    Negra combination
    Ruby S.

Dekalb Market Hall is overwhelming because of how many great options there are. When I'm in the mood for good Spanish food, the paella shack is my go to! The menu is simple: you select one of the combinations or create your own. I usually choose the Negra combination ($15), which comes with mouth-watering squid ink rice and a generous amount of calamari, shrimp, and mussels. The bowl also comes with peppers, pickles, and aioli. I'm not sure whether it's oil or aioli, but grease always soaks through the paper bowl when I order the Negra and once it got all over my white shirt. You can modify the order and add or take out ingredients. The combination is cheaper than creating your own, where the price adds up quickly ($17+). If you're not sure of what to get, you can ask the cashier for recommendations. They are super helpful and friendly! Lastly, it's unfortunate that this shop is in Dekalb Market Hall, where it's always difficult to find a seat. If you're paying ~$20 for food (including the tip you feel obliged to give on the iPad check out), you'd expect comfortable seating. Hopefully they can add some chairs in front of the paella shack!

Not the most economic nor generously portioned- but what it lacked in quantity, it more than made up in quality. I had the bomba squid ink rice with mussels. I was a bit hesitant as the cook takes from one of the 3 large vats of different paella rice just beyond the counter to fire up and add additional ingredients. Fear not- the rice is crisp and maintains unctuous chew. The flavors were deep, buttery and tasty. The combination of snap sugar peas, zucchini, chickpeas and al dente squid ink rice dabbed in garlic aioli is quite genius. Any protein could have gone with this and my miniscule mussels did not bother me one bit Bc the combination was already excellent. Next time definitely shrimp or something else. But it's a must try. Delicious!

    Paella with Shrimp and Mussels

I found this place for lunch being intrigued by Paella being made in less than an hour. The wait was around 15 minutes as I actually got some churros from the business next door. I got my paella and the looked was very appealing with the shrimp and mussels in the middle with the different sauces on top of each side of rice. The flavors were very present with a sweet and savory combo. It was a little too salty, but I really enjoyed the dish.

    Paella Valencia for $12
    Sal L.

I happened to be working in the area and found through Yelp all the wonderful, trendy restaurants located in the lower level of the Albee Square Mall. Very nice assortment of eating establishments of all types, but I chose The Paella Shack especially since I had just returned from a vacation in Spain, including Valencia. The paella here is ok. It was flavorful although the small, cut up pieces of chorizo and chicken were dry. In my opinion, this was a bit pricey dish for paella but it was a very nice sized portion. Like I said, having come from Valencia, a dish of paella at a food market or local restaurant would've cost half this price and been twice as good. But this is now trendy Downtown Brooklyn and everything here is overpriced because of the location. My coworker ordered the seafood paella which had about 4 mussels and a few shrimp, for $13 I believe. It looked very nice as well but I didn't taste his. He liked it. We took our meals outside to the Fulton Street, Albee Square seating area and ate outside as the weather was nice. Overall good food, nicely presented but not something I'd go back for. Clean restaurant and the service was pretty quick as your order was prepared.

Squid Ink with Shrimp and Calamari

Another tough decision awaited me as I walked into DeKalb Hall for a quick dinner before going to Broadway for a show. I stopped first for wine, and asked the friendly woman there about her recommendations and she suggested Paella Shack as one of her favorites. The choices include saffron rice, squid ink rice or regular rice, plus your choice of meat/seafood. $12 for base + $1-$2 for each added choice. There are also vegetables, choice of aioli, and pickled peppers. You can also choose from specialty options I chose the squid ink with shrimp and calamari plus the garlic aioli. They also have a salad and gazpacho but were out of the gazpacho. The rice had good flavor that hinted of seafood, and a blackish hue from the squid ink. It paired well with the shrimp and calamari, that were cooked well. The aioli was thick and plentiful, which I thought great until I realized that it overpowered everything and a little would have gone a long way. I would skip that next time, which is unlike me. The rice had a nice bite to it, the exact texture I expected. The biggest downside is that it isn't near seating of any kind, but only has a bar for standing at. I was in a hurry so that was okay, but I'd take it next time somewhere.

Don't forget about these small plates they also have.

Since it was a birthday celebration, we took our time and stayed a bit longer. Even though we ended up staying past their closing time, they didn't rush us to leave. The meal includes geoduck sashimi, jellyfish & mixed appetizer, soup, steamed fish, crab & lobster with sticky rice, abalone, steamed shrimp, noodles, and veggies. Some dishes were bigger than others. Both times I came they didn't have abalone so we substitute the dish for garlic scallop (which I prefer). The menu also says it comes with house special dessert but we never gotten any. For any seafood, it's market price plus they add a 30% processing fee, which is strange to me. For a Chinese restaurant which usually does not charge tax if you pay with cash, they charge tax here whether you pay by card or cash. The restaurant is pretty big and spacious. They have pretty large tables, suitable for parties and celebrations. There's a private space upstairs with 3 large tables for parties. The restaurant is pretty slow in the afternoon.

The items I would recommend the most are iron steak, crab rangoon, blue crab, snow crab legs, and crawfish. The seafood is fresh, and if you love seafood, this AYCE meal is a good value for the variety and amount you get. There is no limit to how much you can order at a time; you can order as many rounds as you'd like. Service: Service is excellent here; staff are friendly and very attentive. The staff are also nice about giving you another menu to place another order. They are generous with their portions and food unlike other AYCE places that seem to not want you to order as much. Ambiance: The restaurant is big and spacious; seating is comfortable. There are tables and booths that can accommodate both small and large groups. The restaurant is kept clean, and the decor is very nice. During the warmer months, there's outdoor seating in Mongolian-style tents on the patio that overlooks Surf Avenue and Luna Park. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant if you like seafood!

The sauce was once again the highlight, and it paired perfectly with the potatoes. My partner found it a bit salty, but for me, the seasoning was just right While they are currently Michelin Recommended, I truly believe they deserve a Star. I told our server this when she asked if it was our first time dining here and she found it similarly puzzling. That said, this sentiment is one rarely expressed these days, as Saint Julivert's longevity puts it in what I'd imagine to be an exclusive, highly coveted class of restaurants that have stood the test of time in the face of changing trends, the pandemic, rent, etc. And perhaps more importantly, it has stood the test of time *and* maintained its high level of execution and quality. Saint Julivert is a neighborhood spot as memorable as it is unassuming. We came here at around 7:30pm on a Saturday night. I live quite far from Saint Julivert which is the main reason I hadn't gotten here before this past weekend. Luckily, a friend who recently moved to the area was having a party, describing the offered fare as "drinks and light bites" -- code for "not sufficient for dinner" and an opportunity to find a fun restaurant nearby to try beforehand. Walking up to Saint Julivert was a bit of a thrill for me -- both because of how long it's been on my radar and also because it's nestled on a block that otherwise seems completely residential. The space itself is much smaller than I imagined, very cozy, friendly, and down to earth. We had, in my opinion, one of the best seats in the house, which was a pair of high tops by the kitchen with loads of space for folks (read: us) who like to order a bunch of smaller plates to share. To start, we got a round of cocktails. I had to go with the Kanpai Martini (vodka, gin, shochu, cap corse, guindilla), as I pretty much always start with the martini if one is featured on the cocktail menu, and my partner got the Puerto Escondido (mezcal, beet, grapefruit, jalapeño) which is a super tasty spicy mezcal marg variation. I then tried the Diamond District (mezcal, persimmon liqueur, cocchi americano) which is a variation of one of my other go-to drinks, a white mezcal negroni. No complaints here. Food-wise, we obviously leaned into the seafood here heavily. Tried to sample as much variety as possible and I'd say we did a pretty impressive job. We weren't able to finish everything but we tried our very best. Truly everything was exceptional so my usual letter grades aren't all that necessary because it was As across the board. Eats, below: Amberjack w/ tomato water, crispy shallot, shiso oil Ideal first dish, definitely had some amuse bouche qualities, being both light and bright. The fish was incredibly fresh and the concept overall with sophisticated with use of texture and flavor that was impressive in its subtlety and execution. Chicory Salad w/ blue cheese, walnut, persimmon, coffee cider vinaigrette Our one veggie of the night and it was well worth our while, fresh winter greens with that tried and true blue cheese/walnut combo made unique by the coffee cider vinaigrette which emphasized the sweet and earthy notes of the dish and brought everything together beauitfully. Wild Shrimp w/ salted kumquat, poblano pepper, pomelo If I had to give an award to most unique of the night, it would have to go to this dish. I've had a dizzying amount of seafood over the years and I've been lucky enough try to a lot of different types of things in a lot of different types of ways and this one stands out. Something about the flavor and texture of the mostly-raw shrimp with the delicate and aromatic citrus elements. Just impossibly fresh, bright, and delicious. Octopus w/ pipián verde, roasted tomatillo juice, cucumber, serrano A preparation I'm used to seeing served warm but I enjoyed it cold just the same. The overall flavor profile was predictable but the elements contributing to it were less so. The green mole was delicious and overall this dish was a perfect bridge between the lighter and the richer, a segue so perfect it was as if it was divinely ordained. Squid a la Plancha w/ pine nut, maitake mushroom, tinta, poblano The first of two warm dishes we ordered. A nice complement to some of the lighter dishes we had earlier in the meal that were more aromatic/vegetal/gardenia vibes, this dish was earthier, more umami and grounding. Jerked Hamachi Collar w/ mango-pickle mayo, lime Hard to finish with this because it was probably the richest of the dishes and we were already somewhat full by this point, but I ate as much as I could because it was just that good. The mango-pickle mayo was just sublime, the fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned beautifully -- altogether a playful and powerful way to end the meal.

I wouldn't have done my neighborhood justice if I didn't pay this beautiful restaurant a visit. I walked in here on a cold and quaint Monday night after a really long and exhausting day at work for my favorite treat. I got situated at the bar and ordered two dozen oysters on the half shell. The oysters came our looking phenomenal with a presentation that made me want to dig right in. Everything about these oysters are perfection. They are fresh, shucked with care so they retain their brine, they are a good size and taste phenomenal. The accompaniments on the platter are amazing. Cocktail sauce with freshly grated horseradish, a cucumber hot sauce that adds both heat and texture, a fat, generous wedge of lemon cut with Max juiciness in mind. This is one of the best oyster happy hours in Brooklyn by a mile and I say this with absolutely no exaggeration! The interior of this restaurant is also so beautiful with soft dim lighting and a clean inviting aesthetic. It's perfect for a cozy date night, intimate dinner or just a casual dinner with a little bit of oomph. Prices on most items are very reasonable, but the happy hour menu between 5-7 PM is an absolute steal! I deeply enjoyed chatting with my bartender Diego who is part owner of the establishment and learning how they procure their catch and personally taste the oysters they serve. You can just tell how much thought and care him and his partner pour in to running a beautiful neighborhood restaurant like this. Tucked in the quiet end of Red Hook right by the water, is Brooklyn Crab - a lively, coastal shanty themed restaurant serving up some seafood favorites... but on a cold day in early February the abandoned and frozen tiki bar downstairs and the residue of snow salt on the staircase leading to the restaurant only served as a faint reminder of brighter, sunny days that await us this summer in New York. I plopped myself on the bar seating as cold gushes of air swept in with the opening door. The heating was struggling but so were we - it really was just that cold. However dire these conditions were, I was here for my weekly ritual - two dozen oysters on the half shell. Trish the bartender was a great sport. We chit chatted about the weather and her California upbringing and everything in between. She was great company and a delight to talk to. When the oyster platter arrived I was met with instant joy. Nicely sized oysters, neatly shucked, briny and beautiful with the accompaniments I like. A cold glass of beer I had been slowly working on in the background. They only have the $1 Sunday oyster happy hour during the winter months. Staff simply can't keep up with the shucking when it's busier. I deeply enjoyed this meal as the sun shined in the glass enclosure and it started to warm up. Far away I could see the waves crashing on the dock, as I guzzled down the ocean's perfect food. I also ordered the peel and eat shrimp and they were very good. Nicely seasoned, with ample amount of lemon wedges to make this meal truly one of a kind. This is one of the best oyster happy hours in Brooklyn, and even though I am traveling away from home right now, I can't wait to return and bask in this sunlit bar one last time this winter. The fries and the burger were also really good. And the shrimp was soo flavorful. I think if we were to come again, would skip the wings - they were ok, though the service was really nice and allowed us to try two flavors (gave us separate sauces) - maybe if we had done just one flavor and let them sauce them themselves it would have been better? Super close to IKEA and unbeatable sunset views. Will definitely come again if every around the area.
