Filet served with bone marrow

Hawksmoor delivered just the experience we were looking for: fancy steakhouse that had its own personal flourish. Highlights: steak, martinis, and service. FOOD: we had the filet, sauteed spinach, potatoes (though I cannot recall the variety but they were fried and almost tater tot like but also totally different -- haha), caesar salad, martinis, and a pudding for dessert. Absolute highlight (and rightly so) was the steak-- not only just an incredible flavor (and cooked a perfect medium rare) but the salt on the crust added a perfect contrast to the flavor of the meat itself. I most liked that it was both enjoyable and flavor focused. The potatoes, bread, spinach, and pudding were all great too, but the steak was the reason for the visit and delivered! SERVICE: friendly and professional-- no complaints! DRINKS: upscale and great. As advertised-- the martinis were ice cold as they use the method of chilling the liquor (though that's not the standard shaken martini style). AMBIANCE: very nice and perfect for a fancy and upscale meal! I especially liked learning about the different cooking style of the steak (British cooking method) which seems lighter but delivered such a perfectly cooked steak that I will definitely try when cooking at home!

Mac and Cheese and the Potatoes

Intimate and lively with a laid back but with luxury vibe. The restaurant has this classic historical decor but with modern touches for the design. Everything we order from the drinks to the foods was exceptional. I started with a salt and pepper vesper martini which was strong. It reminded me of a Bloody Mary with the flavors. I also had one of the Duke martini, definitely a classic. We started with the Vietnamese oysters, pork belly and scallops. The oysters had these fried shallots on top and a lemon/lime flavor. The flavors marinated so well together with the saltiness of the oysters. Pork belly was so tender and juicy. The glaze was a great balance of sweet and salty. The scallops breading was amazing. So flavorful and crispy. My husband and I ordered the Akaushi Wagyu, cooked perfectly medium rare. The tenderness of the steak was like butter. The bone marrow that accompany the steak was rich and fatty but full or wonderful flavor. We also go the crispy potatoes and mac and cheese for the sides. The potatoes are the ultimate classic hash brown flavor. Fried crispy and not oily which makes it such a great side dish. The Mac and cheese was definitely cheesy especially since it has 4 different type of cheeses. Since it was our anniversary, our server gave us a complementary sticky toffee pudding which I never had before but it's was amazing. It was salty and sweet and the ice cream balance out the richness of the toffee sauce. Our server was wonderful. Very informative polite and attentive. Gave us great recommendations for our dinner and portion size regarding oz per person for the steak.

Did anyone say happy hour on the weekend? No? Well, you're not saying it right because Hawksmoor is a wonderful place to be for happy hour, weekday or weekend. And let's start with the food because this place is top tier. I had the steak frites, and when I say melt-in-your-mouth good, I mean the kind of steak where you take that first bite and immediately slow down because you need a second to appreciate what just happened. Tender, rich, and cooked beautifully, it practically disappeared with every bite. Then you have the fries alongside it, giving you that crispy bite you need before going right back in for another piece of steak. There, I said it. It was GOOD. The drinks? Phenomenal! Then there's the vibe. Hawksmoor is upscale without feeling like it's trying too hard, and somehow it still feels 100% Chicago. The dark woods, the atmosphere, and the wonderful wait staff give it that classic steakhouse feeling while still being comfortable enough to settle in for happy hour and stay awhile. I really can't say enough about this place, but apparently, I'm going to have to try because I plan on going back again and again. If you're looking for a happy hour where the food isn't an afterthought, the drinks deliver, and the atmosphere makes you want to order just one more round, Hawksmoor needs to be on your list. Weekend happy hour? Yes. I'm saying it right now.

Had a business dinner hosted here in a private dinning space downstairs from the main restaurant and they put together a 4-course tasting menu. It was an impressive amount of food and everything I ate was outstanding! My favorite was the puff meat appetizers and of course the steaks cooked to perfection. Only downside is there were a few things served that I could not try due to allergies and they didn't ask beforehand so not sure if that was a miss or not from a service perspective. Drinks stayed filled, they changed out silverware with each course and overall a very nice upscale steak house. I'd like to go back to order from the main menu.

Came by specifically for the happy hour! Runs 5-6 daily! Came on a Friday evening. Two of us ordered: pazo HH $12 argiano HH $12 HH natural oysters $2 ea, ordered 3 dozen steak frites $25 pieropan HH $12 Julian was friendly taking care of us. Relatively empty in the bar area. Wine was good. Oysters were fresh (though small). Steak was cooked well too! Also Hawksmoor is a part of the Open Table Chase Sapphire Reserve, so definitely can be used for the $150 credit!

Really enjoyed our dinner at Hawksmoor! We started with the $2 happy hour oysters, which were super fresh. The charcoal-roasted scallops from the regular dinner menu were probably our favorite dish of the night--so flavorful and perfectly cooked. The Notorious B.E.E.F. burger was definitely indulgent, but not overwhelmingly so (and it's nowhere near as huge as it looks in the photos--good photography, haha!). The happy hour steak frites was also delicious and a great value at $28. Our server, Alex, was attentive, friendly, and made the whole experience even better. We were celebrating my husband's birthday, and they surprised us with a complimentary peanut cake and salted caramel ice cream, which was such a sweet touch. Great food, great service, and especially good value during happy hour. We'd definitely come back!

Ultimate sharing roast

Visited London a few years ago and was unable to try the Sunday roast (it books out quick!) so was happy when a Hawksmoor opened in Chicago! Went here with a buddy and tried the Ultimate Sharing Roast for two, which is a spruced up version of their normal beef rump Sunday roast; it comes with slices of juicy rib roast, roast potatoes + cabbage + parsnips, bone marrow stuffing, a Yorkshire pudding, a cup of gravy for each person, a roasted garlic head, and when we went it also included a side of their baked cauliflower cheese, although I think now the whole set is a bit cheaper and doesn't include that any more. The beef slices were nicely rare in the middle and juicy, complemented by the super savory velvety bone marrow gravy. The Yorkshire pudding was airy and light, and while the veggies and some of the sides lacked a bit of salt, they were all roasted and prepared so well. The roasted garlic was perfectly spreadable and took all the meat and veggies up a notch. To top it all off, they brought us some warm, gooey chocolate chip cookies as a complimentary little dessert! While it's not an every week type of thing for me, the Sunday roast definitely lived up to the hype!

Stopped by for happy hour and can't wait to return. The vibe speaks for itself when you initially sit down in front of the beautiful bar. Add one of the best old fashioned cocktails at a fabulous price and you can't beat this place. Server was super friendly as well. No food this time but it looked outstanding.

Had an early Father's Day celebration here with my family! Came on a Sunday to try their Sunday roast British tradition. Scallops: Get these!!! So buttery and delicious. I could've easily eaten 20 of these. Hawksmoor iced tea: Skip this. Little to no sweetness. Very watered down. Pineapple soda: Was also watered down Sunday roast: Great to experience with a group! We got 1 ultimate roast and 2 regular roasts cause they were short on the ultimate portion. The meat needed more salt but other than that it was good. The gravy is delish! Comes with stuffing and cheesy cauliflower as the sides. Sticky toffee pudding: Get! Cake is very moist and the syrup at the bottom is so good. I love toffee pudding in general! We also got the sundae form and it was equally as good!

We were visiting Chicago for a birthday weekend and chose this restaurant for a birthday dinner. I love the atmosphere of this building, kinda reminds me of a speakeasy. The service was top notch. We got the cast iron filet for the table it was plenty to share for four of us. The cocktails were really good as well. This is a little pricey but a great place to go to celebrate a special occasion.

I could not think of a better place to celebrate my birthday. Our waiter Dylan made it special. I will be back!

Decided to partake in the Sunday Roast tradition at Hawksmoor Chicago after being heavily target-marketed on Instagram with lascivious reels of the bone marrow gravy being poured slow-mo over glistening beef. Needless to say, their marketing team deserves a raise. Good location in River North in an old cable car powerhouse, with a moody yet upscale aesthetic. Didn't love being sat for our Sunday brunch in the far corner next to the waitstaff service station, but the upholstered bench seating was comfortable. The Sunday Roast is the star of the show, but there are options that you can select to enhance your experience. We selected the Ultimate Sharing Roast, which comes with all the items in the per-person portion plus the Cauliflower Gratin and the Bone Marrow Stuffing, baked in-bone. The presentation is wonderful and the real highlights were the rib of beef with bone marrow gravy, the perfectly crisp roasted potatoes, the parsnips, the gratin, and the Yorkshire pudding. The cabbage could have used a little more fat and seasoning for its roasting, the bone marrow stuffing was dry and required the addition of the gravy to be even partially enjoyable, and the additional bone marrow bone, which I found to be overkill. I adored the spicy and bracing Shaky Pete's Ginger Brew during the meal, which was a perfect foil to the rather heavy, savory foodstuffs. It was a beautiful 70°+ day in Chicago and frankly, this is a colder weather kind of brunch. Save it for a rainy day! Literally! Our service was excellent throughout the meal, and we felt very well taken care of. We ended with the Sticky Toffee Sunday, an absolutely decadent treat but in a manageable portion and proportion with the ice cream. We were then treated to a little extra, a duo or chocolate oatmeal cookies that, for me at the end of this extremely filling and indulgent meal, were one toke over the line. I did enjoy the courtesy bite I took. It's a spendy way to start your Sunday, but very enjoyable. It could easily feed three (or four with modest appetites.) I do want to return to sample the other desserts and have another of those cocktails!

Raw Oysters

It was a difficult day at work, and I was craving a steak! I set out searching for a place to get some, and my eyes found themselves gravitating toward Hawksmoor, especially their happy hour menu. I went in and discovered that while the restaurant is fine dining, they do have an area upstairs which has more of a pub vibe, but with the same menu. From their happy hour menu, I ordered an Old Fashioned, a Margarita, oysters (six raw, three fried), and the steak and fries. Outside of the happy hour menu, I ordered the Steelhead Tartare and a Peanut Butter Louis for dessert. The raw oysters were fine. They were of small-to-medium size, and one or two of them had a little bit of shell. No complaints about the fried oysters. They were fried to crisp perfection, and while they didn't taste fishy, they weren't exploding with flavor, either. At $2 apiece for both, I'm going to choose to be forgiving. Where it comes to the Steelhead Tartare, this was one of the stars of the night. The fish was of absolutely stupendous quality and allowed to shine, rather than being overpowered by everything else. It was accented just the right amount by a little bit of greens, a lightly citrusy and sesame-based sauce, and teeny-tiny rings of chili. These added a very subtle heat that made me wish my taste buds weren't already seared off. The tartare was served with some well-toasted, properly thin quality bread. In terms of the main event, the steak frites were alright. The fries were underwhelming. They had a good level of salt, but otherwise seemed like they were either not made with care, or had spent some quality time under a lamp. In terms of the steak, maybe this is me being an uncultured swine, but I felt it wasn't show-stopping. It had a little bit of seasoning (salt), wasn't at all chewy, and had some good, subtle meat flavors. However, I've also had absolutely amazing melt-in-your-mouth steaks, and this wasn't it. Now, I appreciate that rump roast tends to be on the leaner side, but so does Filet Mignon, and I've had great ones that *do* melt in your mouth. For dessert, I ordered a Peanut Butter Louis, and this was the other star of the night. I can see why this is a variant of something served at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Some of the inside of the cake was crisp, while the rest was soft and decadent. This is especially helped by the peanut butter. Everything comes together in delicious harmony. It gets me nostalgic for when Reese's Cups were actually great before they went cheapo on the ingredients, but I digress. When it comes to the drinks, the Old Fashioned and the Margarita were standard. They were well-executed, but beyond that, completely unremarkable. If you *do* seek something more amazing, they have them on the regular menu, but these cost eight dollars more. It's happy hour, beggars can't be choosers. I do appreciate that these two drinks were strong, and getting out of my seat after the meal, I could definitely feel them. In terms of value, getting a solid piece of meat, $2 oysters, and strong drinks is a great deal. However, as it is with me, I start getting some accoutrements, and the price goes up pretty steeply. Set your expectations wisely. If you're seeking to get some good food in your belly at reasonable prices, Hawksmoor's happy hour is the place for you. But, if you want an elevated cocktail or elevated steak, maybe look beyond the HH. When it comes to service, I want to award all the credit. Items came out fast, and the service was kind, attentive, friendly, and the servers worked together as a team. One final note. I am not someone who cares *that* much. However, I notice, and I share. For a place that calls itself fine dining, the silverware had aggressive spotting. I realize it isn't dirt and just water spots. Nonetheless, one would hope a place that touts itself as fine dining would have their stuff together in terms of polishing. Final verdict. While there were some winners of the night, the main event left me underwhelmed. Perhaps that's by design, but given the fries, I can't be so sure. I do know that I left having paid a pretty penny with only moderate satisfaction. Thus, I don't have a feeling of dying to return, be it the HH menu or otherwise.

Love me some sushi, so I was excited to try the California roll, although it was hard to justify it being $18!!! The crab was very minimal, as you can tell by the pictures... it was missing the classic California roll taste given barely any meat. The Mac and cheese side was good. Nothing too special. plus. But standard is the best word I can think of. Shareable portion, which is a plus. Service was excellent. The server was friendly and personable. Instead of feeling like a special occasion, it felt like we were on an assembly line, going through the motions. I discreetly mentioned my girlfriend's birthday to our server and astonishingly he immediately wishes her happy birthday and asks if she's turning 21 as a joke. That was the extent of the birthday celebration at Bar Mar...nice. The goal was to make my girl feel special on her birthday and the restaurant did nothing to promote that. Wow! The first time…read morewe came to the Chicago location of Hugo's Frog Bar, we had the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake and it was amazing - best I'd ever had. That was 12 years ago. Since then, I've had crab cakes all over the U.S. and Hugo's remained my gold standard. Tonight, 12 years later, we returned to Hugo's on Rush Street downtown Chicago. We had a 6 pm reservation on a Monday night. We were given the option to eat in the special Elevator Car, so we chose it. It was a bit tight getting into the bench seating but once in, we were quite comfortable and it was really quaint. I'm glad we chose it. Our server tonight was Stephanie O and she was amazing. So knowledgeable, so pleasant and very accommodating. We told Stephanie we planned to take it a bit slow, starting with cocktails. She took our cocktail orders and we took our time enjoying them, admiring our special Elevator Car and pondering dinner options. Of course, a Crab Cake was definitely happening! Stephanie checked in with us from time to time and when we were ready, we asked her to drop a Crab Cake order. Oh my - it was amazing, just like the last time! Just enough breadcrumbs in it to hold it together. Baked, then seared on both sides on the flat top and served with their house made remoulade. For us, this menu item and a service as great as it was from Stephanie and the rest of the team was enough of a reason to come to Hugo's. After we'd finished sharing the Crab Cake, Stephanie stopped by with the fresh fish options platter to explain each one to us, how it would be prepared and what it would be like. We nearly went for the Snapper but dropped back to our original thought of trying their Shrimp De Jonghe along with a dinner salad. So glad we did as the Shrimp De Jonghe was really tasty and just enough food. The salad and shrimp meal were both kitchen-split for us. Nice touch - thanks team! I have to add that we've had Shrimp De Jonghe somewhere else and we recall it as not being as good as Hugo's. I like how their breadcrumb on the shrimp here was less a breading and more of a dusting. I'd like to mention the rest of the staff we saw in action. The hostesses were quite pleasant, found our reservation and seated us with pleasure. The table team from the water guy, to him and others clearing completed items was excellent. The chef or one of the cooks brought out our split Shrimp De Jonghe. That was a nice touch. When a guest's order is wrong, management should communicate with the table and make an effort to resolve the problem not simply remove the food without discussing it. We absolutely will not be returning. The experience was nowhere near worth the money.

The crab cake was phenomenal, definitely better than what I had expected since this isn't exactly Baltimore. The glaze on top is absolutely perfect, and it is so thick and packed with fresh blue crab and minimal binder, finished with a bright lime-soy glaze. Excellent service too.

They are rude , the don't welcome you with a hello just a look up and down as if to ask WHAT DO YOU WANT . I even gave a compliment to kinda break the ice on the awkwardness, no response lol this normally would be all it took for me to turn around and not spend my money It was pretty hard getting seating anywhere thjs day so we decided to still grab a seat and maybe grab a cocktail depending on how our waiter treated us , and honestly thankful for her being so nice and accommodating and gracious we decided to stay and have lunch . Lunch was phenomenal ! I had the king crab roll Tempura black bass Branzino and the whipped mash potatoes Every single item 10/10 .

From the moment we walked in, we were greeted and escorted quickly to our table outside. Mirco was our server and we asked him for recommendations. He was so spot on it was amazing! We started with 1/2 dozed oysters and Tuna tartare. The tartare melted in your mouth and had a mild flavor. You could taste everything from the capers to the lemon in each bite. I'm not a huge oyster fan but my fiancé seemed to love them. Mirco recommended the Sardinian style ravioli filled with melt in your mouth short rib smothered in a rich mushroom and truffle sauce. Heaven!! She ordered the beet salad with salmon and gigantic grilled shrimp added. She just raved about it all. I appreciated great food but great service is what makes it a memorable experience. This checked all the boxes. 5 stars!

The Ribollita Toscana soup was delicious with just enough herbs to make the broth addictive. If you are at all a soup person, get this one. The fried calamari that we shared was plentiful, but not great. It didn't arrive nearly hot enough, and as it quickly cooled further, it was dry and a bit overdone. Would not order this again. Service was attentive and unobtrusive from the moment we arrived. Definitely going back, just not for the calamari.
