Outside seating

This is a really cool restaurant tucked away behind a building at Tam Junction. Mostly outdoor seating, but it is comfortable and protected with all wooden chairs. I know they have a location in San Francisco as well. The food is very local with a lot of fish served pub style with a lot of Latin choices. Big menu with a lot of options. One thing that I thought was unusual, but turned out to be really good and hard to stop eating was ceviche and chips, but almost a Korean style with lots of sesame oil. Unusual but good. This place on a Wednesday night was pretty full. You could tell a lot of locals go there but it's also in the corridor where tourist might stop by on the way to Mount Tam or the beach. This is definitely worth going to. I recommend it. I did not take any pictures of the food sorry.

Fish and chips (2 pc, rockfish), 19.00

Built up an appetite with a hike, so we could try a few things here. The seafood plate with poke was solid. Fish and chips: the rockfish (daily fish) was to die for! Nicely crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside. However, the fries that came with it were some of the blandest we've ever had. Fish tacos were delish! They are appropriately overloaded for their price point; you'll need to use a fork. The aqua frescas looked refreshing but were also quite lacking in sweetness and flavor (coming from someone who doesn't like things too sweet). Sunday 3pm had a ~30 min wait for outdoor seating, or no wait for indoor table (which we chose). Single bathroom has a line. You order food outside and pay, then they bring the food to you. Self serve water. Seating can feel tight or close to others. Due to the location, drivers more aggressive than SF, and poor parking, accessing the parking lot can be a bit tricky. Despite the bad locale impression, service was great and everyone was very nice.

We came on a really nice day, so it was pretty busy, but the staff still managed to accommodate us quickly, which was great. You order at the counter and they bring the food out to your table. We shared the ceviche, fish tacos, and fish and chips. The ceviche was good and fresh, but for the price, I was expecting a bit more in terms of portion size. The fish was crispy with a great ratio of breading and finished with a nice touch of sea salt. The fries had good seasoning, though I wish they were a little more crispy. The tacos were also solid, with fresh toppings and good flavor. We paired everything with a few beers from the tap, and they have a nice range of options to choose from. Overall, it's a great spot with a cute outdoor space, perfect for a sunny, casual meal.

This one has been on our list for a while! We stopped by over the weekend around 2pm ish and there was a 50min - 1hr wait. Of course, the weather was gorgeous, so we expected a wait, but what surprised us was when we asked the server taking our order if it was always busy like this, his response was "oh, actually this is pretty chill compare to how it usually is!". Wowza. So come prepared because it's popular! And why wouldn't it be? There's plenty of seating outside, the staff is friendly and welcoming and the food is great! We ordered the poke appetizer to share, the kids got the kids' fish plate, my husband got the ahi tuna burger (recommended by the guy taking our order), I got a fish plate, and we ordered a plate of fish and chips for the table. The fish and oysters were super fresh! The batter on the fish and chips were perfection and the fries had a nice seasoning on them. The poke and the sides for my fish were just ok. The beans were a bit lacking in flavor. Overall, I'd definitely come back!

Fish tacos and fish and chips

Came here after a hike at Mt Tam and it was an estimated 90 minute wait. We ended up getting seating earlier than that which was great cause we were hungry lol. You are seated at a table then order at the counter and they will bring out your order. It was super busy on a Sunday afternoon. The food itself was super fresh. We ordered oysters, fish and chips, and fish tacos. Everything was so good, however I did think the fish lacked seasoning. I found myself using the hot sauce to counteract the lack of flavor. But the fries were seasoned perfect and I enjoyed the sauce in the tacos. Overall I give this place a solid 8/10!

#24 of 2026 This is my go-to for fresh grilled fish, so good!!!! My husband and I have only gotten the fish plates, never tried the tacos or burritos but I'm sure they're also excellent. I love their chips, it's the thick and crispy kinds I like. But I think it was so hard that it actually chipped my husband's tooth lols I think they have a good selection of beers on tap, this time I tried the white wine (Sauvignon??), it was nice! We love coming here on a weekday when there's no line bc the lines can be long which I witnessed over MLK weekend. Hard pass. Servers were really nice, there was a misunderstanding where the cashier thought I wanted 3 bowls but I only wanted 2 so the 3rd was refunded immediately. I like how there's an indoor/outdoor space but during the winter it does feel cold so make sure to bundle up if you're visiting Nov-Feb. Highly recommend this spot!

Kid's fish and chips, guac, fish sandwich

Nice fish spot with indoor and outdoor seating. You pick a table and order outside at the counter. We got the fish and chips, guac, and the grilled fish sandwich. The guac was super mild and creamy. I personally prefer chunky and spicy but my mom liked it. Everything was cooked well and served quickly. The service was professional and friendly. The outside looked gorgeous but when we went, a Thursday at around lunchtime, all the seats were taken! I saw others at the next table with burritos and I'll definitely try that next time. They were huge! :)

It's a cozy seafood Mexican-American restaurant with full bar. Food is fresh with daily market catch. Grill of the day sandwich was fresh, hot and delicious. Tortilla was perfectly crispy and not oily. Usually busy and long wait in prime times. Once you're seated, you need to go to another line to order food. No table service. Service is relatively quick after you're seated and ordered . Limited indoor tables. Patio seating are heated and vast. Limited parking in the plaza but spots available in other close by plaza. Accessible with flat entry and wide pathways. Will come back for the sandwiches!

Fantastic food and such a cute, casual lunch spot with great outdoor seating. They were very accommodating to my allium allergy and have solid vegan options. I had the fresh corn tortillas with avocado and cabbage slaw. Everything tasted amazing, and the tortillas were some of the best I've ever had, clearly freshly made. High-quality food all around and a great casual stop. Just a heads up--it gets busy on weekends and parking can be limited!

We stopped by Hook Fish in Mill Valley after a day of hiking in Mt. Tam and it was bustling on a Sunday night. We put our name down and waited in our car for about 45 minutes for an inside table. There are outdoor picnic benches in the beer garden out back that are first come first serve, but it was a chilly December night so we opted to wait for indoor seating. When our table was ready, we took our number tag to reserve the table and ordered our food at the counter outside. The indoor bar area was warm and well lit, and the outdoor deck was very cute with string lights and a lively atmosphere. Definitely a great place to come hang out and have a beer. One minor inconvenience occurred when the staff forgot about one of our orders, but they were nice about it and made the food quickly when we brought it to their attention, so I won't dock a star. Grilled albacore tuna plate: Great portions of fish, veggies, rice, and beans. Everything tasted great after our hikes and the sauce/salsa that came with it was yummy. Grilled albacore tuna burritos: Same as the plate but wrapped in a big tortilla. Poke plate: Tried a little piece and the fish was good, but nothing too special in my opinion.

Ceviche

I was super excited to try this place considering all of the hype but it did not meet expectations. We waited about an hour for a table. Stopped by the PizzaHacker for a drink next door while waiting (and honestly had a much better time there, will have to go back). After getting a table, you have to go up to respective counters for food and drinks. They have a catch of the day (rockfish in our case) and a few other locally caught options for an up charge. Ordered ceviche, a couple oysters, tacos with fried rockfish, and a burrito with lingcod per cashier recommendation. Ceviche came with oranges in it which made it pretty sweet overall. Not for me. Was missing the acidic punch a typical ceviche offers. Oysters were good! Clean taste with nice mignonette. Tacos and burrito were fresh with lots of bright slaw but way too bland. None of the fish tasted seasoned. Rice and beans in the burrito also lacked salt. One of my tacos was randomly missing the avocado slice. They had a habanero carrot sauce available at the table. Sounded exciting. Was not. Basically orange colored vinegar with a hint of spice. Got a few sours but none were sour and instead juicy fruit types. Nothing too exciting in our option. Food is brought out by folks in the kitchen and they run off speedily. Hard to get help if you need something. Note: We went on a Saturday afternoon and it was full of families and dogs. Typical for a beer garden but good to keep in mind. No knock on the restaurant but there were some leash aggressive and nippy dogs. More on owners for not recognizing their pets are stressed. Beware!

Best fish and chips in the area, as far as I'm concerned. Hook Fish is a good casual spot with more outdoor than indoor dining, so it's a place we tend to visit during good weather, which fortunately Mill Valley has plenty of. Favorite orders for us include their fish (add your preferred fresh caught fish) with nice salt flake alongside chips (fries), fresh poke with house-made tortilla chips, and grilled fish tacos with a creamy slaw with pepitas for texture and crunch. Their curated selection of excellent NA drinks & lemonades, wine, bottled and beer on tap, and local cider are a welcome addition to a meal here.

Really enjoyed their fresh fish and ambiance! Everything was so fresh and allows you to really get to taste the fish and let the seafood shine. Love this place!

Any crab salad sandwiches?

Will note the good suggestion but none available now. Thanks

Why do food orders take so long to prepare on the wkends?

We try to keep the food wait time under 30 mins even when slammed, and usually under 20, but sometimes the wait can back up due to unexpected bottlenecks. Just to clarify, did you mean they take longer on weekends or week days? Thanks

Do you take reservations?

They don't take reservations.

What is the wait usually like on a nice Saturday at 5p?

30 mins, but its very weather dependent. If not so nice, there might be a short or no wait as thats the early side of the dinner rush. But if its a really nice day, people come at all hours and the wait could be 30-45mins. By 6 the wait will… Read more

What I received was just meat and cheese, no onions, no cilantro, nothing else. Mistakes happen, so I walked back up to the counter to point it out. Instead of a quick fix, the situation turned into an argument between the front staff and the kitchen about whether the taco had been made correctly. I stepped in to clarify and explained that I had literally just shown the taco to the cashier. At that point, I was essentially told they couldn't verify it because I hadn't physically handed it back to them, while the kitchen insisted it had been made with onions and cilantro. It got awkward fast. Rather than simply remaking the taco, the whole exchange felt like I was being accused of making it up over a $9 order. At that point, I decided to leave. It's not about the taco, it's about how the situation was handled. If there's an issue, just fix it and move on. Turning it into a debate with the customer is not the move. They really need to do better on basic customer service.

I came around 4:30pm, and the restaurant was empty, so we were seated immediately. Service was quick and efficient. I did hear a lot of the loud conversation between the two girls at the register about Instagram and TikTok.... I ordered the super burrito, which was nicely toasted, but overall it was just okay. It wasn't bad, but it didn't stand out either. There was no real spice or bold flavor, and I couldn't quite figure out what it was missing. The horchata was pretty basic. It tasted more like plain milk with cinnamon sprinkled on top rather than the richer, more flavorful horchata you'd expect. I also tried the Baja fish tacos, which were disappointing. The fish wasn't crispy enough and lacked flavor. The tortilla was easily breaking apart. It's like they took the tortilla straight out of the bag because it was cold and didn't look cooked. It came with tortilla chips that were over-fried and borderline burnt, though I wasn't sure if that was intentional. Another reason this ended up being a lower rating for me is the owner's response to feedback. As you can see in other reviews, Tommy tends to get very defensive when customers leave criticism, which I found pretty unprofessional. After I posted my review, he actually messaged me directly (see screenshot), which was honestly off-putting. Yelp is meant to be a space for customers to share their honest experiences, whether positive or negative, and responding in that way doesn't reflect well on the business. I also live in San Francisco, where there's no shortage of authentic and high-quality Mexican food, so I stand by my opinion. Being told my palate isn't "on point" felt dismissive rather than constructive. If anything, I'd just caution others that if you leave feedback here, be prepared for a defensive response from ownership, which may impact your overall experience beyond just the food. Overall, I was surprised given the strong reviews. The meal felt pretty bland across the board, and unfortunately it didn't live up to the hype. Also the owner's attitude doesn't deserve any business. After the owners negative and defensive responses, I know I won't come back.

Because of that, my experience may be influenced by expecting a bit higher quality, especially given the other food options in the area The Cantina in Mill Valley is a pretty standard Mexican spot with a Tex-Mex lean. I usually enjoy this style of food; I was a big fan of places like El Torito in SoCal, but this one didn't quite land for me. We ordered two burritos. The portions were generous, but the flavors were very mild. I love bold, spicy food, and these were lacking seasoning in my opinion. I ended up taking half home and adding avocado, lemon, and salsa from my own kitchen to give it the punch it was missing. We also tried the queso fundido, which was interesting. I hadn't had it prepared quite like that before, and it definitely leaned more Tex-Mex. It wasn't bad, just different from what I expected. Unfortunately, the service was a letdown as well. I had to find menus myself, and the only ones available at the bar were happy hour menus. Later, the server told us that happy hour isn't honored on holidays, which was disappointing. If that's the case, those menus shouldn't be out at all--it sets expectations that weren't met. Overall, if you're looking for a basic Tex-Mex spot and aren't big on spice, this might work for you. For me, between the bland food and the service issues, it's not a place I'd rush back to.
