Super welcoming staff and I loved the vibe, super bright and open with really cool lighting and shelving behind the bar. The floor tile was really cool too, modern and comfortable. I had one of the best salads in recent memory during a business lunch at The Smith. I went to The Smith for the first time with a small group of colleagues on a beautiful summer day. We were seated near the open windows in a pleasant and airy space. While I don't normally order salads, the sugar snap chicken salad caught my eye. It had a terrific balance of flavors: a base of arugula nicely dressed with a lemon vinaigrette and tossed with sliced snap peas and fennel, well-seasoned grilled chicken, farro, and pistachios. The ingredients were all very fresh and complemented each other well. Colleagues ordered the chicken sandwich and were very happy with it. Portions all around were generous. This is a place for a pretty hearty lunch rather than light bites. Service was friendly, though a little slow, and one of my colleagues had to remind them of her drink order. Prices were on the high side but not unusual for the neighborhood, and the high quality and size of my salad made me feel like the price point wasn't completely outrageous. read more

From the moment we walked in, everything was exceptional. The restaurant was extremely clean, the atmosphere was beautiful, and the service was top notch! We started with the Spicy Salmon Tartare, and it was absolutely delicious fresh, flavorful, and the perfect appetizer. For drinks, I had the Cucumber-Pineapple Mimosa and a Bloody Mary, and both were fantastic. The mimosa was refreshing and unique and the Bloody Mary was perfect and full of flavor. For my main meal I ordered the filet mignon Steak cooked medium rare with sunny side up eggs, home fries, and hollandaise sauce. The steak was cooked beautifully!! Very tender and melted in my mouth and so full of flavor. A huge shoutout to our server, Zach. He was truly amazing! He was attentive to every need and so friendly. He made sure we never had an empty drink. Our water and sparkling water were constantly refreshed, and our empty plates were cleared almost immediately. I also want to recognize Eric, the General Manager, and Kiffa, the manager, who both stopped by our table and introduced themselves to us throughout our meal to make sure everything was perfect. We came here for a group brunch right when they opened and it was kind of a mess from the moment we sat down. Booth was super cramped for our party of 6, water glasses were dirty, sparkling water was flat. Our waitress was super super kind, but boy was service slow. Our oysters came out before our drinks did. The coffee was so bitter and did not taste good in my opinion. The oysters and the crispy breakfast potatoes were the best part of the meal. I ordered the Benedict Johnny as my main, but the cornbread was so dry I did not enjoy it. They did have a kids menu and the french toast was super yummy. I wish the kids meal came with some bacon or fruit or something other than just the french toast. I had to order all that on the side. Overall, food was OK, service was friendly, but very very slow. We made a last minute reservation for The Smith on a Friday night and so glad we did! It was in walking distance from our hotel, beautiful ambiance, outdoor seating, large menu, kind staff, what more can you ask for! One thing that stood out to me was their care and consideration for my allergy. They not only noted it to the kitchen, but the manager had come over to explain they would put red flags in every item that was safe to eat (which was everything). I thought this was so kind and took the service to the next level. We all enjoyed our food and the views! I would have to say the bar steak was my favorite, the burger was delicious too and i'm not even a big burger gal. I was on my friend's bachelorette trip to the city, and we came for dinner. To start, we decided to just enjoy the complimentary bread and butter, which we enjoyed. I had dinner at this place and enjoyed it. The menu was arranged before the group arrived. I love this because I get to sample far more on the menu than if I were to attend with my spouse or friend. The meal began with burrata. I love this cheese and know that it can swing in presentation from very watery to dry. This seemed to hit the perfect middle. Light flavor, not too watery or dry, and dressed with a bit of pesto and accompanied by garlic bread that was fantastic. The Caesar salad was good. Crunchy parmesan, which is always a nice treat on a Caesar salad, is enough to make me want to not share this family-style dinner. The dressing was near pefect, but given family style servings, seemed to not be enough for me. The roasted fingerling potatoes were divine. They were prepared with a lemon aioli, chile crisp, and topped with scallions. This was so good that we asked for another serving. Roasted brussels sprouts resting on an avocado base and pink peppercorns. They were nicely prepared and glad that others at the table did not care for Brussels sprouts. That left more for me. The Rigatoni alla vodka with delicious stracciatella cheese was a wonderful touch, and I was thinking about having that as a separate dish for dinner alone. Now, I am not a fan of poached salmon, but typically, the broth used to poach the salmon seems to be no more than salt, pepper, and sometimes, rosemary. I had instant regret once I tasted it, and it reminded me why I only pan-sear or grill salmon. One thing I loved about some of the places I ate in Chicago was the style of the steakhouse. read more

Fantastic food, service, and ambiance! We went for a birthday dinner. Having been to The Smith in New York, we assumed this would be the same. But their Chicago location has its own feel. Our server was excellent. He explained the menu and listened carefully to food allergies at the table. They are very sensitive to food allergies. The manager is required to stop by the table to verify what is needed, and to ensure the kitchen paid attention to the instructions, any food for someone with allergies is labeled with a red flag. The food was great. We started with an order of Brussel sprouts and some oysters. (The oysters were from me. I'm not a lover of Brussel sprouts.) They had several types of oysters to choose from. I asked the server what his favorite was and he said it was their special - an oyster from Virginia called "Chuck-cago." They were outstanding. For our meals we had a variety of things. Everyone was pleased with their entrees but other than presentation I can only speak to the bar steak. The bar steak is a flat iron steak which came our medium rare. I had it with the chimichurri sauce. It's served with sauteed spinach and fries (pomme frites). I also had their old fashioned. They use walnut bitters which gives the old fashioned a little different taste. There are two things that could be improved: (1) the chopped salad is colorless. They have apples in the salad - I suggest that they keep the skins on so the salad isn't just a pale green. (2) it is very loud, so much so, it was hard to hear people talking at our table. The servers were really sweet, they checked in relatively often and gave us both sparkling and still water. She was relatively attentive and checked in the perfect amount. The bloody Mary was OK, a little bit fishy, not very spicy and came with a pepperoncini and an olive. The breakfast sandwich was next which came with an egg, almost like a hollandaise sauce on a brioche bun. The bun was very light and fluffy, a little bit sweet and overall pretty delicious. As someone who lives not too far from the Smith, I wouldn't necessarily come out of my way to come here, but it was a nice upscale brunch place. read more

This has to be one of the top burgers I've ever tried. Period. Although on the pricier side, the burger is filling and even comes with a side of delicious, perfectly salted, crispy fries. I get mine in medium rare and the burger melts in your mouth. I think the couple times I went, it is on the juicier side (this is no where a dry burger)! I want to start off by saying the food from this place was absolutely delicious. We each had a bite of the other dishes ordered and I can confidently say they all were amazing. I had the shrimp scampi and it literally melted in your mouth with a crunch from the toasted bread crumbs which was an excellent touch. A tad on the pricer side for the portions but maybe I am just a hungry gal. The drinks were also a bit pricey for the small size but hey it's Chicago. They have a cute photo booth downstairs that gives six poses which was a great addition to this place. One thing I will say is that when I read this place was quite loud I didn't realize it was as loud as a busy bar. It was extremely hard to hear my friends and we would have to lean it close to hear what we were saying. If you're looking to catch up with some friends this might not be the best place. I also want to mention that this was my birthday celebration and saw that the table next to us had a small cake with a candle but our server never had any birthday treat. Food: -steak was 10/10 must try so tender and seasoned well -chicken was a bit overcooked and dry -skillet dessert was BOMB, but leaning on the overly sweet side -chocolate cake just the right sweetness and I love dark chocolate but a bit dry despite the layers of crème. Stopped into The Smith on a Sunday night and had no problem grabbing a seat at the bar, even during a holiday weekend. There's plenty of bar seating which makes it a great spot for solo dining if you just want a casual meal and some good drinks. I went with dirty gin martinis that came with blue cheese olives, so good, and the bartender was fantastic. For food, I ordered the crispy calamari, which ended up being plenty for a meal. What stood out was the unique twist: it came almost like a Greek salad with the calamari mixed in. Hearty, fresh, and way more filling than your typical calamari appetizer. Overall, the vibe was relaxed, the service was on point, and I definitely want to come back to try more of the menu (I already have my eye on some of their meat dishes). Wanted breakfast with my family all in for my daughter's graduation. They wanted to go to Brulee , but I pitched hard for the Smith because I really liked my experience in the New York location. And I was paying so I won. lol. Made a ressi for 6 people for 9:30 breakfast on a Saturday right when they open. There was only two other parties there to be seated. Of course we get seated in the back corner table of the restaurant by the kitchen doors near a waiter station that couldn't be busier. I politely ask if we could move two tables further into the restaurant and I couldn't believe the eye roll attitude. I got right away. That set the tone. I wanted this place to be as good as the one in New York but it just wasn't. we got water right away, but the coffee order was slow in coming. When it did come- it was lukewarm. ....and several thought it tasted a bit bitter. And by the way - Why do you have to wait 10 minutes to get a coffee warm up-refill. The waitress, while nice enough....but...... was something going on in the back ? First thing Saturday morning people want their coffee, right? Food was good, back waiters and bus people were good. I had previously been to The Smith in D.C. for drinks but hadn't gotten anything to eat. Upon walking in you notice that this space is massive. There is a ton of seating so I see why there were reservations available. The interior is very rustic chic. The noise level was pretty loud. We had difficulty hearing each other. They had a basil based cocktail we all had to try. I ordered the steak frites after my delicious cocktail and was wowed by the sauce that was flowing on top. I had a different dinner place picked out, but due to a friend having the last name Smith, he wanted to go here. And boy, am I glad we did! From the ambiance and service to the incredible food and drinks, it was a way better choice than what I had picked. We sat at the bar as there was a wait for a table when we got there. The bartender was really cool and attentive. Old fashioned, amaretto sour & Moscow mule were all fantastic. The amaretto sour came out in a color I didn't recognize as amaretto sour, so I prejudged it.. turns out, it was the best amaretto sour I've had! We ordered the tuna appetizer. 10/10, no notes. It was a hard decision between the lamb meatballs and the filet mignon. Bartender said to do the filet and I'm glad I did. It was cooked exactly how I wanted, cut like butter and the flavor was immaculate. There was a Photo Booth downstairs near the bathrooms which added a spark of fun and excitement. This place was very good. A friend and I met here for dinner tonight, I'm in town on business and she lives about an hour away by train in the Chicago suburbs. She hadn't been here before but chose it because it was in between the train station and my hotel. I had scoped out the menu ahead of time and knew I was going to get a steak. The server recommended the steak frites, which comes with French fries (obviously), and spinach. It was a flat iron steak and I asked for garlic butter instead of the peppercorn sauce, and it was delicious. My friend ordered a pasta dish which also looked good. We forgot to place our appetizer order so it did come out a little bit after the entrees, which was fine. We ordered the burrata which was also excellent. It is a very large portion and comes with garlic bread toast points, I believe, and spicy marinara sauce. I ordered the matcha-yuzu lemonade (sorry, this review is going backwards!) which was also very good, with nice presentation. There were only two misses of the night for me. The first one is that the bathroom is a bit of a walk - you have to go and find the door, then walk downstairs into the basement, and then walk a little bit longer. Honestly it was probably like a 2-minute walk but I hate places where you have to go into the basement/go downstairs to find the bathroom. Secondly, we got the cake for dessert, and it was more of a dark chocolate than we were both expecting. It wasn't very sweet and the cocoa nibs on top tasted almost like Cocoa Pebbles. I normally love dessert but only ate a little bit of it. For context, I'm a snack/bakery/candy editor and my friend is a former candy editor, so we are both educated on desserts :) she thought it was fine but said it could've been sweeter. Waitservice was good as well; according to the receipt our server was Bobby W. They have different waitstaff to clear the tables, and you pay at the end with a different waiter or waitress who comes to run your credit card (if paying with one) at the table; so, we didn't have a TON of interaction with Bobby, but he was friendly. Prices were on par with other places I've been to in Chicago, too. Overall this was a great restaurant and I would return the next time I'm in town. We were looking for a place where to have dinner and we came here because it was the only place that was actually not crowded, I do not understand how that happened because this is a really nice restaurant and the food is amazing, I had the short rib pasta and my family had the burger and every single bite was enjoyable, is a little bit pricey for what it is, but definitely it's a most try restaurant in downtown Chicago. The service was OK, the server that took our order left and there was a long period of time that we didn't have anyone taken care of our table which is why I'm giving them three stars.
