Saturday night dinner reservation here. One of the trendy restaurants that specialized in steak and American style fare. Made a reservation for 9:30 and got here right at that time. Upon checkin to the hostess stand inside the door - you're sent thru the bar area to an elevator and up to the 3rd floor, where you enter the restaurant. We checked in there and were told the table was being prepared. The issue here is the hostesses are told to tell people to hang out at the bar and they'll come and get you when your table is ready. Issue with this is: you can't hear yourself think and there was an insane log jam there. So we retreated and sat out at the foyer. We were taken to our table in about 15min. Still very loud - and I'm not sensitive to loud ambience but it was heavy. Darkly lit place with no ceiling lights just candelabras on the tables. Kind of cool - very loud. We started with the Caesar salad which was partly charred and served with a soft boiled egg. It was good enough but the charring was a little over the top. For an entree I ordered the special Japanese's wagyu 6oz. I also added the brussel sprouts and we shared the au gratin potatoes. The steak was perfect really - tender, evaporated upon taste, and executed perfectly. The sides were ok - potatoes were the better of the two we got - as the brussel sprouts were just brussel sprout leaves no sprout themselves. Very hard to eat this way. For dessert I ordered the coconut cream pie which was a massive wedge. Tasted very good and I polished it. Our waitress - English? Took care of us, but was handling other tables as well so other staff also stepped in to fill drinks and make sure our experience continued at a timely rate. Maple & Ash has been one of my go-to restaurants since they first opened. While certain things never disappoint, some aspects simply are not as good as they used to be. The service and ambiance remain top tier. The staff is attentive, polished, and consistently helpful. While I appreciate the restaurant's attire policy, it does seem selectively enforced, considering the number of guests wearing sneakers and t-shirts. It gives the impression that enforcement is somewhat at-will. The welcome treats at the start of the meal are always a nice touch. Our server, Brad, was excellent...attentive, knowledgeable, and thorough in explaining the current offerings. And those meatballs...still incredible. Absolutely one of the standout items on the menu. Shrimp Scampi...yes and yes! The mushrooms were fine, but nothing particularly memorable. The sautéed greens were refreshing and something I would gladly order again. One surprise of the evening was the Steak Frites. Even though I did not order it myself, it was honestly the best steak entree at the table. Unfortunately, my Steak au Poivre (ribeye medallion) was the biggest disappointment of the night. The Steak au Poivre, served with peppercorn seasoning and a green peppercorn sauce, arrived split down the middle and lacked flavor almost entirely. To its credit, it was cooked perfectly. But for the price point, flavor matters most, and this dish simply did not deliver. As someone who loves a good ribeye, I would not order this entree again. The beverages were enjoyed by everyone at the table, and after a long week, that macchiato definitely hit the spot. If you love espresso, this is an excellent choice. And last, the chocolate is a nice treat share. Everyone can enjoy a taste, if you love chocolate. Overall, Maple & Ash still delivered a great birthday dinner experience. What an amazing experience. This is the epitome of what a Chicago steakhouse should be. I will compare all future experiences and restaurants to this one. Amazing service, great pacing for the food, and delicious entrees. My husband and I came here to celebrate his birthday, and Sarah took great care of us. We loved the personal touch with the printed menu. We decided to go all out and do the tasting menu, and we were so glad we did. They said they'd take care of us and they didn't disappoint. Standouts were the halibut, the seafood tower, the New York strip with bone marrow, the ice cream sundae, the coconut pie, and the wedge salad. I love that the menu was seasonal as well, the hamachi sashimi came with strawberries in a strawberry chili sauce that was tangy and flavorful. Every course left an impression on us. We thought the Brussel sprouts were a little bitter, and Sarah immediately asked if we'd like a substitute with asparagus or dessert. We chose the dessert and were surprised at the level of care from the staff here. Highly recommend coming here for a special occasion. They'll make you feel so welcome and taken care of. The food is definitely on the pricier end but it's totally worth every dollar. Two people doing the tasting menu with 1 cocktail cost around $550 pre tip. Employee benefits and tax are included as added costs to the bill. All the employees act as a well oiled machine, working in-sync to set clean utensils, clear the table, and set up the next entree. Bathrooms were upstairs and were spacious and clean. The restaurant itself has a dark ambience lit just by candles at the table. The music in the background is a little loud and distracting. The building is 4 stories high. The first floor was the Eight Bar area. You walk all the way to the back to get on an elevator to the third floor where the main restaurant is. There's a coat check next to the elevator too. Not sure what is on the second floor. On the fourth floor are the restrooms which you walk up the stairs from the third floor. Unfortunately, that wasn't what we experienced. We brought a group of 8 to celebrate a coworker's birthday and were prepared to spend accordingly. The food was good and the service itself was professional, although I'd put the overall culinary experience on par with several other top Chicago steakhouses. What surprised me was the inconsistency between the brand and the actual experience. Some members of our group were dressed more casually, and the birthday guest himself was initially not allowed upstairs to join the rest of us on the third floor. For a restaurant that leans heavily into an edgy, carefree identity, the vibe felt unexpectedly rigid and performative. Then, after about three hours, we were asked to leave shortly after closing out the bill -- despite no clear mention of a hard reservation time limit when booking. Again, totally fair if that's policy, but it didn't align with the tone the restaurant projects. Overall: good food, solid service, but the experience felt more "carefully curated exclusivity" than "we don't give a f***." There are other Chicago steakhouses where the hospitality feels more authentic and the atmosphere more genuinely welcoming. I'm a lover of the Chicago restaurant scene; love great food, enjoy Michelin star restaurants from time to time, and generally appreciate of the great experiences offer in the Chicago area. This is one I won't have to do again, and would recommend alternatives. read more

Stopped by Maple & Ash on one of my last trips to Chicago and wow it was excellent. When you arrive parking can be difficult and you'll likely have to park in a lot or park at a meter on the street. I had my luggage with me and it was no issue as the restaurant has a coat check located on the first floor past the bar. I dropped off my luggage with the coat check and proceeded up the elevator to the third floor (btw the restrooms are on the 4th floor if you need to use them before sitting down). When I arrived at the third floor I checked in with the host and was seated. The restaurant is beautiful, has dark painted walls and real candles on the tables. After I was seated we were brought a welcome cocktail and a caviar dip (which contained 1 oz. warm blinis, potato chips, chives, egg & crème fraiche. The welcome cocktail and caviar dip were excellent. Next I ordered an espresso martini (which contained espresso washed grey goose altius, hazelnut, cacao, saline & foam) which was excellent and a perfect pick me up after a long flight. To start dinner we ordered the ricotta agnolotti (pillows of love w/ winter truffle) which were definitely the best dish of the evening and you have to try this dish. The truffle, ricotta and pasta balance this dish perfectly. Next, our server brought some fresh bread to the table which I couldn't stop eating. For my main course I ordered the 28 day dry-aged bone-in ribeye which was excellent. The steak was cooked perfectly and definitely would order this again. We also ordered the Lobster Mac & Cheese, the Brussel Sprouts, and whipped & buttered potatoes. All of the sides were excellent but my favorite was the whipped and buttered potatoes as it complemented the steak nicely. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant and this may be the best steakhouse in Chicago. Next time I'll need to try the fire roasted seafood tower. If you are in the Gold Coast neighborhood or in Chicago this is a must try. Also, make sure to grab a reservation as this restaurant can get busy. read more

But it is also very expensive for a steak house - as a couple we typically spend $500 here and it can go higher if you order aggressively. It's hard to put it into words but everything was phenomenal, they start with the welcome drink and appetizer which was a wonderful surprise. Their reservation system could use some tweaking as my sister kept receiving various reservation confirmation times. When we got there, I was appreciative that they were able to accommodate the additional two people without having to wait. The staff and presentation of the dishes were very nice. Maple + Ash is one of those restaurants that I feel like we've all seen time and time again, especially with their personalized Happy Birthday menus. I was excited to finally check them out to celebrate one of my friend's birthdays. The environment is definitely vibes. I loved all of the Christmas lights and decorations they had, and it's super dark and moody inside, and it just feels really upscale. My friend and I split a Ribeye, accompanied by the Béarnaise Sauce. We also got the Brussels Sprouts, Whipped Potatoes, and Roasted Mushrooms for sides, as well the Chocolate Cake for dessert. The food was all really good. The ribeye was cooked perfectly, and the sauce complemented it really well. The brussels sprouts and chocolate cake were a little underwhelming, but the mashed potatoes and mushrooms were delicious. I especially loved the mushrooms; they were so umami and unique in their taste. Honestly, the best part of our meal was the service. Our server was AMAZING. I wish I got his name since he did such a great job at making sure we were well taken care of. He checked in on us throughout the meal, was very sweet in making sure my friend had a good birthday, and seemed to just genuinely care.
