Honestly it is a solid 1 star review, the staff were ok, our server was nice enough and friendly, he never mentioned how much extra would be to add a steak (protein option) and the bill was very unexpectedly high, we tried to asked and they just brushed it off and said yeah it is what it is.... . The steak came out first it was super dry and looked like it had been sitting in the kitchen for awhile, It was Genuinely dry and again he was nice enough to replace it for us but for $26 defiantly no way worth it. To be fair, we've been here before and absolutely LOVED it. However, this past visit on 6/19 was rather problematic. After we sat down, our server took her sweet time getting to us and was largely absent the entire visit while the servers for the others tables were attentive and present as I've come to expect. We started with the Crispy Brussels and Burrata Toast which was an amazing and fun combination of flavors textures with the sherry glaze and pickled onions providing a perfect counter to the richness of the cheese. Our second course was the Gage Caesar which we've had before and have enjoyed sharing multiple times, but this time the lettuce was full of grit as if the prep chef did not even bother washing the lettuce. The server never came by to check on us so I had to wave the manager to complain about the salad. The server also never checked to see if we wanted refills on our cocktails so we placed our orders with the manager. The final dish was the venison burger which was perfectly cooked and seasoned if you like venison, which I do so we enjoyed that greatly. The condiments that came with it were perfectly matched to balance the game of the meat and the fries were perfect as usual! The server then FINALLY got more involved with our dinner and was predictably perky and present at the end, something that always irks me when they have been otherwise absent for the meal. The ONLY reason they are getting 3 stars instead of less for this visit was the flavor of the food and the response of the manager in dealing with the lack of service (and the gritty salad). I've been coming here after visiting the art institute or before the symphony for the last 14 yrs. I've had brunch, lunch, and dinner and I've never had a meal to complain about. My kids love the fish n chips and I love the curry poutine. After not finding a single poutine I liked in Quebec, I just figured I disliked poutine. Turns out, the only one I like is at the Gage. The last time I was here, my daughter asked for her egg on the side of her avocado toast. It mistakenly arrived on the toast. I enjoyed all the food we received, it was tasty, warm, fast, and you get a good portion. The lobster roll was good, the lamb was good and the zucchini was as well! Ordered the Prime Steak Au Poivre with jalapeño add-on for pickup. Placed the order online, ready in about 25 minutes, walked in and grabbed it. The steak came out medium rare, leaning on the rarer side, but I'm not complaining. The pepper sauce is good but at $72 I was hoping for a little more fresh pepper to cut through the buttery base. Felt like it could've been abit bolder. The fries are nothing special but do their job alongside the steak. Nice touch that they included vinegar and ketchup on the side. One to-go specific note, the jalapeños came pretty solidified in butter, which isn't great unless you can heat them up right away. Probably a non-issue dining in, but worth knowing if you're ordering out. Good food and smooth pickup experience overall, just go in knowing the prices are on the higher end. read more

Folks visiting The Gage will not settle for okay food and average service. And they're willing to pay for quality because it's either an "occasion" or the tab is being picked up with a company card. We visited on a Saturday morning for brunch, and everything about the visit was on point. The service was friendly and prompt. She knew the menu and made fantastic recommendations. The space itself is clean and inviting - nice enough for a business dinner, but casual enough for jeans and a hoodie. The food and drinks were all delicious, and the price point was exactly where it should be for a sit-down, table service restaurant in the heart of the city. It gets crowded here, so reservations are a good idea. Usually there's a reason if a restaurant has been around for a while and you constantly need to make a reservation. Ordered the orchard apple salad and coconut curry with chicken, but they had other very appetizing selections just had to hold off on until my next visit. The orchard apple salad was divine. Crisp Michigan green apple slices in alternating layers with baby kale and friséez. Sprinkled with crunch almonds and super sharp cheddar, and seasoned with delicious mustard vinaigrette. Sooo incredible. A must try. The coconut curry was just perfect with the winter weather. You get a choice of chicken, salmon, shrimp or steak for extra charge but totally worth it. Added the chicken which was perfect selection. The curry is made with squash, bokchoy, and oyster mushroom (exceptional curry) with a squeeze of lime. Oh yes and the curry comes with udon noodles but I believe you can order rice on the side. Plenty of curry to add to rices I also ordered a nonalcoholic beverage. Can't recall exactly what it was called but very crisp and refreshing spritzer. Everything about this place was incredible. Highly recommend. Will be coming here more often. Also their bar is amazing. Great date place for sure #2 visit in just one week. Again fantastic. Had the venison burger and French onion soup. Absolutely delicious. Was torn between the cheeseburger versus the venison burger, and glad I took the advice of my server. The venison burger was perfect. We've been to The Gage many times over the years since it's one of our top sit-down spots near Symphony Center before or after concert. Our favorite dish is definitely the PEI mussels. The broth is the kind you want to keep dipping bread into and practically lick off your fingers afterward -- flavorful, savory, and a little briny without being the heavy creamy type of sauce that some places do. Very comforting but not overly rich. Honestly, I don't even remember all the other dishes we've ordered over the years, but our experiences have consistently been good. I am doing this review on the gauge during a dinner that we had recently as a large group on a week night. I had previously been to the gage well over 12 years ago for an informal lunch. And it was absolutely delicious and memorable back then. Coming back so many years later, it's so great to see them still in business and doing very well. I understand the menu changes quite often but it's really great to still see some of the English influence food menu items on the menu such as a scotch egg and fish and chips. We were a party of seven and they were able to accommodate, and luckily, despite all the tables and chairs it wasn't that crowded to move around. However, all the tables were completely filled for a Tuesday night during restaurant week. No one at the table ordered restaurant week menu however I did manage to get only two photos because everyone at my party eats their food immediately. The scallops were cooked perfectly well and were very nice and fresh and the brussels sprouts on the toast with Barada was quite decadent as well. I would definitely come back here again if I was in the area and it's great to see it doing so well. read more

My table for tow was very close to another table for two. The larger woman seated across from my daughter had nerve to have another woman come sit next to her making her table a table for 3. Had dinner at the Gage two nights during my last visit to Chicago. The first night was a business event downstairs, where I had a beautifully cooked fillet. One of the best steaks that I've had in a long time. My second visit was with my wife where we sat upstairs in a dimly lit booth while Stephanie took care of us. I had a classic martini and my wife had a dirty vodka martini while we shared a scotch egg. The creamy yolk of the egg mixed with sausage and mustard was the star of the show. For a main, I went less formal and had the Cheeseburger Royale, perfectly cooked, but fairly one-note in flavor. My wife ordered the coconut curry and added shrimp for some substance. The curry was delicately light and filled with huge pieces of bok choy that would have been easier to eat if cut down a bit. The overcooked shrimp were a bland disappointment at $21 for three under-seasoned pieces. Service was great and the prices were fair. A good experience all around. read more

This place has an array of different seating areas, places where you want to be seen, and not seen. Plates are monogrammed which gives a hint of bougie vibes but best of all, the wait staff doesn't come with the attitude for this type of spot. Right across from the Chicago Art Institute and close to Millennial Park, you get a wide view of the heart of the city, so it's a great spot for locals to take their tourist friends when visiting Chi town. Because we went during the winter, the drinks menu included warm cocktails, which is appreciated given the weather outside (it snowed after lunch that day). I ordered the lobster roll that came with a side of fries. Ah-mazing! The lobster was fresh, no added mayo to cover up the crab flavor, the added celery was crisp and gave the sandwich that extra crunch. Some zesty lemon balanced out the butteriness of the roll itself. But the true star of this dish was the hot fries -- golden crispy on the outside and buttery soft on the inside. I had them with a side of the garlic aioli which was much better than the side of ketchup it came with. Don't sleep on the fries -- I typically don't finish my friends, but this time around I sent back the plate clean. Beautiful view, good food and drink. Don't sleep on this place. read more
