We really wanted to give this place five stars. The food was very good (We had the burger & lobster ravioli- delicious!) Lisa, our waitress, was extremely nice, helpful, and funny. We really enjoyed dining in her section. A large part of a dining experience, however, includes the ambience and overall experience. The problem here is the extremely loud country music that bombarded the outdoor dining area. There are large speakers in all corners of the dining area, so there really is no relief from it, and it was very loud. This didn't seem appropriate for this restaurant and winery. It is such a serene setting with the views and the property, but we couldn't get out of there fast enough. Thornton Winery- please consider changing your music to be a little bit more appropriate for the winery experience and for the general public. This music and volume are appropriate for other settings, like a bar maybe but not here. We come to Temecula a few times year, and we were very excited to have a new place to dine and enjoy wine, but unfortunately the excellent food and outstanding service (Thanks, Lisa!) are not enough to bring us back if this situation continues. read more

In my opinion, the worst winery in Temecula, hands down, which is probably why they never seem to have many customers. The customer service is horrible. Large parties of minorities seem to have the worst experiences, based on what I've encountered, and what I've heard from a few other families who I've spoken with, regarding their experiences with Thornton. Their membership appears very deceitful. They advertise perks that are not actually perks, after they charge an inflated gratuity. My family and I visited for the last time a few weeks ago. They left the plastic from the cheese on my son's $35 cheeseburger, and when we told the waitress, she did not offer to have the kitchen remake it. The food was nasty and flavorless. They charged my daughter almost $30 for a shrimp salad, with four small raw shrimp on it. Additionally, they gave me two bills; one was the actual bill (about $290); excluding the membership discounts. The other was the original bill without the discounts (about $530). They claimed that they print both checks to show you how much you saved, but if you pay attention, they charge you the gratuity from the bill without the membership discounts, so basically, they tried to charge me $89 for gratuity, which is actually the price of about 3 to 4 of the so called "complimentary flights." Once you pay that, did you really get a discount? Anyway, the gratuity was the same on both bills/checks. $89 is not 20% of $290. They then canceled my membership, which after that experience, I was going to cancel anyway. They just beat me to it! Anyway, they were upset because I challenged their deceit on the bill/check. I ended up contacting my attorney, due to the deceitfulness of their membership and how I was treated. A letter was sent to them, and their response was to justify their seemingly fraudulent practices. Bottom line: Pay attention to your check/bill/receipts, and be careful with the membership. It's not what it says it is. The food is trash and the only decent wine, in my opinion, is the milk chocolate. Save yourself the disappointment and go to another Temecula winery. I've had good experiences at the other wineries, and have only been dissatisfied with Thornton. Also, I strongly advise against the horrible tasting food. read more

I'm only giving 2 stars because our server was highly attentive, very friendly and provided great service. That being said, the food was terrible. When you go to a restaurant that's serving $30 hamburgers and $40-50 pasta , you expect the food to be prepared fresh on site, not some out of the bag/box frozen food. We received calamari that had obviously been pre-frozen, wasn't seasoned and rubbery. Artichoke smothered in a disgusting neon yellow sauce, bland flavorless burgers, and prefrozen fish with the fish & chips that was comparable to Long John Silvers, though sadly not nearly as good. We waited over an hour for what we assumed would be a delicious chef prepared meal and ended up being served microwaved dishes. The prices are far too high for this establishment to skimp on quality by serving subpar microwaved food. They should be ashamed of themselves. read more

The entire staff was adamant about not seating my group in a certain section, but then sat a group of white people in that section. Blacks & other people of color were sat in the back away from the view, on cheap & uncomfortable chairs. Food is subpar, lacks flavor / quality & is way overpriced. We will never come back. This review is only for the restaurant, Cafe Champagne: I understand this is covid times but the service here was extremely slow and they either did not have enough people working or just didn't care. We walked in and were ignored for 5-10 minutes until we were offered a table outside with a dirty bussers plate on it and crumbs on the table and chairs. Cleaned it off ourselves and waited another 15 minutes for a waiter to finally come by with waters and our drink order. I ordered the lobster panini ($28) and it was lacking half the ingredients listed on the menu and they got my side order wrong. Hubs filet ($45) was mediocre. The creme brûlée dessert was good though! Waited another 15 minutes after they dropped off the bill for him to come by and pick it up. Overpriced food for the quality & horrible service (although they were very pleasant when they actually did come by the table)... wanted to love it but we won't be back. read more

We visited the restaurant at the winery based on all the glowing reviews on yelp. We were really disappointed and will not return. We paid $30 for a chicken sandwich and fries for a $10 average sandwich. The taste was average and bun was crumbling and falling apart.. My friend paid $29 for a salad and it was so horrible she returned it and they refunded the money and gave her a free glass of wine. Everything is outrageously priced plus the service was extremely slow. Not a luxury restaurant at all. Waitress left menus on table for us like we were at a chain restaurant. Why not have them placed under silverware if you are going to bother with silver and linen tablecloths? Food took almost an hour. Comped a salad and glass of wine. But still paid $50 to split a sandwich and greasy onion rings! I regret even paying for the meal or leaving a $10 top. DO NOT FALL FOR THE HYPE. Finally stopped here for dinner last month as I've been wanting to check it out for well over a decade! We were wondering what all that hype was about their now $28 burger, that used to be $18. Our friend ordered it and it came with onion rings that were super greasy and the kind I've had other places that aren't worth the calories, definitely nothing I'd want to order. The burger was good, nothing over the top. I had the short rib dinner and was disappointed as it was like a dry pot roast. I asked for more gravy which helped. It came with mashed potatoes that were not impressionable and the fresh vegies were nice. For the price, I couldv'e gone to Lazy Dog and spent almost half that and had a way better dinner. Our server was nice - they were really late on serving our food due to a large party ahead of us and she ended up bringing us a Ceasar salad that I was totally impressed with! I make Ceasar dressing from scratch that is really good, but this is THE first ever, that I have liked someone else's over my recipe. Although the salad is totally expensive, it is a large serving and can easily feed 4 if you were to split as a first course. I'm glad to say, been there, done that. I would like to go back for a jazz concert, but otherwise - time to check out the next restaurant in town. read more

Always a pleasure to visit Thornton Winery. The staff consistently has a welcoming attitude and makes you feel they are glad to see you. Unfortunately, that is not true of all Temecula wineries, even pre-covid. We are club members and have simply had some appetizers when making our pick-up or had full meals. We have never been disappointed. Everyone is masked and gloved, our server also had a face shield and in the shop hand sanitizer was available as of 3/5/21. My wife is a fan of their chocolate wines. I will admit to enjoying them on occasion. I tend to really enjoy their red wines, tempranillo, sarayh barbera and petite sarayh. If you are not familiar the petite is a different grape and tends to be drier. In the past, weekends have had a concert series, the covid-19 pandemic is still in place as I write this. Call to see if the concerts have returned. read more

This was the second winery my friends and I went to on our trip to Temecula for wine tasting. Someone in our group printed out a deal or something for like buy one get one free wine tasting (?). Not quite sure but it might be smart to check out deals before coming. The place itself seemed smaller than the other wineries but maybe we did not see all of it. The place we went in was pretty small and was maybe the size of a larger cafe (but again there might be more that we didn't see). My friend and I shared the chocolate wine taster and the wines were pretty... Sweet and chocolaty. I'm not really a wine expert so I can't really judge the wines except for how good I thought they were, which is basically how sweet and easy to drink the wines were. Based on that, the chocolate wines were pretty good! Overall the wines were good but I didn't feel I got much of a winery experience from this place. read more

This review is for the Cafe! Make reservations, this place is BUSY. I'm glad I made reservations because people had to wait 1-2 hours to get a table. There is a lot of precautions there (proper social distancing- tables are spaced out, employees are wearing a mask, paper menus) so that was a plus. Food: we ordered the mussels, filet minion, lobster ravioli, and clams/linguini. Mussels: 1/5. 28 bucks for literally 10 mussels covered in soup with some crappy non toasted bread covered in tartar sauce?? Then they threw in some flowers to make it elegant. This was a miss for us. The sourdough slice with tartar sauce was so weird... I really hope they change it. Filet: 5/5. Properly cooked with great presentation and slides. Lobster ravioli: 4/5. This was so good. It was a pricey dish and I had 6 of them on my plate. Worth the taste but wish they gave more for hefty price. Linguini and clams: 4/5. The largest dish we had on the table. It looks very watery but was tasteful. This was a decent place to eat as a break from our wine tasting but wasn't the best place and not a place I'd really come back for. 3 stars for making customers feel safe during COVID times but dropped some starts due to insane prices without a decent sized quantity of food. read more

Ordered a glass of wine and it is in a small, substandard glass. $17.00 for less than a 4ounce pour. Mentioned it to our server, who was great) but said that was what the bar was serving. Food was good but prices have increase substantially. Read the fine print, there is an additional 3% cost increase over and above the rise in prices per plate. Not worth it. There are many other restaurants in the area I will choose over and above Thortons. Makes me sad. read more

Oh my god, amazing food and straight up service. My wife and I were former servers so this comes from our heart. Travis, Lisa and the manager Ingram were awesome. We had a reservation back to back and told them that. They bent over backwards to get us out the door on time, wine was prompt, food was fast but oh man, it was to die for amazing, the bacon wrapped meatballs were outrageously delectable. If I were in charge of these three people I would give them a raise or at least one heck of pat on the back and choice of shift. Today we did the Easter Buffet. It was $120 a person. I wouldn't of mind the price if the food was good. The prime rib was tough, salmon was ok, broccolini was over cooked, salad was wilted, fruit and vegetables not kept on ice. Didn't try the omelette bar or the breakfast items. The cookies over baked and hard. The other desserts had not taste according to my husband and he eats anything! They included a glass of sparkling wine (I don't drink alcohol) but charged for ice tea. They also charge a surcharge of 3% and automatic 20% tip. Won't be going here again read more

I sincerely wish I could rate this winery 5 stars. Our server, Montana, was awesome, the food was ok, and the wine was great. The problem we had was with our table. My niece arranged for family members to get together and because of the heat, she made reservations for 11 am, the time the winery opened. The tables are set up in two areas, a covered patio area with fans and next to that area, the seating is extended, covered with netting. Needless to say when the weather is hot, the netted area is HOT. We arrived on time. Two other parties arrived before us and were seated in the patio area. We were then seated but in the netted area. I asked to be seated in the patio area, where it was cooler, and was told that area was reserved for parties with reservations. I responded that we too had reservations and then she said we couldn't sit in that area because we were a party of 12. There was no table already set us because of our reservation, they had to move tables together to accommodate our party. That told me they weren't ready for our party and were at liberty to select our seating. So based on what we were told, as I understood it, a smaller party is treated to nicer seating simply because there are less people in their party. We were then offered seating inside, however we had our dog. Plus, the winery is beautiful and outdoor seating is the reason for picking the winery. While we dined in the hot area with the ice in our water glasses melting, the tables in the cooler area remained empty, I guess waiting for the people who made "reservations" to arrive. I also noticed another large party arrived and were eventually moved the the cooler area. It occurs to me as I write this that maybe it was us and there really isn't the policy that large parties don't get nice seating? Whatever the reason, I did not agree with a policy that puts large parties in bad seating if better seating is available. Two more things. Two of us are in our "sunset" years. Not all seniors can tolerate heat as well as younger people. Not that I expect special treatment because of my age but I never expected to get special negative treatment because of the size of our party. And remember those tables that we were told were for people with reservations, they remained empty, I guess waiting for those parties to show up. read more

We were excited for a good glass of wine and a nice lunch. The wine tasting was very good and we bought and enjoyed a glass down on the grass in the shade with a beautiful view. As for lunch, find another spot to eat!!! When we saw the menu, the prices were WAY more than I would have expected, $29 for a burger and fries, $28 for a salad+$8 to put chicken on it. After waiting 20+ minutes for a server to take our order we finally got wine. That was the last time we saw our waitress or really anyone. 45 minutes later we got our food, my medium rare burger was cooked well done, the $8 chicken was burned and dried out, and the candied pecans on the salad were not candied. After an hour of waiting and halfway thru our meal, the staff finally showed up and filled up our waters. We didn't see our server until we flagged someone down to find her for our bill... 15 minutes after we were done eating and extremely thirsty. For the price on the menu, our expectations were not met at all and the service experience was disappointing. We wish we could rate Thornton Vineyard separate from Cafe Champagne, but can't. My wife and I went for dinner on 2/11. The place was lightly packed not crowded. We ordered chatted with the waitress and ordered our wine right away. After a couple of minutes we placed our order and chatted and enjoyed sipping our wine and talking. Now here is when it goes south... 45 minutes after or sing no food. Wife signals the waitress asks what is going on. The waitress says we are short staffed and it will "be out soon". And additional 15 to 25 minutes, passes still no food. We flag down the waitress again ask what is going on, and she said "soon" and was very apologetic. But I went into a shut down mode and said I want the bill for the wine and want to leave. She brings me the bill for two glasses of wine, and then and only then did the manager come over. He said he removed the food from the bill (i bit my sarcastic tongue) and gave us 15% off. The wife (who worked in restaurants in both LA and NYC) went into the manager and told him how to run a restaurant. You know comp the wine for us tonight and in the future bring a salad and bread and customers will forgive slow food if they have something. She also asked why he never went to tables and he did not have a good answer. Maybe the food is good, maybe it stinks. I can not comment on the food; but, the manager needs to learn how to manage and how to train the staff. They advertise their burgers at the entrance. Perched atop the entrance to the Temecula Wine country, Thornton offers if beautiful view and pleasant wines. Is there a restaurant it's clean, well-maintained, and offers personable service. Based on their advertising their burgers, I had to try one. The burger was about on par with your standard chain restaurants. However, the pricing was anything But standard. At $30 for a hamburger, it better live up to expectations. It certainly did not. If looking for something more casual when dining in Temecula, remove Thornton from your list. read more
