Sat at the bar which was fine for one but if you have more a table is probably a better option for service and dish clearing. Enjoyed the happy hour options and got a salt and vinegar martini - which was very unique, a half dozen oysters which were very good and lastly the spicy tuna tartar that was spot on. Good ambiance and has a little something for everyone.
Oysters flown in daily, elegant American style cuisine and ambiance, polite and informative service, and the eggs alla vodka was a first time try for me, it was spectacular. Thank you The Smith team!!! Our waitress was wonderful.
I was on my friend's bachelorette trip to the city, and we came for dinner. To start, we decided to just enjoy the complimentary bread and butter, which we enjoyed. For my entree, I decided to try something new and so I got the short rib mafaldine. It was very good, and I would order it again. The cosmo was also great! As for service, our server was very kind and accommodating to dietary needs. That being said, service was a bit slow. Overall, I really enjoyed this restaurant!
Best mac and cheese I've ever had!! The rest of the food was also wonderful. The parmesan truffle fries are a must order. The service was alright. Got a little slow at times but overall, it was good. The food came out quick for a Saturday afternoon. The location is amazing, close to the river. The restaurant is bigger than I expected it to be so it was no problem getting seated without a reservation.
I had dinner at this place and enjoyed it. The menu was arranged before the group arrived. I love this because I get to sample far more on the menu than if I were to attend with my spouse or friend. The meal began with burrata. I love this cheese and know that it can swing in presentation from very watery to dry. This seemed to hit the perfect middle. Light flavor, not too watery or dry, and dressed with a bit of pesto and accompanied by garlic bread that was fantastic. The Caesar salad was good. Crunchy parmesan, which is always a nice treat on a Caesar salad, is enough to make me want to not share this family-style dinner. The dressing was near pefect, but given family style servings, seemed to not be enough for me. The roasted fingerling potatoes were divine. They were prepared with a lemon aioli, chile crisp, and topped with scallions. This was so good that we asked for another serving. Roasted brussels sprouts resting on an avocado base and pink peppercorns. They were nicely prepared and glad that others at the table did not care for Brussels sprouts. That left more for me. The Rigatoni alla vodka with delicious stracciatella cheese was a wonderful touch, and I was thinking about having that as a separate dish for dinner alone. Now, I am not a fan of poached salmon, but typically, the broth used to poach the salmon seems to be no more than salt, pepper, and sometimes, rosemary. I had instant regret once I tasted it, and it reminded me why I only pan-sear or grill salmon. One thing I loved about some of the places I ate in Chicago was the style of the steakhouse.
Fantastic food, service, and ambiance! We went for a birthday dinner. Having been to The Smith in New York, we assumed this would be the same. But their Chicago location has its own feel. Our server was excellent. He explained the menu and listened carefully to food allergies at the table. They are very sensitive to food allergies. The manager is required to stop by the table to verify what is needed, and to ensure the kitchen paid attention to the instructions, any food for someone with allergies is labeled with a red flag. The food was great. We started with an order of Brussel sprouts and some oysters. (The oysters were from me. I'm not a lover of Brussel sprouts.) They had several types of oysters to choose from. I asked the server what his favorite was and he said it was their special - an oyster from Virginia called "Chuck-cago." They were outstanding. For our meals we had a variety of things. Everyone was pleased with their entrees but other than presentation I can only speak to the bar steak. The bar steak is a flat iron steak which came our medium rare. I had it with the chimichurri sauce. It's served with sauteed spinach and fries (pomme frites). I also had their old fashioned. They use walnut bitters which gives the old fashioned a little different taste. There are two things that could be improved: (1) the chopped salad is colorless. They have apples in the salad - I suggest that they keep the skins on so the salad isn't just a pale green. (2) it is very loud, so much so, it was hard to hear people talking at our table. Regardless of those two items, our experience was wonderful and we do plan to visit again.
I love the Caesar Salad with Salmon here. I recommend it to all my friends. I was pleasantly surprised to have gone recently and saw Crispy Rice Spicy Tuna on the menu. Always a good time here and great service
(Kari's rating 6/10) Came here for a quick bite and I've been to the Smith a few times before, but this was the first time I'd come in for brunch. The servers were really sweet, they checked in relatively often and gave us both sparkling and still water. She was relatively attentive and checked in the perfect amount. The bloody Mary was OK, a little bit fishy, not very spicy and came with a pepperoncini and an olive. The breakfast sandwich was next which came with an egg, almost like a hollandaise sauce on a brioche bun. The bun was very light and fluffy, a little bit sweet and overall pretty delicious. As someone who lives not too far from the Smith, I wouldn't necessarily come out of my way to come here, but it was a nice upscale brunch place.
This has to be one of the top burgers I've ever tried. Period. Although on the pricier side, the burger is filling and even comes with a side of delicious, perfectly salted, crispy fries. I get mine in medium rare and the burger melts in your mouth. I think the couple times I went, it is on the juicier side (this is no where a dry burger)! The Smiths is one of the places I recommend my friends if they're looking for a good burger spot. This place never disappoints. Service was amazing and attentive which is always a plus. The vibes were really chill and casual!
Our server, Aaron, took wonderful care of us at Brunch today. His suggestion to share French Toast as an appetizer was genius- tasted like eating dessert first. My friend described it as "divine". We both got the shrimp and grits. YUM! Love the texture of the potato strings on top. Delicious coffee and cocktails. Just perfect!
I want to start off by saying the food from this place was absolutely delicious. We each had a bite of the other dishes ordered and I can confidently say they all were amazing. I had the shrimp scampi and it literally melted in your mouth with a crunch from the toasted bread crumbs which was an excellent touch. A tad on the pricer side for the portions but maybe I am just a hungry gal. The drinks were also a bit pricey for the small size but hey it's Chicago. They have a cute photo booth downstairs that gives six poses which was a great addition to this place. One thing I will say is that when I read this place was quite loud I didn't realize it was as loud as a busy bar. It was extremely hard to hear my friends and we would have to lean it close to hear what we were saying. If you're looking to catch up with some friends this might not be the best place. I also want to mention that this was my birthday celebration and saw that the table next to us had a small cake with a candle but our server never had any birthday treat. Not too mad just a little salty as she kept ushering us to get a dessert and I thought this was because of the birthday and was a complementary but it was included in the final bill.
I've only come here for brunch so can only speak to that. it's been stellar every time. The smoked salmon with potato and poached egg is my favorite but everything has been good. I think the savory items have been a touch above their sweet ones though. The service is speedy and they keep your coffee cup filled up.
9/30/25 Tuesday Came in the evening with reservations. Food: -steak was 10/10 must try so tender and seasoned well -chicken was a bit overcooked and dry -skillet dessert was BOMB, but leaning on the overly sweet side -chocolate cake just the right sweetness and I love dark chocolate but a bit dry despite the layers of crème. The crunch bits were a bit hard instead of crisp -potatoes were ok, but not memorable -salmon tartar thing was unique but the crisped rice as a bit hard -standard Cesar salad not memorable -burrata pretty good overall and very nice presentation but the bread was a bit hard -veggies were tender and well seasoned but a bit too oily Ambiance: -the room we ate in was a smaller confined space with no windows so it's quite dim and has a medieval ambiance. Can get pretty loud with a big group. Service: -service was good but food came out slowly Location: Pretty central and close to the river.

I Came here for a nice brunch with two of my friends, we decide to sit outside to take advantage of the weather before it gets cold. For my main disk, I order The Smith Eggs Benedict. Eggs Benedict is a common American breakfast for brunch dishes. On this occasion, The Smith Eggs Benedict had some black forest ham, English muffin, hollandaise, and poached eggs with home fries on the side. The Eggs Benedicts wasn't too heavy, perfectly poached, and had a great flavor to it too and was delicious very tasty, definitely recommend ordering this meal. This restaurant is located in downtown Chicago and has a good staff, very attentive-friendly and helpful. The outdoor arrangement was great. read more
Things started off rocky, but ended well here. It took a while for our server to get our order but found out 2 people called in sick so we totally understood the situation. I started out with a lychee gimlet and some raw oysters. After this, my MIL and I shared the branzino and pork chop entrees while my hubby got the steak and fries. I loved the unique flavors of all the different dishes and sides. Of course I had to top it all off with the sticky toffee pudding which was very good. Kudos to our server for holding the night down and having to take on more tables than he normally would have to. We would totally recommend and come back. read more

The Smith is pretty much like any other American restaurant in Chicago. Seafood, drinks, and my burger were great. I wouldn't compare them to more upscale locations, because this place delivers for the price. Service was also great, but nothing to write home about. If you come you probably won't be disappointed, but I personally can't recommend this over any other American joint. It is what it is, which is a solid option among stiff competition. read more

My husband and I are from Pittsburgh so when we walked past this fun looking eatery we had to try it . They were PACKED inside and out (god bless those servers)! I had the basil lemon martini and honestly it was kind of sour, wasn't a huge fan. I ordered a Caesar steak salad and unfortunetly it came saturated in dressing which was a bummer. My husband ordered the bone in chicken and LOVED it. We had fun taking photos in their photo booth by the rest rooms hidden downstairs , such a cute ideas! I can't say my food / beverage experience was the best but I can say service was great despite how just they were that night. I would come back and give it another try ! read more

We came here to celebrate my friend's birthday and not only was the food good, the servers were so great! The waitress brought our friend a huge chocolate chip cookie with a candle! The inside is so clean and sleek and I loved the open air. I'm not a ketchup person but the house-made one was very good! read more

I came here as a walk-in on a summer thursday, they let us eat inside but the windows were big and open so you could see the outside. The restaurant is very beautiful and is a great location. I just got the Pork Chop with Jalapeño Cheddar Grits. But it was honestly amazing. The pork chop was so tender it felt like eating a ribeye. It was probably the best pork chop I've ever had to be quite honest. The pickled peppers gave it an amazing sour kick. The grits (which I'm guessing is one of their specialties) were just as amazing if not better (spicy and cheesy lol). I was scraping the bottom of the plate at the end to get ever last bit. I was super impressed by their food. I would like to come back some time and try a lot more read more

always pleasant time at the smith. came for some drinks at the bar while we waited for our table. drinks are always so good here & the bartenders are so friendly & outgoing. our server was so slay, she helped us with the menu when needed & answered all questions if we had any. not many of us were able to take leftovers home as we ate the whole dish!! very cutesy & demure inside. bathrooms are in the basement, but they're very clean & up-kept. will be returning read more
This is a basic chain restaurant that pretty much wants to be more upscale than they are. The food was decent in terms of pasta. We got the black truffle arancini, risotto gnocchi, rigatoni alla vodka, cheeseburger for the kids menu, and a steak. The steak came out well done when we asked for medium rare, but they were nice enough to exchange it for the smith burger once we informed the staff. Either way, I wouldn't recommend you getting the steak here. It's better off going to an actual steakhouse for similar pricing. You'll get the premium meat. As for desserts, I was surprised with the apple pie although I wish my ice cream scoop was a little bigger, it did impress me as someone who isn't a big apple pie fan. read more
I got the shrimp + grits which includes a cocktail, and they were nice enough to turn one of them into a mocktail for me. Both were delicious and paired really well together! It is a little bit on the smaller side so I would suggest getting an appetizer as well (but salads are pretty big portions). Overall a great place for a slightly upscale brunch! Walked in around lunchtime (party of 3) and was able to sit down immediately. The restaurant was busy, and we sat comfortably toward the back of the restaurant in a booth. Our server promptly served us with 2 types of water (filtered and sparkling). We placed our orders shortly afterwards. I enjoyed the following items: Tomato soup - uniquely served with a melty cheddar cheese on top of the bowl - similar to French onion soup. It had croutons mixed in, and i loved it! Grilled chicken sandwich - recommended by our server. Bursting with flavor, including perfectly dressed greens and a delicious Burrata cheese. So good! I enjoyed my meal and would definitely eat here again. If you're close by, I highly recommend you check it out! read more
Perfect way to end my Chicago trip! My sister and I came here our last night in Chicago and it didn't disappoint! We made reservations for 7:30 and was immediately seated upon our arrival. Our server Oscar was excellent and made our dining experience even better. For our starters we ordered the arancini which was good, though I felt it could use a sauce of some sort. For my entree I ordered the brick pressed chicken which comes with baby spinach, smashed garlic potatoes and lemon chicken jus and my sis ordered steak and fries. My dish was delicious, my chicken was perfectly juicy and crispy, seasoning was on point and the lemon au jus was delectable. The mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach was really good too but the chicken was where it was at! My sister ordered a steak with chimichurri and fries and she was also very satisfied with her meal. Honestly the highlight of this meal was dessert. My current sweet obsession is sticky toffee pudding and when I saw this on the dessert menu, it was an automatic choice. This was the best sticky toffee pudding I've had found so far, it was extremely rich, buttery, sweet it was excellent. My sister who insisted on getting the s'mores in a jar dessert ended up eating more of my dessert than hers that's how good mine was. After our meal we went downstairs and took some pictures in their photo booth, which was such a cute touch! I would absolutely return to The Smith when visiting Chicago again. read more
My first ever meal in Chicago! My only star off is for the service - it was incredibly slow even though there were only two tables in the restaurant. The food is solid here--I loved the complimentary biscuits they serve you at the beginning! They were hot, and fluffy and delicious! Skip the matcha latte--I must admit that I am picky when it comes to matcha, but this one was not good. Their goat cheese omelette is delicious--if you don't love goat cheese I think you might be able to share this with someone as it's not incredibly overwhelming. The best dishes were the burrata toast and toffee pancakes - the eggplant was a unique addition to the toast and I wish we had ordered the full portion instead! The pancakes were the perfect amount of sweetness - although I definitely would share this dish. We also ordered the chicken sausage Benedict - they brought us the wrong benny but corrected it. The chicken sausage is sweeter than I anticipated but my favorites from the dish were the potatoes- delightfully crispy and well seasoned! Overall, delicious food, and gorgeous restaurant. read more
The outdoor seating deserves its own set of stars. They have plenty of it and lots of the tables are shaded by umbrellas. Service was a little slow and inattentive but I understand they were busy on a Saturday morning for brunch. Food was unique and very tasty! We both loved what we got. read more

Not to be hyperbolic, but this is one of the best brunches I've had in some time. We tried The Smith solely based on the delicious aroma we experienced while walking by and decided to give it a go. I was pleasantly surprised by the great service, menu options (many of which included a brunch cocktail) and ambiance. I had the Buttermilk Pancakes which were VERY good. They came with a toffee syrup and maple pecan butter (I believe). These barely needed any syrup, but adding a dash of maple took it over the top. The Chicken Sausage was very tasty. Home fries/potatoes were just okay. We both had a Sangria for our cocktail and it was light and refreshing. Pricing was reasonable and service was quick and the vibe was of a bustling/hip spot. Our waiter was very kind. Will definitely return when visiting Chicago! read more

First time diners for Thanksgiving Day dinner. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed in and made to feel comfortable! Our servers, Coco, made sure we understood the menu and answered any questions about it. The food arrived to our table hot, fresh, delicious, & filling! The drinks from the bar were excellent! Had a lovely time with my friend on a Friday night. We literally got the same exact things. The gatsby was a yummy drink. Not to sweet or bitter would definitely have it again. The smith steak was delicious and I went with the chimichurri sauce. They definitely do not go light with the fries finally we ended dinner with an espresso martini. It was definitely better than what I've had elsewhere, but not in love. The space was super busy and packed so I recommend making a reservation in advanced. There's a photo booth downstairs which is fun! read more
Got here just before 10 on Saturday. Plenty of seating available. We were seated outside but I like how all the walls inside also opened to give a nice airy feel while under more cover. Absolutely, loved The Smith! The ambiance was chill and everyone seemed to be having not only a great time but great food! I was apart of a bachelorette party this weekend and our original dinner plans got rained on. I easily got to make reservations via OpenTable for the five of us. One of the girls and I shared and loved the following: 10/10 Crispy Sesame Calamari 10/10 Cucumber Loco (practically a marg) 12/10 Brick Pressed Chicken 15/10 House Fries with their garlic aioli The amount of burgers that were coming out and side of fries were mouth watering so we ordered two house fries for the table instead of dessert! Ha Ha The restaurant manager came around to greet us and congratulate the bride. Later, our server came by with 5 shots of their " French 75 slushee". Went into the Smith on a Saturday afternoon and didn't have a problem getting a table for 5, we did have a reservation just in case. Upon entering, the hostess asked if we needed a kids' menu - as I did have my toddler with me! They didn't seem to have any coloring sheets or anything. As we got to our table, our chairs were all wet, and we had to wait a second for someone to come by so we could grab napkins to clean them off. That was a tad annoying. Once our actual server came by, the experience became much more pleasant. He was welcoming, kind, and jovial. For food, 2 people in the party ordered the Ranchero scramble and seemed to enjoy it. Another ordered the Benedict Johnny, my daughter got the churro waffles, and I went with the Smith burger. The Churro waffle was SOOOOO good. The chocolate sauce it came with was absolutely delicious! The burger I got was delish a well! The bacon shallot jam was great, along with the TSB secret sauce they use! The fries were cooked perfectly! If you order anything from the egg section, you get a complimentary brunch cocktail or juice. For dessert, we went with the sticky toffee pudding and s'mores in a jar! Both were fantastic! The sticky toffee pudding has a cake like consistency and was awesome! The s'mores jar was really good, too, and it's better suited for someone who likes mousse and such. I enjoyed BOTH! Haha! Something super minor, other kids seated after us were offered coloring sheets! Guess they have them after all! We asked our server for one, and he brought one over. Maybe the hostess could be a little more consistent with that. Overall tasty food and great service from our server. I would definitely go back! read more

I REALLY enjoyed it here at The Smith, located in River North, Chicago. I took my boyfriend for his birthday dinner and I am so happy I did! I wanted to take him to a nicer, more upscale restaurant but nothing TOO over the top. The Smith was just that. It was so luxe, posh, and all-white inside (check out the bathrooms, they're super old-fashioned yet very modern and sleek), and the service, drinks, and food were all a 10/10! We got the NY Strip steak with chimichurri sauce and the kale + quinoa salad. We loved both our meals and left with clean plates. Definitely make a reservation upon coming to the restaurant for it gets busy around dinner time and weekends. Overall, I have nothing bad to say about the place. We truly had a great experience! Absolutely perfect for date nights! read more
A friend who lives in the city and is a notable foodie made a reservation for brunch at The Smith, and it did not disappoint. Located just blocks from the many of the hotels in River North, The Smith has a classic but trendy vibe inside. The inclusion of a breakfast cocktail with a brunch plate is such a steal and reason enough to stop by. We started with mussels, spicy salmon tartare, and hummus. The mussels were delicious, but salmon tartare was a savory surprise. I had the Cosmo Spritz and my boyfriend had the Bloody Mary, and both very well done. For entrees, my boyfriend and I both had the Benedict Johnny, which was the perfect combination of sweet and savory. We left feeling full without feeling heavy--a sign of high quality food. Definitely worth the trip if you're in Chicago! read more
Came here for brunch today and this place is so nice but busy. They have a ton of options which makes it easy to accommodate everyone. I had an egg white omelette and had the churro waffle as an appetizer with my family. Everything comes with a bit of a side salad. All the food was so good! Everyone at the table enjoyed what they had right down to the coffee. Our waitress was also very nice even being as busy as she was. Prices are very reasonable for the area. SN: the zero proof lady bird drink is excellent! Highly recommend. Definitely adding this place to my Chi town brunch spots! read more

Unreal. I am a big eggs Benedict fan and this might be the best I've ever had. My girlfriend and I ordered the The Eggs Benedict Johnny and The Smith Eggs Benedict and split so we had a bit of both. The potatoes that came with the The Smith were spicy and seasoned perfectly, crispy on the outside soft on the inside. The Benedict sauce was exquisite and eggs cooked perfectly. The corn bread that the Johnny was sitting on was slightly spicy and went extremely well with the delicious tangy habanero sauce the waiter brought out. Ended up putting it on every bite! The dishes both came with complimentary drinks, great Bloody Mary and delightfully sweet Pool Party Slushie. Coffee was fantastic, had a red eye and the espresso in it was great and not overly bitter. They brought out complimentary flat water and sparkling which was a nice touch. Price was also very reasonable. Last but not least, the building is so cool looking! It's design is elegant and the inside matches the exterior perfectly. Reminds me of the stylings of the The Smiths... the exterior reminds me of London. Great music (classic rock), ambiance, and service. 10/10! read more

Excellent food, service, and atmosphere. Prices are reasonable ($20-$30 for non steak entrees). The Smith steak is a flank steak that was cooked to perfection served with either fries or a massive portion of mixed greens. The spaghetti bolognese is one of the best I've ever had - totally unsuspecting as the sauce is chicken based as opposed to beef based. The service was excellent - our waiter was very attentive and friendly and the courses came out not too soon or not too long after placing our order and enjoying appetizers. The cocktail list is extensive and everything looked really good coming out to other tables. It was a little noisy, but it was also a Saturday night so i wouldn't let that deter you from stopping in! read more
