Food was bland and tasteless. Had such great hopes for some home style cooking; such a disappointment

Why travel North of The Woodlands you may ask? Why venture across the San Jacinto river into the darkness of the River Bend Station? Why walk into a family restaurant shortly before 6 pm and the arrival of the 1 - 10 year old crowd? Not because I was desperately hungry. Not to savor exotic spices. Not to experience a unique dining experience. It needed to be done, and done right, so the review could appear on Yelp! Alissa provided great, prompt, friendly service. Eleven (11) Excellent, hot, wonderfully crusted, hand-made green fried tomatoes. Somehow we managed without the twelve pieces promised on the menu; a small error in count. The fact we all had our own serving plate, each with a side of ranch dressing for dipping easily compensated us. Atmosphere was set for families used to the sound of children above the hum of the beverage machine. Country music was on, but barely audible. TV's were available, muted, and on parent-friendly FNC and ESPN. Lighting was unpleasantly industrial fluorescent. Chicken fried steak was thick, and over coated, but remarkably tender. Gravy was standard. Terrific onion rings....but, One thing: Spice. I'm not sure if there is any in the kitchen, but it certainly did not make it onto the plate in any form. Instead, each table is equipped with a bottle of Louisiana Hot Sauce. I restrained myself from pouring it onto everything except the Charro beans, which, by golly, should be spicy! We were pleasantly invited to return for authentic Mexican, and I may, someday, when I cannot manage to find Herrera's. read more

Sunday mornings can be hectic for breakfast after Church. Four of us went to The Whistle Stop and had a great experience. Our waitress , Rachel, was very attentive and accurate with our orders. The food was tasty and the coffee was hot! We will definitely be back ! read more

The Whistle Stop Cafe serves stick to your ribs food with a solid selection of beverages. We had chicken fried steaks with onion rungs, fried pickles, mixed veggies, and bacon green beans. Everything felt like it was cooked fresh. The breading on the pickles was insane and crunchy. In fact all the batter was crisp and perfect. The mixed veggies and green beans were fresh and hot ... not wilted. And the white gravy for the chicken fried steak was just the right gooiness and savoriness. The only thing that was unexpected was that the food was lacking pepper and salt. Normally, the plethora of fried foods we had would be overly salty. It was a shock to get food that was flavorful but not over the top on salt or pepper. Of course saline and pepper was easily remedied to the level we expected. Kudos! There's not anything wrong with this restaurant in particular, but there's not too much that's right either. This location is at the front of my neighborhood and out of convenience I've gone twice, I should have stayed home and made my own lunch both times. it wasn't good, it wasn't bad, just not worth spending money on. read more

Looking for a lunch place on the way back home. Stopped in, all the tables in the small dining room were full and we found seats at the bar. Server was very friendly. We ordered House salad and Club sandwich to split. Food came out fast and was split for us already. Salad was fresh and delicious. Club sandwich was great and French fries seemed hand cut and very tasty. We will be back. read more

First time there today for lunch. The chicken and dumplings were not as good as I am use to. Big round balls for dumplings. Tasty but not going to order again. My husband ordered hamburger steak it was ok but his sides were awful. The Mac and cheese is the powered Kraft Mac and cheese. Couldn't believe it. The mashed potatoes were cold , lumpy and the gravy was not good. Sorry , for this review but maybe it will help you. We ordered French fries and they were delicious!! We might go back and order something else. But please get another recipe for Mac and cheese. That's ridiculous!! read more

The food was terrible!! The steak-fingers had zero flavor and the batter was like a chalky paste. The avocado on the avocado toast was mostly brown and had peel on it. The egg was cold, had a strange taste and the toast was soggy. The chili dogs were below average and the fries were cold and had no flavor. Just YUK! read more

I have only been to this place one and a half times. The first time I wandered in because I was too early for a nearby appointment. The doors were wide open, and I thought "cool, I could use some breakfast!" I was shouted at by a male staff member as soon as I stepped inside, " WE'RE NOT OPEN YET!". I was embarrassed, startled, and made to feel as un welcomed as un welcomed gets. I didn't have time to even lay my eyes on the menu, or get a general vibe of the place. I quickly turned around and rushed out. Over the years, I never went back, because well...it left an unsettling feeling in me, of being un welcoming. Then recently I had my parents over, and everyone was hungry. Whistle Stop Cafe was the nearest place, so I suggested we go there. It was almost closing time, and quite frankly, we didn't quite make the cut off time. The staff was amazing, and took our orders, and said it's no problem. Our waitress stayed late on her shift just for us, which is really going above and beyond. We had appetizers and Burgers, which were so good, I kept thinking about them even months later! I am a fan of café style food anyway, and I've been to plenty of them all over the western US. Whistle Stop stands out, and I am looking forward to returning and trying more items on the menu. Great little mom & pop place to stop in & have a good meal. Everything is homemade with the exception of the chocolate cake which the waiter clearly pointed out. Prices are very reasonable & service was exceptional. All meals very fantastic, cooked & prepared perfectly. Not sure if they were overly nice due to my (accidentally) mismatched foot attire but we will visit many more x's! read more

They have daily specials....with the best days being Friday and Saturday...the special is all you can eat catfish for $10.95 paired with the onion rings, is a for sure winner. Mom and I stopped here on our way into Houston. It was probably around 2. It could definitely use a good sweeping, but other then that, we were happy. They have a menu with great options. We decided to do loaded baked potatoes with meat. Mom got the pulled pork and I got the grilled chicken. We weren't expecting the meat to be on the side. Lol. But the flavor was great on both! The Whistle Stop Cafe is a wonderfully warm comfortable experience. The decor is casual railroad and the staff is so polite and makes you feel at home. The portions are large and most likely you'll need a take out box ! Food is all home cooked and tasty. I had the steak fingers and hush puppies. The onion rings are beyond compare. Large menu. The grilled pork chops were to die for, very tender. Normally I won't order porkchop at a restaurant because most place screw them up but they know what they're doing here. The peach Cobbler was freaking amazing along with the banana pudding. This is definitely a place you would go out of your way to get to for the desserts alone. read more

Friendly little spot with plenty of Local Yocal's. Just off the 1-45 offering greasy spoon entrees and some fun Southern comforts. Two doors to enter leave plenty of room for flies to dine too. The super dirty napkin box on the table was a turnoff. Food was okay, we ordered some fried green tomatoes but if you grow your own like I do and make your own, then...no need for your Southern fix. No big deal except they didn't even fill them halfway. They were more concerned with other diners that were not there alone . I could barely cover 1/3 of the steak . I emailed them , no reply . I was expecting this place to be awesome because the reviews are all great. The service was good, the cafe was clean, but the food has zero flavor. I ordered the chicken tenders with mashed potatoes and gravy. The chicken was juicy, but flavorless. The mashed potatoes didn't even taste like they had butter. The gravy was also flavorless. My boyfriend ordered the chicken fried steak and we had the same issue. The steak was very very chewy and did not even seem like it had salt or pepper. Maybe Breakfast is their forte and fried food is not. I really wanted to like this place but it was hard to enjoy. read more

I've only walked out before ordering from two or three restaurants in my life. You can add this one to the list. We arrived right at their opening time of 10:30am. We appeared to be the only customers in the place other than a man at the bar counter who was on his phone. After being told to sit wherever we wanted to by a polite young man, we ordered a cup off coffee. During all this time the gentleman at the bar was on the phone talking loudly. He soon got up and while speaking made several tours around the restaurant, in and out of the kitchen, all while continuing his loud phone conversation. We stopped into the Whistle Stop Cafe for a late lunch on the way back to Dallas. The chicken fried steak sandwich was amazing! My kids had the chicken strips and the cheeseburger and their plates were cleaned. Fries were delicious and so was the chocolate pie! Definitely recommend!!! read more
