After trying this place I'm not surprised in the slightest that they have a 5 star rating (a rare feat). Holy cow their bread was good. The white sour was perfect for roasting with butter, making paninis, and even morning French toast. Then there's the cookies, which themselves could be confused with loaves of bread they're so huge. I had the chocolate chip and the pbj. Crisp on the outside, gooey inside, amazing flavor. We also tried a burridough, which was certainly a clever name and delicious breakfast, though not as out of the park compared to the cookies. The cookies are a MUST. During a weekend getaway to Austin, I almost missed out on Throughbread and am so glad that I didn't. Full disclosure, didn't have room for the bread so this only relates to their ginger cookie. For my ginger cookie fans out there, Throughbread sees and hears you! Their gingerbread cookie has actual perfectly sized chunks of caramelized ginger. "Hole in the wall" without the normally amazing attribute of being great. The white sourdough pretty much tasted like white bread. It was dense and just good and for $10, I expected better. I specifically ventured out for bread, but saw this bakery had other items so I picked up a scone (blueberry, lemon, rosemary), a German chocolate chip cookie and what passes as a kolache. The rosemary in the scone was overpowering and the scone was too sweet--not a balanced treat...no one at home took more than a bite. The German chocolate chip is a great concept, but again the coconut in the cookie is overpowering--pretty much all you taste. No one finished the cookie--which is unheard of at our house. The Bottom Line: ThoroughBread was an absolute surprise find while during errands in Zilker. Here you can find carbs re-imagined in delicious ways. I was doing laundry at the laundromat next door, while waiting for the cycle to finish I walked around and noticed the storefront and walked in for a snack. The storefront was tiny but the smells were huge. The scents of freshly baked bread hit me like wall. I snagged the last of their Burridoughs™ they had baked for the day and it was the best fake burrito I've ever had. The PB&J cookie took me back to my childhood with a well done peanut butter cookie filled with sweet jelly. Here's a tip: If you ever find yourself on Bluebonnet Ln to do laundry, come hungry, skip the convenience store and head right to ThoroughBread for enough carbs to put you in a coma while the clothes dry. read more

I dragged my boyfriend here this AM for "coffee", but it was really for a breakfast cookie if I'm being honest with myself. On the coffee note, they do offer drip coffee and cold brew (drip was good!), but no fancy lattes/espresso - just to level set. The food: -burridough (avo/egg): 7/10, pretty tasty -cookie (pb Nutella): 8.5/10, loved it -cookie (chocolate chip): 7.5/10, above average My boyfriend got the burridough, and kept laughing about the name because he's a loser. There was much more filling than I had anticipated, which was surprising and tasty. The COOKIES. I wanted to see if these lived up to the hype - and they sure did. It's worth noting that I heated them up in the oven for 10min, which (I assume) greatly improved my experience as they were warm and gooey. The banana Nutella had much more banana flavor vs what I thought would come through - which I loved. The chocolate chip was good, but nothing too special about it. I will say it was much more dough-y vs a levain type, chip-heavy cookie which I actually prefer. As others have noted, you can also buy day old cookies for $2. The bakery is tucked inside the Barton Hills neighborhood and really has a neighborly feel. Small space, so there was a sign outside that said mentioned one group at a time indoors (COVID protocols). I ordered a Chocolate Chip Pecan Cookie, two Burridoughs (avocado, egg, cheese), and a Coffee. I love coffee, but don't regularly drink it since it triggers my acid reflux coughs (a big no-no in the COVID era). The cookie was great, however, in all respects. A thicker mound shape, rather than the thin cookies you're used to seeing, but it really lends to getting the crisp on the outside, but the soft doughiness on the inside - 10/10 would recommend. The Burridough is also great as well, and they brand it as a mix between a breakfast taco and a kolache - I'd say it resembles a kolache more so. Don't make the same mistake I did and decline salsa with it, the inside was packed with eggs so salsa of some form makes a big difference. I had salsa at home so I made up for it, and it was still delicious anyhow. I only ended up eating one and saving the other for later. A note that this Burridough is definitely more filling than either a kolache or a breakfast taco. In the end, I'd say ThoroughBread is going to be one of my new top recommendation options! read more

The friendly self-taught baker Ryan definitely earned a cult following almost instantaneously with the opening of this artisan bread shop. His loaves and sourdoughs are consistently sold out early in the day. I arrived at noon, and the only thing they had left were cookies. For bread, it would be good to order it a day in advance or to arrive early. I've seen sourdoughs in other places, and I've seen loaves in other places. But I've rarely, if ever, seen a whole wheat sourdough. And there are special offerings which you may need to check on Facebook for details (or call). A lot of the breads are around $7, reasonable comparing to supermarket competition. So I came, no bread - but $4 cookies, which I wasn't going to get until someone mentioned pecan chocolate chip and that it was warm. So I caved in - and these cookies are two-thumbs thick! Crusty on the outside and oozy in the middle - definitely rich and good. For the cookie monsters in Austin, this would be a great find. read more

My favorite is the whole wheat sourdough, but the white and rye are delicious, too. They do make traditional white and wheat, but i just can't get past the sourdough. The loaves are really large (for a single lady), but it takes French toast to a new level and whatever's left makes bread crumbs that i store in the freezer. WHAT KIND OF PASTRY SORCERY IS HAPPENING HERE? Cold brews tasted a bit off but were fine. We bought our brother a loaf of bread to bring back to Houston and one of us got a t-shirt she's so in love with this place. Service was still slow, but a bit friendlier this time around. Only thing is: you need to get some plastic or disposable knives. Firstly, I love that this is a family affair! It's a small but mighty operation pumping out loaves of bread AND swoon-worthy cookies. Bread: My olive loaf cost $9, which is hefty, but so is the loaf. And, to top it off, they had a few day old loaves that weren't sellable (but definitely edible), so they threw in one of those, so technically, I got two loaves for $9. I'm not a sourdough girl, but their sourdough had my eyes popping out of my head at a recent event, so definitely try a piece of that before naysaying it if you're a fellow sourno, like me. I'm loving the olive bread. It's great as a stand alone with just a little butter or spread of some kind (leftover chipotle pecan pesto from Bouldin Creek Cafe, let's say), but also a great base for my egg sandwiches in the morning. Cookies: Ooooooooh child. Their most notable one is the banana Nutella and if you like either of those things, you'll be head over banana peels for that. A surprise one for me was the PB&J. I think most peanut butter cookies fall short, but this actually had PB in it (it wasn't just the cookie dough) so when you pulled it apart, it was a medley of PB&J, much like a sandwich can be. These are the same look, girth, and dough-y interior as some other local faves like Henbit and Teddy V's vs the pan banged/flat cookies like at Sour Duck. Their tip jar is donated to a different charity every week or month, so when you are tipping them because of their warmth and friendliness, you're really giving back to a nonprofit that is near and dear to them. read more

It's no secret that I love bread and this bakery is going to easily become my go to. How I failed to come here for so long is beyond a mystery to me. ThoroughBread has large huking loaves of artisan bread, especially sourdough that has great aeration, chew and that dark mahogany crust that is a signature of good bread. But besides just the carbs, they also got killer cookies. They are reminiscent of the Levain style of cookies (i.e. hulking fist size cookies) that are not too sweet, have some slight doughiness to them and a potent crisp edge. My favorite is the pb&j and that's coming from someone who does not like peanut butter (unless in large quantities) generally speaking, but even I have to admit it was really good. Strong peanut butter flavor that you don't normally find in peanut butter cookies filled with jelly that brings the childhood throwback memories that isn't too sweet. The banana nutella is also good - it has the taste of chocolate banana bread honestly with the texture of a cookie. Oh and if you come early in the morning, they also sell discounted day old cookies that can easily be revitalized in the microwave for a few seconds. #steal Lastly, if you're in the mood for a hearty breakfast/brunch, I would definitely recommend the burridoughs. It's basically a thin pastry kolache with some cheese crust and stuffed to the brim. You know how most kolaches are mostly dough and a little filling? Flip that here - it's stuffed with eggs and if you're coming on a weekend, Terry Black's brisket. Ya, a little salsa to pair with that and you're in for a treat. It's definitely a hefty breakfast but it's the perfect way to start your morning. It's also pretty affordable as it doesn't cost any more than say, two breakfast tacos elsewhere (or two or three small kolaches). read more
