Oysters ceviche
Josh S.

A solid steakhouse with good ambiance, good food and good drinks. We were here with a large group, and the server was helpful in making sure we had the right amount of food for the group. We had a range of apps, including the olives which some liked and some hated, the tartare which was very good, and the oysters ceviche which was ok. For entrees we had 2 big steaks (vaca vieja and ribeye) which were both solid, and some wagyu which was nice but a little undercooked. The butter with potatoes was great. Overall a solid spot but there's tough competition in the Chicago steakhouse market.

My husband and I treated ourselves for our anniversary and we were not disappointed. They started us with an amuse-bouche and glass of cava while we made food decisions. We went wth the meat experience and I can't say anything disappointed but my favorites were the not your everyday caprese salad and the Spanish Octopus. The steak was very good and they had a wonderful dessert surprise for us. It is a very large room so it became loud at times but did not detract from dinner. I would highly recommend.

Oh my goodness!! Had the most amazing experience for our 20th anniversary. Food was 10/10. I honestly don't know everything I had. Some things were new to me. We had complimentary bubbly drinks and we ordered from a menu that's already planned out. It is $145 per person. Everything was cute and delicious. They brought everything dish out separately with them explaining everything you are having, where it comes from and how the chef suggests you eat it. We ordered a couple different drinks and they were all good. Our waitress Toni was sooo beautiful. I love her! She was very informative on the establishment, food and the drinks. Juan Carlos kept our table clean and our water glass filled. Chris came over to check on us, as he was doing all the tables. He introduced himself, asked about our day, asked how was everything going so far in our visit. He gave us his card, asked what we were drinking and offered another round on him. These people made our anniversary feel like we were local upcoming celebrities lol. It was a great time and definitely will be back again and again. I'm telling my friends now so we can plan double dates. Check this place out yall... be prepared to spend money because it's $100 plus per person at least.

I've been to another Jose Andres restaurant so I knew I was in for something special and this did not disappoint. We had a 7pm show to catch so we did a 5:15 reservation with the theater tasting menu and timing could not be better. The food was so unique and well presented. The olives were a little weird but I appreciate the creativity and will try anything once! The chicken croquettes were the star and we could have eaten 10 more! The steak was cooked to perfection and the sauce plus the coffee "air" make for a perfect flavor combination without overpowering the steak itself. We also added the chocolate souffle and it was everything I could hope for.

Big fans of bar mar so finally got around to trying its meat forward sister restaurant during RW. Ambiance was fun, good energy in the crowd. Service was a little clunky but it's RW so gave them grace. - coffee rub hangar steak - both came out medium rare even though hubby ordered it blue but was still very tender, good flavor and love the cobble rub crust. The foam was fun but didn't last long - potato puree - definitely half butter at least but so good - piquillo peppers - good counter flavor to richness of steak and potatoes - caprese salad - great pop of flavor - ham and cheese - nice flavor and good crisp to it - chicken croquettes - not as good as we remember as this is also in menu downstairs at bar mar - salmon and lox cones were ok, very dairy fwd Old fashioned were nice and strong. Christos the manager was super friendly, showed us around when he showed us to our table and stopped by to check on our table. Will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu.

The Bazaar by José Andrés in Chicago is absolutely superb! Tucked away on the second floor of 120 N. Wacker Drive, this restaurant sits inside a sleek 52-story office tower right in the heart of the Loop, overlooking the beautiful riverfront. The moment you walk in, you're greeted by dramatic crimson chandeliers that look like volcanic flames--bold, fiery, and totally unforgettable. We were seated in a cozy booth piled with comfortable pillows that made the whole space feel both luxurious and welcoming. Then came the menu... and let me tell you, this thing was thick--like opening a novel dedicated entirely to the art of meat. Every page celebrated beef in inventive, mouthwatering ways, from classic ribeye to buttery, melt-in-your-mouth wagyu. Before we even ordered, they welcomed us with a glass of cava, a Spanish sparkling wine that perfectly prepped the palate. We started with their thick-cut patatas bravas--crispy, flavorful, and honestly good enough to be a meal on their own. For our entrée, we didn't waste any time. We went straight for the Bone-In Strip Loin, Washugyu/Angus, 18 oz. Absolutely phenomenal--juicy, rich, and full of robust flavor. We shared a trio of sides: roasted carrots so tender they almost melted like potatoes, vibrant green asparagus, and their buttery potato purée that felt like velvet on the tongue. And of course... dessert. I ordered the chocolate soufflé and wow--pure decadence. Warm, airy, rich, and irresistibly inviting. A perfect, succulent finish to an already incredible experience. If you're looking for a place that treats meat like an art form while giving you a dramatic, fun, and unforgettable dining atmosphere, The Bazaar is the spot. Can't wait to come back!

I am a huge fan of Jose Andres and his vision. We were looking forward to our reservations. Service was good. Our waiter was great. So was the personal touch by the manager to inquire regarding our experience. The decor is beautiful and lovely for a romantic dinner date or group for any celebrations. We chose the prix fix menu. And added W9 and W11 Japanese Waygu. All the appetizers and small plates were excellent - caviar, olives, pesto caprese salad, steak tartare, and octopus. So that just built our expectation for the meats. The mains frankly were a bit disappointing. Good but not great. The wagyu were good cuts but the temperature just wasn't right - medium rare. It came out a bit cold. They did try to correct the issue but still wasn't to our taste. Not expecting it to be Japan perfect but disappointing nevertheless. For the main meat, great flavoring and temperature but we didn't like the cut too much. The dessert was good. A bit more texture/crunch would be great addition.

Bazaar Meat and Bar Mar are co-located in the same building. However, Bazaar Meat is closed on Sundays. Reservations are made through OpenTable, with tasting menu and prix fix options being highlighted over the standard a la carte option. First, how do you get in? There are at least two ways: 1. Enter through the entrance of Bar Mar, and hang a left so that you curl around to the lobby area of the building in front of the elevators. Take the elevator up to Bazaar Meat. 2. Enter through Bar Mar. Go to the blue staircase, which is slightly past the seafood bar, on the left. Walk up the flights of stairs to the Bazaar Meat level (2nd floor). The reverse method also makes a great exit strategy. Someone will greet you and then lead you to your table. As you walk in, you'll pass by their meat aging racks. Their dining room after sunset is mostly a dark, dim brown with indirect lighting. We were seated by a window. The restaurant appeared to be packed, but soon we were greeted by a staff member offering some type of complimentary wine already poured in two glasses. Since none at our table were planning to consume alcohol, we declined, so they offered and brought us a non-alcoholic beverage instead. Downstairs at Bar Mar, portions are generous. Does the same hold for Bazaar Meat? We ordered under the assumption of yes. However, that is an incorrect assumption to make as detailed below. Part of the menu between Bar Mar and Bazaar Meat overlap. We opted to order items not in common. First, two complimentary bites were presented. One was the stuffed olive. The other was a savory baked bite. Next came the set of olives, a total of 5. The first two bites were novel enough before the effect wore off. Jose's Taco came next, and while the flavor was fine, the quantity was disappointing: a slice of their jamón ibérico de bellota atop a roasted piece of seaweed, topped with some caviar. We opted for Pluma Ibérica de Bellota Pork, which was by far the highlight of the dinner. It was topped with chimichurri and a dollop of mojo verde on the side. The pork itself needed no accompaniment. The Coffee-Rubbed Hangar Steak was decidedly less impressive. It came with passionfruit sauce, not even a whole pearl onion, and three clumps of what must have been their "coffee air" foam. Unfortunately, the preparation resulting in a boring flavor for a hanger steak. The restaurant also offers Wagyu and roasted Suckling Pig. I suspect next time I would target the Suckling Pig. We finished off with a baby gem lettuce salad (Ensalada de "Cogollos") which contained 14 gem lettuce leaves and 14 halves of grape tomatoes along with piparra peppers, and green onion shavings. Finally for dessert we opted for the Tarta de Queso. It certainly tasted like cheesecake, though the texture difference between the interior and exterior was not as different as described. It was mostly solid with a tiny center portion that was "soft". After finishing the meal, you'll be given a parting gift at the front: some cheese and caramel corn. This was a nice gesture, and we decided to have it as a snack while walking through Lincoln Park the next day. Service-wise, the staff were all organized, warm, friendly, and attentive. Unfortunately, the quality of service doesn't make up for the preparation of food. Certainly the pork was a standout for me, but everything else had a low flavor to cost ratio. This was a slight disappointment to me when compared to Bar Mar downstairs. I suspect the next time I visit a Bazaar location, the way to go will be much more pork heavy.

My husband and I decided to treat ourselves to a date night at a steakhouse and happened upon Bazaar Meat and I'm so glad we did. From the start we had excellent service and you could tell that our waiter really enjoyed all the food and loved his job. The energy shined through in his service and made the experience top-notch. We started with the Philly cheesesteak, the croquettes, and the patatas bravas. All of them were excellent, but definitely think the Philly cheesesteak was the best out of the three. Then we decided to split a 14 ounce filet which was delicious, with the peppers and mushrooms. Finally, we topped it off with their chocolate soufflé which comes with banana ice cream. It was really good and the banana ice cream was very fresh and tasty. We'll definitely be putting this on my list to come back to when we come back to Chicago.

Poké bowl

So I go to a Chicago steakhouse and order... Poké bowl? What the hell is wrong with me? OK, that list is pretty damn long... Nonetheless... Back to Chicago for work, check dinner places near the downtown JW Marriott, and Jose Andre's restaurant shows up. Why not? I walk over (dear God, I used to live in Wisconsin, but I moved to the West Coast decades ago. It is so dark and cold and blustery in Chicago!! Shiver.). Anyway, very nice place, sat at the bar for a drink or two, ordered the Poké bowl. It was really good! They probably sell one Poké bowl for every 417 steaks, but I can live with that...that's kind of the fish-to-steak ratio I live with as well. Back to steak tomorrow.

What amazing ambiance! The river views are stunning! Service was prompt. Our waiter was condescending and perfunctory, likely because we were an older couple, we did not get the attention the younger couples around us were getting. We hardly saw the waiter. The food was outstanding! We loved the appetizers! The onion soup was the perfect starter. You must try the Philly cheesesteak appetizer( sounds crazy) but it was delicious! Our steaks were cooked exactly as we requested. I found mine salty, but it was dry aged beef so I should have expected it. I loved the intermezzo. The chocolate soufflé and the cheesecake ended the night on an up note! I will definitely be back.

A friend, a self-proclaimed "foodie," invited a group of us to join him at Bazaar Meat to experience as much food and drink as possible. We all found it a very enjoyable experience. I appreciated the focus they place on both their food and their service. We started with wine and cocktails. I found their cocktails to be very well crafted and complex in flavor, even more so on subsequent sips. Because of the "Spanish flair" (my term) here, plates will be brought out as ready. This is interesting compared to more traditional steak houses, where they diligently try to bring all your entrees out at the same time. Since they pride themselves on the quality of their service and food, I'm going to dig a little deeper in things I felt deviated from that - but to me they were more like dings, and things that made me chuckle. I did work several years at a steakhouse which had a focus on service, and I spotted a couple of faux pas one server committed as we proceeded from appetizers to entrees. What amused me was that a minute later, another server, who was checking our table, made a big deal of correcting this. Also, even though meats are sliced into medallions and served family style, several of our entrees were initially delivered to the wrong people (but still easily shared). The cuts of meat were all prepared to order. I found the cuts requested medium were more flavorful than those requested medium rare. My side of Brussels Sprouts had a very interesting presentation - topped with a lime foam - which contributed more to appearance than flavor. Most sprouts rely on some carmelization for flavor - these had the flavor without relying on that. Dessert was equally impressive, my Basque cheesecake had high levels of both taste and presentation flair. I am glad to have had the dining experience here. While I would come back if invited by friends, there was nothing about the experience that screamed to me that I MUST come back.

We each got the Bazaar Meat Experience and it did not disappoint! Started with caviar cones- little cones with black caviar and a creamy filling, spot on! Next came the olives and olive sphere on a spoon. Very green olive forward. Then the caprese salad, charred cherry tomatoes, liquid mozzarella and pesto- so tasty, especially if you like pesto (which we do). OK, halfway there. Classic tartare, which Donna was very leery about, but it was an excellent mix of sirloin, mustard sauce, egg yolk, a touch of anchovy and shiso tempura. How about some Spanish octopus? Turned out to be a highlight, boiled and grilled with small potatoes on a great mojo icon sauce. Now for the steak- black angus ribeye served with buttered potato puree. My only quibble was here- a bit too salty for me, but just right for Donna. I forgot the piquillo peppers at the start. A nicely done little pickled peppers. And lastly, dessert. Honey cake with yogurt, grapes and chestnut ice cream. We were both full but had to eat this! Great finish with the server torching Happy Anniversary on our plate. The service was impeccable, courses came quickly, but not too. Had a nice chat with the sommelier. All in all, a memorable meal and experience.

Bazaar Meat by José Andrés Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Bazaar Meat by José Andrés

Can I use a gibsons gift card?

Yes, it can be used at Bazaar Meat Chicago as listed on Gibsons website

Good for kids?

Not really child friendly. Teenagers should be fine.

Trying to decide if it's worth it to Uber to the restaurant from the hotel or just drive and valet, so how much is valet?

That all depends on the location of your hotel. It's always better to Uber tho especially if you'll be drinking

Does anyone know if they offer free valet?

No. Paid valet only.

What is the connection to Gibsons? I see their name in multiple spots on the menu.

Chicago's Bazaar Meats is a joint venture Between Jose' Andres and Chicago's Lombardo Family (Gibsons). Not sure of the details.

I arrived around 6PM for a table, I was told I could go to the bar for bar seating or get my name on the list and wait. So I went to the bar but surprisingly, there were couple other parties waiting at the bar for a seating too. We actually waited about 45 minutes at the bar for seating, and then I received a text an hour later that a table would be ready. Since I was already seated at the bar, I kept my bar seating and forgo the table. So you might be able to get a table seating if you get your name on the list for a weekday dinner. I have to admit this place felt very dim, it feels darker - I supposed that tis the ambiance of a nicer, upscale restaurant. However, I have to admit they are laxed on the dress code. I don't actually know if there's a dress code although a lot of people are in more business casual/dressy attire. I wasn't in anything dressy though and no one said anything. As for the food, I think it is delicious. So we ordered 2 different steak dishes - the bone in aged rib eye and the steak & frites. I love the pairing salt that comes with it, it really tops it off for the steaks. We also ordered sides -- sides do not come with the steaks, they are purchased separately. However, the creamed spinach and the truffle mac and cheese were amazingly delicious. I still remembered the deliciousness as I am writing this review. The sides definitely tops it off. I think they do an excellent job cooking the steak, I love that they already cut it perfectly for me. This is an excellent steak place, great sides. It can get a little busy/crowded, but service is also pretty good. I think the staff does a good job overall given the craziness of this place. It seems like it is always packed. I see people in their "work attire" come here for drinks too and possibly for a bite to eat. I would definitely recommend this place to others -- if you don't want to wait for a table, plan ahead and book a reservation ahead of time. But this place is "casual" enough for you to stop in to grab some food if you're willing to wait.

Salad: 10/10- amazing flavor and unique. We usually never order salad but this sounded so unique and didn't disappoint - creamy, acidic, perfect appetizer. Fried Chicken: 8/10- above average fried chicken on mashed potatoes. Well spiced but nothing to write home about. Ribeye: 10/10- great steak and honestly not bad pricing. Great crust and flavor, would definitely recommend to split for 2 since it's big. Mac and Cheese: 4/10- pasta was not hot and was undercooked. I usually like al dente but this pasta was hard. It was barely cheesy and was like a alfredo sauce more than cheesy, and the crust on top was lukewarm and stagnant like it had been sitting there. Overall great experience but avoid the mac and cheese.

Prob not fair to Butcher & the Bear that I was in the mood for raviolis. The ambiance is like a speakeasy. They have valet parking. I'd recommend a reservation for dinner--intimate and romantic. This is a steakhouse and while they have other options on the menu, this is the primary reason for my 4-Star review. I don't eat red meat (someone else gifted us the reservation). However, my husband would give 5 stars. I ordered a dirty martini, which was perfect and the blue cheese in the olive was probably the best I've had. I ordered the black cod, a favorite of mine. Now, I'm vegetarian adjacent, mostly because meat kinda grosses me out. The less like meat it is, the better. (This is why you take me with a grain of salt if you love a good steakhouse.) the fish was on the underdone side of my doneness continuum. Just a little slimy for me. Flavor of the miso sauce was good and I liked the grilled bok choy. But I had to choke down the fish. (At $47 I wasn't going to leave it.) I hope you'll try this restaurant if you love meat!

Being from New Orleans, I personally like my Bloody Mary a little spicier and with a little more of that NOLA kick, but this was still a really good option and a fun Korean twist on a classic brunch drink. The food was excellent and gave us plenty of variety. The Korean tray was a great choice, along with the bibimbap and avocado toast. Everything came together really well, and there was enough variety that everyone could find something they enjoyed. I had seen so many positive reviews beforehand, so I came in expecting a much more memorable dining experience. Instead, I found most of the dishes to be fairly underwhelming. The steak fries were enjoyable, there's no way you can mess up meat. Although, I felt that the dipping sauce was what really made the dish. The brussels sprouts lacked overall flavor, and the garlic chive pancakes were noticeably burnt. I have had this dish at other Korean restaurants and have never experienced them being this heavily burnt. I understand that Perilla is a Korean fusion restaurant and that the preparation may differ from what I am accustomed to, but at an upscale restaurant, I feel like the food itself needs to be much more consistent. This is one of those places where the dishes looked beautiful, but unfortunately, the presentation didn't translate into flavor for me. Just because something looks appealing doesn't necessarily mean it's going to taste good, and I think Perilla could really work on that aspect of the menu. Now, the customer service was AMAZING! Unfortunately, I didn't catch either of their names, but the host was welcoming and kind while our waiter was also sososo sweet and attentive throughout our visit. I would honestly give the staff 5/5 stars for their service. They were wonderful, but I don't think it would be fair to give the restaurant the same rating based solely on the service because I can't say the same about the food. I also want to say our server gave us complimentary dessert, how nice! The dessert was actually very yummy, but this is not a dessert spot though LOL. Overall, I really wanted to love Perilla because of all the amazing reviews I had seen, but the food just didn't live up to my expectations. The staff, however, deserves all the love because they were genuinely lovely.

We love it - had one of their fired seafood towers last night and it was incredible (and the touch of adding the pasta at the end was a step above). After receiving the wrong order and waiting an excessive amount of time for our food, we ordered the seafood baller which we were told would accommodate six people. That was absolutely not true. The platter came with maybe three shrimp, barely any scallops, and mussels that were mostly empty shells with no meat inside. It was essentially a large platter of shells and nowhere near enough food for six people. When we asked to speak with the manager, he came to the table while I was in the restroom. Although six other people were sitting there and available to explain the problem, he chose to leave and never returned. Without speaking to us or offering to replace the meal, he took it upon himself to remove the seafood baller from our bill. We weren't looking for free food we wanted the meal we had ordered so we could eat. After sitting there for hours, we still left hungry and somehow had a nearly $700 bill for a couple of sides, two steaks, and drinks. Our server was amazing and did the best he could, but the management and overall level of professionalism were unacceptable. When a guest's order is wrong, management should communicate with the table and make an effort to resolve the problem not simply remove the food without discussing it. We absolutely will not be returning. The experience was nowhere near worth the money.

Went yesterday to celebrate my 40th birthday. The service was impeccable. From the high-five I…read moregot at the Host stand to the well-wishes on my way out the staff made the experience very enjoyable and memorable. Our server, Jacob, was helpful and his recommendation of the Lyonnaise Potatoes did not disappoint. We had the small whale, an aged ribeye sandwich, and I got the filet mignon with bone marrow butter. The chilled seafood was delicious, especially with the house mustard sauce. My partner said the steak sandwich was the best they ever had. The filet was easily the best steak I've ever had though the dry-aged ribeye at Abrasado in Mendoza, Argentina is a close second. The grand martini was a perfect pairing for the chilled seafood. They threw in a complimentary brownie with ice cream for a bday dessert which was appreciated on multiple levels. We're not affluent and a meal like this was definitely a splurge but I have zero complaints and would 100% come back for a comparable special occasion. Everything was perfect and I'll remember this meal forever. Thanks, Joe's!

There are few places that live up to their reputation like Joe's did…read more It resonated the class & energy that you would expect, and was reflected from the start, with every maître d', waiter, busser & even coat check person you encountered within this classic restaurant. The menu had the classic stone crab & shrimp, and of course the stellar steaks, buttressed by seasonal cocktails, entrees & sides that blew my mind. In a world of pretentious hoity toity high scale restaurants that serve morsels like fine art think pieces, Joe's is grounded in the reality of a person's hunger, serving you dozens of ounces of the most perfectly-charred meats and massive shrimps that you've even seen so carefully and thoughtfully cooked & presented. This was especially monumental with the scallops entrée, which were the most impressively executed cooking of one of the most challenging shellfish to cook. The biggest surprise, however, were the pies. After being humbled with the dinner & sides portions, simply reading the diverse array of slices of confectionery heaven made me think--well, there's always room for pie! And as if reading our minds, we had a seasonal pumpkin mousse slice that was equal parts irresistible, yet somehow light enough & so amazingly balanced in its textures and flavors to not make me feel overfull nor overwhelmed. So thank you, staff & management, for surpassing my expectations & your reputation. You've lasted this long by maintaining a level of excellence in every facet of what truly is the crown jewel of Chicago dining. I look forward to enjoying it all again, with any trip back here!

They even print personalized menus with your names for special occasions to take home as a keepsake, which is such a thoughtful touch. The crab cake is a must-order every single time. It is packed with real, sweet lump crab meat without all the heavy breading and flour filler you usually find elsewhere. The calamari appetizer was decent, though compared to the rest of the meal, it was slightly less memorable. For the entrees, the scallops were cooked to perfection with a rich, buttery, melt in your mouth texture. The roasted chicken was also incredible, super juicy and tender on the inside with perfectly crispy, seasoned skin. Since we were celebrating a birthday, they even surprised us with a complimentary dessert to finish the night. Everything was truly flawless from start to finish. Highly recommend for any date night or celebration!
