Mac and Cheese and the Potatoes

Intimate and lively with a laid back but with luxury vibe. The restaurant has this classic historical decor but with modern touches for the design. Everything we order from the drinks to the foods was exceptional. I started with a salt and pepper vesper martini which was strong. It reminded me of a Bloody Mary with the flavors. I also had one of the Duke martini, definitely a classic. We started with the Vietnamese oysters, pork belly and scallops. The oysters had these fried shallots on top and a lemon/lime flavor. The flavors marinated so well together with the saltiness of the oysters. Pork belly was so tender and juicy. The glaze was a great balance of sweet and salty. The scallops breading was amazing. So flavorful and crispy. My husband and I ordered the Akaushi Wagyu, cooked perfectly medium rare. The tenderness of the steak was like butter. The bone marrow that accompany the steak was rich and fatty but full or wonderful flavor. We also go the crispy potatoes and mac and cheese for the sides. The potatoes are the ultimate classic hash brown flavor. Fried crispy and not oily which makes it such a great side dish. The Mac and cheese was definitely cheesy especially since it has 4 different type of cheeses. Since it was our anniversary, our server gave us a complementary sticky toffee pudding which I never had before but it's was amazing. It was salty and sweet and the ice cream balance out the richness of the toffee sauce. Our server was wonderful. Very informative polite and attentive. Gave us great recommendations for our dinner and portion size regarding oz per person for the steak.

Did anyone say happy hour on the weekend? No? Well, you're not saying it right because Hawksmoor is a wonderful place to be for happy hour, weekday or weekend. And let's start with the food because this place is top tier. I had the steak frites, and when I say melt-in-your-mouth good, I mean the kind of steak where you take that first bite and immediately slow down because you need a second to appreciate what just happened. Tender, rich, and cooked beautifully, it practically disappeared with every bite. Then you have the fries alongside it, giving you that crispy bite you need before going right back in for another piece of steak. There, I said it. It was GOOD. The drinks? Phenomenal! Then there's the vibe. Hawksmoor is upscale without feeling like it's trying too hard, and somehow it still feels 100% Chicago. The dark woods, the atmosphere, and the wonderful wait staff give it that classic steakhouse feeling while still being comfortable enough to settle in for happy hour and stay awhile. I really can't say enough about this place, but apparently, I'm going to have to try because I plan on going back again and again. If you're looking for a happy hour where the food isn't an afterthought, the drinks deliver, and the atmosphere makes you want to order just one more round, Hawksmoor needs to be on your list. Weekend happy hour? Yes. I'm saying it right now.

1st time dining at this fabulous place. We were greeted by smiling faces as we walked in, and then another smiling face - Alena - our server. She was kind and knowledgeable and concise. Wonderful staff brought drinks, napkins and a smile. So, there we go - 5 stars We loved the ambiance, the decor & the lighting. Dark wood, cool booths and enough lighting to feel cozy. Michael recommended a nice wine for the birthday girl and I had a perfect (happy hour) martini. (One lil disappointment-a fancy restaurant like Hawksmoor-please stuff your own blue cheese olives!) We had a tasty and perfectly cooked filet. Temperature and flavor were exquisite. Sautéed spinach and mashed potatoes We choose steakhouses when we want a special evening...Hawksmoor has vaulted to the top of the list in Chicago!! (Also, try the dumplings as a plate to share, delectable) And Pedro, Thank You for saying Hi. We will absolutely see you soon!!

Had a business dinner hosted here in a private dinning space downstairs from the main restaurant and they put together a 4-course tasting menu. It was an impressive amount of food and everything I ate was outstanding! My favorite was the puff meat appetizers and of course the steaks cooked to perfection. Only downside is there were a few things served that I could not try due to allergies and they didn't ask beforehand so not sure if that was a miss or not from a service perspective. Drinks stayed filled, they changed out silverware with each course and overall a very nice upscale steak house. I'd like to go back to order from the main menu.

Came by specifically for the happy hour! Runs 5-6 daily! Came on a Friday evening. Two of us ordered: pazo HH $12 argiano HH $12 HH natural oysters $2 ea, ordered 3 dozen steak frites $25 pieropan HH $12 Julian was friendly taking care of us. Relatively empty in the bar area. Wine was good. Oysters were fresh (though small). Steak was cooked well too! Also Hawksmoor is a part of the Open Table Chase Sapphire Reserve, so definitely can be used for the $150 credit!

Really enjoyed our dinner at Hawksmoor! We started with the $2 happy hour oysters, which were super fresh. The charcoal-roasted scallops from the regular dinner menu were probably our favorite dish of the night--so flavorful and perfectly cooked. The Notorious B.E.E.F. burger was definitely indulgent, but not overwhelmingly so (and it's nowhere near as huge as it looks in the photos--good photography, haha!). The happy hour steak frites was also delicious and a great value at $28. Our server, Alex, was attentive, friendly, and made the whole experience even better. We were celebrating my husband's birthday, and they surprised us with a complimentary peanut cake and salted caramel ice cream, which was such a sweet touch. Great food, great service, and especially good value during happy hour. We'd definitely come back!

    Ultimate sharing roast

Visited London a few years ago and was unable to try the Sunday roast (it books out quick!) so was happy when a Hawksmoor opened in Chicago! Went here with a buddy and tried the Ultimate Sharing Roast for two, which is a spruced up version of their normal beef rump Sunday roast; it comes with slices of juicy rib roast, roast potatoes + cabbage + parsnips, bone marrow stuffing, a Yorkshire pudding, a cup of gravy for each person, a roasted garlic head, and when we went it also included a side of their baked cauliflower cheese, although I think now the whole set is a bit cheaper and doesn't include that any more. The beef slices were nicely rare in the middle and juicy, complemented by the super savory velvety bone marrow gravy. The Yorkshire pudding was airy and light, and while the veggies and some of the sides lacked a bit of salt, they were all roasted and prepared so well. The roasted garlic was perfectly spreadable and took all the meat and veggies up a notch. To top it all off, they brought us some warm, gooey chocolate chip cookies as a complimentary little dessert! While it's not an every week type of thing for me, the Sunday roast definitely lived up to the hype!

We were visiting Chicago for a birthday weekend and chose this restaurant for a birthday dinner. I love the atmosphere of this building, kinda reminds me of a speakeasy. The service was top notch. We got the cast iron filet for the table it was plenty to share for four of us. The cocktails were really good as well. This is a little pricey but a great place to go to celebrate a special occasion.

Had an early Father's Day celebration here with my family! Came on a Sunday to try their Sunday roast British tradition. Scallops: Get these!!! So buttery and delicious. I could've easily eaten 20 of these. Hawksmoor iced tea: Skip this. Little to no sweetness. Very watered down. Pineapple soda: Was also watered down Sunday roast: Great to experience with a group! We got 1 ultimate roast and 2 regular roasts cause they were short on the ultimate portion. The meat needed more salt but other than that it was good. The gravy is delish! Comes with stuffing and cheesy cauliflower as the sides. Sticky toffee pudding: Get! Cake is very moist and the syrup at the bottom is so good. I love toffee pudding in general! We also got the sundae form and it was equally as good!

Decided to partake in the Sunday Roast tradition at Hawksmoor Chicago after being heavily target-marketed on Instagram with lascivious reels of the bone marrow gravy being poured slow-mo over glistening beef. Needless to say, their marketing team deserves a raise. Good location in River North in an old cable car powerhouse, with a moody yet upscale aesthetic. Didn't love being sat for our Sunday brunch in the far corner next to the waitstaff service station, but the upholstered bench seating was comfortable. The Sunday Roast is the star of the show, but there are options that you can select to enhance your experience. We selected the Ultimate Sharing Roast, which comes with all the items in the per-person portion plus the Cauliflower Gratin and the Bone Marrow Stuffing, baked in-bone. The presentation is wonderful and the real highlights were the rib of beef with bone marrow gravy, the perfectly crisp roasted potatoes, the parsnips, the gratin, and the Yorkshire pudding. The cabbage could have used a little more fat and seasoning for its roasting, the bone marrow stuffing was dry and required the addition of the gravy to be even partially enjoyable, and the additional bone marrow bone, which I found to be overkill. I adored the spicy and bracing Shaky Pete's Ginger Brew during the meal, which was a perfect foil to the rather heavy, savory foodstuffs. It was a beautiful 70°+ day in Chicago and frankly, this is a colder weather kind of brunch. Save it for a rainy day! Literally! Our service was excellent throughout the meal, and we felt very well taken care of. We ended with the Sticky Toffee Sunday, an absolutely decadent treat but in a manageable portion and proportion with the ice cream. We were then treated to a little extra, a duo or chocolate oatmeal cookies that, for me at the end of this extremely filling and indulgent meal, were one toke over the line. I did enjoy the courtesy bite I took. It's a spendy way to start your Sunday, but very enjoyable. It could easily feed three (or four with modest appetites.) I do want to return to sample the other desserts and have another of those cocktails!

    Raw Oysters

It was a difficult day at work, and I was craving a steak! I set out searching for a place to get some, and my eyes found themselves gravitating toward Hawksmoor, especially their happy hour menu. I went in and discovered that while the restaurant is fine dining, they do have an area upstairs which has more of a pub vibe, but with the same menu. From their happy hour menu, I ordered an Old Fashioned, a Margarita, oysters (six raw, three fried), and the steak and fries. Outside of the happy hour menu, I ordered the Steelhead Tartare and a Peanut Butter Louis for dessert. The raw oysters were fine. They were of small-to-medium size, and one or two of them had a little bit of shell. No complaints about the fried oysters. They were fried to crisp perfection, and while they didn't taste fishy, they weren't exploding with flavor, either. At $2 apiece for both, I'm going to choose to be forgiving. Where it comes to the Steelhead Tartare, this was one of the stars of the night. The fish was of absolutely stupendous quality and allowed to shine, rather than being overpowered by everything else. It was accented just the right amount by a little bit of greens, a lightly citrusy and sesame-based sauce, and teeny-tiny rings of chili. These added a very subtle heat that made me wish my taste buds weren't already seared off. The tartare was served with some well-toasted, properly thin quality bread. In terms of the main event, the steak frites were alright. The fries were underwhelming. They had a good level of salt, but otherwise seemed like they were either not made with care, or had spent some quality time under a lamp. In terms of the steak, maybe this is me being an uncultured swine, but I felt it wasn't show-stopping. It had a little bit of seasoning (salt), wasn't at all chewy, and had some good, subtle meat flavors. However, I've also had absolutely amazing melt-in-your-mouth steaks, and this wasn't it. Now, I appreciate that rump roast tends to be on the leaner side, but so does Filet Mignon, and I've had great ones that *do* melt in your mouth. For dessert, I ordered a Peanut Butter Louis, and this was the other star of the night. I can see why this is a variant of something served at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Some of the inside of the cake was crisp, while the rest was soft and decadent. This is especially helped by the peanut butter. Everything comes together in delicious harmony. It gets me nostalgic for when Reese's Cups were actually great before they went cheapo on the ingredients, but I digress. When it comes to the drinks, the Old Fashioned and the Margarita were standard. They were well-executed, but beyond that, completely unremarkable. If you *do* seek something more amazing, they have them on the regular menu, but these cost eight dollars more. It's happy hour, beggars can't be choosers. I do appreciate that these two drinks were strong, and getting out of my seat after the meal, I could definitely feel them. In terms of value, getting a solid piece of meat, $2 oysters, and strong drinks is a great deal. However, as it is with me, I start getting some accoutrements, and the price goes up pretty steeply. Set your expectations wisely. If you're seeking to get some good food in your belly at reasonable prices, Hawksmoor's happy hour is the place for you. But, if you want an elevated cocktail or elevated steak, maybe look beyond the HH. When it comes to service, I want to award all the credit. Items came out fast, and the service was kind, attentive, friendly, and the servers worked together as a team. One final note. I am not someone who cares *that* much. However, I notice, and I share. For a place that calls itself fine dining, the silverware had aggressive spotting. I realize it isn't dirt and just water spots. Nonetheless, one would hope a place that touts itself as fine dining would have their stuff together in terms of polishing. Final verdict. While there were some winners of the night, the main event left me underwhelmed. Perhaps that's by design, but given the fries, I can't be so sure. I do know that I left having paid a pretty penny with only moderate satisfaction. Thus, I don't have a feeling of dying to return, be it the HH menu or otherwise.

It was barely cheesy and was like a alfredo sauce more than cheesy, and the crust on top was lukewarm and stagnant like it had been sitting there. From, the service, to the food, to the ambiance, everything was near perfect. Our reservation was at 6pm but we arrived about 10 minutes early. We were greeted and seated immediately. We were seated in one of their semi-private tables surrounded by sheer curtains. Alex was our server, he greeted us right away, and started us with waters. Alex gave us time to look over the menu before taking our drink orders. We did let him know it was our first time dining at Penumbra and would like anything recommendations he had to offer. He provided his recommendations, which were the jalapeño shrimp, the ribeye, and the salmon. My husband went with the surf and turf (ribeye and lobster), and I went with the salmon. Before our meal they serve you a complimentary sipping soup (potato rosemary bisque). We also ordered drinks. He had a mojito and I had a caipirinha. It took a little time for our meal but not more than 10-15 minutes. Everything was prepared as we ordered it, hot, and delicious. If you're in Chicago and looking for a good meal, nice romantic ambiance, and good food, you will not be disappointed with Penumbra.

Perilla Korean Steakhouse -- Chicago…read more We had a very successful brunch at Perilla. The Kimchi Bloody Mary was definitely one of the highlights. Being from New Orleans, I personally like my Bloody Mary a little spicier and with a little more of that NOLA kick, but this was still a really good option and a fun Korean twist on a classic brunch drink. The food was excellent and gave us plenty of variety. The Korean tray was a great choice, along with the bibimbap and avocado toast. Everything came together really well, and there was enough variety that everyone could find something they enjoyed. Overall, it was a great brunch experience with good food, interesting drinks, and a nice atmosphere. Definitely worth checking out if you're looking for something a little different from the typical Chicago brunch. We were looking forward to the Korean donuts unfortunately they sell out early sometimes so if that's something you're getting for For, you might want to get there earlier in the day. We had reservations at 12:30 pm and they were sold out. The service was good.

It would have been nice to sit by the bar as the inside of the restaurant was beautifully decorated but there was no space inside. The server was very friendly and helped me make the decision on what to order. She recommended the double smash burger with the sauce on the side and I got a Mai Thai (not pictured). The food was tasty. The drink was just okay. Overall, enjoyed the restaurant.

After receiving the wrong order and waiting an excessive amount of time for our food, we ordered the seafood baller which we were told would accommodate six people. That was absolutely not true. The platter came with maybe three shrimp, barely any scallops, and mussels that were mostly empty shells with no meat inside. It was essentially a large platter of shells and nowhere near enough food for six people. When we asked to speak with the manager, he came to the table while I was in the restroom. Although six other people were sitting there and available to explain the problem, he chose to leave and never returned. Without speaking to us or offering to replace the meal, he took it upon himself to remove the seafood baller from our bill. We weren't looking for free food we wanted the meal we had ordered so we could eat. After sitting there for hours, we still left hungry and somehow had a nearly $700 bill for a couple of sides, two steaks, and drinks. Our server was amazing and did the best he could, but the management and overall level of professionalism were unacceptable. When a guest's order is wrong, management should communicate with the table and make an effort to resolve the problem not simply remove the food without discussing it. We absolutely will not be returning. The experience was nowhere near worth the money.

Our server, Jacob, was helpful and his recommendation of the Lyonnaise Potatoes did not disappoint. We had the small whale, an aged ribeye sandwich, and I got the filet mignon with bone marrow butter. The chilled seafood was delicious, especially with the house mustard sauce. My partner said the steak sandwich was the best they ever had. The filet was easily the best steak I've ever had though the dry-aged ribeye at Abrasado in Mendoza, Argentina is a close second. The grand martini was a perfect pairing for the chilled seafood. They threw in a complimentary brownie with ice cream for a bday dessert which was appreciated on multiple levels. We're not affluent and a meal like this was definitely a splurge but I have zero complaints and would 100% come back for a comparable special occasion. Everything was perfect and I'll remember this meal forever. Thanks, Joe's!
