I had high hopes for The Millhouse in The Joinery Hotel. The restaurant had a cute atmosphere, and it is tucked away in a cute, little boutique hotel. My friends and I visited during Restaurant Week, and the menu looked really great. Boy, was I wrong. The bartenders were also the waiters so service was VERY slow. They had trouble seating my group of 3, and they even sat us right next to the supply cart and refused to seat us downstairs where there was plenty of seating. We ordered drinks, and many of our orders were wrong. I, fortunately, really enjoyed my passion fruit cocktail. We proceeded to order off the Restaurant Week menu. Our appetizers came out, and we all really loved the smoked clam chowder. After that, service went completely downhill. Our waiter was not attentive at all. At one point, he completely forgot about our entrées, and we waited about an hour for our waiter to even realize. I ordered the cacio e pepe ravioli, and they were not great. My friend thought her pot roast was OK, and my other friend really loved the fried chicken. Once again, when it was time for dessert, we waited another 30 to 45 minutes to order and get our dessert. They had forgotten about us again. By that time, it was the end of the night and all the desserts were gone so we couldn't even get what we wanted, which was chocolate creme brulee. They allowed us to order whatever dessert we wanted. I got the lemon bar and my friends got the tiramisu. The lemon bar was so ridiculously tart that you couldn't even eat it. My friends liked their Tiramisu but it was nothing special. In the end, the service was absolutely atrocious, and I will not be back. They did comp us our meals and we paid for our drinks, but I wasted a good 3 hours of my life at this restaurant. The restaurant wasn't even busy, so there truly was no excuse for the poor service. They definitely did not seem prepared for Restaurant Week. read more

We stayed here and heard mixed reviews about the breakfast, but thought we would give it a try. First of all, it was absolutely freezing in the downstairs restaurant area. Service was adequate once it actually started. Everything seemed very expensive, especially the six dollar cup of coffee. The chicken and waffles were very generic, small chicken tenders and waffles. The hot honey was, as advertised, very hot. Could have used some syrup on the side. The bacon was very, very, very hard and slightly curled up like it had been cooked in the oven the day before and reheated. We're in Pittsburgh for the Steelers game and staying at The Joinery Hotel. We decided to have breakfast at their restaurant, The Mill House, and it did not disappoint. The moment you walk in, the place smells like smoked wood--so cozy, with a wonderful, inviting ambiance. From the looks of it, the morning was busy with just one server and the chef running the show. As it got busier, the chef was the one who brought us the menu, while the server remained incredibly attentive--smiling, friendly, and present with every table. You would never have known she was the only server working; she never missed a beat. As the crowd grew, the chef stepped out from the kitchen to run food, clear plates, and bus tables. And now, let me tell you about the breakfast--because eggs should never be taken for granted. The eggs were perfectly cooked over medium, with crispy edges just the way I like them. The bacon was spot on, and the cubed potatoes... oh my goodness. Perfectly seasoned, golden brown and crunchy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. For "just breakfast," it was honestly perfect. The teamwork between the server and the chef was amazing--you could tell they genuinely enjoy what they do. The server was extremely gracious, kind, and helpful. This was hands down one of the best breakfast experiences I've had in a long time--good enough that I felt compelled to write about it. read more

Hotel restaurant where we were staying ( the Joinery). Two different experiences, one day apart. First breakfast our server was a bit scattered, had to retake our order. Served coffee in a styrofoam cup and water in plastic cups. These were not to go. Tastes crappy in styrofoam and plastic... I ordered the Millhouse omelet with chicken sausage instead of bacon. Lots of mushrooms, sausage and tomatoes and delicious. Home fries well seasoned and yummy. My husband got the chicken and waffles which were supposed to have a kick in them, but they were sweet and even a request for additional honey brought no changes... so hot sauce was added ( sarachi).. Yesterday, different server, drinks in glass/ ceramic, attentive and friendly. Both ordered the millhouse omelet , but less contents than the day before and not as good. Potatoes were highly salty and not seasoned otherwise. A skillet with improved ones were brought to the table after we asked for a new order ( they were the sides to this dish). Should be a 4 star review, but giving them a 3 due to inconsistency. Obviously a different cook? Regardless, maybe management will take notice and correct. read more

We were staying at the hotel and tried The Millhouse. The service was excellent. The cocktails were amazing. Three of us had dinner and the food was really good. I had the filet steak and it was the best filet I had in awhile. The atmosphere was great and clean. We were on the second floor and basically could look down to the kitchen and watch the chef prepare our dinners. It was really a great experience and would recommend. read more

We stayed at The Joinery Hotel for our wedding. After our wedding we wanted to go out so we stopped at the bar before heading out. The bar was stacked full of dirty dishes there wasn't anywhere to sit. It took a moment for the bartender to clear a few spots as she was preoccupied with staff that were off duty. She seemed to be under the influence. We finally ordered our drinks and then it took forever for us to get the bill As we were trying to get someones attention to pay the bill she dropped a tub full of dishes and had on of the off duty staff grab a broom. This off duty staff member was definitely over served as he could not keep his balance. The next day we had a brunch that was scheduled and communicated with the restaurant. We arrived at the scheduled time and were told to sit anywhere. We found the table with our preselected menus on it and took a seat. There appeared to only have 1 waiter working and he was working. Running around to tables trying his best to keep up. He finally made it over to us to get drink orders and we also ordered our food. As we were ordering food he had a look of horror as he thought we were not the group that was supposed to be sitting there. We told him we were and there was a look of relief. It took forever to get our sodas. We order 3 appetizers and 6 meals. An app came out then 2 peoples meals came out. There was a long wait then another app came out. Another long wait then the last app came out. I feel like you see where this is going. It took like an hour and a half to get our food. Thats completely unacceptable as they knew we were going to be there and what we would be ordering. My dad spoke up as it was completely ridiculous and they comped our sodas. Came in for restaurant week. Great menu, excellent food options, appropriate portions and awesome flavors. While many here have complained about the service we sat at the bar and had no concerns. If you've not been here, you need to put this one on your list! A little off the beaten path, but maybe that's a good thing since you won't have to fight to get a table. read more

Usually I only write glowing reviews, but I have to be honest. This was one of the worst experiences our family has had in a really long time. We had a party of 7 on Saturday night at 5:30pm. We ordered drinks and a few appetizers. The brussel sprouts came in a cereal bowl, with no serving utensil and was very hard to get the food out without spilling it all over the place. We also weren't given any small plates to eat off of. When I asked the server, he came back with saucer plates with the grooves to hold coffee cups. Service was overall slow and it seemed like he wasn't paying attention to us. It wasn't busy, there was one other table. Second round of drinks were wrong, but it took too long to wait to ask for a redo that some of us just drank what we didn't order. The risotto with the salmon was INEDIBLE. We all tried a little, it tasted like chemicals and had to spit it out. One of us got a salad with salmon on it. The piece of salmon had at least 3 bones in it. My entree wedge salad was a side salad size with 3 tiny pieces of chicken for $28. We are typically a "go with the flow" family, but after receiving the bill, we were astonished at the price. The bill came to over $500. We are not cheap and normally don't complain, but someone has got to speak up. Nothing was comped, no manager came over to apologize for the litany of things wrong. It truly was such terrible food and WAYYY over priced!! Unfortunately, we just had to pay the full bill, be polite and reluctantly leave a 22% tip. We would have been better off at Eat N Park and saved hundreds of dollars. What a shame! read more

Awful experience-do NOT eat here! I called the restaurant looking to make a reservation and was told there would be a party of 20 coming in at the time I requested. It was suggested that I come later. Our plans changed and since we were staying at the hotel I decided to go earlier than the supposed party of 20 was to arrive. (I planned to stay at the bar and wait if I was unable to get a table.) Upon arrival, I noticed that the restaurant was practically empty so I approached the bar and asked for the hostess. Since the restaurant was nearly empty, I asked if my son and I could sit at a table and have dinner. I was told to sit at one of the tables that was not marked as reserved. My son and I sat for over 20 minutes within view of the bar where both employees working could see us. Since neither came to the table, I thought that maybe I had misunderstood and was expected to order from the bar. I walked over to the bar and very politely asked if I should place my order there. The woman working rudely told me that she would be right over. A bit later our drink and food orders were taken by a very nice young man named Jordan. Over an hour passed and no food was delivered to the table. The same female employee finally came to the table and shared that it was because I had ordered the half chicken and it takes at least 20 minutes to cook. That made no sense to me as to why the food took far longer than that. There were only a couple other tables in the restaurant at this point. The food arrived and was awful. As we were eating, another couple sat down beside us (at one of the many tables marked as reserved but never filled) and commented on how rude the female employee was to them. Tried to go here for dinner and the waitress was extremely rude and then ignored us. We left and had dinner somewhere else. Came back for a nightcap as we were staying in the hotel and were ignored by the bar tender. The waitress must have been off for the night and drinking at the bar. Finally got served. Definitely not a friendly place and I would not recommend it at all. read more
