Our family had such a lovely time here and big kudos to our server who I think was Kristy (Christie?) which we only knew because another fellow patron leaving the restaurant greeted her on his way out, loudly proclaiming Kristy is the best, so clearly she has regulars who adore her! From the get go, our experience was great. We made a reservation for 12:30 but got there early by 12 since our family photo shoot nearby had ended earlier than we thought. We were a larger group, with grandma, grandpa, nephew, kiddo, etc. but they seated us immediately even though we were early. Kristy did a lovely job explaining some items on the menu for us especially when my brother-in-law had questions about what to order. She also kindly corrected us when we ordered spaghetti and pizza for the kids; we almost ordered the full adult portions of those items until she clarified if we wanted the kids' spaghetti and kids' pizza which are actually way better proportioned for kiddos. I ordered a risotto, my husband ordered a rigatoni, my mom ordered a salmon, my brother-in-law a gnudi, can't remember what my sister ordered (lol sorry) and my dad got a pizza. The food was wonderful and well made and delicious! Kristy did apologize that three of our orders didn't come out in time due to a computer error but we were quite patient about it so she comped us free dessert!! I'm not one to post bad reviews on a regular basis. However, last nights experience was one that left me a bit with mixed feelings. In a few ways our families experience was good but in one very particular way it was very disturbing and upsetting. My daughters and I love walking down Sausalito because it is very quiet and has some beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay. My younger daughter wanted to try the restaurant for her birthday that was celebrated this past week so I made a reservation for our family. We checked in and the host was very kind and asked to confirm whose birthday we were there to celebrate. Even though we arrived a little early for the reservation we were still seated promptly and the ambiance was great with nice views throughout the restaurant. After we reviewed the menu our server came by and from the very beginning I felt that she was rushing us a bit. I asked for a little more time to review the menu after giving our drink orders and she literally hung around from us while we looked over the menu. Once we placed our order there was someone else who brought out our drinks and eventually our meals and they were very virtuous and attentive. Shortly after we received our meals another family was seated adjacent to us and the same server was intending to them and I could hear the difference in tone and how they tended to them. They were offered to have the menu explained and they also were offered pairings for the meals and the server made it very obvious that they were receiving complimentary bread before the meal arrived, my family was never given the option of bread nor was it even brought out. After checking in and the host confirming the birthday celebration I assumed that the server would at least acknowledge the situation or offer a desert of some kind but nothing. This review has nothing to do with bread and much less deserts for a birthday, that is not the point. My point is I felt that my family was treated differently by one member of the staff and that soured our experience. The food itself and all the other employees were great. I highly recommend the mushroom soup and I ordered the chicken which was also very good. We all really enjoyed our meals and if it was only for the meals I would be coming back. But I could honestly say that I will not go back anytime soon. Now, some may ask why not complain to the manager or confront the server themselves. I was there to celebrate and not to fight or argue much less complain to get a complementary or reduced meal, I don't need that. Just to conclude, I loved the food and 99% of the staff were great. Poggio has a genuinely authentic Italian feel the moment you walk in. The layout leans traditional, with classic seating and a warm, old-world atmosphere that fits perfectly with Sausalito's charm. The downtown boardwalk view is definitely a highlight - sitting by the windows overlooking the water adds a lot to the experience. Getting to the restroom upstairs going through the hotel with no direction, however, felt like solving a maze. Navigating the upper floors turned into a bit of an adventure on its own, not necessarily negative, but slightly confusing and unexpected. Food-wise, it was decent but not memorable. The pizza was okay, though slightly burned on the bottom, which affected both texture and flavor. Watch out for kids cheese pizza as it comes standard adult size one. For the price point, it felt a bit overpriced for what was delivered. The biggest drawback was the service. It was extremely delayed, and the wait between ordering and receiving food stretched far longer than it should have. Overall, it's a pleasant, character-filled spot with a great location, but the execution didn't quite match the setting. Came here for a company dinner. The restaurant is located right next to the bay. If it wasn't cold and raining you could definitely opt to eat at the outdoor patio seating for a better view. The inside of the restaurant was large and had a large wine selection wall behind the bar as soon as you enter. There is so much seating, but I would definitely say Sunday is the best time to go because it wasn't overly crowded. Definitely good for all group sizes. The service was amazing and so helpful with food suggestions and wine pairings. We had a bunch of appetizers: arancini, fegatini, & the sformatino to name a few. Everything was absolutely delicious but my favorite dish was the gnudi which is essentially spinach gnocchi with beef ragu. This is definitely a MUST try! That was probably the most pillowy soft gnocchi I've had in the Bay Area! The ragu paired with it very well too because it was so tender. For dessert I had the lemon mousse which was a nice refreshing dessert after a heavy meal and I loved how it had pistachios for a nice crunchy texture. My family and I were getting hungry after strolling the charming streets of Sausalito...and we decided to come here to have our late lunch especially there is no wait. At first I didn't expect much, but everything changed after I started looking at the extensive menu and realized this place is serious about the food they serve. We ordered one pizza and a savory custard plus two more pasta dishes. As you can see in the pictures, the presentations were elegant; and the taste of the dishes were so delicious. I was very surprised and enjoyed the flavor and texture of the (cauliflower?) custard, and glad that our friendly waiter recommended it to us! The servers were amazing and despite having no reservations, they were able to accommodate us on a busy night. We got the ravioli and a margarita pizza. Both dishes were decent but I've had better at other places. Pizza could be improved if the ingredients were more "melted" together. It felt like the cheese, sauce and basil were all separate items thrown on bread, there was no cohesiveness. The pasta was fine. It had different textures which was nice. The cheese (ricotta salata) that was placed on top was super good. I wish there was a way to get that cheese in every bite without having to cut the 4 already thin slices into smaller sections. First, I love Sausalito! My handsome fiance and I enjoyed a really amazing breakfast, at Poggio Trattoria. I had the Poggio Scramble with eggs over med, with ham, potatoes, and tst..It was really delicious, my eggs were perfectly cooked..We shared some bacon also. It was delicious, and I need to say it was also cooked perfectly. My guy had the Tosti Mattino, it was a breakfast sando with baked eggs, prosciutto, and mozzarella. It looked good, he ate it all.. I had a latte, I cant remember what his coffee drink was, it was served in a martini glass, strong and cold..He really liked it..I'll show a Pic. Elias was our server and was very polite, and efficient. The restaurant is really nice inside and the seats were so comfy.. When we arrived we were greeted and told to sit wherever we like. After spending the day in Muir Woods and the Sausalito area, we decided to have a bite to eat and saw Poggio. Upon stopping in, we saw the staff hustling and bustling and thought there would be a wait as the restaurant seemed rather busy. To my surprise, we were sat immediately. I ordered the mista salad and a margherita pizza, both of which were really good. I spit the salad with my boyfriend and wish they did a better job splitting it because he had way more than I did. My boyfriend ordered the pork chop, which was not cooked evenly. For a Michelin Star restaurant, I'd expect them to nail the cook on their meat, but alas, there were parts of the meat that were really pink and parts that weren't. The cut of meat was rather thick so it would have been impressive had they cooked it properly. The service was interesting. Out server would come up to the table and would walk away before we could finish what we were saying. I know they were busy but after we were done we sat there for awhile...it was just overall slow and kind of odd. They won their Michelin Star in 2018 so I'm willing to bet things were better then and they're just riding on the coattails of having a Michelin Star. read more

Very Disappointing Experience - Won't Be Back I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience at Poggio was bad enough that it deserves one. Five friends and I tried multiple times (at least 5 calls) just to get someone on the phone to ask about breakfast reservations. When we finally got through, we were told Poggio doesn't take breakfast reservations and to "go on the website." Of course, the website also does not allow breakfast reservations. We called back again and were told, "Just walk in, there will be plenty of tables." So we did. Upon arriving, we politely asked for a round table so we could talk as a group. The waiter who greeted us was immediately rude and dismissive and told us, "Just so you know, you have to order your food from the bar and serve yourself." I asked when that policy started, and he sarcastically and rudely replied, "2003." That is simply not true--we were there about a month ago and were served at the table, like a normal restaurant. His response felt condescending and, frankly, like he just didn't want to serve us. Between the confusing and incorrect information, the poor communication, and the disrespectful attitude, we decided to leave. We walked down the street to Suzette, where we received excellent service and fantastic food--a night-and-day difference. We are a group that holds monthly restaurant meetings, usually with 10 or more people. Poggio has officially lost our business going forward. Plenty of better options in Sausalito. Poggio is no longer one of them. read more

A long time staple and absolute gem of an Italian restaurant. The food has never disappointed. The grilled Octopus Antipaste is delicious. Love the Tartare. Salads are wonderful and fresh. Halibut, salmon, branzino, short ribs ... yes, yes, YES and YES. Service is amazing as well. Staff is like family and very knowledgable. We've come here for Thanksgiving dinner 2 out of the last 3 years and will be back. Oh, and the drinks are great as well - mocktails and cocktails! We went as a group of 8 to celebrate a retirement. The occasion was unbeknownst to the staff but the service was top notch as if they knew. The atmosphere was festive for the holidays. The restaurant is beautiful but so much more so with the decorations. And the food did not disappoint. My halibut with butter beans and spinach was perfectly cooked and flavorful. Excellent Italian Cuisine served both indoor or at open air sidewalk tables with a casual, yet slightly fancy vibe. Tucked away in an inlet just north of the Golden Gate, Sausalito is somewhat of a tourist spot for both locals as well as visitors from far away lands. Here you will find many restaurants, but one of our favorites is Poggio Trattoria right here on the main drag just across the street from the town square and ferry dock. Note that if you do get seated at the tables outside of the front entry, the help can be a little hard to track down. Out of sight, out of mind, perhaps.. Still friendly and courteous when you do find them though.. Most importantly, every dish we had here was delightful, from beginning with our Prosciutto appetizer, to a giant seared scallop, followed by our mains which included a wood-fired Margherita Pizza, Pappardelle, and the Seafood Risotto. All were delicious and on point. Portions are reasonably sized, so that you can try out more.. YUM.. we look forward to returning here soon! Getting Here: Parking can always be a little tight, but there are public parking lots across the street once you get a block away from the small downtown. Taking the Ferry Boat here would be my first choice, as you get a scenic relaxing boat ride across the Golden Gate, and will be totally chill by the time you get to the restaurant! The Anatra- Confit duck leg, baby kale, endive, apples, pistachios, pickled onion & aceto balsamico. A very clean, lite, nutrient packed salad. That confit duck leg!! Let me say it again.... That confit duck leg was the most tender piece of duck I've had to date. The glutton in me wanted to get another to go. It was that stellar. This was the first item that stood out the most to me. Well, the servers are very nice. The location is perfect and the views are wonderful. The interior is very comforting. However, their menus do not break out allergens. I am when I told our server that I had to eat gluten-free. He said that he would go to the kitchen and find out what was safe. He came back and said that I could have octopus or veal as an entrée. Yuk. I had yet had another salad for dinner. They could definitely benefit from listing allergens on their menu. We live in Marin so we understand how Sausalito is very touristy but, not the place to go for a nice meal, special occasion thats for sure. The interior is warm and welcoming but thats about it. If you don't let your server know you want to wait a bit between your appetizer and main dish, your entree will come out right away and you will be in and out of there is 45 minutes top. Nice vibe! We came here without reservation. Since we are a large group, we waited 30mins to be seated. Another 20 mins to take our orders. I love their pizzas and costata! I asked the server for recommendation for pasta. He recommended Gnudi. Tried it for the first time. Sad to say, it's just not for me. It's mushy and green. It costs me $30 and i was not able to enjoy nor eat it. Had Tiramisu for dessert. 3 stars. I should've had pannacotta instead. Poggio's is a Sausalito staple. Great for drinks at the bar with friends, nice lunch in their outdoor bistro seating, or a fancier dinner for a celebration. Our table took 20 minutes longer than our reservation time, so we got cocktails at the bar (the martinis are great). When we finally sat down in a back of the room booth, it was still quite loud, so just a note for your audience. We got the wood fired flatbread which is like thin crust pizza dough that's crispy in the edges, covered in oil and garlic. Simple but delicious. For appetizers, the burrata with pesto was large, and the pesto alone was amazing. The prosciutto and melon (it was honeydew) was as expected but still good. For mains, the risotto was exceptional, full of flavor and tons of seafood. The pappardelle pasta dish was decadent with a quail ragu (and an impressive amount of meat). The spaghetti alla amatriciana was simple, but well executed with a good portion of sauce. For the non-pasta lovers, the short rib was fantastic with the creamiest polenta. It was a little strange that a large (cooked) onion was just added to the dish, but good nonetheless. Wrapping up with dessert, the budino is the chocolate lava cake of your dreams. Even non-chocolate lovers will appreciate it. If you do have allergies, they're great about confirming with the kitchen since some ingredients aren't listed on the menu. Biggest highlight of the night was our waiter Jamsheed. He was attentive, thoughtful, helpful, and did his job with flare. Will definitely asked for him next time we come! read more

A major disappointment. The only saving grace was the pleasant waitress. First, my Old Fashioned tasted like water with hardly any bourbon. The rim tasted salted! Great for a Margarita but not on an Old Fashioned! You had to have a magnifying glass to find the Ahi Tuna "appetizer."The Gem Salad was drenched in dressing and overloaded with cheese and whatever. The crab fettuccini could have been used to caulk my bathtub, 4 of us ordered it and none of us finished it. The chocolate cake had the consistency of mud and was a challenge to swallow. When we came in they sat us in one of the worst tables, right next to the bar, foot traffic and the TV with the debate on it. We asked to move which they found us a better table. The service was odd, no one ever greeted us, finally one person came up, didn't say hi and asked what we wanted to drink. We had multiple people waiting on us, but no one was really that friendly. The food saved it, but was really under seasoned! We had the prosciutto and melon, octopus and the chicken liver mouse. The appetizers were all phenomenal, nothing bad to say about any of it. The chicken liver really stole the show! It was so rush and flavorful and hit all the notes, good acid and fruit. For entree we had the 3 person porter house steak and it was cooked to perfection! It just needed salt like a lot of salt as did the mashed potatoes and spinach. Once salted, it was delicious and really I can't understate how well they cooked it. We requested rare to medium-rare. For dessert my mom had chocolate cake, which they put a candle in and offered to sing, which we liked, because my mom would not have liked it. Her cake was good, but too rich for me. This was one of the more affordable Italian spots I've come across in the Bay Area. Given the stylish ambiance, I expected it to be on the pricier side, but we were pleasantly surprised--our bill came out to around $110 for two people, including tax and tip. We shared the Verdure pizza, rigatoni, and two glasses of chardonnay--all flavorful and well-prepared. The service was a bit average, but to be fair, we walked in without a reservation and were still seated promptly. If I find myself commuting to Sausalito from SF again, I'd definitely return. I work part-time setting up A/V equipment for client presentations at restaurants and hotels, and I always have dinner at these venues while these presentations are taking place. In addition, while I'm on-location, I'm always clean and presentable in business-casual clothes, When I arrived at Sausalito's Poggio Trattoria to set up for a presentation, I approached the host working at the restaurant that evening, and I noticed that he was giving me a weird snooty look. He looked pretty strange himself with his unusual haircut, but I don't judge since I actually accept strange and unusual. Anyway, I asked where the presentation was going to be, and he at least did his job and directed me where to go. I still felt very strange about the initial interaction, though, but I also wanted to give the host the benefit of a doubt. I got the presentation room upstairs from the restaurant, and the person working there was actually the polar opposite of the host. He was courteous and very very helpful with me setting up for the presentation. After getting done with the set-up and with meeting the client, I went back downstairs to the restaurant. I checked their posted menu out, and I thought this would be a great place to have dinner while the presentation is going on. I approached the host again (who was once again giving me a strange look), and I asked him where the restrooms were. He then told me in a snooty tone to go back upstairs to use the restrooms there. What? What did he mean by that? Was I not good enough to use the restroom in the restaurant? I was offended, but I thanked him anyway, and I walked out. I went back upstairs and used the restroom there, and then I quickly went into the presentation room to double check everything. The person upstairs was once again very courteous and helpful. I went back downstairs, and I decided to have dinner elsewhere primarily because of how I was treated by the host. I will never know how good Poggio Trattoria's food is because of him. Was how I was treated because I'm a person of color? Was it because of my job being beneath the host? I'll never know, and I didn't even care to find out. I could never support a business with people like him working there. However, it was a still beautiful evening in Sausalito, and I took a nice walk in this fine little city. I ended up having dinner at Napa Valley Burger Company and a little dessert at Sausalito Sweets. The people at both venues were amazing, and so was the food. So, about the 2-star rating... it's primarily because of this restaurant's snooty host. He's a liability to this establishment. But I would've given this place 1 star of it weren't for the person working upstairs. He was very helpful and courteous, and he deserves a promotion. My two centavos. read more

The food was excellent and the service was excellent. I usually don't like to sit outside but we did and I am converted! I like to sit outside! It was so much fun! The weather was perfect and the people and cars passing were entertaining! We devoured the calamari! Oak grilled to perfection with flavorful dressings. My daughter ordered spaghetti...I tasted it and it was cooked too perfection! I ordered the fig pizza and really enjoyed it; the crust was as delicious as the toppings. Poggio's treated me to dessert for my birthday, our wonderful waiter sang Happy Birthday. I ordered decaf affogato which was sinfully delicious vanilla gelato with candied orange and toasted sliced almonds. My daughter ordered the lemon mousse with meringue and pistachios and I thought it was very delicious. Love this restaurant! When an old friend contacted me to go to dinner, I chose this place. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about wines and the menu. She offered several different pairings. I had a simple pizza margharita that had the most delicious cheese on it. I had a nice glass of pinot grigio that went well. My friend had the seared halibut that looked amazing. We finished it off with an affogato and tiramisu accompanied by expresso. It was a delicious and we were in a beautiful restaurant. Poggio Trattoria - Wonderful birthday lunch with my brother - Italian Near Me - Sausalito, California

Food is descent, but we felt rushed and eventually were asked toea e so they could make room for other guests.

A birthday lunch with friends. I got there 30 minutes late owing to Sausalito being in full tourist capacity making parking a nightmare. Our server was understanding of the delay and and cocktails had already been ordered. With a Negroni, Aperol spritzes and a glass of vermentino at the ready, we settled in for an excellent lunch! We shared the corn sformatino (very rich and deliciously corny) and the Anatra salad (perfectly confited duck leg, not dry at all). Next, a bottle of unoaked Pelllino chardonnay and entrees. We had the spinach gnudi w/beef ragu which was rich and flavorful. Our grilled salmon was very good, the seared halibut equally so (Impressed that our server asked how well we wanted the fish cooked!) Finally, the pork osso bucco. It was a large and satisfying portion, two "ossos" with delicious polenta and veg. Lastly, we shared the apple crostata which was ok, (the crust was a little thick) and the tiramisu, which was excellent. Throughout the meal, our server (Brad or Bret?) was "on it;" being there when we needed him, offering a sample of the wine we were choosing, and of course, the candle in the tiramisu (he overheard my friends mentioning my BD). Why has it taken me this long to give my favorite Marin restaurant 5 stars?!? Impeccable service, delicious, creative , seasonal Italian cuisine and the most inviting setting. I always know it's going to be a good night when I'm greeted by Matt and served by Daniella. Special shout out to Amy Svendberg, general manager, who has kept Poggio going strong for a couple of decades. read more
