I've lived here more than 10 years and have been going here regularly because my kids liked it. It was mid years ago. But then they just started going downhill in terms of taste. Terrible customer service. They got my take out order wrong and when I called to figure out how to fix it, they put me on hold for over 15 minutes. When I finally got through and asked for the manager, she rudely interrupted me when I tried to express my frustration. She did apologize at first, but then took the time to call me back about 20 minutes later to say I was wrong and that my order was in fact prepared correctly. It was definitely not. I had the worst tacos I've ever had here. I ordered the chicken tacos and they were bland. The tortillas were overpowering in flavor, and not a good flavor. They tasted bitter. The chicken was dry and had zero flavor. There were more tomatos than chicken and they had no flavor. I couldn't taste the onions. No smiles on any of the staff. read more

This place could have some better service considering the price of the food the service could be better improved, the salsa and chips are good but the meat quality for how much it is can be better quality considering Mill Valley has a ton of local ranchers in the area that can really be better. The staff is great, it might be helpful to ask about patrons' food allergies before serving food. Most people that go to this restaurant are tired of the hype and want a no nonesense Mexican restaurant so they can really improve on quality service to start so consumers dont write sad reviews like this on yelp. I hope the next time, it is a different status on the review and the cashier can at least ask how the customer would like their food made or at the very least if they need to know about any allergies. The guys in the back kitchen work hard so that will make their jobs easier. Maybe everyone will be in a better mood if this happens. Happy dining! I've been going to Grilly's for 28 years at this point if not longer. So today was a sad day for me when I can't go back there ever again. I don't usually write reviews even when things are bad but I have to say something after my interaction this evening. I've had issues with forgetting things in my burrito over the years not the end of the world, for the most part they make it right when I tell them. Overall I have always loved Grilly's and am saddened by the behavior of their manager tonight. Within the last 6 months I've had a few issues with them closing early. Multiple times planning dinner for my family I have driven up to find it closed before the hours posted. Their posted hours were 9pm, I told him that and he time me I was wrong. Apparently it was changed just not on their door. I showed him on his door and he was dumbfounded. So I had come in around 7:50pm one evening and they said they were closed because they were slow. Not the best business model if you ask me if you actually want people to plan to have dinner at your establishment. So I believe their hours are 8:30pm. Again multiple times they have closed early. Once at 7:40pm and again at 7:30pm. I brought it up with the manager and he said they just could not justify staying open. I don't think this is a good business model but it is what it is. I don't care, I accept whatever they want to do that's their prerogative. I just don't go as often do to the inconsistent hours, I typically call first now. I came tonight at 7:30pm saw the manager they were open and told him I was happy to catch them before they were closed. He told me they never close early. Told me he has cameras. I told him I've been there and it was closed early. Ready to order and move on. He asked me what day he had cameras and I told him I didn't write it down in my calendar but it's been a few times. He straight called me a liar to my face. Said don't lie to me. Told be to be a man and not to lie. Wow... I'm not sure what was going on in his day that he talked to anyone this way but I'll just say no one is going to put up with being called a liar from a manager of a restaurant. This guy was not there when they closed early and I didn't mention it again after the first time. This review is to the owner, just in case you actually want to know how your partner is behaving at your business. You got a guy in the hospitality business that has no business being in the hospitality business anymore. I own a business and I would never call someone a liar even if I thought it. Sad day for me, but I won't be called a liar by a guy who wasn't even there. Treat people like you would want to be treated and for the record I don't have the energy or time to lie about such things. I'm not entitled and I accept their hours or whatever they want to do. But don't call me a liar or anyone else. Especially when you don't know one way or the other. Assumptions make an fool. read more

4 years later, I came back today to get nachos. I had a pretty bad experience 4 years ago, and didn't come back but today I thought might as well give them a chance again. I go around 7 and ordered a plate of nachos, no meat vegetarian. It was awful. The cheese wasn't even melted on, my nachos cost $18 dollars. INSANE for a small plate of nachos no meat. They jacked the price up, and it's not even good. The cheese was half melted, and it didn't taste good at all. I will stick with not coming back. Save your money and go to a better place that won't charge you almost $20 for a small plate of nachos that was cold. read more

It's been many years since I've been to Grilly's. It was much better than I remember it being. I had two (street - don't think they have crispy) tacos: pork and chicken. Both meats were well seasoned. Sometimes when you get a chicken taco at a Mexican place, they use barely seasoned chicken. This was good. Each taco was wrapped in two corn tortillas. This must be the one of the most reasonably priced restaurants in Mill Valley. I can see why they've been around so long. In my quest to be more environmentally conscious, it is good to see that they put out metal flatware and brown napkins made from what appears to be recycled paper. I hope to return soon. read more

They're doing so well w safety, serving the community during a pandemic probably for low wages but the chicken enchiladas are always delicious comfort food. Grilly's is a supporter of the local Mill Valley community. There is a wall of kid's soccer team sponsorships and a dining room full of colorful communal tables covered in celebratory Mexican oilcloth and a wall covered in kids-level chalkboards. This is a spot to take kids on those nights when making dinner at home seems daunting. Every community needs its alternative-to-cooking spots, and Grilly's fits that mold. It took us a while to find this place once the Mexican food cravings finally set in, because with their name we were picturing a diner, and not Mexican food. My shrimp burrito included very small shrimp (I prefer the big shrimp version) and giant grilled onions. It was a very soupy, fall apart burrito that was bland and ultimately disappointing. There was a lukewarm thumbs-up from my partner in crime for the grilled chicken burrito, so maybe I'll try that next time. The watermelon aqua fresca and horchata were legit, and the best of what we ordered. In all, a locals spot with a-ok Mexican food, geared to hungry families on this side of the bridge. read more

Over the past 8 years since I have lived here, I have literally spent THOUSANDS of dollars here (I wouldn't patronize the place, but when you have two young kids, it's pretty much what you do in this town). My kids love the bean rice and cheese burritos, and as comfort food, I don't mind them either. And their chicken lime tortilla soup is very good. For healthier options the shrimp taco salad works. So why the one star? Recent interactions. One day I went in after calling in my order and they gave me my bag of food. I quickly looked in it and it wasn't my order. "Yes it is," insisted either the owner or manager; not sure which this one is but he is the grumpy guy that works there and is very officious. He is ALWAYS short with me, even rude, and god forbid you don't spit out whether you want black beans or pinto beans fast enough for his taste. Anyway...I said, "no, this kiddie burrito says 'steak,'" and, pointing to my child who does NOT like steak, I said "he didn't order that. He ordered beans, rice and cheese." "That is beans rice and cheese," says Grumpy. "So I am supposed to ignore this sticker and assume it is beans rice and cheese," I ask? "And I ordered a small salad and this is a large. And a burrito is missing." After much harrumphing, Grumpy rips the tag off the bag and thrusts another in my face. No apology. The customer was never right in this instance, and I was right. Last night I went in to pick up my regular order and Grumpy says, "$59.65." I said, "Wow that seems expensive. I ordered a shrimp taco salad, a chicken grande burrito, a soup and a kids bean rice and cheese." He answers, "this is what you ordered. Steak burrito, enchilada..." I said, "No, that isn't my order." I repeat my order. He rolls his eyes. Says "29.25," and again the customer isn't right. "We'll tell you when the order is ready." I wait. And wait. I actually see my order being packed up because my son has to be the only one on a 98 degree day to order hot soup and since I pick up there SO OFTEN, the guy packing the food in the pick up station points at me and gestures me to come over, because he recognizes me (and I am always very friendly to everyone who works there.) I say my last name. Then Grumpy literally jogs over. "He's doing something else. You wait there. That is not yours. WE WILL TELL YOU WHEN IT IS READY." He snatches the bag from the pick up guy and takes it away. I say somewhat loudly because now I am pissed off, "I'm sorry but he GESTURED to me! I have been waiting but he asked me to come over!" This is literally the only time I have ever had attitude in this place because I believe in being kind. Thirty seconds later, Grumpy shouts out my name and hands me THE SAME BAG. In truth, this place would get 2 1-2 to 3 stars on a regular day. But I am sick of being treated like dirt by this guy. I find it admirable that Grillys donates to local causes like little league, but the face of the business could really use some lessons in hospitality. read more

Food is just OK but the service is awful. The people that work here are largely rude and super apathetic. They could care less about any customer service or even being pleasant. It's too bad. Unfortunately it's one of the few places in town where you can grab a quick burrito to go. I feel held hostage by this place. Unfortunately, it's definitely below average in every respect. Deeply appalled at the customer service at this place, My wife and I came here with high hopes after getting our tire changed from the tire shop next door. The decor is beautiful and the place has a good vibe to it, but while placing our order the gentleman I received more attitude then ever before and so did my wife, we were both asking for options to go into our burrito bowls and each time we asked a he got louder and more aggressive as in to hurry us up without answering any options to what we could have. I don't usually write reviews but felt I had to in this case. Everyone is quick to ask for a tip. You know, you order something and they flip the pad asking for a certain percentage. This place Is counter service and I place a regular tip on my card thinking that since my family and I are the only ones in the restaurant, at least they'll bring us our food. Wrong! Dude took his time to walk outside and alert us that our food was ready (to be picked up by ourselves). Makes me think twice about tipping at the counter when ordering. I was so saddened by the service I received today, that my appetite was gone after I received my bag! I came in at 12:30 pm and was not welcomed as usual when entering. The lady I ordered my food from ,on the right hand side of order counter, looked at me without a " hello", neither did she asked me what I would like to order. I ordered a super steak burrito with salsa on the side and a steak taco for my partner with a drink and a water. I was not asked if I like a super or regular either! I was not asked if I like black beans or pinto, neither was I asked my salsa choice! The lady was super unfriendly and in a hurry to go somewhere or nowhere! I paid and there was no thank you or anything from this cashier! Of course once my ringer was activated and I picked up my food, it was all wrong! I ordered to eat in and received a paper bag! By burrito was not a super ( but I paid for one). There was no salsa, no sour cream, no cheese and no guacamole in my burrito!! It was a birthday lunch in one of my favorite places and was sorry I made this choice :(((( I know we are all going to rough times right now, but give me a break! It took me 6 months to try Grilly's even though my colleagues assured me it was good. Now that our office moved to right next door to Grilly's, I had to cave in and give it a try... I enjoyed ordering my mixed veggies burrito outside and substituting brown rice free of charge. My total came to about $5.60 for a very large veggie burrito. I watched my burrito order being filled and rolled inside. I opted for the medium salsa and it was delicious. I cannot believe how fast they rolled my burrito, wow! It was a little more food than I needed for lunch but I still finished the whole thing because it was delicious. Yummy! read more

We ordered "take out" for a dinner meeting from Grilly's today - for 10 or so folks. Quesedillas, grande burritos, regular burritos, salsa, guacamole & chips. Faxed the order in, confirmed receipt on the phone and picked it up an hour later. Food was good, not great . . . but, remember I compare these things to New Mexican . . . . no comparison in my book! A Mexican place that doesn't ask you whether you want red or green chile on your food, is not authentic. Not even close. So my five stars are for the service. Faxing was simple. Online menu & fax form made it quick & easy. Guy on the phone when I called to confirm, was a super nice guy. Service when I came to pick the food up, was friendly and fast. It was outstanding for a take out place. Five stars. Next time I need $80+ of reasonable take out Mexican food in Mill Valley I will return to Grilly's. Well, except maybe when the high school 1/2 block away is out for lunch! read more
