Greasy deliciousness. A staple along the Strand, The Kettle offers a wide variety of food items with reasonable prices, given the area. This place is busy all day with Manhattan Beach visitors and locals, and all night with partygoers. They offer all the foods your cardiologist told you not to eat (with some healthier options), but... you parked far away, you're walking the Strand after your meal, and you'll be hoofing it up and down the hill from the beach, so you can cheat on your diet a little bit, right? The fried pickles were the best I'd ever had. Big, diagonal slices, with the crunchiest and crispiest batter. I couldn't even get a photo before people put their paws all over them. I had the pot roast patty melt and it was packed with tender meat. The bread had garlic/butter/cheese grilled into its outer faces and the au jus was incredible (and salty). I had the soup of the day (cream of chicken) and was nice but severely undersalted, which I found ironic. I looked at neighboring diner's plates (for research purposes!) and I wanted to eat it all -- the Kettle truly delivers. Lastly, the muffins are great. DELICIOUS DINER, A STAPLE IN MB! This amazing place is a staple in Manhattan Beach and it's open super late. It's so yummy but unassuming. Manhattan Beach is fun but has gotten very fancy recently. This place is casual and has a diverse menu. So my friends and I used to go here after partying in the area since it's open 24 hours on Friday and Saturday. When the kids were little we used to come here for breakfast (which is served all day!). Today we came here for dinner. My sons are obsessed with steak so they ordered that. I was super suspect of steak at a dinner but it was delicious and came with soup (they got chicken tortilla) or salad, spinach. and garlic bread (or you can get a muffin). But it also came with the MOST DECADENT MASHED POTATOES. They were loaded with sour cream, cheese, green onions, and copious amounts of bacon. I ordered the green goddess burger with beef. It was so great with perfectly cooked beef, half an avocado, and the most buttery brioche bun. I got a side salad instead of fries but the fries are good too. We came on a Wednesday evening and immediately got seated. Service was pretty quick. We ordered the El Porto Burger which was their Wednesday special. I've ate here handfuls of times but this last time was a bit disappointing. The wait wasn't long so that was good and we were greeted pretty quickly after being seated. We ordered some beers and those came out in a timely manner but our food took close to an hour to come out. We ordered two burgers and a kids mickey mouse pancake meal. We both ordered our burgers medium , my husband's burger was completely pink and cold inside so definitely not cooked properly. Thankfully my burger was cooked correctly but it was unpleasant to wait so long for a burger to be cold and raw in the middle with a different texture. I love the fried zucchini and ranch here. I usually make it my meal. I was with some friends and we ordered it as a starter. So yummy! I ordered soup and salad. The broccoli cheese soup was too thick, I just wonder if I was getting the end of the pot. I ordered a Cesar salad with ranch and the lettuce tasted a bit bitter. Not my favorite experience here. It's impressive to find a diner that's open 24 hours over the weekend in the MB area after a night of bar hopping. It was the perfect way to end the night with some comforting food. There wasn't a wait and plenty of comfortable seating. The waitress took our orders and we got our food out pretty quickly. I ordered the kettle burger which included homemade french onion soup. It felt like high quality food and had a lot of nice flavors. The burger was juicy and wasn't too salty. The french onion soup was delicious and cheesy. Our waitress even threw in extra pickles for a friend who was from out of town and said he rarely gets pickles from where he's from. It's a great place to hang out before or after your meal, especially since the whole area is super pedestrian-friendly--even if parking can be a bit tricky. Many nearby street spots are metered, with limits ranging from 24 minutes to 2 hours, currently at $2.50 per hour. There's also a parking structure nearby, but it's on the pricier side, so plan accordingly. As for the diner itself: food was solid, exactly what you'd expect from a classic American diner. Great spot for a late night bite! I've always passed this place when ever I'm down in Manhattan Beach but never took the chance to go in. I'm happy I got to experience it this time. We weren't super hungry so everything we ordered was for the table which included a chicken club sandwich, onion rings, and 2 orders of their chicken tenders (because they were that good (very crispy)!). We also had their blackberry lemonade to drink. It was a fun time, the ambiance feels more rustic and woodsy rather than 1950s for a diner which is something you don't see too often in SoCal The service was friendly and quick. Today, I had a really bad experience at the diner. When I sat down at the table, I asked the busboy to fill up the tiny coffee cup they offer for free. At the end of the meal, the waitress charged me the full price for a cup of coffee without ever telling me I would be getting this charge. She never checks on the table or says anything when she drops the bill I have been going there for more than 30 years, and this waitress is always unhappy, not nice, and rude. It makes me think it is personal against me, though I hope I am mistaken. I asked her to please remove the coffee from my bill. She was very rude, trying to explain why she was charging me. I told her there was no need to explain, to just remove it, and that I would never ask for a refill of that tiny little coffee cup again. She insisted on explaining. Finally, I said there was no need to explain and that I just hoped the busboy would not get in trouble. Later, I asked for the manager, and that went badly as well. He was very defensive of her and basically walked away from me. I was trying to avoid getting the busboy in trouble and to let management know this waitress has been very rude to me and my wife. This happened today, so I am not sure if this is something the restaurant cares to know, but the manager and the waitress are not professional and need help to be more professional. When I was leaving I overheard the manager just told someone else, "This is the person complaining." Do I stop going to this restaurant? Am I going to be asked to leave? The waitress owes me, and I am trying not to use names here, so I hope someone from the restaurant allows me to explain since neither the waitress nor the manager cared. So I actually haven't been here in quite some years but this place has been here for a very long time. It's great to have one of those places that are not a chain and still family owned from what I know. This also is one of those places where the menu has so much to choose from. I came in on a Sunday evening and was sat fairly quickly. There was only one waitress on the floor but she handle it very well. Very friendly service and everything was good. Tonight we were in town for the fireworks and I got something new, ie. the French onion burger. Cooked rare and it came with a side of 4 onion rings, a side of the f. Onion soup to dip ski, and it was very good! I asked for the bread to be Parmesan and that bread is the bomb. Wow! I want that cheesy bread every day!!! Next time I might ask for it to be less butter/oily but all in all, a solid AF burger. Next time I'll try the French quarter burger and those delightful thick cut fries. My girlfriend invited me for a walk along the beach and lunch. She particularly chose to eat at The Kettle because their honey bran muffin is delicious. She doesn't know if The Kettle and Mimi's Cafe are related, but said the menu is very similar. We were sat immediately at a booth and our server was very patient and friendly. I ordered the french onion soup and the Chinese chicken salad. The salad was underdressed. The chicken was dry. The soup, however, was really good. Apparently this is a 24 hours restaurant.
