Big busy place but the service was A+. Enjoyed the baked clams and oysters. NY strip tasty and prepared perfectly. Chicken parm and chicken marsala also delicious. Finished out with the spumoni. Can't wait to go back

We went to Gene & Georgetti for our anniversary and loved all the decorations on the wall and the history in the room. We ordered the lobster cocktail which was very fresh and creamy. The supreme potato was so good and I loved the béarnaise sauce for the filet mignon. My husband ordered his steak Oscar's way and said it was fantastic. The onion rings were well seasoned and they have a delicious ranch to pair with. Service was fast but we did not see our server for a good while when the restaurant started to fill up. Regardless of that, we would recommend!

Oysters Rockefeller

As someone who dines out frequently, I understand that even great restaurants can have an occasional off night. That may have been the case during our first visit to Gene & Georgetti, so The Doctor and I decided to give them another try--and I'm very glad we did. The second visit easily earned that extra star. Fabien, Stephanie, Antonio, and Erica went above and beyond to make our evening truly lovely. We began with an order of Oysters Rockefeller. While the menu didn't specify whether the oysters were East or West Coast, based on their size I would guess East Coast. They were small but absolutely packed with flavor--so much so that we ordered a second round. For dinner, The Doctor chose the Spaghetti all'Aglione (house-made pasta with a simple tomato sauce and roasted garlic), while I ordered the Tordelli Lucchesi (house-made pasta filled with beef, pork, and herbs, finished with a Bolognese sauce). Both dishes were excellent. The Spaghetti all'Aglione was beautifully simple yet very satisfying. Personally, I didn't find the garlic particularly strong--but that worked perfectly for me, since garlic and I have a bit of a complicated relationship (even though I love the flavor). The standout of the evening for me was the Tordelli Lucchesi. I had never seen pasta shaped quite like this--it reminded me somewhat of a pierogi. The pasta itself was dense and filling, and the meat filling had wonderful flavor. The Bolognese sauce brought everything together and finished the dish beautifully. We ended the meal with a slice of carrot cake. I'm not usually a big dessert person--regular readers of my reviews may already know this--but every now and then I indulge. Gene & Georgetti's carrot cake is outstanding. Normally I scrape most of the frosting off cakes, but the frosting here was more like a creamy cream cheese layer and absolutely delicious. The cake itself was moist with a lovely balance of sweetness and spice. The slice was enormous, so The Doctor and I shared it and still had some left to take home. I personally prefer my desserts warmed slightly, and I can confirm that Gene & Georgetti's carrot cake is fantastic when heated--it really brings out the flavors. The cream cheese frosting melted a little, but I certainly didn't mind. It was still absolutely delicious. After this experience, Gene & Georgetti has officially earned a spot in our regular dining rotation. Next time, though, The Doctor and I plan to settle in at the bar. I'll still be ordering the carrot cake--but I'll definitely be taking it home so I can warm it up.

So tonight a private group of 9 of us sat upstairs in the "Poker Room" next to a private bar. This was the most intimate experience one could hope for, with exquisite food and drinks, and attentive service! OUTSTANDING job G&G! Perfect succulent pork chops. Ginormous portions on the Chicken Vesuvius and Brazino dishes. Plentiful sides--ORDER THESE UNIQUE ONION RINGS AND THE FRESH CUT FRENCH FIES!!! (The staples of potatoes, creamed spinach and asparagus are also delicious). The proteins were all perfectly prepared to temperature and properly seasoned. The steak is worth the costs-promise.

This is such a Chicago staple with a true Chicagoan vibe. It has the soul of the city! We stopped in for restaurant week, but have had Gene & Georgetti on our list for a while. It was the perfect setting for a date night, with romantic table setting and an intimate vibe. The service here is top notch. We were able to describe what we liked in a drink to our server and he had perfect suggestions that we both ended up loving. The food was incredible! Such a great portion and excellent quality for the restaurant week price. The steak was cooked perfectly and had an amazing sear on it. My partner also really enjoyed the calamari and couldn't stop raving about it. I cannot get over how much we love the vibe and Chicago-ness of this spot! 85 years in operation for a good reason!

We had a great experience!! The service was impeccable and the ambiance was kind of a speakeasy vibes. We started with the seafood tower, which was pretty well stocked. I def prefer warm seafood so it wasn't my favorite but the seafood was quality. My friends loved it. For meals we got the prime rib, NY strip, truffle pasta, and the filet. I tried everything but the filet and it was all very good. The NY strip was one of the best I've had in the city. Would def come back just for that! For sides we got the asparagus, mushrooms, and spinach. I really liked the asparagus but they were all good. I'd probably try something different next time. Opted out of dessert but did have some great wine too. Overall great experience, definitely an underrated steakhouse in Chicago.

My 5 Takeaways (in under 60 seconds) Location: Great location. Easy to find, with a good amount of nearby street parking available. Vibe: Ten out of ten. If you love that old-school mafia Goodfellas feel, this is the spot for you. The atmosphere is comfortable, small and cozy, but classy and upscale. Service: Excellent customer service from beginning to end. Our waiter was friendly and attentive, checking on us often, keeping our drinks full, and going out of his way to make our visit one to remember. Food: Delicious and mouthwatering. For an appetizer, we ordered the Oysters Rockefeller - an excellent choice! The oysters were fresh and packed with flavor. For my entrée, I ordered the New York strip with a side of mashed potatoes and grilled seasonal vegetables. Everything was cooked to perfection and tasted amazing. Zero complaints. Quick Tip: Reserve the Frank Sinatra booth - it's the best seat in the house!

I have been a long time fan of G&G. I have been going to this restaurant since 1996 I was so pumped about taking my wife for the first time and it was a disappointment. So what was good? The 12oz Filet was cooked perfectly.and they sliced it for us. While it did taste good it got cold and I have had much much better. The supreme potato was the star of the show. Well done and tasted amazing!!! The cranberry martini was awesome along with the espresso martini. The fall mule was just whisky on the rocks and not good So the bad? The salad way too much dressing and over the top blue cheese. The gnocchi. Was soft and perfect but the 4 cheese was too pungent. They need to work on greetings. No one at the entrance had to navigate to find someone and not extremely personable. We had reservations but we got sat by the entrance which is by the bar and where everyone waiting for their tables stands. We and everyone on this four table area had people standing right next to them as they ate. The server was so so not bad but not great. The guy who brought water and cleaned our table was super nice. I wanted this to be as memorable as I remembered, but was sadly disappointed. I know they can do better and hope they do, but with so many other options for steak I would probably think twice before coming back.

House made ravioli with bolognese sauce

Historic old mafia steakhouse. A lot bigger than appears from outside. Great ambience, family friendly but also romantic upscale steakhouse. Great service from our waiter Tony, decent bread, amazing Caesar salad freshly made with anchovies, delicious house made ravioli with ragù sauce, and the perfectly rare cook NY Strip all accompanied by one of best bottles of wine that we were allowed to sample between two choices. Picked the winner. Ended the meal with affogato and complimentary limoncello. Great experience and date night in Chicago for wife and I.

Caesar salad
Anabel A.

Claude suggested this Chicago steakhouse due to its historic significance. Outside doesn't look like much but the inside is cozy and of the old world. Staff was attentive. The food was average. Tiramisu tasted like soap. Brussel sprouts were fine. The thick cut bacon was too salty for my liking. Prime rib was fine--the sauce that it was in tasted like a burgundy glaze--that was good. Their side dish of bolognese was fine. Not sure what the seasoning was but it was strong. Cumin? The pasta was also overcooked. Caesar salad was fine. Very creamy. Not top end. I rank this as an average establishment for food.

Moscow Mule
Sierra C.

A classic staple, Gene & Georgetti is about what you'd expect from an old school Chicago steakhouse. While on the smaller side, it doesn't get too loud or busy, making it a nice place to go for an easy dinner. If you try only one thing, I recommend the flourless chocolate lava cake. It's the perfect amount of chocolate without being overwhelmed. It's a bit of a wait as they make it fresh, but it's worth it.

My steak

Had been on my list for years. Came in with my girlfriend the day before Valentine's day. I like the wood decor and classic layout of the restaurant. Ordered a Vesper Martini, Caesar salad, 14 oz NY strip with side of mashed potatoes. Shared some onion rings with my girlfriend. We reflected how the onion rings taste differently than the ones we get from neighborhood burger place. I remarked on how there are different varieties of onions and they probably use different onions for frying. The steak was nice and rare how I like it. I loved how the Caesar salad not only uses anchovies but you see the anchovies and they give little savory+ salty taste. For dessert went with turtle cheesecake to end the meal. It was superb.

La Bistecca Fiorentina
Geoffrey P.

This may be the oldest steakhouse in Chicago, but it's probably also one of the worst. Their premier bone in ribeye is dry, tough, and not worth $170. The potatoes are undercooked as are the Brussel sprouts. I can think of no reason to dine here in a city of great steakhouses. Go up the street to Bavette's and if you can't get a table go to Joe's. Sad that it is so bad. I take no pleasure from this review, but you'd be better off at Outback.

Love me some sushi, so I was excited to try the California roll, although it was hard to justify it being $18!!! The crab was very minimal, as you can tell by the pictures... it was missing the classic California roll taste given barely any meat. The Mac and cheese side was good. Nothing too special. plus. But standard is the best word I can think of. Shareable portion, which is a plus. Service was excellent. The server was friendly and personable. Wow! The first time…read morewe came to the Chicago location of Hugo's Frog Bar, we had the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake and it was amazing - best I'd ever had. That was 12 years ago. Since then, I've had crab cakes all over the U.S. and Hugo's remained my gold standard. Tonight, 12 years later, we returned to Hugo's on Rush Street downtown Chicago. We had a 6 pm reservation on a Monday night. We were given the option to eat in the special Elevator Car, so we chose it. It was a bit tight getting into the bench seating but once in, we were quite comfortable and it was really quaint. I'm glad we chose it. Our server tonight was Stephanie O and she was amazing. So knowledgeable, so pleasant and very accommodating. We told Stephanie we planned to take it a bit slow, starting with cocktails. She took our cocktail orders and we took our time enjoying them, admiring our special Elevator Car and pondering dinner options. Of course, a Crab Cake was definitely happening! Stephanie checked in with us from time to time and when we were ready, we asked her to drop a Crab Cake order. Oh my - it was amazing, just like the last time! Just enough breadcrumbs in it to hold it together. Baked, then seared on both sides on the flat top and served with their house made remoulade. For us, this menu item and a service as great as it was from Stephanie and the rest of the team was enough of a reason to come to Hugo's. After we'd finished sharing the Crab Cake, Stephanie stopped by with the fresh fish options platter to explain each one to us, how it would be prepared and what it would be like. We nearly went for the Snapper but dropped back to our original thought of trying their Shrimp De Jonghe along with a dinner salad. So glad we did as the Shrimp De Jonghe was really tasty and just enough food. The salad and shrimp meal were both kitchen-split for us. Nice touch - thanks team! I have to add that we've had Shrimp De Jonghe somewhere else and we recall it as not being as good as Hugo's. I like how their breadcrumb on the shrimp here was less a breading and more of a dusting. I'd like to mention the rest of the staff we saw in action. The hostesses were quite pleasant, found our reservation and seated us with pleasure. The table team from the water guy, to him and others clearing completed items was excellent. The chef or one of the cooks brought out our split Shrimp De Jonghe. That was a nice touch.
