Been a customer here for years sometimes 3 or more times per month. It was our go-to place. But not after tonight's experience. The food sent out should have never been sent out. Overcooked and undercooked. I know it sounds weird but my fries were literally 1/2 over cooked and 1/2 undercooked. Wife's chicken fried steak was overcooked so bradley that parts of the batter were just black. We tried our best to let slide what we could obviously someone in the back was having a bad day. What really made us furious was not the food. It was the attitude that the manager/ waitress gave when we told her about it. She should have been ashamed of putting out the food she did but rather than try to rectify the situation she went into telling me that the cooks were working fifty hours a week and that they couldn't hire anyone because of covid. The attitude on the manager / waitress was unacceptable. After a heated debate that should have never happened we ate what we could and when I went to pay the passive aggressive waitress/ manager wouldn't take my credit card and told me that everyone was entitled to there opinion. And she is right. And my opinion is that the waitress / manager needs more training on how to avoid arguments with customers that can be avoided. I am giving 2 stars one because we did eat there and 70 % of the meal was edible. The other star is for past performance which I must say was impeccable. But it only took the attitude of one waitress whom we have know for years and who has always been great to ensure that you will never be able to try to win my business back because I will never set foot in your establishment again. read more

Call the health department! Some serious sanitary concerns at this establishment. We sat down for breakfast and ordered. While waiting we witnessed the waitress pouring something in the kitchen. We watched her pony tail dip multiple times in the sauce she was pouring. She then brought over our food which was horrendous. Ordered a cheese omelet and there were two large slices of unmelted American cheese on top and everything appeared to be undercooked. Potatoes undercooked, cheese not melted, and even the toast was soggy. The only thing that was cooked and overcooked at that was the bacon. Needless to say we didn't eat there, paid our tab and immediately left after that. I'd suggest finding elsewhere to eat. read more

Seriously??? Are the people who've eaten here locals. I'd like to start by saying if you are worried about getting COVID I'd keep driving and here's why: I sat there for an hour and literally heard a man less then 6 feet from me cough like 20 times and not a soul in the place even gave it a second glance, if you know what I mean. As far as cleanliness I watched them clean two tables and not even a rag was pulled out to wipe them down, so err on the side of caution when using any condiments on the table. Now if you're still with me I'll continued and say the food is so overrated it's not even worth talking about. Literally ordered the two "cafe favorites" on the menu and would never do so again. The French dip was a large piece of bread with a small amount of dry over cooked meat on it. The chicken fried steak was nothing to write home about. Finally my 4 year old had to have the pie, welp the crust was literally not cooked, like I mean at all. Holy cow y'all. I was heading over to my friend's house to meet her new baby, and I offered to bring her some tea and dessert. I ended up at Whistle Stop. She said the tea was amazing. Lol. But the real meat of my story is that I got three pieces of pie. One for her and one for my husband and I. Well I was trying to be healthy and didn't eat my piece until three days later. Sad...all of the waitstaff tonight except one male was wearing a mask properly. Of course, the only one who was wearing his mask under his chin was our waiter!!! Seems our waiter is one of the managers Super sad that the person who has a leadership role cannot be a role model for the other employees. A sign is posted on the door which states that people should wear a mask. If we ever do go back, I will ask for waitstaff who properly wears a mask. read more

Sunday visit and the place was packed. Friendly people. Owner on site. The restaurant was fairly small but the food was great and prices were good. Chicken and dumplings were the special of the day for 8.00. Portion was a good size. Couldn't finish it. Green beans were great. We didn't have desert but they looked fantastic. read more

This little place is simply amazing; my husband and I came for lunch and we end up happily surprise with this place, the food tasted homemade, the service was amazing, the environment is home-like. Had a lot of great reviews but went post pandemic and must say the food was terrible and kitchen presentation was dismal. Biscuits tasted like burnt hamburger buns, sausage was taken off a Totinos pizza, wrong egg order; all thrown together with some soupy gravy. My date had English muffin sandwich with meat so grotesque wouldn't feed it to my dog. Ingredients were as fresh as 2009. Three of us came in for breakfast. Waffle with blueberry: the plate was cold, waffle was barely room temperature, and raw in the center. Sent back for another try. Second waffle was hot, but still raw in the center, served on a cold plate. The conductor: ordered eggs scrambled soft with sausage, hash browns, and pancakes. The pancakes were flavorless and raw inside, eggs were cooked soft, but not didn't taste good. Sausage was cold. The box car: ham, eggs, hash browns and toast. Nice slice of ham, eggs were cooked sunny side up were just ok, no complaint on the hash browns. The toast was so cold, you couldn't melt butter on it. Asked for warm toast that was buttered. We were asked if we wanted it cooked in the toaster, rather than cooked on the grill. Yes, but still got toast that was cooked on the grill, soaked in butter. Met my daughter at The Whistle Stop for my birthday. We are both huge lovers of fried green tomatoes, and these were the best around. Tender, not greasy and the order came with 10, which we had no problem eating them all. We also had the daily special - Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes and gravy - WONDERFUL . The food and the service was so good, my husband and I stopped in for breakfast a few days later. He had the Conductor and added biscuits and sausage gravy. I had the Box Car. Both options were served hot, large portion size and really good. We will definitely be back. It's small but very clean and the staff is very friendly and welcoming. Well very disappointed in this situation at this establishment! I walked in and was greeted at first with professionalism. But as I was seating I was greeted with ignorance by the owner trying to tell me about ADA compliance and would refuse service if I wasn't complaint to his orders. With out arguing I left. Didn't have the patience to educate someone about service dogs! Don't get me wrong, food is good but need to be ADA compliance educated and not listen to random people! I don't know how long this place has been in it's current spot, I've lived in Conroe for 2 1/2 years and always noticed it but thought it was oddly located and never made it by. Today I wanted a chicken fried steak and really do not like Vernon's so I searched yelp and there we were. The location is odd, but easy to get to. Parking was great, staff was really attentive and nice, menu was just the right size. Prices are reasonable, decor and atmosphere are really laid back and very comfortable. The food was great! we ordered fried green tomatoes, fried pickles and cheesy fries for an appetizer. My husband isn't a big pickle fan and typically hates fried pickles but he repeatedly said they were amazing. The fried green tomatoes were good too. They were perfectly fried and tasted and looked fresh. My son had a hamburger and fries, his favorite meal, and he ate every last bite which is rare despite his love of the two. My daughter loved her hot dog and my husband ate his patty melt and commented that it was pretty great. I had the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. Most people are probably really used to plate sized chicken fried steaks, sometimes with a heavy breading. This piece was thicker on meat and thinner (appropriately) on breading. It was so good! And the potatoes and green beans were like I had made them at home. We had some ice cream and banana pudding for dessert. All great. Btw- their dessert menu is kind of impressive for a smaller place. We loved it. There was plenty of food on everyone's plate, service was great and we really enjoyed our Sunday dinner. (They said they're open until 9 too. Kind of surprising and really nice.) Service was very good. The food was pretty good as well. I had a grilled chopped steak with fried okra and mashed potatoes. We also had an order of fried green tomatoes, of course! They were very good, although a little heavy on the breading for my taste. The chopped steak wasn't the best I have ever had. Was just so-so. That's about the only thing keeping me from giving this a five star rating. Perfect little place! My wife and I stopped in for lunch on 5/12/12. We went in were told to just sit where we wanted. We were promptly greeted and ordered ice teas and left to browse the menus. Over 10 minutes later without seeing our server my wife got up to find out what gives. Apparently there was some confusion over who was supposed to be serving us, no biggie but I would recommend they rethink the seat yourself policy. My wife ordered steak finger basket and I ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and onion rings. Our food promptly arrived my wife's steak finger basket with fresh cut fries. There were 3 steak fingers with the smallest being about 8" x 2" and the biggest one was easily a foot long. My plate had the CFS, mashed potatoes and green beans? Apparently when I said "onion rings" it sounded like "green beans". Our server apologized and said she would get the onion rings right away, after she walked away my wife whom I have with 10 years without ever eating a single green bean says " I thought you said green beans too". Really? Thanks for having my back wifey. The CFS was excellent, best one I have had it quite sometime. It reminded me of the CFS at Mel's Diner in Tomball but better. The mashed potatoes were good, not great. Sadly the green beans were left untouched, for what it's worth they looked good,if your into green veggies. When the onion rings arrived it was was well worth the wait. Best onion rings I have had anywhere in the spring/woodlands/conroe area. We had noticed several pies/cakes in a case when we walked in so we asked our server what our options were. She said the variety changes daily based on what their baker decides to make that day. I had the cocoanut cream pie and my wife had banana pudding both of which were excellent. Based on the fresh cut fries and excellent onion rings I am making an educated guess the burgers will be excellent and plan to go back soon to taste this theory. All in all if you are looking for some really good comfort food I strongly suggest you make a visit to the Whistle Stop. read more

Oh I may have to try this place again, but my first foray was unimpressive. I had the chicken finger basket with onion rings. A good gauge for general food'ness I would say. Unfortunately I was left wanting. The nuggets were soulless. So were the onion rings. And I am a big fan of homemade onion rings... It was like they didn't season anything. Nothing inherently wrong, just bland... I like BBQ sauce, but I don't want to feel like I NEED BBQ sauce to make something taste better. I like it as an enhancer, but I felt like this. Also kind of expensive. I think I ended up paying 11 bucks or so for the tenders and rings. Way too much for the quality. May be back again just to give another chance, but doubting it thus far. read more

This visit will be our last. We've tried The Whistlestop about a dozen times but always leave with some level of disappointment. Todays complaint: waffles that tasted frozen and were delivered luke warm. The hash browns could not have been more bland even when I had onions added. The service here has never been an issue. My husband and I came here for lunch. He ordered the All American burger with fried pickles. The burger was massive and very juicy, delicious indeed. The fried pickles were delicious as well. My husband loves fried pickles and I swear it was his favorite part of his meal. The sweet teas was great as well. I had ordered the grilled catfish with fried okra and macaroni and cheese. Now I was not disappointed with my meal at all. I enjoyed every bit of it. The catfish was the best I had in a while. Our server was amazing. I think his name was Austin. His people skills were excellent from the moment we sat at the booth. If you are looking for a great meal at a great price along with some friendly service, this is the place.
