I just did a work lunch at Grill on 21 - a very good restaurant! It's located on the 21st floor (hence the name), and has a bar, lobby and huge dining area in addition to private dining rooms for big groups. I had the salmon entree for lunch - delicious! I really like the lemon sauce they use, the portion of salmon is generous as well. The workers are all very friendly, if you want a nice work lunch downtown, I'd recommend Grill on 21. read more

I absolutely love Restaurant Week in Chicago. For me, it is a time to discover new restaurants, sort of like an interview to see if they will be "hired" to fall into my rotation of places to dine at. Grill on 21 (GO21) came out the gate in a blaze of glory and got the job done. To the other restaurants on my list for this year, y'all better bring your A game because GO21 not only delivered, but has set that bar high for me. GO21 is located on that weird little stretch of south LaSalle street, between Adams and Jackson, literally about one block long. There is valet parking, but there is also street parking if you choose to do so. Entry to the restaurant is on the 21st floor, which is cute. Once you get off the elevator and turn to your left, you can see the restaurant and bars. I noticed some separate dining areas that I am assuming are for private functions. There was a lovely woman at an desk that I assumed was the check-in for the restaurant, but it was not. However she was kind enough to point me in the right direction to my people. The overall vibe was elegant, but chilled. There were booths on all three sides of tables down the middle of the room we were in, which was perfect as me and The Queen had an extra chair to put our furs. GO21's Restaurant Week menu was on point for me, which is one of he reasons I selected them. Dinner was $60 and offered three courses (starter, entrées and dessert) below: Starters: Lobster Bisque, Oyster Rockefeller and a Wedge Salad. Entrée: Roasted Chicken (crispy potato, baby squash, truffle chicken jus), Short Rib Cassoulet (Cannellini beans, fennel sausage, escarole, garlic broth) and Ora King Salmon (spiced carrots, dill, crème fraiche). Dessert: Beignet (Taza guajillo chocolate, spiced cinnamon) and Carrot Cake (cream cheese frosting, pineapple & carrot compote). We all got the Lobster Bisque as a starter, but I also got an order of the Oyster Rockefeller. Those came six to an order and trust me, that is plenty as that is a heavy appetizer. The oysters were of a nice size, so there was plenty to split between me and The Queen (not a favorite of The Doctor). The Lobster Bisque was very nice, subtle in taste but not flavorless. The pastry puff reminded me of a mini biscuit in looks, but it was delicate in looks. We were very happy about the amount of lobster floating in the bisque. I know traditionally lobster is added to the bisque at the end, but I have had this at other places and they don't always do that, or I assume they blend it into the bisque for flavor. For dinner, me and The Queen got the Short Rib Cassoulet and The Doctor got the Ora King Salmon. I am a sucker for Short Rib meat and love a good Cassoulet, so this dish was a winner for me, hearty on a cold night. The short rib was tender, and although Aramis brought us knives, there was no need to use them, the meat was that tender. The only thing missing for me with this dish was some cornbread. I love beans and meat when cooked like this, but some cornbread just makes it perfect. Because of the size of the bisque and the Oyster Rockefeller, The Queen and I got our dish to go so we could save room for dessert. The Doctor thoroughly enjoyed his dish because once again, he maintained his membership in the Clean Plate Club. Dessert was wonderful. The beignets were very good, although not shaped like those you get in Nawleans, but that did not impact the taste. I was not going to try the Taza guajillo chocolate sauce as I like my beignets plain, but I tried a little and it was on! It was almost like a mole, me and The Queen both detected a little heat at the end. It was so good that I ended up getting The Doctor's cup of sauce and using it on my beignets. Well done! Aramis was our server and he was a delight the entire night, very attentive, not too chatty but enough to make it fun chatting with him. When he asked how we were enjoying the Cassoulet, I told him it was great, but some cornbread would have been kismet, he laughed and said he knew exactly what I was talking about. Service overall was great. I did not get the names of the person serving bread or the one that brought our food out, but they were attentive as well, so I tipped each of them $20. I know most places pool tips, but I like for folks to know that I appreciate that extra something they do to make my meal enjoyable. We also got a chance to chat with Chef Brendan Leahy so I could compliment him on a meal well done, and to say that those beignets should be on the menu as a regular item. He was super cool and didn't hesitate when I asked if I could get a photo of him with The Doctor. There was another gentleman named Lucas that stopped over to speak to us and to see how our meal went. Overall GO21 rocked their menu and the portions were amazing! I'm leaving this as a walk out the door of the restaurant. I ordered the steak frites and it was genuinely impossible to chew and the taste was awful. I can usually look past the taste and I'm not a complainer and always feel awkward complaining anyways. But I was like, ehhh, I'll say something kindly. So I told the waitress, "everything is great but the steak is almost impossible to chew" and she proceeded by saying "it's a hanger steak and it's cooked medium well so that's how it is. If it was filet it would be tender". Then she proceeded to walk away and avoid us for 30 min until it was time for the bill hahah. They didn't try to fix the meal, bring something new, or even remove it from the final bill. Ohhh and I didn't eat it at all...just had the fries on the side. Anyways, nice place, good live music, waitress was initially nice...but the moment they needed to step up and assist a customer, they flopped big time. This restaurant is located on the 21st floor on top of the JW Marriot which happens to be the entrance of the Autograph Marriott Hotel. The doorman greeted me, then escorted me to the tables. He kindly toured the restaurant and proceeded to let me know. All of the items that on the menu were curated and service was impeccable. I was only there for happy hour. I ended up going with the crab cake and a glass of wine. I was very impressed with the service the bartender gave me along with great tips for places to go in Chicago. Update: The day after I posted this review, the restaurant contacted my colleague to apologize and acknowledged that the situation was handled incorrectly. They told her they are retraining their staff as a result of what happened and also refunded 50% of our bill. I appreciate them taking responsibility and making this gesture. While it doesn't change our experience that evening, I appreciate their follow-up and their effort to make things right. I was in Chicago for work on Tuesday, August 18, and two colleagues and I went to Grill on 21 for an early dinner. We were staying at the Midland, so the location was very convenient, and we were genuinely looking forward to the experience. We arrived around 5:30 p.m. and were quickly seated at a table as the restaurant was not busy at that time. Our server, Erik, asked if we wanted wine, and when I asked for a recommendation, he suggested the most expensive glass of white wine on the menu. I jokingly explained that although we were on a company expense account, ordering that wine would leave little room for dinner. It was simply my way of saying we had a budget. Unfortunately, the tone of the evening seemed to change after that. The three of us ordered dinner salads and several sides to share rather than individual entrées. The food was good and there was more than enough for three people. We each had two drinks. At times Erik was polite and engaged, but at other times he seemed irritated. The biggest issue happened when we were ready to leave. When the check came, I placed my colleague's credit card inside the leather check holder. Since there was no slot at the top, I placed the card on top of the bill and closed the holder. My other colleague saw me do it. Erik picked up the holder and walked away quickly. A few minutes later, Erik returned and said we had not given him the credit card. I was certain that I had. He asked me to check my pockets. My colleagues and I spent at least 20 minutes retracing our steps and searching the restaurant, using our phone flashlights and getting down on our hands and knees to look under tables. What was particularly frustrating was that we did not feel the restaurant staff were genuinely helping after their initial search, and we never saw a manager during that time. At one point, a busser came over, and when I explained what had happened, he commented, "Haste makes waste," referring to the way the check had been handled. That certainly summed up what we believed had happened. Eventually, because so much time had passed and our evening had been completely derailed, I used my credit card to pay for the meal. As we were leaving, a manager finally approached us and said they would contact us if they found the card while moving tables and sweeping later that evening. He said they were "90% sure" they had dropped it somewhere. I explained that I was 100% sure they had. Around 10 p.m., my colleague received a call that the restaurant had found the card. She returned the following morning to retrieve it, and even then the hostess spent about 15 minutes trying to determine where the card was before returning it. There was no apology from the restaurant. Mistakes happen. Cards get misplaced. What made this experience so disappointing was how the situation was handled. We felt as though we were being treated as if we had done something wrong. Once it was clear the card was missing, I would have expected a manager to get involved, help with the search, take responsibility for the situation, and at the very least apologize afterward. We had really looked forward to dining at Grill on 21, and the food was good. Unfortunately, the service and especially the handling of the missing credit card completely overshadowed the meal. Given the time we spent searching, the stress involved, and the fact that my colleague ultimately had to cancel her card, I believe the restaurant should have offered to comp the meal or at least made a meaningful gesture to acknowledge what happened. It's especially disappointing because the restaurant is conveniently located near our company's Chicago office. We will not be returning, which is a shame because this could have been a very different review if the situation had simply been handled with better customer service and accountability. read more

I tried it myself and couldn't believe it. When we mentioned it to the waitress she said that the cut of steak is a hangar and if we wanted something tender we should have ordered a fillet. Most hotel restaurants are generic and provide food simply for convenience. This is not one of them. The sitting area, bar and dining area are nicely decorated and furnished, a slight notch below higher end steak houses (like STK, Capitol Grill). Most patrons, like myself, were dressed business casual. Hostess was welcoming and friendly, and water order taken and filled immediately. The server was eager to answer any questions and offer suggestions. When I couldn't decide between two soups, he offered a taste of one, without prompting. I ordered the lobster bisque - on the saltier side but delicious flavor. Not too much sherry, and the lobster pieces were the perfect size for multiple spoonfuls. Just wish there were more. Wedge salad with grilled shrimp added - crisp lettuce and generous tangy blue cheese, creamy dressing and smoky bacon pieces. The grape tomatoes had a burst of sweetness and the shrimp was grilled perfectly. My favorite part of the meal came in the complimentary bread basket: a pop over. Our waitress, April was attentive just a little standoffish and in a hurry. My meal, wedge salad was pretty good, crumbles a bit sharp/puckering. Steak frites was set on mashed potatoes and outside the sauce the steak was bland. They paid attention and kept an eye on us. Each time I finished a dish, there was someone nearby to grab it. The food was great. The lobster bisque had actual pieces of lobster and lemme tell ya ,.. they weren't stingy. The pieces were so large I cut them to even them out as I ate. The bisque was thick and creamy. The flavors were there. Oh! My friend and I didn't need the salt or pepper the entire visit. That's a first for me Poke bowl- fresh raw tuna and salmon. Couldn't miss it. It was on the sweet side for me but I appreciated the portion size. I was able to finish it and still feel energetic and not weighed down. The salmon was a large portion. Usually restaurants give thin or skinny slices of salmon and attempt to ration you out with starches or veggies. Not here. They also gave butternut squash and sweet potatoes. I loved the variety of veggies given to elevate the flavor of the perfectly crisped salmon. My heavens honey pannacotta did what it needed to do! Mmmkay! Very rich and didn't taste like gelatin. Grill on 21 is a beautiful restaurant located on the 21st floor of the La Salle hotel. Location is right on the edge of the financial district. We decided to come here for our last meal of restaurant week because we wanted to try something different. I wish we would've looked at coming here for dinner because the menu seems divine. For starters we got the lobster bisque, which came with old Bay season croutons. The lobster bisque was really good and you could actually see chunks of lobster included in the soup. For brunch we got the steak and eggs, which is included potatoes and toast. The steak was good and was served with a delicious chimchuiri sauce. The last item in our brunch for restaurant week was cheesecake. Overall just a really nice set up and well worth the money spent. I really like this restaurant and would come back for dinner for sure or even to bring people for drinks that are from out of town. Went here on a friday night and this place was amazing. When we first walked in, it was quite empty at 8pm so we had some iffy thoughts but this place turned out to be a hidden gem. It was also very quiet when we walked in but thankfully music started playing around 8:30pm. About the food, the grilled Octopus was absolutely amazing. Ordered from here through room service at the hotel. The egg, game and cheese croissant was excellent but a little watery so it made the croissant soggy. The potatoes were a bit cold and some pieces didn't taste fully cooked. The berries with lemon cream were also very good. The creme was extremely light! We have free breakfast here from my hotel and that's the only decent tasting thing. Otherwise everything else we tasted was real bland. Even my mister's drink was horrible. We only ate here the first 24hrs of arriving and I wouldn't do it again unless I was starving. Lol The only good thing was their customer service. The people who helped us were really nice. I would go back any time to just enjoy once again the beauty of the place itself. That black marble surrounding the whole place and the quality of the finish are just astonishingly stunning! Service is good. Not great. But solid good. I would not think the servers are long-term professionals. They seemed to be properly trained young staff that probably rotates a bit. How to tell? Their shallow understanding of their wine list! Yet, nothing to complain about their service. The very large disappointment is their food. Everything was kind of decent. But the price tag is rather for high-end food. So, big mismatch there. We were on a business dinner with little restrictions on budget. Yet, nothing of what we had was worth the stop there. Oysters were quite tasteless. The appetizers were nothing creative. Their steak was way worse than what I would get from a steakhouse chain. No aging whatsoever. It tasted as if it came straight from the butcher. Little flavor as well. Their pannacotta was a joke. What I love about this dessert is actually its texture. This one came with no consistency. Felt more like we were having yogurt. The absolute zero goes to their espresso. Hot water and powder. Disgusting way of closing a dinner. The place a great potential. It really looks spectacular. Thankfully we were too tired to get to the caviar place on time and we ended up in this place. It is the land of yes, we love yes. I was brought to Grill on 21 for a business dinner and found a hidden gem. There were 7 in our party. We were seated quickly and had plenty of space but also were close enough for easy conversation. The dining room has a modern, art deco feel to it. We started with cocktails. I had the Cloud 21 which was a vodka based raspberry drink. It was served in a champagne coupe glass and had three freeze dried raspberries floating in it. It was enjoyable and something I'd order again. We also had some red wine from NAPA. I'm not a huge red wine fan but it was enjoyable. We then ordered appetizers - oysters on the half shell, the roasted shrimp dish, and burrata. The table also had soft bread with whipped butter and and olive tapenade. I didn't have the burrata but it was plated beautifully and the other items were delicious. For dinner I had the chicken served with whipped sweet potatoes and sautéed shaved Brussel sprouts. The dish was also beautifully plated. The chicken was a touch dry but enjoyable. The table also ordered a side of whole Brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. I tried both and thought they were good. For dessert we tried the chocolate tart and vanilla cake. Both were beautifully plated. I'm a chocolate lover but thought the vanilla cake was the better dessert. It was like a ricotta cake and was served warm (maybe a little too warm at first) but it was the one item I'd definitely return for. A fine hidden establishment that is a welcome site for weary travelers staying at the hotel. Outside the context of the hotel, there are well established better options within walking distance. Friendly and professional service and a limited but delectable menu does not balance out, for me, that they managed to invite fruit flies to a party on the 21st floor of an otherwise upscale building in the heart of the financial district. A small dining room that is beautifully decorated sits beside a semi-open kitchen. The bar area blends into the hotel reception with a side party room and limited corporate-flavored lounge seating. [tips] -The restaurant is located on the 21st floor -Pair your dessert with black coffee -Plan your time ahead if you come during lunch hours as it gets busy (highly recommend to make a reservation) From the beginning to end of our visit to Grill 21, the service was friendly and polite. My guest and I felt heard. I can't pick a favorite. The lobster bisque was a good way to warm up my stomach for the salmon as it was flavorful.
