    Al Pastor Vegan Tacos
    Yvette S.

I went to Phlight with a friend because we wanted to grab a drink and snack on a few different things so we figured tapas would be perfect. We walked in on a Friday night and didn't wait too long. Server came to our table right away. I ordered a red sangria and my friend had a beer. I was a little disappointed in the sangria. I loved that they had fruit in there but it tasted just okay. It felt like they used a sparkling wine because it had a bit of a fizz to it. I don't recommend it. The food, however, was excellent. Hear me out, please try the vegan al pastor tacos. They make them with mushrooms but it is one of the best tacos I've ever had, and it has no meat. My friend was also skeptical, but she couldn't believe how amazing they tasted. We also ordered some bread, brussel sprouts, patatas, and bacon wrapped dates. All the food was absolutely delicious, but if I had to recommend two dishes from our visit, it would have to be the Al pastor tacos and the bacon wrapped dates. They are both INSANE. Phlight is a standout spot for me in downtown Whittier. Add it to your next date night.

Have been to Phlight a handful of times now and it is always a great experience. The staff is amazing, the food is delicious and environment feels like an elevated sense of home. You can tell they've built a community around the food they serve and take pride in their ability to do so. Can't wait to dine with them again!

Brown Sugar & Ginger Short Ribs $39.00

This place is so overpriced! The flavor is there however the potions are not shareable as posted on the menu. Ordered the short ribs, hence the plurality. It was one bone with about an ounce of beef layer on top for $39.00. The salmon was a little better on the portion size but still not worth $22.00. Broccolini was good and I can deal with the $12.00 charge. Our waitress had no personality whatsoever. It was almost like we were bothering her. With all the staff people they had I would have assumed that we would've received our food altogether however they were all standing around chatting with each other. Amazingly with the prices and the portions not equal, they were pretty packed, so not sure if this was everyone's first time coming here, but I will say we will not be returning.

We stumbled across Phlight during a softball tournament, and we are so happy we did. My boyfriend and I were talking about returning because this place exceeded our expectations. We walked in around 5 pm on a Saturday and we were seated right away. I ordered a red sangria, which I loved. Started with the pork Belly and lengua tacos. The tacos were amazing, and full of flavor. I love mushrooms, so I had to order the sautéed mushrooms and they were excellent. I also ordered the grilled octopus which was okay, but I can pass on this. My son had the French toast, which I got a bite and it was really good. Service was great, our waiter checked on us frequently. Parking was a breeze, there's a garage right across the street.

Nice place to hang. Burger is solid. Gourmet flavor. Skeptical about the bacon wrapped dates but they were delicious.

The food here is really good and the service is nice. The inside is very well decorated and I was happy to go there. I will say that the bone marrow has very little meat so make sure you order something else.

I love this place. The ambience is hard to describe: hip, rustic, eclectic, comfortable...the perfect place to meet a friend and chat. The staff are casual yet friendly and attentive; excellent service. There is a long bar with a lot of interior seating and a few outdoor tables too. They serve tapas here along with beer or wine. We ordered two glasses of wine, a syrah and a Spanish tempranillo . Both were excellent and we kept tasting each others' to the point where it can be said we shared both glasses. It's sort of like sharing a bottle of soda as a kid with your best friend and not wiping the top as you pass it back and forth. We ordered four plates: patatas, albondigas, croquetas, and a lengua soft taco. My friend quickly wolfed down the taco so I can't comment on that but the other three dishes got my love. The croquetas were my favorite. Balls covered in crunchy panko and filled with spinach and manchego cheese with a piquillo pepper sauce for dipping made me cry tears of joy. The albondigas were not served as a soup but were meatballs on small slices of grilled bread covered in a white dijon sauce, capers, manchego cheese, and chili flakes. My friend called them amazeballs and I agreed that they were incredible but gave a good tongue lashing for use of that word. The patatas were chunks of seasoned crispy potatoes with sides of garlic aioli and bravas sauce for dipping. Simple but heavenly thanks to the bravas sauce (no offense, aioli, we still love you too). There are so many other dishes to choose from and I can't wait to come back again and again and try others. But do I do that or keep getting the things I love?

    Sweet Potato Fries

We all ordered the delicious hamburger. We got sweet potatoes fries and regular fries. The Malbec wine was delicious. We also got the dates stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon. We got seated for a party of 5 without reservations. The place was packed. The service was good. Nicely decorated for Christmas.

3.5/5 Other than the great reviews online, I also had some friends suggest we (partner and friend) try this spot since we were in the area for the week. Arrived on a Friday evening around 630, the place was very busy, only available seating was outside, we agreed, the weather was nice and didn't want to wait 30-45mins Food came out in this order- Sweet potato fries - 5/5 came out hot, aioli tasty Bacon wrapped dates - 3/5 Manchego / tamarind sauce; paired well with the Manchego but tamarind sauce was lost in all the saltiness of the bacon and sweetness of the date. Brussel sprouts - 3/5 lemon / cumin/ garlic aioli; cumin definitely stood out; aioli tasted the same as the sweet potato fries - no garlic, a bit too oily for me Croquetas - 3/5 after eating the dates and Brussel sprouts the croquetas had no flavor and was very bland Skirt steak - 4/5 Idiazabal cheese sauce/ chimichurri - Idiazabal was very light which lacked flavor especially when pairing the dish w chimichurri that has tons of herbs. Overall, the service was good but we were outside (Curb) it got a bit cold and unfortunately, they didn't have heat lamps, the first dish took 5-10 mins to come out (sweet potato fries) then it took them an additional 15-20mins for the rest to start rollin, by then the fries we cold, an additional 20 mins go by and we had to remind our waiter about the skirt steak. I personally don't think like that they give themselves 10-20 min gap to bring out the food... Although I really enjoyed the company that evening, I wasn't too fond of this place...

Yes, children are welcomed. It's a great atmosphere where you will see a little of everything. The only thing to consider are the food options for kids.

Just wine and beer, they do sangria with the wine too

On the other hand, they serve up a heaping plate of inconsistency. Three different items from their already small menu weren't available. No Al Pastor? Multiple beers tapped out? And this was early in the evening, not closing time. It made me wonder: supply chain problem, or did they just forget to go shopping? With only one server and one cook on duty, the whole place had a vibe of "we're trying, but please don't look too closely." Service was friendly, but the overall atmosphere felt a little uncomfortable, like something was just... off. As for the food: the Pumba tacos were excellent, the Gobernator shrimp taco was also good, and then there was the "side salad." Calling it a salad feels generous. It looked like someone raided the burger garnish tray and charged me $8 for it. Full iceberg leaves, a few tomato slices, a browning avocado, and purple onion just sat there staring at me, daring me to fight it. It was such a disaster I almost had to set up a GoFundMe page for it. The space itself is modern and vibrant, and the menu ideas are creative -- if only you can actually order them. Unfortunately, the potential doesn't outweigh the frustration. We won't be back.

For most of the night, I had a great time minding my own business, watching videos quietly on my phone in a corner of the bar. As I was getting ready to leave, a random guy sitting nearby asked me to lower the volume on my phone. Whether he intended to be polite or not, it felt condescending, territorial, and completely unnecessary. They were speaking louder than my phone, yet somehow my phone was the issue. It honestly felt like a case of "local syndrome," where someone felt empowered to tell me what to do in a place that isn't theirs. I didn't want to create a scene, so I generously tipped the bartender and left. But I was genuinely upset that I was told to be quiet while I was simply minding my own business in a corner. The place itself does not deserve a bad review because of the actions of one customer. However, if this person is in any way connected to management or staff, I would seriously reconsider my rating and change it to one star--something I never done before. I think a little more compassion and understanding toward fellow customers would go a long way.

Hey Brian, I wanted…read moreto reach out about something that happened tonight that I feel you should know about. I also want to be clear that all of this transpired after you had already left for the evening. For context, I'm a regular at the bar and have been coming in for quite a while. I've never had a major issue with Brent or Steven, even though they both have personalities that can come across as sarcastic or abrasive. I've generally let it go because my reason for coming to the bar is simple: I come in to have a few beers, relax, and enjoy myself. Tonight, while I was still drinking one of my beers and had some left in the glass, Brent came by and took it away as if I was finished. I jokingly said something along the lines of, "I guess you're not going to let me finish the last bit." I wasn't upset and wasn't trying to start an argument. It was an obvious mistake that could have been solved with a simple apology. Instead, he responded with a snarky comment rather than acknowledging the mistake. Later, he brought another beer to my table. I made eye contact with him and before I could even say anything, he asked, "Do you want to say something to me?" I replied, "No, I just wanted to say thank you." His response was, "Your eyes are telling me differently." Again, I found that unnecessarily confrontational and disrespectful. At that point, I decided to leave a $0 tip. I normally tip very well, often around 30% or more, and this was the first time I've intentionally left no tip because I wanted to send a message that I was unhappy with the way I was being treated. After that, Steven came over and confronted me about leaving no tip. He asked if I was really zeroing it out and questioned me about whether something had happened between me and Brent. I told him that whatever issue I had was not his concern, and he responded, "Fair enough." I assumed that would be the end of it. Instead, Brent came outside and confronted me. He told me Steven had said I had a problem with him. I explained that I didn't have a personal problem with him; my issue was his attitude and the way he was treating me as a customer. Rather than listening, he became increasingly hostile. I reminded him that I'm a customer and that I'm only there to buy beer from the business. I'm not there to deal with sarcasm, attitude, or an employee's emotions. As a paying customer, the minimum I expect is basic respect. I shouldn't have to walk on eggshells or accept being spoken to disrespectfully while simply trying to enjoy a beer. That confrontation ended poorly and he went back inside. A short time later, he came back out and confronted me again, this time in front of other customers. The situation became even more uncomfortable because it was happening publicly. During that exchange, he ultimately told me that I was not welcome back. Again, I reminded him that I am a paying customer whose only purpose in being there is to support the business and enjoy a beer. I should not be getting into arguments with employees, being confronted in front of other patrons, or being told I'm not welcome because I expressed concerns about how I was being treated. The bigger issue is that, in my opinion, this isn't just about tonight. This has been months in the making. I've noticed a pattern with both Brent and Steven where they seem to have become comfortable treating customers with attitude and sarcasm in ways that shouldn't be acceptable in a customer-facing role. I've overlooked it many times because I enjoy the bar and didn't think it was worth making an issue out of. On the other hand, employees like Kim, Josh, and David have always treated me and other customers with professionalism and respect. They know how to joke around while still making customers feel welcome. I've never had an issue with them. From my perspective, the problem is specifically Brent and, to a lesser extent, Steven. Brent especially has developed a demeanor that I find unwelcoming, confrontational, and disrespectful toward customers. I don't think I'm the only person who feels this way. Tonight was simply the point where it crossed a line. I'm not sending this because I want anyone fired or punished. I simply think you should know what happened, especially since it all occurred after you had left. I've spent a lot of time and money at your establishment over the years, and I would hope that customers--especially regulars--can expect basic courtesy and respect from the people serving them. I wanted to give you my side of the story directly. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
