A friend who lives in Sac tipped us off to this place while we were cutting through San Francisco on our way north. We didn't feel like dealing with the crowds and chaos of the city, so Sausalito sounded perfect. He was right. We lucked out with a beautiful clear day and had a great view across the water toward SF. The whole area had such a relaxed waterfront vibe. Cute shops, easy to walk around, and far less frantic than the city. Our waitress was funny, friendly, and gave us a great recommendation on the ginger margarita. Delicious. I had the crispy snapper ciabatta sandwich and loved it. Crispy fish, great bread, tangy sauce and just a really satisfying lunch. My wife had the linguine with clams and was equally happy. Yes, you're paying a couple of extra dollars for the location, but in this case the view and setting are worth it. Parking was easy in the large public lot around the corner, which was another pleasant surprise. Overall, great food, great service, and a perfect stop on our way to Northern California. We traveled from the inland East Bay specifically to have a nice lunch at the Barrel House Tavern. Yelp notes the restaurant is dog friendly and we called ahead to confirm that fact. The reception desk is upstairs, so my husband carried our small dog so she wouldn't be on the floor inside the restaurant. He was told to put the dog down and she barked a few times. We were being led through the restaurant to the patio when a gentleman, presumably the manager, told us that they couldn't allow a dog that barks, "even once," to dine with them. I explained that we called ahead to ask if they accommodated dogs, but we'd be happy to leave. We worked in the restaurant and customer service industry for years and completely understand that a barking dog is an unwelcome distraction. When we saw the patio area, we realized that the space wasn't appropriate for a dog to settle. There's a long bar with high stools and only a few regular tables. Our dog is happy to lay under the table out of the server's way once we're seated. There wasn't space to accomplish that if seated at the bar. The couple ahead of us also had a dog but they left as well. I'm certain this establishment has wonderful food given the high ratings. We were quite disappointed that we couldn't verify the reviews. If you have a dog, other than a service animal, I recommend looking for a different restaurant. read more

We visited Barrel House Tavern in Sausalito and had a mixed experience. We started with the butternut squash soup and the clam chowder. The butternut squash soup was smooth, flavorful, and comforting, but the clam chowder was the standout. It had a unique presentation that was different from the traditional version, and honestly, I liked it even better. It was rich, creamy, and absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, our experience with the host did not match the quality of the food. She came across as unprofessional and lacked basic customer service skills. We felt unwelcome and ended up asking to speak with the manager. I'm sure she shared her version of the situation before he came over, but despite that, the manager was polite, professional, and took the time to listen to our concerns. He apologized for the experience and kindly offered our first round of drinks on the house, which we appreciated. His professionalism helped turn around what had started as a disappointing visit. Overall, the food was excellent, especially the clam chowder, and the manager handled the situation well. I hope the restaurant provides additional customer service training for the host, because the kitchen and management deserve better representation. I would still return for the food and the beautiful waterfront atmosphere. read more

Right on the water this place has the perfect vantage point for a meal right out on the water. Whether you're having a full meal or just grabbing some drinks it's a nice spot. They were very very busy when we walked in and we were only able to grab seats at the bar but the bartenders were friendly and the bar was spacious despite it being full. We got some type of tequila based drink but can't remember the name; it gave tequila sunrise vibes though and was very tasty and not too sweet. We ordered a round of shots and boy do they serve heavy; not that I'm complaining in the slightest. We also ordered a dozed oysters and they were the perfect snack for a hot day. read more

Great vibrant place and crowd upscale modern. We will make a reservation next time. Apparently weekends are super busy. This place is so good!! Before we even got there, the staff was awesome and helped up move our reservation back when we ran into a snafu. When we got there, we only had to wait a few minutes before they got our "table with a view" ready. And yes, it was a very nice view. The food was pretty good. We started with half a dozen oysters (quite good) and the shrimp cocktail. The drinks were good as well. For our main plates, they were amazing. My mom said it was one of the best risottos she's had. My Guinness Braised Short Rib was fantastic, even if the puréed yams weren't very exciting to me at first. Our desserts were so good, I loved my S'more's cheesecake. Be aware: the bread pudding does NOT have sauce. My dad assumed there would be (because there always is) and he was disappointed that there wasn't. The butterscotch is baked in. Visited this past Friday for lunch and was lucky to be seated right away despite how busy the place was, we even got a table with a view! The restaurant was beautiful with plenty of space. Our server was delightful, she was attentive but gave us time to chit chat while deciding on food. The food itself was spectacular, and they were very accommodating to our allergies where possible. We were there on a rainy day for early dinner. We enjoyed all that we ordered. And we were served by a very nice, pleasant and lovely lady, named Taylor. Love her! She is so nice and genuine! She truly made our first dining experience at Barrel house much nicer! We had 2 half a dozen oysters. They were the Malpeque oysters. They were clean, crisp and slightly sweet! All of our orders were scrumptious, which are: Tartare Tacos, Korean Wings, BBQ Rib Entree, & pepparoni flatbread pizza. They also have happy hour at the bar at that time. Stopped in for lunch and had a reservation. We got seated right away and was already busy inside. It's got great views and lots of natural light coming in. It's pretty loud inside and hard to hear each other at our table. Service was quite slow from start to finish. It took 2.5 hrs for cocktails, a couple appetizers, and an entree for 4 people. Drinks were good and pretty standard. I tried the burrata tartine appetizer with grilled peaches. It was refreshing and enjoyed it. For my main I tried the snapper sandwich with garlic Parmesan fries. Food tasted good all around. At the end our server mixed up our cards and bill with another table when everything already felt extra slow. Prices were a bit high but I guess the price for decent views in Sausalito. You can't go wrong with sunset, stiffed cocktails and oysters. I think by far they have the best city sunset gazing view on the veranda in Sausalito. Very attentive service and chill vibes. The ahi tuna taco was my favorite. The curry mussels were a bit too creamy for me but hubby loves it. Found this while searching for a lunch spot after hiking in Muir Woods. It ended up being a great find! Basil hibiscus lemonade was delicious, muddled basil tasted fresh and it wasn't too sweet overall. Calamari and shrimp fritti was awesome - big rings of calamari, fried jalapeño and fresh shrimp. Clam chowder was also delicious - lite on the cream, clams still in their shells and huge bowls. My daughter loved the kid's cheeseburger and my son/husband split the steak sandwich and raved about it. I asked them to remove the bread from the panko crusted snapper and they made two Bibb lettuce samis for me that turned out perfect. We visited on Easter Sunday around 2:30pm. The place was packed and busy but we were seated outside quickly, with a nice view and fresh air on this sunny day. The coconut margarita was perfect, had a nice buzz feeling & was strong & sweet. The artichoke dip was so good. Especially since I don't usually eat it. It was blended well with cheese and seasoning. The Baked Dungeness crab stuffed Petrale was different. The Sole was kind of tasteless, everything else on the plate had more flavor. Each item on the plate had its own unique flavor. The broccoli had the best flavor and paired well with the rest. We bit into a few fish bones. Overall I would come back again to try more few items. read more

I want to start with saying that our service was quite good. The host person was accommodating with our request to sit outside and our server, Maxwell, was delightful. That being said, the food was only mediocre. Let's just say I won't be remembering what I had. I ordered the featured special Watermelon Margarita, which was quite disappointing. I was expecting watermelon chunks to be in it (none) and the size to be adequate yet was a very small glass with lots of ice. My friend ordered the sweet potato fries and they definitely won't be memorable. If they had come with a ranch or blue cheese dipping sauce that might've helped. There are excellent views for sure, depending on where you are seated. Another disappointing part - it was advertised on a chalkboard outside of the restaurant their happy hour specials, and that to be honest is what drew us in. However, after speaking to the hostess, we found that you had to sit right at the bar to enjoy any of those prices. One thing we did enjoy, was watching the Sausalito ferry as it came in to port. The street parking for an hour and 45 minutes was $10. Great service and views- meh for the food. read more

We came on a Saturday late afternoon with reservations for 7 people. We still had to wait 20 + minutes after reservation time and the restaurant had a constant flow of people. Service was good but nothing out of the extraordinary. Most of the food was delicious especially the Bbq ribs entree which was fall off the bone good. The snapper sandwich was good but the fish pieces were all different sizes so the fish to bread ratio was off on all 4 snappers we ordered. I did not have the steak sandwich but my aunt said that she should have ordered the snapper sandwich. For appetizers we ordered 3 orders of the Tartare tacos and Artichoke Fundido. I'd definitely order the Artichoke Fundido again. The restaurant is best rated on the Sausalito waterfront for a reason. We weren't seated outside but were blessed with a beautiful view of the surrounding Bay Area. We would definitely come back again. One thing to mention that there was a guaranteed 20% tip since we had more than 6 people in addition to regular tax and a "CA Wage & Benefit Mandate". With all those fees this attributed to 35% of the subtotal cost. All I can say is that hopefully the benefit mandate actually goes to the workers. read more

Came here during the Memorial Day long weekend. Surprisingly, there was no wait, and we got seated immediately. We sat outside with a beautiful ocean view. The waiter was super nice and recommended several dishes that we really enjoyed. We ordered the Wood Fire Oven Pineapple Glazed BBQ Pork Rib, Tartare Taco, and a seafood soup (I forgot the name). I liked all the dishes -- they far exceeded my expectations. The pork rib was incredibly tender, and the seafood was extremely fresh. The shrimp and squid were perfectly cooked, keeping their freshness and tenderness. I will definitely come back and recommend this restaurant to my friends. read more

This place has all the makings for a 5 star experience but they fall short. The hostess is professional and courteous. The ambience is quiet but relaxed with waterfront views. The menu is diverse with a mix of healthy & bar food. The problem is the people presenting the food & drinks don't quite understand what a 5 star experience is. For example: The cocktails are not balanced and the staff didn't understand what that meant. I ordered a Lychee martini and when I informed the waiter it was too strong (because it tasted like straight vodka shots) he asked if I wanted it "diluted." Another example: As food was brought to the table, our appetizer and bread plates started piling up. We quickly ran out of room at our table. But whether it was the gentleman bringing the food or the waiter who consistently checked on us, no one offered to take the extra plates. Ever. These are the details that differentiate a superior experience. We may come back for a bite but it will be just for the view and I won't expect much. read more

What a vibe! Decided to go to Barrel House to end our seafood-adventure day and it did not disappoint. We came during dinnertime on a weekday and were lucky to get outdoor seating. I have to say, if you are fearful of heights don't sit there! I had my bag closed securely, as I would be the person to drop something and have it roll away. I loved the seating. I loved watching the sail boats, and we were even gifted the presence of a seal! While the table itself is very small and you will need to rearrange frequently, it is worth it. This restaurant is located in downtown Sausalito. Street parking is very hard to find, however, there is an affordable parking lot about 1-2 minutes walking distance. You can use the park mobile app to pay. The entrance to the restaurant is very nice. Around this time of the year they had Christmas lights that lit up the space really nicely. It made for some great photo ops. The inside of the restaurant has downstairs and upstairs seating. It's very intimate with low, dim lighting. Sadly we went in the evening, so we weren't able to see much of the ocean view, but I'm sure in the day time it's beautiful to sit by one of the window booths! There's also an outside patio you can sit at with outdoor heaters. The food was delicious. The dinner menu is small, and mostly seafood items, however they do offer a burger, salad, and soup options. I tried the clam chowder. This is not your typical creamy, clam chowder you get in the city. It's made to order and it is more watery. It has actual clams in it! No processed clams over here. Everything in the soup tasted fresh, different but delicious. It was perfect for the cold weather. For my entree I ordered the rainbow salad dish, and added chicken. It was very filling despite it being a salad. We also ordered calamari as an appetizer and it was very delicious. Overall, the vibes are perfect for a night of celebration, a date, or even just to enjoy the views after shopping. The food is fresh and filling, it's pricey so expect to pay a lot. The day after Thanksgiving, our party of 5 dined at Barrel House to enjoy the view of Sausalito. The restaurant is nice, hip and has a welcoming vibe. All the dishes we ordered were good and enjoyed the lobster risotto the most. Service was good and will be back again to try desserts next time we are in the area.
