Hate to give it 4 stars instead of 5, a Columbus institution. Entrees are all great, mostly had them all (particular props to the Mother Mohawk). Issue is they don't know how to serve hot soup nowadays. Before the plague/Covid the Tomato Basil soup was heaven (and hot as hell). Now it's luke warm at best. Every time. And I've tried so many times. So skip the (amazingly tasty, but gazpacho temperature) soups and go straight to their epic/fratty entrees. read more

I have not been here since homeschool so it was great to be back! I came for lunch, and I'm glad I did because I forgot how bad parking is during peak times. Old rustic Mohawk...i love the artwork on the walls and forgot they had a bar! I ordered the chicken salad club, it was good! I appreciate the places that don't put grapes in their chicken salad. Very quaint and unique joint in the heart of German Village. Was able to get right in and seated even though I was with a large group. Our waitress was awesome and I lucked out with my choice of the Adobe Pork Wet Burrito. The thing was massive and very tasty! Tried the famous turtle soup and it was FANTASTIC! One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. The server couldn't be bothered to even bring napkins and utensils until I asked. This was after we got the fried Mac and cheese wedges which were generic Sysco brand and who the hell thinks it's ok to serve these with marinara? Try them with ranch please. I thought a safe bet was the grilled chicken sandwich but damn I was wrong, the chewy, old piece of chicken didn't even have salt or pepper on it, and what cook doesn't know to pound out the breast to keep it tender and juicy before grilling it? Toss it in Italian dressing after it comes off the grill for Christ sakes to give it some flavor if your using frozen breasts from a commercial food supplier. The pic is of the breast cut up as I tried to find a piece I felt ok about putting in my mouth. The bun was old and stale and crumbled to bits when I I cut into it. The place was busy as hell and I have no idea why, the server was so gruff I couldn't even bring myself to send the food back, it just would have been soooooo uncomfortable.The service was so bad we left what we thought was enough for the food with a tip and bounced. I've never experienced laziness in food preparation on the level of we can't even be bothered to season the meat. This restaurant is located in the heart of German Village and offers up a great selection of soups, sandwiches, salads, entrees, and more! They have some unique menu items such as turtle soup (if you are feeling adventurous) and their signature bratwurst that can come in an entree or in a sandwich. I ended up getting the Bratwurst sandwich that was made up of sauerkraut, caramelized onion, swiss cheese, and bratwurst on a bun with a side of potato pancakes. It came with sour cream for the potato pancakes and horseradish for the sandwich. The bratwurst was full of flavor and one of the best that I have had, and it worked well with all the other ingredients in the sandwich. The potato pancakes were golden, crispy, and tasty as well. I felt so stuffed after eating this meal that I took a long nap afterwards, but it was definitely a worthwhile experience! read more

First time ordering from this spot on Postmates, and was pleasantly surprised by the variety they have. We got the Sweet Potato Tots, Massive Mohawk Quesadilla, Fried Mac & Cheese Balls, and the Cajun Crab & Shrimp Pasta. The Quesadilla was exactly as it said: double stuffed quesadilla that will fill you up quick. The inclusion of Feta cheese was not welcomed, so get it without and you'll be fine. 3 types of meat on it and rice makes it a full meal in itself. The Fried Mac & Cheese balls were delicious, but the "Caraway" sauce included was not good (think of a horseradish-ranch hybrid); if it came with regular ranch, it'd been fine. The Sweet Potato Tots were interesting...probably not my favorite but the Sriracha Ranch sauce it came with was really tasty (use that sauce for your fried mac & cheese balls)! I only had a taste of the Cajun Crab & Shrimp Pasta, but the flavor was an awesome blend of the pasta and cajun spices. Would get that again in a heartbeat! She took way too long to just get a drink order... (wow, I'm.already thinking she doesn't want to serve us) Then when we got our drinks she had to get us a refill before she even took our order... It was 5 of.us... We chalked it up to short staff... She finally took our order - unfriendly as if we (black folk) should not be there... Yes, we were the only ones in there besides the cook we saw!! Maybe she was waiting to bring it all out at the same time...ok we understand... However you guessed it the food was warm, closer to getting a chill... Hey it's ok we waited long enough plus we are hungry... Second refill on drinks now already been requested!!! So food was just ok... Except my burger was under cooked, I had to send back! No problem, looks like only 1 cook... I will order something fast like a quesadilla.... Why did it take over 20 mins for me to get my chicken quesadilla with areas of the tortilla with just cheese and another area with nothing... Like grilled with nothing inside... At this point we have now requested another refill... I nibbed on what I could... Request the check we got that within 1 mins.... This is a shame that this type of service still exist... We ate here Saturday evening, November 28, 2020.  I was a part of a group of four and Amanda was our server.  She was absolutely wonderful - very attentive and charming. We all had sandwiches and draft beers - the food was fresh and the drinks were refreshing.  The cooks can prepare your meal to be vegetarian/vegan specific.  Half of our group were vegans and they were very pleased with their dinners.  The place is clean, comfortable, it exceeds COVID-19 prevention measures and the holiday decorations are beautiful.  I highly recommend eating here especially during these holidays.  You have to park on the street, but there are usually spaces available nearby.  I will definitely eat here again. read more

Small, local/neighborhood bar in Germain Village. Mostly American and German style fair. Half of the space inside is taken up by their center u-shaped bar. I was with a large group of 14 friends. Not enough space to shift tables together, so we were split between tables in the front of house and back of house. Our waiter did a great job. No mess ups. Friendly demeanor. We got our drinks fast. He shared with us all the specials that were serving, and answered any questions as he went down the line. My friend and I were both stumped on what to pick so we each got a dish and split half and half. I got their Smoked Chicken Ravioli. Tara got their Bratwurst entree. Both had good flavor. The bratwurst had a strong flavor, but can't put my finger on the herb. Of course, I like Alfredo/cheese based sauces and chicken, so I was loving the smoked ravioli. My husband had been there before, but it was my first time today. It's quirky, and it has been around forever. Their menu is extensive with someone for everyone. The dining room is very small, so I wouldn't recommend during prime time. My husband got a beer, and they had some interesting options on draft, including local breweries, though their selection wasn't huge. We started off with appetizers of tomato basil soup and rum cake (dessert first, why not?). My husband loved their rum cake already, but surprisingly he loved the tomato basil soup as well. It is very interesting but flavorful. My husband had to get the pulled pork quesadilla again. Very flavorful with a bizarre combination of pulled pork, bbq flavors, pickles, salsa, and sour cream. It surprisingly worked. Lastly, I tried their sriracha coleslaw. Also, bizarre, but good, yet very spicy. Our hodge podge of entries matched the breath of the menu. We will be back. read more

I've been to the Old Mohawk a few times now, and for some reason I never saw fit to give it a review. Perhaps that's because the restaurant is such an institution, or perhaps it's because it's so unassuming. Whatever the reason, Old Mohawk deserves a little love tossed its way. The atmosphere is a definite step above dive bar, but it also has a lot more character than a standard tavern or whatnot. A large wooden bar juts out in the middle of the restaurant, but there's also ample seating -- the usual blend of booths and standalone tables. In other words, there's really nothing exceptional about the feel of the Old Mohawk...yet there's a certain comfort to it that I can't quite put my finger on. The menu is surprisingly large, and features a wide array of sandwiches, burgers, and other items -- none of which are overly pricey. I have to admit that I get the same thing every time I go in: a French dip. It's what brought me there in the first place, early this year. I had been craving a good French dip, and couldn't find one anywhere. On my girlfriend's suggestion (she'd been there before), we tried Old Mohawk, and indeed, the French dip was *exactly* what I was looking for. Here's the thing: we normally like to explore different restaurants and try new cuisines etc., but there's something to be said about having a classic done right. And that's really what Old Mohawk is all about. Based on what others I've been there with have had, as well as my own experience, there's nothing overly exceptional about the food, and yet all of it is essentially good, familiar food done well. I also want to mention the service. The servers have been good for all the visits, but on my most recent trip, when the restaurant was almost full, I was particularly impressed. Our food took a little while longer to come out than usual, but none of us were concerned. That being said, I noticed our server (without checking in with us) was regularly eyeing our table and looking back toward the kitchen with a concerned look on her face. This was really subtle, but I could tell that she *cared* that our food had yet to arrive, and it looked as though she went back to the kitchen a couple of times to get them to hurry it up. Most servers would just wait for the order to be up and serve it when ready, so I was simply a little impressed by our server's attentiveness. Ultimately, the Old Mohawk isn't the kind of place I could give a five-star review to, but it really is an excellent place for when you want a certain kind of comfort food in a very casual, relaxed atmosphere. read more

A group of us came for restaurant week. We had a group of 11 people but due to spacing we split into two groups. Additionally there was a 45 minute wait. Service here was fantastic - Shane was fast and efficient at bringing out orders. Salad was good - it had plenty of bacon and the dressing was like a vinaigrette mixed with ranch. Food was a bit underseasoned but other parts of the dish were also overseasoned. The vegetables served have no seasoning. The gravy served with the mashed potatoes was overseasoned. Also, the potatoes had a bit of a grainy texture. The steak as well was underseasoned. Tenderness was fine, but the flavor was not there. By putting salt on steak, you end up achieving flavor in the crust but not in the entire cut of meat. The bacon was not crispy either. The buckeye special was good. It had good balance between peanut butter and chocolate, and there was a pecan crumble. It was not overly sweet either. read more

Drove out of my way to visit this restaurant during a day trip to Columbus. Our server didn't say hi or introduce himself. He dropped off waters and walked away without asking if we wanted something else to drink or even giving us their offerings. I knew what I wanted immediately and had my sister order for me while I ran to the lady's room; when I came back, she informed me that our server wouldn't take my order because the menu item I wanted "is not very good, I'll wait for her to come back". I ended up ordering something I didn't even want bc the server had insisted that the mac n cheese was bland... and the burger I got was also bland. Tasted like a school lunch, and overpriced. It looked great, but something was missing. It was not deep brownish red, but was grayish tan, and was quite bland. Service was friendly, but the food took a good while to come out. A standout is the hummus appetizer, that was very tasty, and came with lots of fresh vegetables and pita corners. Prices are reasonable. My wife and I have been going to The Mohawk for years, and I even have a T-shirt. That's the highest of honors! The mid-sized restaurant and bar in the heart of German Village is everything you'd expect it would be. The decor on the walls is antiques and original, local artwork for sale. They have this interesting antique gas pump in the back, with the top lit up. The food is consistently good. It's pub fare, and excellent pub fare at that. Not too many lite options, but if you're coming there looking for lite options, you're in the wrong place. I usually have their french dip sandwich, served with potato chip (unless substituted for an upsale) and a cup of Au Jus. But really, everything else I've had has been excellent. The quesadillas are superb. The staff is always beyond friendly. One of my buddies from my college years works there, and he's been there for at least ten years. That will tell you a little about how the staff feels about the place. One time, my whole family was there eating and a friendly guy at the bar started chatting with us. We just thought, "Nice guy". That's what type of place it is; friendly. Later on, the server came up and told us that he was one of the owner, and that he had taken care of our bill. And thus, solidified our love for The Mohawk. The Mohawk has been around for a LONG time, so you can't really knock the consistency it brings to the table. Obviously, people love the place, and when I was here for lunch on a Monday, it was packed. Is it the best restaurant in Columbus? Far from it, but it delivers solid food and has a pretty large menu, so you're bound to find something you like. This was my first time eating here, and it took awhile to decide on one item. I ended up with the spicy buffalo chicken sandwich and a bowl of the chorizo soup that was on special. At least, I think it was some kind of chorizo soup from what I remember, and it was delicious. If you see it on the board, go for it. My buffalo chicken was pretty standard. I enjoyed it, but I didn't need to come back the next day to get it again. It was definitely your standard pub fair, and I can appreciate that, because that's some of my favorite food. However, I don't usually go out of my way for it, and being far from me, this place isn't the exception. My friends, who have been there more than I have, say the Adobo Pork quesadilla is the way to go. That, or the Firebird, and both of those sounds right up my alley as well, so if I find myself back down around German Village, I'd give one of those a shot. I love the neighborhood tavern atmosphere, and our server was really nice. I imagine if I lived within a half mile radius of the place, I'd be here often. I've been to the Old Mohawk many a time over the years. It is definitely one of my favorites in the German Village area. The locally owned business has been around for 70 years. So, they must be doing something right. It's not a particularly large place. It's an old brick building typical for the area with lots of windows. It definitely has that old world neighborhood charm of a pub. Folks are pretty friendly here. Walk-in and wait for someone to direct you to a table. Seating can be cramped, especially when busy. I think over the years, I have really only had to wait for a table once or twice. About the parking -- it is street parking. I've never had an issue locating a spot, although my parallel parking sure needs some practice! The turtle soup is one of their most notables. The first time I tried it ... I thought ... but little friendly turtles? Once you get past the unusual of "turtle" it is delicious! Its similar to a beef vegetable soup in a tomato based broth. Tonight, I had one of their special sandwiches, the Mohawk Garbage Burger. It was an excellent burger, probably one of the best I've had in a long time. I'm not sure of everything that was on it, but there were french fries, fried onions, mac 'n cheese bites, tomato, lettuce, barbeque sauce. It was served on an onion bread bun and required a toothpick to hold it all together. It normally came with chips, but I upgraded to their onion rings. My dining partner ordered their BELT sandwich which he raved about. It did look really yummy. The menu offers a host of different pub options, from appetizers, soups, salads, entree's and sandwiches. I'd say the sandwiches are there main focus. Even though they are located in German Village, the menu is not especially focused on German cuisine. They do offer reuben sandwiches. Prices are quite reasonable with most items under $10. Portions are good sized. They have a full bar. Service was excellent. Their servers are quick, attentive, quite personable and know how to navigate the tight space as well. So, if you are looking for a good casual dining experience, you will want to give this place a try. read more

I was looking for somewhere interesting to eat dinner for a casual Saturday evening in German Village, and remembered that I had bookmarked the Old Mohawk for turtle soup. Ah hah, I thought to myself, just how adventurous is potential-new-boyfriend? After two hours of intensive book-browsing at the Book Loft and a good stroll and sit in Schiller Park, we moseyed over to the Old Mohawk, which was busy, but we got a table in the front corner within a few minutes. The ambiance is a bit too loud for first-date conversation, even though we were in a quieter corner of the restaurant. We both got the "1/2 Salad or Soup & Sandwich" -- the waiter was kind enough to explain that I could get a 1/2 salad AND soup (the conjunctions in the menu description are slightly deceptive), so I got a bowl of the turtle soup and the nature salad. I probably wouldn't have known that the soup was turtle without someone telling me, since it was just like a tomato-based vegetable soup with chunks of meat. I always forget how much I don't like raw walnuts though, but after pushing them to the side of the plate, the salad was very good. Patrick (cutesy moniker still being discussed) had a Reuben with his bowl of soup, and suggested that I make a note that the iced tea is made from a powder and not actually brewed. Our server kept our waters and the tea filled throughout the meal. It's not really a scene that I would immediately revisit, but if someone suggests it again, I'd come back. I had one of their burgers here and it was very good. I had the Mushroom Bacon Cheeseburger and I really enjoyed it. It was big, juicy and had a ton of cheese. While the burger meat could have been seasoned just a bit more, I still really enjoyed my meal. I also tried the fries and onion rings and those did not disappoint either. There were a ton of other items on the menu so if I go back, I'd probably try the other stuff since everything sounded good. read more

The place: The Old Mohawk is located in the heart of German Village. It's in a very old building that I've heard is a former brothel and speakeasy. Brick walls, wood floors, a dark, warm, lamp-lit atmosphere. The tables are close together surrounding a small bar. It's a small space; almost always crowded. The front windows look out on the intersection of Mohawk and Kossuth - German Village is a cool sight while enjoying a delicious meal. The service: EXCELLENT! I've been to the Mohawk twice, and both times I've been seated promptly. My server each time was top-notch. The first waitress I had was literally one of the nicest people I've ever met! Even though the place was packed during both of my visits, our food came out quickly. The food: I've had too different dishes at the Mohawk: the first was the bratwurst sandwich with potato pancakes. It was one of the best I've had, and easily rivaled Schmidts' brat sandwiches a few blocks away. The second time I had the famous Mother Mohawk sandwich. The sandwich was on rye bread with a heaping pile of roast beef covered in warm chicken salad. One of the best sandwiches I've ever tasted! I've also had an appetizer: the blue cheese kettle chips. They were great. I went once with my girlfriend, and she had ravioli and enjoyed it. I went once with my mom, and she had the Reuben, and enjoyed it very much as well. I've had carrot cake at the Mohawk once, and my girlfriend tried a pumpkin roll. They were both DELICIOUS. The waitress informed us that they bake their desserts daily, and feature different ones each night. The drinks: Top-notch rotating beer selection for a restaurant this size! They've got the normal standard beers on tap, and last time I went they had a few Great Lakes brews, as well as a few Elevator Brewery selections on tap. My girlfriend had a cosmo and enjoyed that. The prices: very reasonable for the food, service, and location. The crowd: normally pretty busy, but the staff handles the rush well, and the German Village patrons are nice and friendly. The Old Mohawk is a great place nestled in German Village. The menu is both modern and traditional with lots of options that work for various diet types. I had the Bistro Salmon Salad that had feta, olives, salmon and a balsamic dressing. My friend had a grilled cheese with bacon and chips with a side salad. Portions were large and service was great! Beer and drink selection had a good variety along with a funky vibe on the decor that I liked. It was busy, but people moved fast and the kitchen had our food out fast! Stopped in for dinner on a Saturday early evening. Place was just over half full so getting a table was not a problem. I ordered the cajun shrimp and crab pasta. And we also ordered Gouda mac and cheese bites. The mac and cheese bites came out first and were delicious. Very rich and cheesy. They were fried perfectly so there wasnt an excess of oil dripping off them. Worth getting again. The pasta was also very tasty. Pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauce was rich and creamy. I was a little disappointed with the seafood though. The shrimp was very very tiny. Like the size of maybe a dime. And the crab meat was a little light on the quantity also. There was enough to know there was some there, but not enough to get a good bite full. There was several other items on the menu that I would like to try so I wont have any issue on returning.
