Thistle's Original Fish & Chips (right) Fish, Shrimp, & Scallops (left)

Fast, friendly, local joint specializing in fried seafood from across the pond. Plan ahead if you're thinking about coming here on a weekend, let alone a Friday during lent. This place gets jam packed, and for good reason. The kitchen staff seem to have a good system because food gets served hot, fresh, and crispy in no time, even when they are busy. The dining area is very small - probably about 8 tables for 4 with a couple tables for 2 squeezed in between. BYOB!

Absolutely delicious. Party of two and we had the soft shell crab special and the fried fish and chips. We both chose the Old Bay fries. The server was very pleasant and efficient.

Another summer equals another chance for soft shell crabs. Most people know them for their fish and chips (and rightly so), but for about three or four summer months every year The Thistle is also the place to go for soft shell crabs. They're always fresh and almost always jumbos. Lightly sauteed in just a little flour and seasoning, and finished with a buttery sauce, the soft shells here are just about perfect. The cole slaw is also great and the fries with Old Bay are incredible. Just remember to order them well done. As always, we finished the meal with the Apple Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce, which may be my favorite dessert in the whole state. It's rich and decadent, but don't think about sharing it. You'll want your own. The staff is as friendly and welcoming as ever, and the interior remains unchanged; cozy and comfortable. I'm already looking forward to my next visit, which will probably be next week.

Ambiance is simple. You'll feel like you're sitting in someone's dining room. Service was good. Our waitress was super sweet and answered all our questions since it was our first visit The fish and chips were served super hot and fresh. Cooked perfectly, flakey and no fishy taste. Will definitely return

Clam strips (sorry but half gone... LOL) we're fresh, plump and tasty!

FISH & CHIPS!!! Had a craving for some fresh, well-made, tasty AND SUBSTANTIAL fish and chips, and so the right choice was to go to The Thistle! Other dishes enjoyed were the Clam Strips (a special), a half dozen Oysters On The Half Shell, and Shrimp Stuffed With Crab Meat. All were very fresh and tasty. I considered trying the Meat Pie, but I was told it was made with beef. I prefer lamb, so that was a pass for me. The service is fast, friendly and accommodating. The decor is cozy and quaint, even if a bit dated. If appetizers hadn't come so quickly, I would say that (to start) some complimentary warm biscuits or bread and a small side salad to offset all of the other proteins and starches would've been welcome additions their dinner meal offerings... BUT THE FISH & CHIPS!!! Perfectly made fries, and a monster piece of fish HIT (ALL) THE SPOT(S)!!!

If you like fish and chips the Thistle is a must. I have stopped ordering it other places because the let down is too much. I have resolved to never eat another mediocre or just Palin bad fish and chips again, so I will only be coming here from now on. I've done take out and eaten in; service is quickly and friendly with both options. Last visit I had the halibut special in a lemon butter sauce and it was perfection.

One of our favorite spots! Everything is so delicious and fresh! Staff is super friendly and service is 10/10! Highly recommend

Anyone who's had fish and chips in Australia will understand this tepid review. Don't get me wrong, it's perfectly serviceable, and the battered fish is pretty darn good, BUT I'm used to a much more varied menu and more fish options back home in Oz. Expect a wait. I knew Good Friday would be busy but from what I gather, this place has a great following so queues are the norm. Batter = 8/10 Fish choices = negligible. Assume it's cod Ambience = weird Service = 7/10 Overall = cheaper than a flight to Australia

A-MA-ZING! This place is hands down one of the best Fish n' Chips I've had in my ENTIRE life. This is not an exaggeration and quite frankly I was not expecting it to be this good. I came here thinking I would get a "decent" fish and chips as that is what I typically get everywhere else, But, my God, was I wrong. This place is phenomenal! The batter on this fish is truly something to talk about and I would give up a lot to get my hands on this recipe. It was golden brown, full of flavor, and a touch of sweetness. The cod on the inside was meaty, flaky, and super fresh. We also ordered the Fried Shrimp platter. We received 5 LARGE shrimp with the tails removed!! Seems like a small thing doesn't it--having the tails removed? It's not though! The small detail of removing the tail now allows you to eat the entire shrimp without trying to bite around the little tail and discarding it. It DOES make a difference. Let's move on to the coleslaw now... Even that was delicious and chopped finely. Do they sell this by the pint? If they don't, please consider doing so as it is THAT good! I had the pleasure of speaking to Susan, one of the owners, and she mentioned that the coleslaw was homemade. You can COMPLETELY taste the difference down to the mustard seeds! Folks, do yourself a favor - come here and eat, and do it often!! They have tables outside and it's BYOB. Bring yourself a nice cold beer and enjoy all this place has to offer! FRESH & DELICIOUS SEAFOOD that will have you leaving your plate empty! Trust me - this place is a game changer!

The gratin was perfectly done, the broth was rich and flavorful, and everything tasted balanced and well executed. We started with a Tito's mule and a passion fruit margarita -- both refreshing and well made. The garlic and cheese Jersey wings with their house sauce were outstanding and full of flavor. The mac and cheese was incredibly creamy, generously cheesy, and finished with a golden crust that added great texture. The ribeye with spinach was cooked to the perfect temperature, and the blue cheese burger with bacon and onion rings had an amazing contrast between creamy and crispy. The mushroom pizza with extra cheese was another great choice. The menu offers Irish, Italian, and American options, so there's something for everyone. It's a family-friendly sports bar with a welcoming atmosphere -- perfect for watching your favorite team while enjoying great food. Highly recommend. We will absolutely return.

A Ripper: otherwise known as a "Deep-Fried Hotdog". Three plain and simple words, but when…read morecombined, they are nearly pornographic. At least they are for me. Rutt's Hut has been on my punch list for a long time. Actually NJ fried Hot Dogs have been both from Rutt's and from Hiram's over in Ft. Lee. I got to Hiram's and today was my luck day to get a shot at a Ripper. Rutt's is a bit off the beaten path and is down a meandering pothole filled road in a very industrial feeling part of town surrounded by wooded areas. It seems like it would be a better place for a serial killer body dump than a Hot Dog vendor but it's been there since 1928 so it must be doing something right. There is a large, private, and free parking lot which is a huge bonus in my playbook. The building looks like it is in disrepair. There are 2 areas to eat here. A door to the left seems to be a pub/bar with sit down service and then there is the right side that I went to which is a stand up, indoor counter where you can get in and out very quickly. This is a cash only spot so come prepared. Get to an open counter worker, give them your order, and pay when they hand over the goods. I was a little intimidated when I walked in because it was clear that everyone else in the place understood the ordering routine and knew the menu (there are quite a few other items you could order other than Rippers). I stood in a corner like a potted plant for about 10 minutes and watched what others did when they walked in before I figured out the process. It's pretty simple but I did not want to screw up Rutt's world order by doing something stupid. The 3 Rippers I ordered were good (but not best in class for me). The one I liked the most was the chili cheese dressed Ripper because the chili was actually quite tasty. On the counter are large containers of brown mustard and almost-fluorescent yellow relish. People seem to love the stuff. It was a bit like sweetened sauerkraut for me and the color of it makes me think it is either radioactive or seasoned with antifreeze. I would be happy going here again but I can't say that my Rippers were anything special. I might ask for them to be a little overdone next time to add a bit of texture. What I did like about Rutt's was the history, the dilapidated building, the simplicity of the menu, the naming of their dogs as "Rippers", and the fact that it felt like I was eating among real NJ natives that knew exactly what they were there for. Experiencing local culture doesn't get much better than that.
