I've lived in walking distance from this place for years and never been. I always saw the rave reviews and just scratched my head since I never actually saw it- until yesterday, that is. So I took my entire family and the doggoes for brunch this beautiful Sunday morning, grabbed an outdoor seat and went in to giddily make our order. The menu is pretty limited but we all found something to have and was happy with the friendly service. My heuvos rancheros was delicious. My mom enjoyed her shrimp and grits (said the grits was a bit spicy for her taste and my brother said it was one of the softest waffles he's ever had. Looks like we found a new place to stick into our weekend brunch rotation!

The Union is the ideal neighborhood spot and a great place to have brunch or lunch anytime of the week. The staff is friendly and the interior is big and warm. I came in on Sunday looking for a burger and was very pleased with what I got. I ordered at the counter and sat myself right before a sizable rush of families and groups came in for lunch. I waited around 10 minutes after ordering before getting my food. For $16, you get a good sized burger and some really well done fries. I ordered my burger cooked medium and the patty was juicy without being undercooked; the burger was moist and benefited from the fresh onion, lettuce, and pickle. I expected pickle slices but was pleased that they served a pickle spear itself. The texture of the Union's fries are special; they prioritize crispness which I definitely appreciated. The burger sauce, served on the side, was pretty good as well.

We recently went to a shop for a quick lunch. What we discovered was a wonderful restaurant in McLean. I enjoyed the Cobb salad with shrimp added. It had bacon, hard boiled eggs, blue cheese crumbs, cucumbers, lettuce and tomatoes. It was wonderful. My husband enjoyed the hot honey sandwich with sweet potato fries. The service was quick and the staff was friendly. It had music and people coming in to enjoy the food. I will be back to enjoy the vibes and many more meals with my husband.

Came here today for a drink and bite to eat. It was empty when I came but the bartender and server were extremely nice and accommodating. Has a deli/ sports bar feel. Terrific music. Old Fashioned- really good! Boozy and balanced. Cobb salad - fantastic. One of the most delicious Cobb salads I've ever had. I substituted the Ranch for Blue Cheese. Perfect late lunch/early dinner spot.

From the reviews of this place I had high hopes. My experience of the place however did not match the reviews. This place seems like a lunch place or a sandwich shop with alcohol options. It's a sterile environment that has a small number of tables and the food was also so so. My partner and I both ordered burgers. I ordered medium and it was more on the well done side. It was a thick burger. Appeared to be a pre-made patty based on the size and thickness. The burger was large; however, that's about all it had going for it. They do have alcohol options and you order your food at the counter. It is counter service. The fries were ok however the taste made me think that it was just food service seasoned fries. Nothing exciting about it. Portion size was generous. The taste and atmosphere were just average.

Very small food portions. Ordered the lamb. $20 for four lamb pieces. Each lamb piece is half a bit maybe up to 1 bite. So 2.5 full bites for $20. I guess it's good if you're on a keto diet. Not super tasty. Not worth the price!!!

The union continues to amaze. For good reason they have long been McLean, most popular dining spot for families, couples, and everything in between. I ordered the union burger and it was a symphony of soft deliciously cooked medium rare beef patty, brioche style bun, and came all dressed with bacon, cheese, lettuce and condiments. A giant burger to die for with A huge serving of delectable fries, and a spear of pickle. My wife ordered the pan seared cod. Soft succulent fish cooked to perfection. The pictures don't do it justice. The ambience with lots of families and young couples from the neighborhood was completely unique and a remarkable throwback to a different era. The service from Kristi, Amir, and Esteban was as though we were sitting at home. This place is a real gem, Long may it reign!

I've been coming to The Union since spring 2020 and the food and service are consistently amazing! My go tos are the salmon plate, burger, and fattoush salad -- the summer menu is my favorite as soon as it is available. I wish every restaurant learned how to cook both salmon and polenta this consistently great with fresh ingredients every time Although I rave about the summer menu, the winter menu is also great, with my go tos being one of the soups or the cod. The burger thankfully stays around all year, so I double back to that as well. Giri is an extremely nice owner who remembers his customers and greets me every single time I come in or ensures to come to my table to say hello if I am dining in. I really miss living only a few minutes away, but I definitely will continue making the drive a few times a week for my salmon plate or fattoush salad craving to be fulfilled.

This place is cozy. Walked in for lunch and also happen to catch happy hour. We were greeted as we walked in and catered to the entire duration. The entire staff is super friendly and that comfort alone was enough to have me coming back to support the business. Our order consisted of the calamari, a beyond burger w/fries, shrimp po boy w/side salad, an old fashioned & 2 margaritas. The calamari came w/a white sauce, maybe mayo based but I didn't try it. I'd prefer a marinara. However, they were crispy golden and still delicious. The shrimp po boy has grilled/sautéed like shrimp on a soft bun. All it needed was a remoulade sauce or a chipotle type mayo. The beyond burger was good, but my partner said the bun was larger than the burger itself. Other than that, they enjoyed their food and we both said we would return. The drinks were on point too. The margarita had more sour mix than I would like but the drinks did sneak up for a nice buzz. All in all, I'd return and I encourage others to check this place out and support them as well.

As much as it is possible in the toney suburb of McLean, The Union has a cozy neighborhood feel to it; which is saying something since the McLean culinary landscape is usually inhabited by chichi or national chain restaurants. What really sets this place apart from the other eateries in the area, especially in this lingering era of COVID, is the spacious outdoor patio. I met up with some work buddies for a HH get together, which was the first time in over 18 months (BTW - we were all fully vaccinated) we did so in-person. We thought it was time to actually enjoy a beverage and meal IRL as opposed to staring at a screen over ZOOM or MS TEAMS. I would describe the concept of The Union as part fast-casual and part upscale cuisine, with a dash of bistro thrown in. The ordering process is you walk into the main dining area and select your food and drink from the counter. After placing your order, you receive a number where your food and drinks get delivered once ready. This system is preferred since it ensures that each diner only pays for his/her share of a meal. What I sampled was tasty and prepared well. The calamari arrived at the table still sizzling and was not overly breaded but still had a crispy exterior. The accompanying Lebanese style garlic Toum dipping sauce was good, but IMHO could've used a bit more salt and even more garlic flavor. Sliders were good - nothing exceptional, but good. Thick cut bacon strips topped mini-Angus beef patties, with the usual toppings of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and house aioli. The patties could've been cooked a minute or so less, since it was bordering on the well-done side, but was still moist enough. Battered fries were good and enough for folks at the table to share. The Union Happy Hour prices are good for McLean, but comparable to what you'd pay in DC. $1 off small plates, and $1 off beers on tap and certain house wines. The Union is not the cheapest option since my tab for 2 HH beers and two appetizers came to roughly $41 (with tax and tip). But I like this place and it was definitely nice to sit outdoors catching up with old friends while enjoying the cool September evening breeze.

So I have eaten at the union and done take away once. I had the the burger, literally the best burger I have had in years, bar none, and I love me a burger. I had the chicken pibil sandwich, snarfed that one down, omg so yummy and unexpected in it's warm spiciness. I took out the shrimp poboy, it's not a Nola po boy, but the size of the shrimp and the sauce is a winner. The fries are great, the lemonade is fabulous and made fresh at the bar. Can't wait to go back. And super good lanniape, you can sit at a table outside with your puppy and other best friends. read more

I was looking for a place to meet a friend for lunch and found this gem. They are very serious about social distancing and following all health guidelines so right off the bat, I felt comfortable eating here. The menu is mouth watering and I had a hard time deciding what to get. I had the Pilibo (?) Chicken sandwich and a Mojito. Delicious!! Definitely going back there for another meal. A hidden gem in McLean. Amazing service, delicious food and cocktails. During Covid, there is a shaded seating area outside, or you can easily socially distance in the restaurant. Highly recommend- it is a very welcomed addition to 'downtown'. Enjoy! read more

I'm glad this restaurant has survived the pandemic. Everything here is consistently delicious. My kids love the Mac and Cheese and Brussels sprouts. We also like the burger (it's the best, and there are sliders available too), chicken Milanese, and ancient grain bowl. The service is friendly and efficient. You can't go wrong here! read more

I don't know what happened to my original review so I will try again. I ordered takeout Union burger - it was incredible. This is how incredible it was- due to covid, I ordered takeout, which isn't ideal especially for a burger and fries as they are best eaten immediately after they are cooked, but I really wanted a burger. It was a total hassle through no fault of the establishment- just difficult to eat a burger in your car trying to be careful washing your hands in your car, trying to put ketchup and mustard on your burger and I didn't think it through and didn't have anything to drink so ran over to Starbucks. I didn't get to eat that burger for 20 minutes after I picked it up. Anyway - that 20 minute old burger in my car was so delicious. I couldn't believe it and cannot imagine how good it would be under better dining circumstances. I'm definitely ordering it again- my mouth waters thinking about it. read more

Did carry out from The Union last night. Burger and fries and a gain bowl. Everything was excellent. Ordering and pickup were as efficient as could be. Food is packed in cardboard containers, which kept things hot and the fries crisp. Also, generated relatively little trash. We will order from The Union again. read more

GREAT spot to catch up with friends or enjoy a casual meal with family. The menu offers something for everyone, from a refreshing Ancient grain bowl to succulent Lamb chops or delicate Salmon and a perfectly poured Moscow Mule, followed by their decadent banana creme brûlée, we loved it all! The food is always fresh and burgers come out perfectly. Nice selection of draft beers. We sat outdoors on the patio by a heat lamp, and the staff was friendly and attentive. I do wish that lighting indoors was a little dimmer for evening service, but that is the only thing I'd change. The Union is a keeper! read more

This place is wonderful! The food was fresh and delicious - I added steak to the grain bowl and it was tender and yummy, and my husband got the Asian Chicken salad, which had a great crunch and little kick. The kids loved the chicken tenders and fries (and we sneaked a few bites too) and the staff was super kind to them, even offering some coloring and cookies. They were incredibly nice and welcoming and we felt safe and spaced during COVID with the ample outdoor seating, although there was plenty of space inside as well. I really like the order at the front model, but they still came around to make sure we were doing ok and enjoying everything. Great experience all around! The Union will definitely become a staple for us! read more

Found this place in downtown Mclean in the middle of early Covad times and have really enjoyed. They have a simple menu with tasty, fresh dishes you order at the counter and they bring food to your cable. Where the concept is casual, the food is high end . They also have a full bar with drink specials which is great if you're in the mood. I'm looking forward to new menu items and going back every chance we get. read more

The best burger ever!!! Just ask Siri....it will come up as the "best burger in town". We also got the ricotta Parfait which is something I've never tasted before. It was outstanding, light and refreshing! The Banana creme Brulé tasted like an elegant banana pudding. Everything was Registered Dietitian approved in flavor!!! Lunch at The Union was so yummy! My aunt, my cousin, and I were in town and each wanted different things. The Union has all of them. My aunt loved her shrimp po'boy, I loved my union burger, and my cousin loved her union cobb. Everything was made to order and I even had my burger cooked exactly how I like it--medium. The warm chocolate chip cookies were the most perfect sweet ending to a great lunch. I'll definitely be back. read more

My husband and I just stopped by for lunch. I ordered the burger and my husband got the pibil chicken sandwich. Both were great. The best thing was that it was really fast service. You go up and order your food at the counter and they give you a number to bring to your table. Our food was out in under 10 minutes and it was delicious. My burger was cooked perfectly and the toppings really added to the flavors. I love the concept of really good food, served fast. We ordered the chocolate chip cookies to go and they were average. I will try the banana creme brulee next time. The restaurant is family friendly and we will bring the kiddos for dinner next time. So glad to get some more yummy food options in downtown McLean. read more

Will be back (did takeout)! Had the delicious and generous-portioned comfort food--panini, beyond burger and fries. The faloush salad was uninspired and a disappointment--half a head of iceberg lettuce sprinkled with a few "garden variety" toppers. The reviews/stars were definitely deceiving. We were not impressed with the Milanese, NY steak or kids chicken fingers (same as chicken Milanese minus the salad). Chicken had no flavor was hardly seasoned just breaded. The Milanese for $16 definitely needed a carb with it I felt hungry after. Margaritas were okay. Not impressed and would not recommend. read more

My family has eaten here three times, and all three times my husband ordered the steak because it was so darn good. For sides, the French fries taste home made and the mashed potatoes are delicious. The ambiance is very casual and there's no table service. Rather than ordering through a QR code, place your order at the bar and then you'll get a text alert when the food is ready for pick-up at the long table closest to the bar. The line is always pretty short and you can get a drink within 5-10 min, the food takes longer and even up to 1/2 hour for fries. I would stick to the beer on draft, the cocktails can be hit/miss depending on the bartender, the draft drinks tend to have better consistency. The Wildberry Mule cocktail and Pina Colada Sangria and Peach Seltzer on draft were my picks while the Bourbon Smash, Passionfruit Mojito, Pina Colada Mojito, and the Passionfruit Seltzer were misses. On the flip side, the bartenders poured a generous amount of Prosecco for Mimosas, much appreciated! The bottled Angry Orchard apple cider is generally my go-to. There's always a mocktail on the menu (came in handy when I was pregnant!) The new battered fries are so much better than last year! The menu is limited with simple bar food (bbq pulled pork sandwich, burger, grilled cheese, hot dog, fries, kettle chips). Wish there were more vegetarian options like charcuterie board, hummus and crackers, nachos, mac and cheese, etc. While I give credit for having a Veggie Burger on the menu, it's sad and disappointing. It has a very smoky meaty flavor (from the grill, not the patty) with lackluster toppings - the vegan cheese is disgusting. I would swap out the kettle chips and pay the upcharge for fries. The doughy pretzel sticks are quite salty and a step up from the movie theater. They are good for absorbing the alcohol! Despite these minor complaints, I love coming here with family and fries. So glad The Perch opened up, Starr Hill Biergarten is a great spot to kick back and relax with a beer or 2!

That said, the manager and his staff, our wonderful server completely turned the experience around with their kindness. They comped part of our meal, brought out desserts for my husband's birthday, and even treated me to a mocktail. It was such a thoughtful gesture and made the night feel really special. Reservations - I've been with OpenTable and other restaurant online booking systems for decades but this is a first for me. They have two separate OpenTable listings (as noted in other reviews). I was clear in that i just wanted an after work chill happy hour. I booked for 4:30. After promptly showing up at the wren for my 4:30 appointment I was told, Naisho room doesn't open until 5 pm.... So why did you let me book for 4:30?!?! No explanation. No apology just "you're early..." 2. I promptly dropped $70 for drinks and an appetizer at the Wren bar to hold me and my guests over. It wasn't bad but that's not what I was hoping for... at 4:30. 3. The service to the speakeasy was great. The "gym stag" had our 4:30 and let us in at... 5:03 pm... 4. The waitress inside the speakeasy was super awkward and off putting. She really needs a class on etiquette. I ordered quite a bit right off the bat but my guests slow roll throughout the experience and she didn't seem too happy with that. Taking away our menus doesn't encourage us to order either. You charge $22 for one tea sandwhich but can't afford to print out more menus? The menus were also pretty dingy and I hand sanitized after using them. 5. Food. Was mid at best. Not at all authentic Japanese. I had the oyster shooter, temaki, Wagyu toast, Wagyu quesadilla, and mocktail. The oyster shooter was too sweet. And you could only taste the oyster and caviar at the end. Mostly as an aftertaste. There was a "too sweet" aspect to most of the food. The temaki was okay and I liked the crunchy bits but they went too far with the plastic wrap on the seaweed. The plastic wrap gave me Japanese 7-11 onigiri vibes. You do that if you aren't efficient enough to get the food out to guests at once and the seaweed will get soggy. I'm not sure if it was for a "fun factor" for people who are unfamiliar with grocery store onigiri in Asia but in a restaurant it should be done for you. The Wagyu toast was a HUGE disappointment. It was Sooooo sweet. I filet barely taste anything except the gross, sweet jam. And the toast was soggy and the texture of the bread felt prepared the day before and like refrigerator. It was not toasted at all. The star was the Wagyu quesadilla with beef tendon chips. It was the cheapest item on the menu and the most filling and delicious. 6. Drinks were very good. Expect about $20 a pop... $50 for the Japanese whiskey is highway robbery. Nothing really "rare." I have most bottles on the kitchen counter from the Virginia ABc or DC Costco. You can buy an entire bottle of the Japanese whiskey at Costco for the cost of one serving here. Overall, the Naisho room felt like all hype. For over $100 I was still pretty hungry. If the food tasted good I would have ordered more but I didn't think it was worth it. You get a nice view but it's the same from most of the capital one building. Same view from the brewery. Don't waste your money. Go elsewhere. Plenty of better happy hour spots for much much less considering if you stay for more than two hours you have to pay for parking (we did becuase, well, our reservation was at 4:30...)

At first, I thought it was just a restaurant to order food and dine but only to find out that It'll be one of the best and my favorite here at McLean, VA.
