The food is good- but the price isn't. For example- I had the BBQ shrimp that was really delicious- with cheese grits. The shrimp is listed as $15 but cost $18. My friend ordered a shrimp po boy without the bread- and they added catfish and made a $18 lunch a $30 lunch. Then the waitress ran into a friend from high school and they were screaming- I get it but seriously- this is your place of work. As far as the food- it was good. The BBQ shrimp was great, the grits were nothing special. The friend shrimp was good. Catfish nothing tasty. The drinks were good- but all a little expensive for what you are getting. The cheese fries were pretty unique and tasty. I would ask about pricing if I returned bc I feel like we were up sold but not told that we were being up sold. Solid fast and friendly service. Closer to when Second Line opened, my other half and I would go to eat frequently. It was a date spot of ours. We would always get the verno poboy, and greens, spinach madeline, or beans and rice. Fast forward to 2023-2024, the past three times we've eaten there, the actual taste of these items has significantly decreased. Moreso the verno, but we've noticed the greens as too spicy sometimes, the red beans and rice not flavorful enough, and the verno is just completely unlike it was. It's all bread, the chicken isn't bangin' anymore and is largely carried by the mayo of all things. This stuff is now too expensive to justify the flavor difference. Really disappointing. read more

They were understaffed for the amount of customers, so it made for a long wait for our server between ordering appetizers to ordering food to getting refills of water/coffee/mimosas. Also, they were out of some dishes and their veggie quiche was misleadingly discripted as zucchini, squash and onion but actually had mushroom and onions. Now other than that, the food was yummy. This is a nice little casual spot. Like their sister restaurant next door, they could care less about covid precautions. But luckily their tables are spread out enough that it didn't matter. The food here was pretty good, even if not that special. What stood out to me (what stood out to everyone) was their fried catfish. My favorite dish from this visit was the crawfish and pimento cheese fries! Which is weird because I hate wet or soggy fries but when you partner them with seafood, have a good seasoning combo, and cheese it's a win! I made reservations for The Second Line, looking forward to returning to this Memphis landmark during my visit. The menu was all German food and signs out front said "Oktoberfest." What? It's mid-September. They only had German wine, which I hate. The server was really nice and very efficient, although I don't remember his name. He's the reason the place got 2 stars instead of one. Nobody at the host stand to greet me. The bartender handed me a menu. I looked at the cocktails and picked one out. As I was browsing the food, I became very confused. It was all German food? Gave up and started eating. I was halfway through my sandwich when the bartender showed back up so I could order fries. The sandwich...so bland and not much meat. I've had better Po Boys from fast food chain restaurants. The fries....also very bland. I finally get my bill. I went to New Orleans for the first time last year. One of the first things on my New Orleans bucket list was a shrimp po' boy. Despite all of my research on "the best" po' boys, I ended up leaving New Orleans highly disappointed in the sandwich. I thought maybe I just didn't like this style of sandwich until I went to Second Line in Memphis. The Second Line is just about as cute of a restaurant as you can get. Housed in a (literal) house in Midtown, you instantly feel welcome and at ease when you walk through the door. We went for lunch, and the all-day menu leans lunch, so that is when I would recommend going (although sandwiches for dinner are cool too). I have been wanting to try another po' boy since my disappointing experience in New Orleans, and The Second Line seemed to be as good a place as any to give it a go. Let me tell you, this shrimp po' boy was everything I was hoping for in NOLA, and more! The shrimp tasted fresh and were just lightly fried (meaning NOT greasy) and the sandwich was perfectly dressed. Others in our party had the oyster po' boy and loved it as well. Sides are really important to me and the Second Line has an excellent selection of tasty sides. In fact, we thought their greens were some of the best we've ever had. Spoiler- this is not my first time here. When I travel for work I tend to keep places like this in my back pocket to elevate the trip for others. And as usual this place slaps. Being a former Memphis Native I have lots to cheer about for Kelly English locations. I snagged an early reservation. The group was of an older crowd so I wanted to avoid any traffic or seating issues. The staff was perfect as always. Prompt and laid back with a tad bit of humor. I ordered a few things for the table and we were off to the races. First out were the pimento cheese fries with crawfish and andouille sausage. If you have not tried this you might as well toss your weekend plans aside and come order this dish. Also on the table we're the boudin egg rolls. Personally I feel putting random shit inside an egg roll is played out.... Nope. I love it. Much like a tortilla- I would eat anything stuffed in an egg roll. The boudin was no exception. So much flavor in this sausage. Additionally- one of the patrons at the table is a Louisiana resident and complimented how well it tasted. So - I'm sure it was legit. From there the rules of taking pictures of the food went out the window. Pasta and po boys piled up but -- images were not taken. I, obviously, snagged a picture of my all time favorite dish from this spot - shrimp and grits. I quickly be came " Mr oh boy " 'Al Kapone' when served. Still tastes the same as it did 6 years ago. But honestly way overpriced for the amount that was served. They do give you more bread if you ask. Shrimp Po-boy: Not enough shrimp! I dont like it when you have 1.5 bites left on the po-boy and there's no more shrimp. Oyster Po-boy: In my opinion, better than the shrimp. The oysters fried up were delicious. The menu item is called "roast white oaks pasture beef with gravy + swiss." YUMMY!!!!! You must ALSO try the "the verno- braised chicken thighs + swiss" po boy!" I should point out I'm more of a fish person than a beef person, but I would box someone to win a bite of their beef po boy. The fries and stewed greens are so good. I should add that vegans have a place in this space with the delicious veggie plate. I tend to get the same thing every time I go here, so these suggestions are a little unfair to the rest of the menu. Yet again, I must add that the cocktails are made to perfection! I am so very impressed by the owners' community engagement. He feeds people in need every New Year's Day and also collects items they might need, and gets them haircuts. Okay here we go, My name is Coree, Im visiting Memphis for the first time. Im staying at the hotel across the street (The Memphian). I was told by the front desk attendant about the restaurant & I have to say I think I really should have gone somewhere else. I ordered the Bee String Wings & Red Beans an rice. The Wings sauce was OUT OF THIS WORLD, but the wings its self tasted as if they were taken out of the microwave.. You can imagine how disappointed I was. I haven't tasted the red beans an rice, only because they didn't provide utensils. Hopefully the front desk can help me out with that. Now I would like to explain what my reasoning for writing this review is: A woman who's name I never caught popped her head outside to let me know my order was up, I walked inside from sitting outside the building, an I noticed my food sitting on the counter. Im not sure what exactly she was implying or if it was a racial thing, but she repeatedly told the woman that took the time to help me place my order, to make sure I paid. Like i was a criminal about to walk out the restaurant with said order. I can say i was not put together,due to the fact I had just woke up from a nap after being on the road for hours. I've been to second line more times than I can count and was super excited to introduce a friend to the restaurant after I had spoken so highly of it. Unfortunately, the experience was so poor that not only will I not be back but my friend wanted to try Iris(the restaurant next door owned by the same chef) that she's not going there either. To make it easier I'll number the issues we encountered: 1. 10 mins before we were acknlowdged either at the bar or at the hostess stand 2. When we got our table we waited almost 15mins before our waitress was able to get to us 3. We placed our orders: 2 shrimp poboys, 1 catfish poboy with onion ring sides, 1 order of the pimento sausage fries, and barbecue shrimp. It took over an hour to get our food, we were 5 mins from walking out when the waitress said our food was coming. We arrived at the restaurand at 12:45pm and didnt get our food until after 2pm. 4. The food came out with the wrong sides. If you've every had a shrimp poboy any where I'm sure it didnt come out with 6 pieces of shrimp with a cost of $16. 5. The kicker to all of this is despite the poor service and delay in food I tipped 18% because I tip regardless. When I checked my account, the restaurant charged me a different amount and increased the tip amount! The issue isn't the amount because its negligible and would cost me more time to go through and get it fixed but its the principle of knowing you cant trust the merchant you give your card. We should have known it would be bad when upon walking in we saw a table of eight without food and a server trying to make excuses for the kitchen. This place has a decent patio fronting Cooper, but other than that there was no ambiance. We started out with cocktails and apps, which were both good and convinced us to order entrees. Three of our entrees included fries, and when we got our food, only two were delivered. The two that we received were burnt. We requested new fries as well as the third order and were later told that the kitchen was unable to make a satisfactory order of fries and we would not be able to be served any. (They later still tried to charge us for these). After they weren't able to give us fries, they offered dessert. Instead of asking us what we would prefer, they dropped off two orders of bread pudding. Both were frozen/stale and one actually was covered in ice. We then asked for our check, which included all 3 orders of fries and was auto-gratted 20%. We requested the fries be removed and the new check came with 1 of the fries still on the check. Instead of arguing with the server, we paid the check. The manager, Tree?, then came out and offered to buy a single drink for our party of six to attempt to rectify the situation. My family has been patrons of this restaurant for years. This was such a bad experience, that we will NEVER return here. read more

Second Line's food is actually really good! It is based on New Orlean's cuisine. The food is very flavorful and tasty. My friend had the Redfish & Crawfish Pontchartrain, and she loved it! I had the Chubby Vegetarian Po Boy, which comes with mushrooms in a red wine sauce. Of course, there was a lot of bread like on all Po' Boys, but the mushrooms tasted amazing! I also had the red beans & rice! This dish was soooo good! For dessert, I had the Cookie Trio. It included a snickerdoodle cookie with honey, a chocolate brownie with nutella, and maybe a sugar cookie with caramel, I believe. It was soo good! My parents stated that they enjoyed the bread pudding! And, they love bread pudding! Please note, they rotate their desserts! So just because it's there one week, doesn't mean it will be there the next week unless it's their bread pudding or brownie. For drinks, I did not care for my original order, and I had it remade. I still did not care for it. I can't even remember the name of it. My friend did enjoy her drink, which I think was a Strawberry Margarita. Eventually, I ordered a French 75 with brandy, and it was nice! Now, though the food was really good, what actually made my experience was the management's customer service. After we did not have a pleasant experience with our server, the manager stepped in and rectified the entire situation. Chef Kelly came out to greet my niece (1st good sign), and was a gentleman to her and my sister. The servers were super helpful when I was asking the most questions (2nd good sign), and were ultra cool about it. Then the food came. Everything was top of the line. My wife had the shrimp po boy, and I had the Redfish/Crawfish Ponchartrain with Spinach. It was absolutely amazing! The key lime pie: do it. The drinks were exactly what we expected. If I had saved more room, I would have tried more of their selection. Next time we are in Memphis, we are coming back on a day when we can try the chicken and andouille dishes as well. I got the crab cake Benedict. The crab cake isn't actually seasoned. They rely on the sauce and the egg to be all of the flavor. The sauce is great and the crab cake does taste moist. Overall it's very bland. I would give it a 4/10. The bartenders recommendation to fixing the problem was to add salt to the edge of my plate and "dip" my food in it.
