After a couple of beers, I was thinking about switching to a martini and playfully asked the bartender, "How are your martini skills?" That was it. Instead of taking it in the lighthearted spirit in which it was intended--or even simply saying she didn't appreciate the question--the bartender reacted as though I'd said something deeply offensive. She walked away visibly upset and refused to serve me. What made the experience particularly strange was what happened next. The other bartender came over to find out what was going on. I explained exactly what I'd said and that there was no insult or disrespect intended; I was literally just opening a conversation about ordering a martini. Rather than defusing an incredibly minor misunderstanding, she doubled down, insisted that my question was somehow inappropriate, and reinforced the refusal to serve me. At that point, I left. I've spent plenty of time in bars and restaurants, and I can't remember another experience where such an innocuous interaction was interpreted with this much hostility. People misunderstand each other sometimes. Professional hospitality means giving a customer a reasonable benefit of the doubt, communicating like an adult, and resolving a minor misunderstanding--not immediately assuming ill intent and escalating it. What concerns me most is that this wasn't one bartender having an off moment. Both bartenders independently chose escalation over hospitality, which makes me wonder whether this reflects a broader culture problem. As a new neighbor, that's especially disappointing. I genuinely want the businesses in this neighborhood to succeed. But hospitality requires a baseline level of professionalism, emotional intelligence, and generosity toward customers. Based on this experience, I won't be returning.

The couch was soft and pillows were plush. I was initially on the fence about accepting a free meal, but I am glad now that I was welcomed into such a vibrant atmosphere. The hospitality is a big plus. The crowds can get big in the evening, so I suggest making reservations ahead of time. The view of the Golden Gate Bridge is the big highlight as well as looking at the king fishers and blue herons. I wish they would add some aquariums. Would be a nice touch.

I reminded her that I had already paid cash (and hadn't received my change). This was the most attention I got over the 4 hour game. That said, the bartender wasn't too busy to serve the locals at the counter multiple times, chatting and laughing extensively with the regulars who were passing around homemade cupcakes or sharing plates of food they'd ordered from the Mexican restaurant next door. I missed a lot of the show because he was blocking the view. I'm vegan and I asked about some of the menu items. His response was clear, but very snotty. I wanted to say, "c'mon.
