I have a love-and-hate relationship with Uncle Bill's. The food is generously portioned and tastes great, so there's definitely a lot to love. I had the Corned Beef Hash Breakfast Combo, which came with blueberry pancakes. The pancakes were so good, especially with those sweet blueberries! My husband ordered the Potatoes del Riego, and honestly, that was the BEST thing we ate that morning! It's definitely a little heavy, but SO delicious. It's basically hash browns sautéed with crumbled bacon, bell peppers, and onions, then topped with avocado and melted cheese. I can already see myself coming back just for the Potatoes del Riego and the blueberry pancakes next time! Now for the "hate" part... I would recommend coming when the weather is a little cooler if you're planning to sit outside. It was just SO HOT when we visited, and we were constantly being swarmed by flies. We were literally sweating while trying to eat, so it definitely took away from the experience. To be fair, we did visited over a weekend when LA was experiencing a crazy heatwave along with the humidity, so hopefully this isn't normally an issue. Overall if you're in the area this place is decent giving the nice diner feel. The service was great and portions are definitely worth the price. The wait on a Sunday morning at 915 was about 20 minutes as many parties don't stay for the wait it seems. We had the ice coffee and OJ to start which was pretty good and refill on the ice coffee included. For the food we got the 2 eggs with chicken sausage, poached eggs and 2 pancakes and the Istanbul omelet. The omelet has deli meat but overall decent portion. We both liked the hash browns. The pancake takes is average. Poached eggs we're perfectly done and chicken sausage link tasted good Overall if you're looking for a diner type meal by the beach this is a decent choice and you can find parking. Agree with some other posts that if there is a heat wave or you are sensitive to the sun they don't have full patio coverage but a number of umbrellas and option of indoor seating. Just be KIND to people and ask them for what you need. Parking can be tough since it's mostly street parking and a few quick-to-fill lots, plus as a beloved local gem, there's often a wait. Pro tip: if you don't mind counter seating, ask if any spots are open there are usually a couple of chairs available. The food is way beyond just "good" it's incredible. The eggs are easily the best I've had at any breakfast spot, and the hash browns (cooked in coconut oil) are just as amazing. The chicken apple sausage hits the perfect balance of flavors, the corned beef hash is a total breakfast staple, and the chocolate chip pancakes aren't overly sweet. You can even swap in a flavored pancake as a side with most breakfast entrees. Came here with some family and once again had a golden experience. This place does incredible volume given it's rather limited space. If you're lucky enough you be sat at one of the few boots inside, allow your eyeballs to scroll the walls for all kinds of nostalgic pictures. You may come across an image that shows where today's Uncle Bill's pancake house used to be over a century ago! I went with bacon, egg's, and those incredible pancakes, while my guest ordered a litany of other things such as an old school burger with onion rings-there were no complaints people! And while $60 plus (not including my standard 20 PLUS percent tip for CSA level service) may come off as a tad pricey, think again especially in this day and age. They're going to be almost every other competitor in both the South Bay and SoCal as a whole when you consider the sheer volume of the food they're going to put in front of you. Kind of makes you look around at the fit servers and say hey do you eat this food too? Lol The CSA, (CUSTOMER SERVICE ALL STAR) of this experience was Miss Nicky-pictured. Yes, this is a local favorite. Yes people come her from the West side as it is one of their favorites. Yes it is a tourist favorite. With that said, be prepared for a bit of a wait for a table, and know they have excellent service and the food is worth the wait. There is a public parking lot at the civic center for a fee of course. Street parking is hard to manage sometimes, but the civic center has an underground parking area nearby, which is a short walk. The view of the ocean is beautiful and peaceful while you are waiting for your table. We ordered the bacon and eggs (scrambled) with potatoes and the Sausage patties and eggs (fried) with potatoes. Both come with a choice of pancakes or muffins. One of us ordered the hot cakes and the other ordered the muffins. On this day the muffin was Cappuccino Chocolate muffins and they were to die for! We sat inside which is very nice, and there is plenty of outdoor seating as well. As I said, Uncle Bills is a fan favorite. It took almost 20 minutes just for someone to take our order, even though there was no wait to get seated and the place didn't seem that busy--we waited about 10-15 minutes before being seated. Once we finally ordered though, the food actually came out pretty fast. The food itself was really good, especially the burgers we got--they were definitely the highlight of the meal. This cute place definitely gives good bang for your buck in terms of portion sizes. I ordered the Expo 73 Omelet ($19.50) and upgraded to the Banana nut pancakes ($3 upcharge). I came here with a large group and thankfully only had about a 5 minute wait. We were sat inside and service was prompt. Prices are pretty reasonable and they even had specials for the week that was hanging from the wall. I ordered the French toast combo with scrambled eggs and sausage. We missed the crowds on both ends once we parked and promptly scored a fantastic table on the patio with a sliver of an ocean view. Service was friendly and attentive. The pancakes at another table were GINORMOUS. Given the name of this place, I probably should have ordered them, but my pal wasn't interested. Instead, I opted for the Sausage and Eggs for $17.00, which came with two muffins, blueberry or chocolate chip. I ate the blueberry one, which was delicious and took home the chocolate chip one to enjoy the next day. Everything is big here! My meal consisted of a huge portion of perfectly cooked scrambled eggs, nice and crispy hash browns, and a few tasty sausages. After this wonderful massive meal, I didn't need much for the rest of the day. My companion liked her ample hot oatmeal ($10.50) and English Breakfast Tea ($4). The customer service is terrible! The waiters are rude and impolite! You have to wait a very long time for food. And the quality of the food is disgusting! They don't know how to cook a steak in this place! Instead of medium well, they brought me a steak - medium rare! My wife was brought a salad with old, rotten greens! We refused such disgusting service and asked for a refund of everything we ordered because it was cooked terribly! We received an especially disgusting attitude from the manager of this place. When he heard that we didn't want to eat there and were asking for a refund, he started taking everything from the table with a displeased face and then told us - "Don't come back!" We explained that the lattes did not taste fresh, the meat had very little flavor, and the steak was not cooked as requested. You know it's good when there's a line and a good half hour or so wait for a table. Only downfall when putting your name down, they don't take your number to call you if you're walking around. You would have to be pretty much there to hear your name called for your table. Otherwise, the menu does caters to loads of breakfast which I believe is served all day. Lunch menu does have all your classic dishes as well. I don't think there's a liquor license as there was no alcohol on the menu. Service was great, friendly staff. Coffee top up was always handy and constantly refreshing your cup. The omelette was great, portion wise was pretty big. Served with hash brown and either toast or pancakes. I knew this was going to be an issue when you can replace toast for cakes. Most places don't do that. They might sub cakes for Toast and Potatoes, but never just toast. That means the pancakes are as cheap as 2 slices of bread. The selling point for this place is location. It's near the beach and the patio* has a small ocean view. The pancakes here are not worth naming your restaurant after them. The salad was served with old, wilted salad mix that appeared spoiled, and the steak we ordered medium-well arrived closer to medium-rare and was very bland. What bothered us most was how the situation was handled. When we politely brought these issues to the waiter's attention, the manager came over. After we showed him the salad and explained the problems with the food, his response was simply, "That happens," instead of apologizing or trying to make things right. At that point, we asked for a refund and decided to leave. Rather than handling the situation professionally, the manager told us rudely "Don't come back." Good customer service isn't about never making mistakes-it's about how you handle them. We are always happy to spend good money on good food and a good experience, but this was neither.
