Went to The Trident in 2018 and thought it was such a cool reminder the 60s and 70s and hippie times. Could not remember the name when I recently revisited Sausalito but was thrilled to find the restaurant still standing. I will not forget the name again. We have always enjoyed trident but after today we will not be returning. They must have changed cooks because the steak frites tasted like straight dog food and the cioppino had pieces of burnt salmon and shrimp. When we addressed the burnt food to the server he proceeded say he would ask about it and then to do nothing but avoid our table. So normally this is our go to place whenever in Marin. Love the deviled eggs, ahi tuna app, shishito peppers, etc. We usually have the kitchen make us a very simple pasta as there's nothing close to what we want on the menu as a main. Usually a simple request.... Now we get some rude general manager named Rick who clearly needs to retire and he has not one glimmer of a speck of personality, or normal kindness. We didn't ask to talk to him, he came over - probably as a result of a conversation between our server and the kitchen. Because of hint, and solely because of him, we will never be back. Never. Will never ever recommend again. We're not huge big spenders, but we spend. Probably $2500 or so I'm the past 10 months (work and personal). What attracted me to The Trident was the picturesque views from the deck of the bay and the San Francisco skyline. It was clear skies and the perfect day to enjoy some delicious seafood and light wine. We were greeted with friendly service that was very accommodating and quick to provide what we needed before we even asked. I ordered the lobster roll with a spring salad side. The salad was fresh with a tasty, light, vinaigrette dressing. The lobster roll on the other hand I was disappointed unfortunately. There wasn't nearly enough meat and the bread was stale, STALE. For a $28 lobster roll I expected much more. My wife ordered the crab cake sandwich which was really tasty (wish I ordered that instead). Desert was the carrot cake and banana bites. The carrot cake was dry which was disappointing. The banana bites were AMAZING! The coconut crust of the deep fried bananas was amazing and went so well with the crushed macadamia, toasted coconut, and Carmel ice cream. We came here on a Tuesday, as a returning customer. Ordered the calamari and it came severely overdone and burnt so we asked our gracious waitress who was kind enough to send it back and order the crab instead. Everything was great we were enjoying our drinks when out of the blue someone comes to our table with another calamari order and we explain to them we didn't order that we send back our order and got the crab cocktail instead. In 2 minutes there was a elder gentleman by the name of Rick who happens to be the manager (who put him in charge?) at our table basically yelling at our for wasting food and how we didn't know what crispy calamari was- the audacity I tell you. I think Rick needs to retire because he was crabbier than our crab cocktail. Anyway the waitress was so sweet and accommodating she even know how outrageous his behavior was the rest of the tables around us were appalled. The Fish and chips are terrible.... little fish with exploded breading that is not edible and the fish felt like sawdust without any taste. The Caesars salad was drenched in sauce, felt heavy and not pleasant. We asked for some house bread to accompany our drinks since food took longer than expected, but bread was not delivered. After dinner when we requested the bread again to change the garlicky taste from the fish tacos, it was delivered but while it was warmed, it must have been a week old... Amazing how one person can affect a restaurant experience. The first person (man) we met at the check-in podium was so sour that we were made grumpy too by him, in fact angry. Additionally, his staff appeared affected as well as the humor in the whole restaurant was very poor and subsequently the service suffered as well. We were walking the Sausalito waterfront recently and loving the views, and we took a chance on an early-dish lunch at The Trident. I'm glad we did, because luckily they had an open table for us on the outside deck,... but then, within a short time, it got very well-attended (i.e. "busy"). Next time, for sure, I'll reserve a table ahead of time (whew!). The Trident deck-dining experience depends, or course, on the weather. That day it was sunny, warm-ish (as warmish as Sausalito-by-the-Bay gets) and only the suggestion of a breeze so, in short (too late!), it was picture perfect! They have clear wind screens, for comfort, and bay visibility. As Marinites we forget sometimes to soak up the local color, and touristy Sausalito and The Trident are long-standing Bay Area mainstays that we easily overlook. Sometimes we have to remember to enjoy being "tourists" in our own backyard, so we see how wonderful we have it here, as the visitors do. The food was good, we shared the amply sized Caesar Salad, with local Dungeness Crab and an order of Crab Cakes (one can Never have enough Crab!) They were both delicious, and perfect for Bay-side lunch. I splurged on a Lobster Roll, which did not disappoint. And, keeping with the the fisherman theme, we ordered the Seafood Linguini, for which we had no expectations of greatness, but boy-oh-boy, were we surprised! It was just perfect! We had some white wines by-the-glass, to round it all out, and an Irish Coffee, in lieu of dessert, to help us soak up the view just a little longer. We arrived without reservations at around 6:the day after Valentine's Day because things are priced normally and there are less people out. The restaurant was empty, maybe 10 tables. The space is very big, and we counted at least six servers, so 10 tables is more than manageable. I ordered the blood orange Paloma at the bar; I should have asked for a tequila I like instead of letting them use-what tasted like- their well tequila. The bartender was extremely cordial, though. We were seated after 10 minutes, and service came quick, we ordered the Calamari and a side of truffle French fries. The fries were good, and you get a big portion. The calamari was mediocre, unfortunately, but there's just so much you can do with such dish. For entrees, we shared the mixed seafood brochette and the aged New York steak. The brochette was alright, but the rice and steamed vegetables were completely unseasoned, think rice-a-roni with half the seasoning package. Just bland. The steak was stringy and was mostly fat. The entire meal was a waste of money. I had to wash it down with a Piña colada which was actually pretty good, again, kudos to the bartender. Even the fantasy cheesecake we had for dessert was nothing special. The only highlight was the fact the they are owned by the same people that own The Buena Vista restaurant in San Francisco and can make great Irish coffees. I came here for dinner with my family as I'd never been to Sausalito before, and have heard that it was beautiful. Unfortunately, as it was storming (a rare sight), outdoor seating was closed. - appetizers - (3/5) calamari - the aioli has a super strong ranch taste, and the squid is much less crunchy than expected. felt really oily but the bell peppers help mellow it out (2/5) the bread - they originally brought us very cold and clearly stale bread, until we specifically asked for them to get a new bunch of it. The butter looked as though it'd be a bit fancy as it was piped into the container but it was just plain unsalted butter (which was unsatisfying because the bread itself wasn't good quality either). - sides - (3/5) salmon tartare - I normally get tuna tartare so I was excited to see what they would do with the salmon. The salmon has a very "clean" taste, without any fishiness, but also it lacked much fat content so while it was smooth, there wasn't that much flavor. That'd be fine, but because the cabbage itself was essentially unseasoned, the saltiness of the crackers just took over the taste of the fish and ended up overshadowing it. There was a very slight herbal taste as the salmon was combined with some herbs, but overall the taste itself was just ok. Texture-wise there was a lot going on -- almost too much. The chips were extremely crunchy, which in the end made it hard to hold because it would just crumble on first bite. (2/5) deviled eggs (caviar) - Basically overwhelmed by mustard and it's hard to taste the caviar at all. The whites aren't too rubbery which is nice but mot much other taste as the greens don't add any texture because they're so limp and it honestly tasted better with the cabbage. It looks cute but is pretty average. - mains - (4/5) grilled mixed seafood brochette - the crust on salmon is quite crunchy and hard, so much that i had to second guess that there wasn't still the salmon skin on it! the scallop almost matched how good the salmon was, and despite not liking scallop normally, it left me with a really warm feeling. the sweetness of the scallop really shines here but is contrasted with the intentional saltiness that they put on it. that being said, the shrimp was the definite bad apple hin this bunch, and was tough and with very little shell textures. the other parts of the dish were just alright -- the rice was pretty much overwhelmed by the taste of mushrooms, and personally wasn't a fan of how hard/round the grain was. (4/5) pan seared jumbo sea scallops - the grain is a risotto rather than a rice, and was a bit too mushy (kind of like overcooked white rice) for my liking. that being said, the preparation of the scallops was superior over the grilled scallops, as when you bite into the scallop, it squishes so far that you bite through the width of the scallop, but it's also still so bouncy that it doesn't tear apart when you give it a hard bite. as for the accompanying sauce, it had a lot of variation due to the many chunks of tomato in it, which kept it less so of a sauce and a little bit more "part of the dish." (1/5) crab louie - the entire dish really lacks flavor, and is essentially a "mix-it-yourself" salad. i think that they were depending on whatever you chose for the "main," as you can choose between several options, to carry the dish itself. However, because the crab meat is not seasoned and only contributes texture (and the feeling of bougie-ness), the dish ended up being very bland and while there was a light flavor of crab, the salad dressing wasn't able to help carry the rest of the dish. the overall taste was almost to the point of tasting like a plain salad. While this place does look very high class and aesthetics-wise, meets the expectation, it is a classic case of the food not necessarily living up to the aesthetic. It's clear that the seafood is quite fresh and that's something I can appreciate, but it didn't seem like they really knew how to enhance the flavors or make the freshness the star of the show. In the end, because of that most dishes felt like they were trying to be complex, but falling short and in turn overwhelming the delicate taste of the seafood itself. I might come back here on a sunny day just because it is on the water, but as for the food, it is definitely overpriced and you're paying for an aesthetic. read more

The clam chowder was great, as was the cocktails, and my main entree. I will say that though the one dessert I ordered, the flourless chocolate cake, took so long to come to my table, I thought it might have been homemade. But that was not the case, this came out close to frozen which made it hard to eat. My boyfriend ended up ordering the vanilla creme brûlée which was delicious. Superb location, mediocre food, and horrible service sums it up for our lunch experience at Trident today. It was the first time dining here for all of us and the restaurant was not too busy at lunchtime. We were promptly seated and the orders were placed. We had to ask for bread as it was not served while we were waiting for the food to be prepared. My kale/quinoa salad had pieces of old yellow lettuce instead of green pieces!! Too much feta was used in the salad (and I am a feta cheese lover) and it overtook the taste. Our server never checked on the drinks or food and didn't offer extra water/hot water. Each time we had to ask for something, we could see him standing on the corner and not walking around checking on his customers and their food/drinks. Not sure if this is a tourist spot and that is the reason for lack of attention to quality of food and service. It is a shame that with a million dollar view, the restaurant could not be of a better quality device and food. read more

What a beautiful way to appreciate why we live here in The Bay Area (and specifically Marin!). We made sure to make a reservation, got there early, and we allowed enough time to soak up the sun and vistas, along with a glass of wine (ok, ... bottle). Staff were attentive and helped us chose just the right wine to go with our meal. As for lunch ... We (2) started by sharing their ample, fresh, and crispy cool Cesaer Salad, complete with those perfect little white anchovies (that extra level .....you anchovy lovers know what I mean). However, we were less than impressed with the Clam Chowder, in that is less creamy and more pasty. There was almost no clam flavor, very bland really. For the price the and portion size, it's a "pass" for us. It needs a revamping. What we really loved was the Seafood Linguini. The pasta was cooked perfectly, al dente, as was the seafood! You probably know that seafood, when cooked over-enthusiastically becomes rubbery.... not here! The seafood was tender, every bite. As someone who cooks, I noticed that the seafood items, must have been cooked individually, and to order, as not all seafood items cook at the same rate. WELL DONE! (Insert applause here). The view is stunning! If you have any out of towners visiting, this would be a great view for them to see while you enjoy some good seafood. This is definitely what you're paying for. We ordered calamari and oysters to share, and both were very good. I always love it when hogwash is included with oysters. I got the seafood linguini for dinner, and while it had a lot of seafood in it, it was just decent. Not bad, but nothing to rave about. Service was really great. Everyone knows here you go to Trident for the view not the food. If you do go please get cocktails on the outdoor deck above the water and the salmon. They do make a pretty decent salmon. The skin is somehow flash fried but the salmon just melts over a bed of veggies and a white vegetable based gravy. I did enjoy that dish, not enough to ever go back. Oh and the service was not great.
