Some places sit in the back of your mind for years. I first came to Macallan Public House more than a decade ago on a date and always intended to return. Life happened, years passed, and somehow I never made it back. Fast forward to today: I was driving my Tesla, jokingly asked Grok to take me somewhere for a beer, and it pointed me right back here. Walking in felt like revisiting a place that had been quietly waiting in the background of my story. The centerpiece is still the incredible bar. Shelves stacked floor to ceiling with whiskey bottles, glowing green tile behind the taps, warm lighting, and enough character that you can spend half your time simply looking around. It's the kind of room that feels both energetic and comfortable at the same time. I grabbed a seat at the bar, watched a soccer match on the TVs, and ordered an Old Fashioned. It arrived exactly the way I hoped it would: large clear ice cube, generous orange peel, balanced and smooth without trying too hard. Just a well-made classic cocktail. What stood out most was the atmosphere. These days I'm much more likely to be exploring hiking trails, photographing wildflowers, or driving mountain roads than spending time in bars. Twelve years ago, places like this were a much more regular part of my life. Coming back reminded me why I enjoyed them in the first place. Good conversation, a comfortable seat, a quality drink, and no rush to be anywhere else. The beer taps looked extensive, the whiskey selection seemed endless, and the entire place struck a balance between neighborhood pub and whiskey destination. One of the very few places in the OC that I love going to with my close friends on a Wednesday night. Especially when the Art Of Sax plays here! My go to meal here is specifically something light and good. Don't want anything too heavy, especially dancing on the dance floor, lol! The Irish Country Salad I posted in the pic has apples, goat cheese, candied walnuts, croutons, frisee, radicchio, drizzled with honey vinaigrette. I highly recommend this salad when coming here! Our server, Devin was pretty good despite the place was packed and he had alot of tables to wait on. My food came out pretty quick and he did check up on our table from time to time which is awesome. The food was good. The sweet potato fry's were great. I did not like the 3% added to the check for no reason. Update: I'm editing my review after a comment from what I assume is the manager....CORRECTION-they are located in Brea, not Downey (which is very clear on the location in Yelp. There is free parking in the lot and the bathrooms were cute and clean. Very cut ambiance inside giving genuine Irish pub vibes. We sat at a huge round table that accommodated our large work group, so that was nice as well. The service was really great. Our server was super friendly, attentive and just overall very nice and refilled our water often and checked on us often and we really liked him. I had the yummy lychee martini and overall the cocktails were all really good however they were very pricey even on happy hour so that was a bit surprising especially since I paid the bill for the group! We ordered guacamole and chips and it was really really good and I highly recommend. Macallans Public House is located in downtown Brea at the end of Birch Street. We ate dinner nearby and decided to stop by for a few cocktails afterwards. The interior has brick walls, great light fixtures, and a warm cozy feel. We originally sat in the lounge area on the left when you enter, but some of the seats are showing a little wear. The main dining area has two seat booths and tables, but we ended up sitting at the bar since the booths were all occupied. They also have outside seating along the front of the building. They have the largest menu of whiskey and scotch I have ever seen with many brands, styles, and different years of each. If you fancy whiskey and scotch, this is the place to go. My first drink was the Banana Bread martini (brown butter bourbon, banana liqueur, lemon, allspice, cane, $15). This was an amazing and delicious drink, perfectly balanced with all flavors present. It was literally like drinking a liquefied slice of banana bread with a light spice. This cocktail is probably in my top three of all the new drinks I've tried this year. Her first drink was the Pink Lady (coconut rum, lime, peach, dragon fruit, $15). It was also balanced with a nice level of sweetness. It comes with a tajin rim, and the peach and dragon fruit give it a good, distinct flavor. She liked it so much, she ordered a second one. I should have followed her lead and got a second banana bread martini, but instead thought I'd try the Dreamsicle (vodka, lime, orange juice, coconut cream, cane, $15). It was a nice creamy coconut forward balanced drink with orange juice in the background. It was good, but it nowhere as good as my first drink. After our first round, we were still a little hungry so we ordered the chips and salsa. There was a good serving size of the chips and they were very good. The guacamole was very fresh, and the salsa verde had good flavor. I wish the serving size of both were a little larger, but no complaints. We happened to visit on a Monday night, and discovered that they have trivia on Mondays. We also do trivia at a few other places on other nights, so it was a pleasant surprise to have some entertainment with our cocktails. Every place does their trivia a little different, and we really enjoyed their format. JC was our bartender, and he was very friendly and attentive. A great spot to socialize! I came here with some friends while waiting to be off the waitlist for our dinner reservations nearby. This pub is spacious with outdoor seating, which has lights and covers at the top in case in rains! As well as several couches, booths, and bar seating inside. We got seated right away at 7pm on a weekday, and everyone was watching the game on the tv. Service was quick, too! Nachos: 5/10, pretty standard, hard guac, cheese, and salsa, but not something I would get again. Mainly got it to hold us off until dinner Green Tea + Whiskey shot: 7/10! Very good, tastes exactly like green tea and you can't tell there's alcohol in it. Seems dangerous if you keep getting it! A great try. There also seems to be a VIP speakeasy near the bathrooms! Every day I cry about how much I miss Dublin, its pubs, and its people. Finally, I've found my Guinness-serving third space. Not quite the walkable pub with good city views I had hoped for, but the vibes, the food, and the people more than make up for it. I've been coming here for the last six months, and I have yet to be disappointed in the slightest. The food here is SO good. Like crazy good. Their wagyu burger is to die for. Short rib is delicious. Bread pudding makes me roll me eyes back into my skull. I've tried many of their menu items; every single one slaps. They rotate menu items too, which tells me the chefs are always hard at work experimenting with different unique dishes. The most important thing is, they pour a decent pint of Guinness. The most most important thing is, the people here are awesome. Much love to Bernie; he's awesome. They have things scheduled every day of the week. It's in a really nice little area with other restaurants and shops, so it already feels like a great night-out destination--and once you're inside, the vibe just gets better. We stumbled upon Macallans due to other places being packed on a Friday night. But we were super glad that we did. The noise level can get a bit loud since they turn on all genres of music throughout the night. However, it's cozy and beautiful inside. It gives bar vibes combined with higher-scale restaurant feel. Service? Top notch! No complaints, as they were super attentive and accommodating. We ordered the Mussels and the Lobster Ravioli. Both dishes were really good. They gave you a hefty amount of mussels, which were steamed with chorizo and a garlic type of base. They also paired it with two large pieces of toasted bread. The mussels were a decent size and the chorizo was great. However, the base was a bit salty (which made sense for the pieces of bread). The lobster ravioli was good too. We particularly liked the sauce. The amount of ravioli they gave wasn't much, but for the price, I'm not complaining. They also have great selection of beers/drinks, so always keep that in mind. Parking is not too bad. The have parking garages in different parts of Downtown Brea, so you'll always find somewhere to park, although it can get pretty full during the weekends. Seen this place in passing and finally decided to pull the trigger for brunch. Not too many people when we came in but the bartender and waiters definitely made this place have a nice, intimate vibe. We were quickly seated and our waiter gave us drink recommendations and told us to not pass on their Brussel sprouts so we ordered and got our food and drinks within 20 minutes. Though the viking drink was a little too flowery tasting in my opinion, their old fashioned hit the spot! The Grilled cheese was nice and melty and the short rib was super tender. I ordered the Animal Style Poutine potato wedges. I know I know not healthy but my husband and I wanted to try it so badly and so glad we did it had potato wedges with corned beef, grilled onions, mac sauce, pickles, cheese and a perfect egg. Amazing seriously so delicious, I have never tried poutine fries before so I have nothing to compare it too but the couple behind us also ordered it and they liked it so much too lol. My husband ordered the grilled cheese sandwich with short rib. Wow the meat and the Texas toast they put it on just perfectly crispy on the crust, buttery middle and melted cheese with soft and tender short ribs wow, that came with a cup of creamy tomato soup I did not try that though lol our friend he ordered the nachos with chicken, his son the chicken tenders and wedges but I couldn't get a photo of it. Then another friend showed up he also ordered those delicious Poutine Wedge fries. We had a great time talking and eating our delicious food, she brought out their refills for their drinks fast forgot my soda but then remember so awesome thank you. It's known for their variety of some amazing drinks. So many to choose from. Last night, I came here for food and drink, along with watching the Dodgers game. Here's what I ordered while watching the game. Drink: French Martini (Vodka, black raspberry, pineapple, lemon, and cane). Very refreshing drink to have after a stressful day at work. Concept of this drink is spot on. Tasty drink I'll order everytime. Food: Chicken Sandwich (topped with drummy) with fries. As soon it came to me... that's probably the biggest chicken sandwich I've ever seen, especially with that drummy on top. Even without a side, it's more than enough to eat. Tastes really good. Not too bad. Next time I order that, I'll make sure not to get side. It was alot for me. Service: The bartender and some other guys are great. And a added bonus, they're all Dodgers fan. Definitely regret ordering the Shepherd's Pie, I took a bite and got a mouthful of peas and decided to pick them out and realized I had picked out a huge pile of peas from just a quarter of the dish. It's like I ordered a pea pie and the peas were all sorts of different shades of green that it was hard to see them all like 50 shades of green! Also ordered the Fantastic Four, onion rings and pretzels are definitely delicious, hard pass on the oil drenched little piggies, and never got any seasoned nuts! We came for the Great band on Wednesdays Art of Sax. Unfortunately we have been here many times and this is the worst experience we have ever had. I made reservations and when we arrived we were standing at the entrance waiting to be acknowledged. Not one employee said hello during that time although they did look our way. My son always orders the bone in rib eye and it was always wonderful in the past three times he has had it. This time the steak was over cooked. It was tough and lacked flavor and the sides were cold. When we told the older waiter ( don't know his name but he is older) he said he would take it back. He then came out and said the kitchen manager said it's the same cut if meat and it was not going to get more tender. So in the last several times when it was wonderful and now that it's over cooked it's not going to be a better if they cook it correctly? I tasted it and it was exactly what I described. So 2 people don't know what they are talking about but the person who didn't try it informed us it wasn't going to be better. Wow!!!! This is the last time we are coming here. So sad it has gone down hill. Eating out is supposed to be a pleasure and if a steak is $90.00 it should be good every time as well as the sides not being cold. Had not been here in a while but came back last Monday. The service was slow and the food mediocre at best. I ended up returning my entrée. Our server although very nice was clearly overwhelmed and looked too young to even work there. The 2nd server whom I asked twice for help. Did it but with a horrible attitude like it wasn't his job. What happened to this place? And what's up with the dirty old man at the bar feeling up his mail order bride in front of us. While waiting for our dinner reservations at a nearby restaurant, we decided to pop in here and grab a drink. During Christmas time, they went all out and festively decorated the entire bar. On the day that we went, it was karaoke night, so it was really fun to see and hear people come up and sing! I got the Tokyo tea shot and a collin's drink. Both were very delicious, and was a great appetizer to our meal later on. It is a bit loud in there, so you'll have to scream over each other a lot. There's also an outdoor patio area where you can sit, that's a bit quieter to have conversation. There's a lot of seating in here, which is great for casual hangouts, and less of a dancing bar kind of vibe. Parking is free in the structures right next to the bar. Our party of 6 were seated right away, and was attentively helped by our server throughout our time there. I got caught taking the photo of "G" the Raider fan Bartender...so I showed it to him when he asked, and it was to prove his refusal to serve us at the other end of the bar and his favoritism to others that were quite clearly his friends. He got so pissed and began reaming us. He got another guy into it and soon we were being verbally assaulted. Then I began to cry from the experience and covering my face as they began laughing at me, calling names and saying OH GREAT NOW SHES CRYING! FG BABY! GET OUT! They knew he was autistic and they used it against him. They demanded his credit card when we were there on a Groupon. They told us to leave and pay nothing! We are now in a dispute with them through our Financial Institution. Groupon refunded back the voucher as they could hear much of what was going on as I had gotten them on the phone. Absolutely the most horrific experience ever. The guy was entirely preoccupied on his phone, laptop and friends. We weren't the only ones trying to get his attention. He finally snapped at us on the other side that he was really busy starting his own business and needed to give it his time too. He bought us a shot for my Son's Birthday earlier upon arrival. That was the beginning and end of his kindness. My food was so cold and not delicious. I wouldn't recommend the Chiliquiles. 40 years in Property Management, teaching all things Customer Service and having Kingsley Award Winning Prominence, didn't prepare me for this berating. They shouted "Good luck talking to Ben the Manager"...laughing. I never wrote as I was ill to my stomach. My heart was racing and being I have acute C-PTSD I just couldn't deal with more of the same. There is discrimination and bullying here when your not happy and say so. It's not welcomed no matter how gently you try to explain. Be careful here. Very careful. Take a look at those who give but 1 or 2 star ratings to see what their experiences were. It's cringe worthy. The restaurant itself is really appealing. As an Irish family this would've been a regular place for us. Better we learned what lies underneath earlier than later. read more
