It's a dark chicago pub looking place with dim lighting and mood lighting, making it look exactly like you'd imagine. We came for walk in at 4 and were told we could sit at the bar immediately or wait for a table. We chose to wait for a table because we weren't fully hungry yet, and got a callback at 5, perfect for us. We ordered the sourdough, crab avocado salad, dry aged ribeye, fried chicken, and mac and cheese. Sourdough: 10/10- ate the entire loaf before we even got the appetizers. Salad: 10/10- amazing flavor and unique. We usually never order salad but this sounded so unique and didn't disappoint - creamy, acidic, perfect appetizer. Fried Chicken: 8/10- above average fried chicken on mashed potatoes. Well spiced but nothing to write home about. Ribeye: 10/10- great steak and honestly not bad pricing. Great crust and flavor, would definitely recommend to split for 2 since it's big. Mac and Cheese: 4/10- pasta was not hot and was undercooked. I usually like al dente but this pasta was hard. It was barely cheesy and was like a alfredo sauce more than cheesy, and the crust on top was lukewarm and stagnant like it had been sitting there. 4.5 experience rounding to 5! Came by for my birthday meal! Tried to get a reservation right when they were available, but system glitched, and couldnt get any, seems like bots? Was planning to walk in at 4:30 and just go from there. Checked reservations a few hours beforehand and seems like they opened up a few or people cancelled. Classic steakhouse. I went at 4pm right when they opened and there was already a line. They're closing for a couple months but I get the feeling there's always a line. I got a seat in the parlor bar downstairs. Tight fit but dark and cozy. The server was friendly and quick with my drink order. I had the ribeye steak frites, medium rare. The food came out about 15 minutes after I ordered, which I would consider fast. The ribeye was very thin, so medium rare was the right call. It ended up being closer to medium. The steak was very tender but a little too lightly seasoned. They provided a salt and pepper rub on the side, which I used with every bite, along with the hollandaise. The fries actually stole the show for me. Crispy, well seasoned. The garlic aioli was perfect. All in for $70. Not a bad solo bar dinner. In and out in an hour. read more

I had to dine at Bavette's in Chicago, and it was absolutely fantastic. The ambiance immediately captivates you and sets the perfect vibe for a late-night outing. I know that this is a steakhouse, but I came for a burger! A Wagyu beef burger at that! After adding an egg and some bacon on, this had to be one of the best burgers I've had, EVER! If the French dip has your attention, you should try that as well to go with the delicious au jus! The fries came with a garlic aioli that has a STRONG garlic, so if you don't like that, sub for ketchup. This place gets busy so make reservations ahead of time, if not your wait time can be hours, unless you choose to sit at the bar which is a first come, first serve basis. The restaurant has a beautiful classic steakhouse atmosphere. Dimly lit, elegant, and full of old school charm. The food was outstanding. The filet mignon was perfectly cooked and incredibly tender, the truffle mac and cheese was rich and indulgent, the short rib stroganoff was packed with flavor in every bite and don't forget the crème brûlée. The most hyped restaurant on the Internet for Chicago absolutely lives up to the hype. Reservations are posted 21 days in advance on Resy at 9am Central Standard Time. These reservations literally don't last 5 seconds. My sister and I were online trying to get reservations and luckily she was able to get 9pm. The best I could do on fastest finger was 10pm. When arriving at the restaurant it looks like a speakeasy inside. There is a hostess stand immediately to the right, and then another right. However, there is a second hostess that is standing in the doorway when you walk in with an iPad that can also check you in. After being checked in we waited about 10 minutes for our table to be ready. Once it was ready the hostess walked us through the restaurant all the way to the back, and then down the stairs into the parlor. It is super dark down there. So dark you are going to need your phone to see the menu and things around you. Shout out to our server Zane as he was a top tier A+ server! All of his recommendations from not ordering a full loaf of bread to steaks to sides were spot on. Up first was the worst item of the night, the $17.95 Mezcal Corpse Reviver cocktail. I wanted a cocktail with mezcal as I like the burnt smoky taste, but this one wasn't it. I really enjoyed my $14 Corazon Cocktail (Dirty Martini). They served it with the 3 blue cheese olives just how I like it. Up first, we had the $6.49 Hand-Made Sourdough bread. This was spot on perfect. We got the smaller order and it was plenty big enough for 2 people, unless you plan on ruining your dinner. Then, we got a $13.99 1/2 wedge salad. Perfectly made wedge salad. I got the $15.99 brussels sprouts and they were exquisite. If they were slightly more charred they would have been perfect. The taste, glaze, and toppings were perfect. I also got an order of the $15.99 button mushrooms. They were very very good as well. For the main course, I had the $89.99 bone in filet mignon. I am a tough steak critic, and this was one of the best steaks I've ever had anywhere. A little plain, and lightly salted, but it was a perfect juicy medium. For dessert we had the $15.99 carrot cake. I did not like this carrot cake as well as Flemings or J Alexanders, but it was certainly very good. The entire meal was over $350, but it was a dang good meal. This is clearly a restaurant you come to on a special occasion. The staff, the experience, and the food certainly were very special. Came here with no reservations (I will for sure make one next time). We hung out by the bar for maybe 45mins-1 hour essentially waiting for this one couple to leave. We finally grabbed seats maybe 1.5 hours in- there were SO many people! I ordered the creamed spinach, truffle Mac, filet with Alaskan crab. My friend ordered a ribeye and the bone marrow appetizer. We also had the avocado crab salad for an appetizer and I would pass on that next time. It was just crab meat literally stuffed in an avocado with lettuce on the side I guess I should have read the menu a bit closer. It was ok, nothing to write home about. Will definitely be returning, great experience, excellent ambiance. The Baked Goat Cheese was excellent, just enough for a family of four. The cheeseburger was excellent, and warmed up well in the toaster oven two days later. Ditto for the French Dip; also great a couple of days later in the microwave. I hated the Ghia Spritz, and my family member didn't like their Paloma - so we swapped and it worked well. The Spritz is an acquired taste. Bavette's isn't really a walk-in kind of place... unless you're lucky. On our wedding anniversary this year, we got very lucky. We showed up expecting our usual. A couple of seats at the bar, since landing a reservation here is not that easy. Five minutes later, we were seated at a high top instead. Small miracle. The food is spectacular. We went with the frites and the filet, and honestly, the sides deserve their own review. Rich, flavorful, the kind of thing you keep picking at even when you're full. Truffle mac and spinach are my usual go-tos, but there's really nothing on the menu that lets you down. And the whole time, it delivers that effortlessly luxe feeling in the room. Somehow snagged the impossible-to-get reservations and you should do the same. The interior gives old jazzy supper club and is so cozy. Our server was incredibly sweet, helpful, and comped a few items to help us celebrate our anniversary! The sourdough and cultured butter we started with was some of the best butter I've literally ever had. They also seamlessly accommodated my request of splitting their 10oz double wagyu burger for an appetizer and we were SO happy we were able to try it. It was perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious (one of the only times I could tell a burger was really wagyu). For dinner we split the bone-in filet mignon and a few sides. If you want a premier, premium dining experience you will get it at Bavette's (assuming you're able to secure a reservation here, which somehow my friend was able to deliver to kudos to them). Overall the dark ambience and the service gives you the fine dining feel without having to shell the money or the effort to be at a fine dining restaurant. The food pricing is on the higher end but in terms of value for money perhaps lives a bit more on the hype and its location over everything else. I think the steak was decent and delicious but wouldn't amaze you enough to feel like you'd have to come here a second time or have this be your go to steakhouse in Chicago. I think the actual star of the show were the mushrooms, that dish was a fan favorite among our table. I also think the bacon they use in their salad was also phenomenal and delicious. The service here was immaculate--easily the highlight of the entire experience. Attentive without being overbearing, the staff truly elevated the night. We ordered a spread: the wagyu burger, short rib stroganoff, truffle mac and cheese, Brussels sprouts, elote-style corn, fries, and the hot fudge sundae royale, paired with Kir Royales. Finally got a one of the most sought after reservations in Chicago. Customer service is phenomenal and the sides are the star of the show (order the mac & cheese and brussel sprouts). The shrimp scampi was an excellent starter and the bread was perfection. The entrees left a bit to be desired. The fried chicken lacked seasoning and the lamb chops had an overwhelming char taste. I enjoyed the carrot cake and birthday dessert too. Overall, I must say this restaurant is a tad overrated. I think of Bavette's ALL the time, ever since I tried it, I feel like I can't find another restaurant like it. Reservations are definitely hard to book, but it is worth the trouble. We went here for my partner's birthday and everything about it was perfect. The steak, the sides, and even the dessert were lovely. The restaurant is beautifully lit with intimate seating. We definitely feel very special for this very special occasion. The server (forgot his name) was so kind, he made sure we understood the menu and gave us his personal recommendations. Scoring a table at Bavette's is no freaking joke but by golly WE DID IT! Well, my husband did for our 5 year anniversary. The hype is well deserved. We had a wonderful evening! The space is soooo beautiful. It was a raining when we came which was perfect for the dark and moody vibes inside. We started out with rose and oysters -- a perfect combo! We also did a half of the wedge salad. The bacon in here? Unreal. I decided to go with the Chicago cut ribeye and got it medium rare. It was actually cooked a little closer to medium but was so, so good. The crust on top was top tier. For sides we got the butter mashed potatoes and asparagus. The mashed potatoes are a MUST, where the asparagus was pretty standard. We also ordered the sourdough with was just spectacular. It was at this moment we realized we ordered way too much food, but we couldn't leave without trying a dessert. $400+ dinner for two, including drinks. Nothing special, like we hoped. Pretty much standard steakhouse fare ... maybe a little less tasty than some of the other top-ranked steakhouses I've been to. I'd put it on par with Smith & Wollensky or Capital Grille, which is to say better than average and overpriced. To start off, the wicked stepsister hosts, who look about 20 years old, at the front seem to take joy in making you wait, even if you have a reservation and laugh in your face when you ask to sit in a certain area. There is nothing cool about dealing with a 20 year old on a power trip when paying almost half a grand for dinner for two. The real hero of this establishment should be their lighting designer ... I would venture to say that the dimly-lit yet perfect feeling vibe of the restaurant is what sets it apart. If not for the design of the restaurant, it would be just another steakhouse. The waiters are as pretentious as the hostesses. You know you you walk into a Restoration Hardware store and someone making minimum wage gives you, 'mansion attitude'? That's everyone we encountered at Bacette's ... insufferable snobs. We started out with cocktails, which were well made. Nowhere were the prices but expect a cocktail to set you back $25. The steaks are around $80 - $120. We both had the bone-in filet mignon, which was $89 at the time of the review. I guess it's supposedly a rare cut of meat ... although when I asked our butcher about it being rare, he chuckled and said, 'whatever sells steaks, I guess'. The filet was good ... again, nothing amazing ... on par with a chain like Capital Grille. I ordered mine medium rare and it came medium and a bit under seasoned. Each steak comes with a side of Bearnaise sauce, which honestly was the best part of the meal. Rarely would I consider ruining a $89 steak by dipping it in sauce ... but it kind of needed the extra kick. We got asparagus and the truffle Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was better than the steak, however, we were expecting the normal overflowing sides, which are usually too much for two people to finish. The Mac and cheese was pretty small and we felt like it was more like a single side ... especially given that the filet (minus the bone) was probably around 8 ounces. Asparagus was just your average asparagus. We had the chocolate pie and ice cream for dessert. The chocolate cake was almost like an entire slice of cake frosting with a scoop of dense whipped cream on top. Way too sweet and we barely ate half amongst the both of us. The ice cream was nothing special. We didn't realize you could not have a reservation and sit at the bar. Honestly, we were placed downstairs at a table ... and felt like we were sitting in a basement. It was not as nice as the upper restaurant and they refused to move us when we asked them if we could sit upstairs in the better part. She gleefully said it would be a two hour wait to change tables. If we knew we could have just snagged an empty bar seat upstairs, we'd have done that because it's better than the basement. Although, we saw some near arguments as people rushed in to get a bar stool in front of people who were waiting a long time. And, it's a little awkward to eat with vultures standing behind you waiting to jump into your seat, I'd imagine. So maybe make sure that you request to be seated upstairs and see if the mean girls hostess will accommodate the request. Overall, Chicago has so many good steakhouses, the fact that this one ranked so highly mystifies me. I've been to several better than this which were not even ranked. Is it possible to give a place 6 stars?? Bavette's is officially in my top five favorite dining experiences ever.... And trust me, I don't say that lightly. Everything was amazing, but the standout dishes for us were the crab cake, creamed spinach (OMG! The blue cheese and onion were insane), thick cut bacon, and the dry-aged bone-in ribeye with roasted garlic. The service was excellent, and they don't rush you out the door. So many places make you feel like you're on a timer, but we were able to relax after our meal with no pressure. I'd highly recommend booking a reservation for the parlor downstairs. Got a reservation for dinner, which apparently is both hard to get at a decent hour and is a requirement. So many people want to go here that you'll have very little luck as a walk-in. Supposedly one of the best steakhouses in Chicago, Bavette's does indeed serve a well crafted menu in a dim but well-appointed interior. The ribeye steak was perfectly cooked as was the thick cut bacon. The fudge sundae to end was also great and came with an assortment of toppings on the bottom dish, a big hit with the kids. But the real standout of Bavette's is the top level service. From the host to the servers and wait staff, all were attentive and never kept you waiting long or needing for anything. Came to have dinner on a rainy Chicago night. I arrive to the restaurant without a reservation and hopes that they would have something due to the weather. After arriving, I was greeted by friendly people at the hostess stand, and they were able to seat me immediately. I was seated at the downstairs bar and quickly acknowledged by the bartender/server then given water. After ordering my drink and food, my drink came very quickly, and it was enjoyable. I ordered the steak frites with fries and Mac and cheese. The food was delicious and filling. The steak was perfectly cooked. No complaints on the restaurant as a whole. I had a wonderful experience here and the service here was top-tier. I do wish the lighting was a little bit better downstairs but I know that's a part of the ambience of the restaurant. Bavette's earned its spot as one of the best steaks in the city for a reason. Every cut on the menu is solid and every bite is savory it lives up to the reputation. Got to celebrate a friend's birthday here and the space delivered on all fronts. If you only have time for one dinner in Chicago, make it this place. The attention to detail here is incredible. For example, my boyfriend had been sipping his martini for about 15 minutes, and without us saying a word, our server noticed the chilled glass had warmed up and replaced it with a fresh chilled glass. I've been to a lot of amazing restaurants, but I've never experienced that level of service before. The food only made the experience even better. I would probably pass on the burger next time because it was a bit greasy, I bet it would be the perfect choice if you were hungover! I still can't stop thinking about the shrimp scampi--it was absolutely incredible. They also knew how to make my favorite cocktail, a Clover Club, which was the perfect finishing touch. As non-meat eaters, we kind of figured Bavette's wasn't worth the hassle of the extremely difficult reservation for us. But, taking a look at the menu, there are just as many options for the pescatarian here as there are at any of the other Hogsalt spots, perhaps even a little more interesting. We got lucky with a post-Valentine's Day opening and decided to treat ourselves. The corn style elotes were very tasty, a nice little kick on the sauce that really does sing when you add the lime. This plus their great sourdough bread, some of the best restaurant bread in the city, is a nice app. We love the crab cake down the street at Trivoli, and this one did not disappoint, maybe even a little fluffier. I love how much actual crab and how little filler they use, so good. For our main, we split the Maine Lobster and the truffle mac and cheese. The lobster was great, a full lobster broken apart for easy sharing with several sauces and butters to really complement the dish. About as good of lobster as we've had. And the truffle mac was as good last night as it was six years ago when I ordered it for take out during the pandemic. You can really taste the truffle, it's just present enough to provide a subtle hint a chocolate that goes we well with the luscious cheese - it's truly unique and has probably ruined mac and cheese everywhere else for me. Finally, the chocolate creme pie is exquisite, so good. I know the sticky date cake is all the rage, I have gone to Armitage just for dessert before, I get it. But, I would put this higher on the top dessert list, it's that good. Our server, Kipp, was quite good as well. We never felt rushed, but we did feel taken care of. He had a few stock waiter lines that provided a few chuckles, and was quite friendly and helpful. Next time, I'd love to sit downstairs - it's a much larger restaurant than I had anticipated. Finally got reservations! The ambience is nice, smooth, old style, low light. There was a group of us, sat a booth. I personally do not like booths, they are cramped and uncomfortable. For appetizers, we ordered the bone marrow, shrimp scampi, and goat cheese. The bone marrow was delicious!!! The shrimp scampi is good, nothing special, the goat cheese with marinara sauce was delicious. Best goat cheese I have had. The breads are huge slices, and toasted perfectly. We ordered the Crab Avocado lettuce, shared it with 5 of us. That was the freshest lettuce leaves I ever had. I loved it. The crab mixture was very good. They could have put more avocado, my opinion. Overall, this was a great fresh salad. I ordered the Ribeye. Although it was kind of fatty, the meat was absolutely decadent! It was ful of flavor, tender, and juicy. Best I ever had. Desert we had the apple pie special. It was a small whole pie with vanilla ice cream and caramel topping you pour over it. It was the best apple pie I ever had. It was so good, good amount of sweetness, it was freshly made. The vanilla ice cream was so creamy and tasty. Nice caramel topping. Very tasty. Perfect combination that made a perfect pie. Bavette's is a classic Hogsalt spot. Dim and moody, but lively and fun. Service start to finish was excellent. Our waiter Erik took great care of us and explained the menu well even though I already had a game plan of what to order as I was waiting for this meal for a month! We got the following: Half order bread (sourdough) - this came with 3 large pieces, definitely good for 2-4 people. Crispy on the outside and so soft on the inside. The butter was amazing. Lyonnaise Salad - this is a great option if you want to try the bacon but don't want the full side order. The salad itself is tasty and dressing was very good. Split the soft boiled egg in the serving plate if you want some runny egg garnish. Definitely a unique salad and I enjoyed it a lot. 10oz double wagyu burger - top tier burger in the city but at an exorbitant price. Our waiter recommended to just order it as is without bacon & egg and he was definitely right. The burger is already incredibly rich & over the top. I think the additions, while delicious, would take away from the pure meat factor. Wagyu blend is delicious and definitely needs to be experienced. With that being said, this is very similar to Au Cheval (sister restaurant) so if you're just wanting a burger I'd just go there and save a few bucks. Bone-In Filet Mignon - I was a bit worried about the filet at first as I had ordered medium rare and those first few bites on the very edge were medium. But as I dug in more I got to those super buttery pieces in the middle and near the bone. Those last few bites at the bone were amazing and melted in my mouth. The béarnaise sauce that it comes with was very good and super rich. Additionally the steak salt was delicious and highly recommend pouring some over to get that extra kick. I will have to revisit to try the filet without the bone to see the difference with that leaner cut. Button Mushrooms - honestly this might have been my favorite dish of the meal. They were exquisite. Tons of umami and savory flavors with added cream and sherry. I would honestly eat these again just by itself. MUST ORDER. My wife doesn't like mushrooms and she said these were very good. Truffle Mac & Cheese - another must order if only for the sake of the immense richness. Very gooey and cheesy with a nice crust on the top. Lemon meringue pie - I'm not a huge fan of lemon but I saw pictures of this pie and it just looked insane. Well I can confirm it tastes insane too. The meringue is basically a huge torched marshmallow. The lemon is dense and tart but sweet. Not acidic. Perfect finisher to a hearty meal. Overall Bavette's was fantastic and truly deserving of the hype they generate. If only it were easier to get a reservation but understanding that difficulty, it is a must visit spot in Chicago Easy 5 stars. read more

This was honestly one of the best meals I've ever had in my life! We ate downstairs in the parlor which was very cool. The place has a speakeasy feel. Everything we ordered was fantastic. We started with the baked goat cheese and the burger (which they cut into quarters for us so everyone could have a taste). Both were as good as they looked. The bone-in ribeye, bone-in filet, and fried chicken were all outstanding. The truffle mac & cheese and creamed spinach were perfect sides. We finished off with chocolate cream pie and carrot cake.
