I am very pleased to report, while not cheap, Pochos breakfast is not a crime. For those who don't follow my reviews with religious fervor, here are the cliff notes: I believe places that charge $14.95 for two unsalted eggs, two bacon strips, a spoon of potatoes, and maybe a dry pancake are committing highway robbery. I ordered the Chicken French Toast with Habanero Maple (who is surprised, let's see some hands in the air). If I permit myself to be 'that guy', it wasn't perfect, but it was still something I'd happily order again. The piece of chicken was large enough that 'massive' is not an inappropriate term. Despite its size, it was cooked and seasoned well, tender inside, and hot and crisp on the outside. The Challah French Toast was delightful! The Challah had a light sweetness and a lovely custardy interior, for the most part, at least. One of the quibbles I have is the inconsistency of the slices. One was the thickness of two fingers, and another the thickness of my pinky. The result is that the custard didn't quite penetrate to the center. I'd also like to point out that it didn't have the crunchy exterior a technically perfect French toast has. I'd also like to award massive brownie (toasty?) points for the housemade compound butter and the habanero maple syrup. The latter especially brought some unexpected punch! When it comes to their service, it was quick, friendly, and attentive. More than that, the food came out faster than I expected, a pleasant surprise especially given that nothing had spent time under a lamp. Finally, I need to introduce the elephant in the room, [deep breath] the prices. On the surface, $22 for a piece of chicken and some eggy bread, and $5 for coffee is on the steep side. I cannot negate that. However, the quality helps make up the difference. Case in point, instead of using unbranded-diner-bean-water, Pochos uses Dark Matter coffee, strong and tasty stuff! Final verdict: Pochos may not enter my regular rotation, due to both their location and prices. However, I found myself planning a return trip before finishing my meal, which is a definitive indicator of a great experience. read more

The steak is perfectly seasoned and charred, still pink in the middle, and so plentiful it spills out with every bite. The red sauce has that deep, slow-cooked chile flavor that makes your eyes roll back, the cheese pulls for days, and the cold crunch of the lettuce and tomato cuts through the richness like a miracle. I mopped up every last drop with their fluffy Mexican rice and smoky refried beans like a man possessed. Portions are comically huge, prices are stuck in the 90s, and the vibe is pure family-run joy: bright colors, soccer on the TVs, and abuelitas in the kitchen who've clearly been making this exact plate for decades. The staff treats you like you're the 100th cousin they're thrilled finally showed up for dinner. Pochos isn't chasing trends. They're just quietly serving one of the best plates of enchiladas in the entire city, maybe the country. That "all the way" with steak is now permanently tattooed on my soul. I'm already trying to invent reasons to drive back across town tomorrow. Five stars is an insult. Get in the car right now. Updated Review: Decided to post an update for one of my favorite spots in the city, Pocho's. I always love coming back and finding that everything is just as delicious as the last time. Very cool welcoming atmosphere, and if you're in the front, they have a lot of natural light. Pocho's still has some of the best empanadas in the city. On my last visit, they had a special French toast that was so pretty I had to take a picture. The staff is always warm, friendly, and helpful. My sister and I have been coming here for years, often bringing our family along, and it's always a great experience. I ran into one of the owners the night before and decided to stop by the next morning for breakfast. I was pleasantly surprised the food was still just as flavorful and satisfying as ever. Amazing, amazing food!! Came to visit Chicago and was originally going to go to a different place for brunch but then found this place and decided to give it a try! The wait was not bad, given that it's a tiny place! We probably waited 20 minutes before being seated. The staff was friendly and super helpful answering any questions I had. We ended up getting some chilaquiles - omg! These are the best chilaquiles I've ever had at any restaurant!!! I got the verde chilaquiles con pollo and the chicken was hella dry. The tortilla and salsa verde was reallly good. Beans nothing special. Next time, I'd try the chicken sandwhich. They gave a huge portion of chicken and my friend enjoyed it a lot. This place is good but not sure if the price is justified. Yummy! A quick Pisces Szn pop out to celebrate birthdays. I was in need of mimosas without having a reservation. A random Sunday Funday was in need. I ended up dining here, and it was well worth it. It was super cute and quaint in the inside. Bright upbeat and photo ready-esque. The vibe was right. The server who was a Pisces, that serviced us was super sweet and knowledgeable of the menu. What a cute place for brunch. I will say that it is not your traditional Mexican breakfast and the price is a little steep but I know that it was worth it for what I was in the mood for. Pochos appears to be part of a new wave of restaurants in Pilsen that honor the legacy of the community in the area while offering some of the finishings that might appeal to those just passing through. It reminded me of some of the brunch places I had frequented in Guadalajara, but as a comparison, it was not quite up to CDMX standards. The cafe de olla was the best thing we ordered and perfectly spiced. The chilaquiles verdes had a good texture to the tortillas and went well with a runny egg. I had a nice time here chatting with friends after some outdoor activities at the park nearby. I got the Breakfast BLT which was mid. I asked for the house salad on the side but they gave me potatoes instead which isn't a big deal but the potatoes also lacked flavor and crispiness. I wish the BLT made up for it in flavor but it was consistent and I had to douse everything in tapatio. The sourdough bread was also mid and I was missing the sour part of sourdough. My friend lives in Chicago and had eaten here before. She enjoyed the meal so she brought us during our visit for the weekend. I don't believe they take reservations and since it was Sunday morning they were busy. We put our names on the list and the Toast app tracks where you are in the order of guests. After 25 minutes passed, the Manager came out to tell us our table would be 2 minutes. The app seemed to have a delay or just never updated. We got seated and the restaurant is cozy. It goes back past the kitchen but not a big room. Our server was really bubbly and welcomed us as 1st timers. We ordered a starter - Avo Toast and breakfast entrees - Fried Chicken & French Toast, Pocho Burger and the Chicken Chilaquiles. Everything was delicious and came out fast. We digged into the Avocado Toast so no pic! The portions are pretty big for entrees so come hungry. We didn't try the cocktails but they look very interesting. They also don't carry decaf coffee but the sparkling lemonade & fresh lemonade hit the spot. I'll definitely return and enjoy the local flavors. I stopped by Pochos recently and ordered their Cuban sandwich with fries, and I was really impressed with the quality. The Cuban was excellent - the meat was incredibly tender and juicy, which can be hard to find. You could tell they took care in preparing it. I've been rocking with them since i lived in my old hood in McKinley Park and they were a block away and was so happy to learn they were moving closer to my new place near Pilsen. SOLID breakfast choices .Chilaquiles ,shakshouka, rajas omelette and chicken and waffles are all standouts. My fiancée loves their seasonal roasted veggie and eggs breakfast. The aesthetics in this place are cute! That's probably the nicest thing I can say about this spot. The food? Decent. The service? didn't make up for the decent food. I went with a party of five and I ordered the AvoBravo Burger. The rest of the orders were 3 chilaquiles, and a chicken burger. I would say for a Mexican food spot it felt very white-washed. And the food was decent at best. Coming from a person who doesn't like Burger King, I could get a better burger from Burger King for cheaper. For the portions of the food I would have expected the food to be quicker. The service was also not the best. The area is too small to have people to wait inside, so they make you wait outside (for 25 minutes), that however isn't one of my biggest problems. 1) On the check they automatically included 20% gratuity, even though on the online menu says, "Gratuity automatically included for parties LARGER than 5." not "Gratuity automatically included for parties 5 AND LARGER." Which I didn't upfront complain about, but did put me a bit off. 2) Towards the end of our meal, my family was talking about a sensitive topic towards us. When we finished we were still talking about said topic, and comforting my mother while she was tearing up at the topic. At the same time our server came over and told us that we had to leave, because they had to prepare for another party. So we left and made no complaint. But I thought the whole situation was disrespectful considering the circumstances. So they like I said the inside is cute, the service and food? Decent at best. Would not come for big parties.
