Mixed reviews of RL so had to check it out myself. Solo date today but had exciting news that needed immediate celebration even if alone. First off very classy, elevated, upper east side manhattan vibe. Old school interior wood and decor. Absolutely loved it. So naturally I wasn't expecting too much from the food.....but boy was I wrong. Needed an iron boost so went all in with oyster appetizer followed by a medium rare prime filet mignon. Oysters were very fresh and vanished in no time. The filet mignon???? Chef's kiss! Perfectly caramelized crust and tender inside. Wow. This also came with a roasted whole garlic which melted into a mash with each bite. Every bite of filet was paired with a garlic clove and enjoyed together. The staffer told me this pairing is new in Chicago which they started to do two months ago. All I can say is thank you. The steak also comes with a side of crispy onion rings which were fabulous. We got seated almost immediately since we have our reservation. It took another 6 minutes from seating before the waiter come and about our drink preference (bottled or tap). The seating was extremely crowded and noisy. Another few minutes before we get our bread baskets. The menu choice is extremely limited. 15 minutes later and still no one taking our order. The specials of the day was only directed to my spouse. Mind you that this was a 2 person reservation only (it's not a big party). I tried the bread basket. I took one bite and decided it is not even worth my effort of chewing, let alone the calories. That cheese crisp is not even crispy with one bite. The bread is not warm and is very dry. The butter is hard chunk cut out. The appetizer is decent. It is under seasoned but at least it is hot and coated correctly. The sauces with it was below average. 30 minutes later, our main is still not in sight. Another 10 minutes, our main came. We got the fried fish and salad with chicken. The dish is much better than the salad. The salad is crispy. The chicken is overly salty and dried. We also got the chocolate brownie, not a fan. As someone has a sweet tooth to put down the fork, you can imagine. Among all the restaurants we tried in Chicago, in terms of ambience, food, and service, Cindy's rooftop and the Shanghai Terrace are so much better. Seriously why can't there be any more good food and service at restaurants like Fred's at Barney's in the old days, or Eleven Madison Park anymore? RL is a really fun experience. The food is fabulous, and the service was good. It's upscale, so you definitely get the feeling of being pampered there. I had heard good things about RL, so when given the chance to have a business lunch here, I was happy to attend. Checking in we were given a table in the main dining room and seated way before this place got completely packed, about 20 minutes later. The dining room reminded me of an upscale RL store, with wood walls, bookcases, and similar upscale library style décor. Service was great... helpful, very professional, and friendly. The menu was filled with many great options and just when I thought I selected what I wanted, our server told us about their specials, which included a sea bass sandwich, so I went for that instead! We started with their pigs in a blanket - They were GOOD!! The mustard that accompanied them really added a nice touch to the flavor and the dough they were wrapped in was flaky and tasty. Next up was a bowl of their tomato bisque, again - RALLY GOOD!! The goat cheese in it added a nice, sharp flavor for each bite. The sea bass sandwich was excellent too! The jalapeño on it added a nice spice and the fish was so very soft, flaky, and flavorful! The bun was incredible too... Overall, a great sandwich! I look forward to returning... Perfect cozy winter spot. We were seated in the main dining room in the beautiful booths. We ordered the RL burger, mini Reuben's and lobster roll. Everything was good - the Reuben's were a fun touch on the menu and perfect for sharing. I did order a glass of wine and I swear it was champagne, but I was able to send it back. I highly recommend getting a martini and the RL burger and enjoy the dimly lit atmosphere of the bar. RL was a fun experience! Our service was excellent and the food was tasty. We enjoyed our drinks as well, but they weren't really unique or special. The downside of this spot is that it is truly the most crowded restaurant I have ever been to. It was claustrophobic and we were literally on top of all of the tables around us. Because of that, we won't be back! If you don't like being super close to others while dining, make sure you avoid this spot. read more

Review is for the bar. Came here for a pre-dinner cocktail with my cousins visiting from Italy. Can you get more American than Ralph Lauren?! Had not been here in years. And I mean many years! Went here for dinner with some of my wife's work colleagues. We got seated easily but were rather crowded at the table and things are situated pretty close together. Ordered cocktails and as I wasn't very hungry, ordered the oyster appetizer and the lobster bisque. The oysters were west coast Kumamoto and were perfect. I prefer smaller oysters. Not in all my life have I ever seen shrimp that big in a shrimp cocktail. Seriously--you could make a meal out of just that, and honestly, I probably should have. But I have no chill and kept ordering... and ordering. I followed it up with the crab salad, which was absolutely delectable--fresh, flavorful, and beautifully plated. And then, because I clearly have no self-control, I went for the chocolate layer cake. It was so good and came with a soft, dreamy dollop of cream on the side. The only semi-negative thing I have to say is that our appetizers did come out almost 45 minutes after ordering, however the restaurant was busy (so that could be the reason). Other than that, 10/10!! Great experience in every other way, will be back! Lastly, I think this goes without saying as it is Ralph Lauren, Ambiance? 10/10!!! We sat right in front of the fireplace, which I was hesitant about since it was also near the door, but RL is very intentional. While in town, stopped here for lunch on a Friday. Made reservations for 2:15 and checked in about 5 after 2. Simply put - this place is an ant hill, folks crawling over each other, each believe they are more important than the last one. Atmosphere is very plush which dark wood, framed photos on the walls, etc. We were finally sat and made a drink order. I went with an old-fashioned which was good. They added table bread for us, and I went with a lobster bisque. They serve it in front of you with lobster meat in the bottom, and pour the soup over top it. Good flavor. I went with a burger for my meal - and as I write this I think I ate more burgers this trip than I have all last year combined. Anyway. Good flavor, bacon was a nice touch and cooked properly to temp. I added the chocolate cake as a dessert which was rich. Had the chance to dine here on a recent visit to Chicago. I've had the opportunity to dine at the NYC polo bar as well so will provide comparison. RL restaurant in chicago was a relatively easy reservation compared to nyc. Similar atmosphere/decor. It is nice that you can walk in and sit at the bar in chicago (not the case in New York). The menu is fairly similar, small differences in items between the 2 locations. The service is phenomenal but the NYC staff is just a bit better. The vesper martini was delicious. We shared escargot and lobster rolls to start which were delicious. The RL burger did not disappoint and I would argue was better than the NY equivalent. For dessert had the NY cheesecake which came with blueberries and it was amazing. Highly recommend. Would go back. read more

It truly is a vibe in there and the vibe is fab. Service was top notch, very attentive, polite, and quick. They start you off w a bread basket filled w yummy sourdough bread and Parmesan crisps. I got a cappuccino that was excellent and the special for lunch of ahi tuna. The ahi tuna came on a bed of seaweed salad and avocado and was quite honestly one of the best ahi tuna's I've had. This is one of my favorite restaurants although a few things have gone a little downhill since the pandemic. The bread option that I like wasn't available. The waiter said sometimes they get it and sometimes they don't. Our food took a long time to be served. I'm very, very disappointed with the key lime pie. It used to be the best in the city, but no more. I love, love, love the calf's liver. The drinks are amazing. Our server lacked in enthusiam and was quite blunt. Booked a reservation for early in the evening (Main dining room). Was seated right next to the busser area/entrance and was constantly run into my whole meal. Meanwhile there were many other seating options. We ordered a few cocktails which are hard to miss at RL restaurants and were good. Food - I would equate to a tourist trap being a local to downtown chicago this does not live up to price and is no where compared to the NY location. I have been to numerous upscale restaurants all around chicago and have not had such a poor experience as I did here. Food was very "mid". I will finish with Ambiance, it was terrible as we were seated next to the busser area and constantly had dirty plates and butts in my face standing around the bar area meanwhile a handful of other available tables that were not given to us. If you are a local there are many better spots for either the same price point or very close. (Literally any Hogsalt is light years better) Overall very poor experience and felt like was not truly taken care of. Specials of the day were not shared nor an offer to walk through the menu. Handsome and clubby space. We sat in the lounge area near the fireplace. Very nice. Lobster Bisque and Filet (10oz) wwee perfect; also and excellent bread service. Enjoyed a bottle of Ridge Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel ($90). Service (Spencer) was professional but personable. She's a real asset. Not unusual, but the experience at the host desk was unpleasant and not commensurate with the goals of the establishment. Seemed like a poorly trained young girl with little experience or enthusiasm.
