights for my Tofu King fix! I haven't been to Tofu King in a long time, and realized after this experience that the stinky tofu is not very stinky anymore :( We asked the owner and they said they have changed the fermentation process from one week to just 2-3 days now. It's no wonder the odor has decreased and I am not as impressed anymore. As for the other food we ordered, the beef stew noodle with tendon was incredibly yummy! The tendon pieces just melted in my mouth. The soup was rich and the noodles were perfectly cooked with large pieces of fresh bok choy and preserved veggies. The lu rou fan (pork stew rice) looked pretty good, but I didn't get a taste. The ba wan (meatball) was decent, but I've definitely had better. Finishing off my meal with sour plum juice was very refreshing. I probably would make a return visit, but probably not as likely as I would've thought initially. read more

Apparently, this place opened on October 1st, 2011. Yet the sign outside says it's still the previous business. Since it's the new year, don't you think it's a good time to update things? The first thing I see in the restaurant is Cash Only. What a turn off. Seriously, I hate it when places are Cash Only. But whatever. There is nothing spectacular about this place, all of the portions are pretty small, and a lot of the dishes are cooked with extra soy sauce. The one good thing about this place is their 'Wa Guei', a rice paste with minced meat and garlic soy sauce dressed on top. Their 'Rou Gen Fan' is probably their best valued item in that they give you a huge bowl of it. If you like Black Vinegar, then it's a dish for you because the cook seems to go happy with the stuff on this dish. The workers here are all very nice, but they're not the brightest crayons in the box. Being located in a strip mall on the northwest corner of the Duarte/Baldwin intersection, there's plenty of parking for the size of this food spot. Their Stinky Tofu was passable to me, but nothing amazing. I was told that theirs is most authentic and accurate to that of Taiwan's, but when I had it, it seemed like the dime-a-dozen stuff I can get elsewhere. One look at their menu, you'll see that the items are all very affordable, most items being $5 or less. Then you see what they serve you and notice that all of the bowls are pretty small and the serving sizes aren't too large. Pro about this? You can order more items and try a wider variety of foods. Con? You don't get much bang for your buck. Will I be back? Sure, if I run out of other 'usual places' to go to for dinner. Decent, but nothing to die for. read more

We may have overwhelmed their staff a bit (9 people in our group RIGHT when they opened). They're still relativity new to this location so service can be a bit slow, but the food is amazing (my mom and aunties know Taiwanese food and they approve)! Must haves: Stinky Tofu, Beef Noodle Soup, Mi Gao (sticky rice). On to the details! Stinky Tofu - not stinky enough!! but perfectly crispy with a side of their pao cai (pickled cabbage). Mi Gao (taiwanese sticky rice) - it was a bit over sauced which made it soupy midway through. Could have used a bit more cilantro but the flavor was there. Zhu Xue Gao (pig blood rice cake) - chewy and topped off with just the right amount of peanut powder, cilantro, and sauce. For those of you who are curious, it doesn't taste like anything other than rice with peanut powder and cilantro. Ba Wan (meat ball wrapped in a translucent mochi-like dough topped with a sweet/savory red sauce) - there was nothing i didn't like about this. The meatball was soft and the outer dough was chewy just like it should be. Niu Rou Mian (beef noodle soup) - my mom and aunts likened this to one that they had when they were little at a small shop near where they lived in Taiwan. The noodles were thick and chewy, the broth had a wonderful aroma, and the quality of the beef was really good!! (we had them mix in some of the cartilage pieces too - melt in your mouth yumminess!) Yu Wan Tang (taiwanese fish ball soup) - the fish ball is stuff with a little bit of meat. the broth was clear and they added some glass noodles at our request. good for a cold/rainy day Xiang Chang (taiwanese sausage with ground garlic) - their sausage was FAR tastier than the one at SinBaLa. I used to live in a rural town in Taiwan known for their stinky tofu and this is the best I've yet to have in the States. Yeah, I know it's not quite stanky enough to be called "king" but it might be considered...Tofu Knight?? Tofu Knight definitely has come to the rescue of my stinky tofu-deprived self and is my hero for trying. Plus, the health department is to blame for the toned down stankiness; the proprietors explained that the health department made them reduce it. Pffffffft, health. My stinky tofu was washed down with wintermelon tea which I also loved. When we arrived in the parking lot and started walking towards this restaurant, I was wondering... "Where's the stinky tofu smell? Is this the place??" Stinky tofu is written in 3 large chinese characters outside on their window. As we stepped in, we STILL can't smell the stinky tofu. But we went ahead and ordered anyways. As the dish came, it STILL didn't smell! O_O As we digged in and soaked up the sauce and put it into our mouths... IT TASTE LIKE STINKY TOFU!!!!! Very delicious. For those of you who can't stand the stinky tofu smell but would love to try it, this is the place to go.
