Mini wedge salad
Lorelei H.

My cousin is a regular here, and this was his choice for a birthday dinner. Hopefully that illustrates The Monks consistent quality! We came during happy hour, so the prices were good, and we ended up with way more food than we needed! The wait staff was amazing. They accommodated my grandpa, who is in a wheelchair, and even helped my grandma into her chair. Beyond above and beyond. If you order the sausage sampler, let them know if you can handle spicy food. It came with a bratwurst and a "rotating sausage". They had a chicken jalapeño sausage which I loooooved, but it would have been way too spicy for some of my other family members. Another standout: The short rib poutine. This is what my cousin ordered, and man was it yummy. It's on the appetizer menu, but he ordered it as an entree. We also ordered a mini wedge salad, which was plenty large, and pretzels for the table. The pretzels were pretty good, but in my opinion, could have had more salt on them. The beer cheese, curry ketchup, and mustard that came on the side of the meal was also great! Ps. There are a ton of taxidermy animals on the walls. I thought it really made it feel like an authentic tavern, but I know some people may have aversions to stuffed animals :p

The rusty monk!! So happy they're back. Ive missed the good beer, good food, and good vibes. They got their alcohol license! And are back to serving delicious beer. I love me a Hefeweizhen or a Belgian beer. I also think their food has definitely been elevated. Got the beer braised short rib and OMG absolutely delicious. Also had to try their staple braztel. Cannot wait to come back for their pretzel, currywurst, and lamb stroganoff, short rib poutine, and charcuterie board. Perfect date night. Dinner for one. For groups. Bring your kiddo while you enjoy a beer. 1000% recommend. Welcome back to whittie Monk Pub

So happy to have The Monk Gastropub back in Whittier. I was a big fan of their old location, and this return absolutely delivers. The Belgian-inspired food is comforting, flavorful, and done right. We tried the short rib poutine, which was rich and savory with tender meat and a great balance of gravy and fries. The fish and chips were excellent--crispy beer batter, nicely seasoned, and not greasy at all. The standout for me was the brätzel: a juicy sausage wrapped in pretzel dough, served with sauerkraut. Simple, indulgent, and incredibly satisfying. If you're craving hearty Bavarian food and were missing this spot like I was, The Monk is back and worth the visit. Highly recommend.

We were in town for work and found this gem! They were so nice and offered food suggestions and samples of beer. The sausage sampler was so good and the sour beer was a great compliment. We would definitely go back here when we're in town.

Deelicious bread, crispy and soft. Use the mustard not the other sauce

Great food and atmosphere, it was strange to me why it was a bit empty when we came in. We all got to try some delicious items but the best by far was the short rib poutin with tater tots! It's definitely a must, replace the fries and do it with tater tots . On the other notes ? Service was fast and attentive, the restaurant is clean without a doubt and so we're the restrooms. Great place for a drink and some food.

I went here last night, and it was just as good as the original location! Friendly service, great food, great beer! For food, we ordered the Short Rib Poutine, Fish and Chips, and Sausage Sampler. The poutine was great, very flavorful. I know that the sauce is made with mushrooms, but they actually included mushrooms in it, which gave it a rustic feel. The fish and chips were just as great, fish had great flavor and was super crispy. Sausage platter was also good, but one of the sausages was spicy as heck, so just a fair warning. For drinks, we got the Frulli beer, which was perfectly refreshing in the Southern California heat. Service was fantastic. Our server Ruben gave great recommendations for food, and checked in on us frequently. He made conversation with us, and made us feel super welcomed, almost as if he knew he might be looking at returning regulars... The inside was a little loud with the music. It looks like they kept a lot of the decor from the first location, just giving this a new home. I will say that the price of the beers was a little steep, i think it came out to $14 each. But overall, i really enjoyed the service and the food, and would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for delicious rustic comfort food

The rusty monk is back!! My boyfriend brought me to this "new place" in uptown and to my surprise its a cherished foodie restaraunt ive enjoyed years ago! The ambiance is the same warm and cozy restaurant i once remembered. We ordered the clam chowder, a bavarian pretzel, a fried chicken sandwich, and the veggie shepherd's pie. *CHEFS KISS* Cant wait to return! All the food was so delicious and the service was fast and friendly!

THEY'RE BACKKKK!!! I missed this place! Beer and food on point. Not much to say other than all food and beer are delicious! They now serve breakfast too! Amazing service! Ruben is the man! Thanks for your hospitality!

Beer braised short ribs

The food, beer and wine choices were excellent! We were able to enjoy the Dodger Angels game and see SoFi prep for FEFA. Ruben was our server and he did not hesitate to offer samples of their beers and make recommendations on the dishes.

Uptown was sorely missing a European style pub. But ever since the Monk has returned it's become my go to place for excellent food and an excellent list of international beer. . A really good happy hour and an excellent staff make the Monk the go to spot in Uptown Whittier.

Delirium and green chimay

Bartender Ruben was so sweet and had really good service. Stumbled on the place walking through. Has premium beer on draft and a cool place to chill and catch a sport game.

The Monk is fully back! It's been back for a while, but I wanted to leave a review. Great food and drink as usual. The servers are friendly and really add to the experience. Great happy hour and full menu. If you loved it before you will be glad to return and if you've never been...you won't be disappointed.

Some places sit in the back of your mind for years…read more I first came to Macallan Public House more than a decade ago on a date and always intended to return. Life happened, years passed, and somehow I never made it back. Fast forward to today: I was driving my Tesla, jokingly asked Grok to take me somewhere for a beer, and it pointed me right back here. Walking in felt like revisiting a place that had been quietly waiting in the background of my story. The centerpiece is still the incredible bar. Shelves stacked floor to ceiling with whiskey bottles, glowing green tile behind the taps, warm lighting, and enough character that you can spend half your time simply looking around. It's the kind of room that feels both energetic and comfortable at the same time. I grabbed a seat at the bar, watched a soccer match on the TVs, and ordered an Old Fashioned. It arrived exactly the way I hoped it would: large clear ice cube, generous orange peel, balanced and smooth without trying too hard. Just a well-made classic cocktail. What stood out most was the atmosphere. These days I'm much more likely to be exploring hiking trails, photographing wildflowers, or driving mountain roads than spending time in bars. Twelve years ago, places like this were a much more regular part of my life. Coming back reminded me why I enjoyed them in the first place. Good conversation, a comfortable seat, a quality drink, and no rush to be anywhere else. The beer taps looked extensive, the whiskey selection seemed endless, and the entire place struck a balance between neighborhood pub and whiskey destination. Funny how a random AI navigation suggestion brought me back to a place I'd been meaning to revisit for over a decade. Glad it finally did. 5 stars.

My go to meal here is specifically something light and good. Don't want anything too heavy, especially dancing on the dance floor, lol! The Irish Country Salad I posted in the pic has apples, goat cheese, candied walnuts, croutons, frisee, radicchio, drizzled with honey vinaigrette. I highly recommend this salad when coming here! Our server, Devin was pretty good despite the place was packed and he had alot of tables to wait on. My food came out pretty quick and he did check up on our table from time to time which is awesome. Never had an issue here service wise. Wednesday nights are always a fun night here with food, singing, and dancing!

There is two sections the front and back, the front is where you dine in or sit at the bar, the back is where folks play board games, not my thing but looks fun. We sat down and were greeted quickly. The waiter was very attentive and gave recommendations ect., they have a monthly special based on a fun character. There are tvs playing game streams (not sports). I ordered a smash burger w/ sweet potato tots. The smash burger came with two patty's, lettuce, tomato, pickles, cheese and the tots came with a unique smoky flavored sauce, it was surprisingly delicious and executed perfect. I really enjoyed the meal and the price was very fair. Not your regular spots bar, it's a gammer bar restaurant with delicious food, recommended if you're a local who wants great food in a quiet ambience without all the screaming and yelling a sports bar gives.

I don't even know where to start--Guildhall absolutely blew me away…read more Being in Uptown Whittier and surrounded by so many spots, it takes a lot for something to stand out--but Guildhall delivers on every level. From the moment you walk in, the ambiance hits you. It's elevated, welcoming, and has that perfect balance of modern energy with a laid-back vibe. The food? Next level. Every dish that came out was crafted with intention--you can taste the quality, the creativity, and the consistency. Nothing felt rushed, nothing felt basic. It's the kind of place where you go thinking you'll try a few things and end up wanting the whole menu. And let's talk about the drinks... perfectly balanced, beautifully presented, and actually memorable. Not just your typical cocktails--these are the kind you come back for. Service was just as impressive. Attentive without being overbearing, knowledgeable, and genuinely welcoming. You can tell the team cares about the experience, not just turning tables. I'm new to really exploring more spots around Whittier, and I can confidently say--this is one of those places you keep in rotation. Whether it's a date night, night out with friends, or just pulling up solo at the bar, it hits every time. Do yourself a favor--go check out Guildhall. Thank me later.

I'm honestly very disappointed…read more We ordered delivery from what used to be one of our favorite local restaurants. Three years ago, we dined here and had an amazing experience, which is why we were excited to order again. Unfortunately, this meal was one of the worst restaurant experiences we've had. I ordered the pork ribs and fried shrimp. The ribs were extremely dry--so dry that they tasted like they had been cooked days earlier and reheated multiple times. They were nothing like the ribs I remembered from previous visits. After just a few bites, I started feeling uncomfortable. The fried shrimp was equally disappointing. It had almost no flavor at all and tasted bland and uninspired. My husband ordered the burger, which was advertised as a blend of Wagyu and regular beef. We were expecting something special, but the patty lacked flavor and the quality was disappointing. What surprised us even more was that we live only five minutes away, yet the burger bun arrived completely soggy. The packaging was also poor. The food came in cheap plastic containers without any ventilation holes. For fried foods especially, proper packaging is important to prevent steam from ruining the texture. It felt like very little care was put into preparing the order for delivery. To make matters worse, both my husband and I experienced stomach discomfort and excessive gas afterward, and we were still feeling it the next day. What makes this experience especially disappointing is that this was my husband's birthday dinner. I chose this restaurant because of the wonderful memories we had here years ago, but the food quality was nowhere near what we remembered. I genuinely cannot understand how food of this quality was considered acceptable to send out to customers. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was so disappointing that I felt compelled to share it. I sincerely hope the restaurant takes a closer look at its food quality and delivery standards.

My family and I decided to visit for the first time for British cuisine. It's not a far departure…read morefrom foods of other cultures around the locality, but you'll notice differences between British and American English, for example. Many of their dishes include chips, which during my visit, resembled steak fries due to their thickness. You'll also see that curry is a signature dish in the menu, which reflects how Anglo-Indian cuisine has maintained popular influence in the United Kingdom. I ordered Cutty Sark's curry with chicken, rice, and chips at medium spice. The name is derived from a British merchant vessel that operated during the late 1800s. The curry had a mix of savory and sweet flavors, which reminded me of both Japanese and Indian cuisines at the same time. I couldn't say with certainty that the curry fit into just one cuisine. Packed with some heat and bold in spice, it's a delightful and large dish if you desire a lot of flavor. Where the curry went a little off course was the addition of celery. The petiole is strongly flavored and distracts from the curry in my perhaps controversial opinion. Curry seems to better mix with potatoes and carrots. I tried some of the bacon sarnie as well. The word "sarnie" is an affectionate diminutive for "sandwich." American bacon usually comes from pork belly, which provides a flavorful yet oily crispiness. However, the British variant usually comes from the loin, which is meatier and leaner. I thought of the bacon here as similar to a savory ham. The sarnie bread is fried in fat to emphasize buttery flavor. The restaurant, filled with English decorations, has the style of a cozy and dim pub. There's a good amount of small wooden booths with cracked leather seating. Our server was really nice and made sure we got everything we needed despite the busyness of the restaurant. For example, my curry came with a chutney, and I had asked for a lid to take it home. While I forgot to take the chutney home, she went outside as she noticed that we took the back exit to look at their double-decker bus. She even offered to take a picture of us. The service deserves a lot of kudos, and we were grateful for her consideration.

However, after our experience last weekend, I don't know if I'll be returning any time soon. We went to celebrate Father's Day and my birthday and we're seated quickly. While the restaurant wasn't terribly crowded, the service was awful. The blonde waitress with the British accent was very rude and yelled at my son's (15, 18, and 21) which they later said made then feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. The service was very slow and we only had one water refill, despite asking repeatedly, in almost 3 hours. They were also out of multiple items including scotch eggs, sausage rolls, steak and ale pies, and sticky coffee pudding (they only had two). We never received our scotch eggs and sausage rolls and it wasn't until I asked about them after the entrees came that I was told they had run out. And we were never told that the beef wellington, which we ordered in place of the steak and ale pies that they had run out of, was almost $20 more than the steak and ale pies. Then, the bill came and the scotch eggs and sausage rolls were still on the bill, which I failed to notice at the time, so we had to return and ask for a credit for those two items. This was the worst experience we've had at this restaurant. We've had the blonde waitress before and she can be abrupt but this time, she crossed the line into being downright rude and we all felt unwelcome as a result. And to receive the treatment and have this many issues while celebrating special family events was disappointing. I'm not sure if and when I'll be back after the poor treatment we received which is a shame because I do love their food.
