I ordered the french onion soup and the Chinese chicken salad. The salad was underdressed. The chicken was dry. The soup, however, was really good. Apparently this is a 24 hours restaurant. I assumed it was one of those touristy spots with crappy, greasy, deep-fried food. But you know what? I was wrong. Started with a random bathroom trip to this restaurant after a walk on the beach, which gave me a glimpse into the cozy interior. That small peek convinced me to give it a try, and on our next visit, my wife and I came back for dinner. I'm glad we did! Let's start with the positives and there are plenty! The interior of The Kettle has a warm, inviting ambiance that makes you feel right at home. The service was excellent, with attentive staff who made sure we had everything we needed and the food was really good to my surprise. I ordered the chicken piccata, and it was fantastic, perfectly cooked with just the right balance of lemon sauce and capers. My wife, who doesn't usually enjoy burgers, was raving about their Kettle Burger. I tried it too, and I have to agree - it's one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. In fact, when I was put on bed rest with our first child and my husband was out of town, I had a craving for one of their delicious honey bran muffins and hobbled down our nearby walk street to get one! Their honey bran muffins are outrageously good- they are not those gross, cold bran muffins with raisins that you find at grocery stores. We were in town recently with our now 24 year-old daughter and there was no way were going to miss going to The Kettle while we were there! We came here for lunch on a beautiful day and were seated at one of my favorite places there- an outdoor table where I could see the ocean. Service bad; food worse. We were here on a chilly weekday morning. It wasn't crowded so there was no excuse for our waiter being impossible to find after our order was delivered. He acted like he was being forced to work there. They give you muffins and orange juice with all breakfasts. Which would be nice but the muffins weren't good and the orange juice was undrinkable. I have an intolerance to garlic and onion and asked the waiter if the potatoes were seasoned with any form of garlic and onion. He said no. He was incorrect; there was onion powder in the seasoning. I only had a few bites before I realized but I was still sick afterwards. One of our party asked for bacon very well done, nearly burnt was fine. She got undercooked bacon. Hi, me and my boyfriend went to eat and actually finished 2 minutes ago. I've been going to the kettle ever since I was little, and as a college student I've never received such horrible service than today. After a long day, we just wanted a late lunch and to not be rushed, however, our server Susan J made sure to give us the boxes and check about 10 minutes after our food was out. Not only that, but decided to leave before I could finish my sentence when asking about ranch for my onion rings . I came here around 8:30 pm during the week to meet a friend and we didn't have to wait at all to get seated. We also found parking very close and very easily, which I'm sure is a vastly different experience from normal. The location is right in the heart of the main stretch of Manhattan Beach, so I would definitely expect difficult parking and very busy streets if you're going at any other time of day. We both got the French onion soup - mostly because it is infamous but also because I am an absolute sucker for a good French onion soup. We also got some garlic fries to split. I would absolutely skip the garlic fries if I come here again (too much sauce and very fake garlic-y taste was too much more me). It has a great location right downtown on the corner and they have a ton of seating options, both indoor and out. I love the design of the restaurant. It looks kind of like a mountain cabin in the middle of the city. They don't have a dedicated parking lot, but there is a lot of metered street parking and pay lots close by. We had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated for a Saturday morning brunch, but the wait was worth it. Our server was very polite and our food items came out quickly however, I will admit they were slow with the drink refills. The menu is not very large, but it has a ton of great classics on it. Eggs Benedict is my favorite breakfast dish so I was really pleased to see that they have many different Benedicts on the menu. I also love how their breakfasts come with a side juice because that's one of my favorite things to have at breakfast. For my first visit I chose the Crabcake Benedict and thought it was fantastic. The crabcakes are truly great and I loved every bit of it. I did not like the house potatoes side, there was not very many of them, nor was it as good as hashbrowns. Very disappointing experience! Went for breakfast with my one year old daughter. We got sat at the counter right away which was perfect. It took our server (Monica) a while to come greet us, and when she did she appeared annoyed and was not friendly at all. Once our food came, Monica never checked on us nor did she offer a refill on coffee. As we were eating, she walked by and dropped off the check without saying anything and walked away. Have always ordered the Chicken Piccata, ordered it again this time sent it back because it was sour and chicken had a foul fishy smelling odor. Being parked on the corner of Highland and Manhattan Beach Blvd since 1973, The Kettle is one of the Last Bastions of Freedom that defends the character of Manhattan Beach from becoming Beverly Hills. The amount of memories it has given me through time is endless: Eating with friends after school on half day Fridays, seeing Pau Gasol here in 2010, coming post prom night at 3am with our group of 20+, gathering here when someone in our group chat was down bad about a girl to regroup and talk it out, coming here fresh off the plane from LAX otw home from college to meet with your high school buddies to catch up, etc. The Kettle acts as sort of an Independence Hall for Manhattan Beach. When I was a chubby 12 year old kid without a care in the world, the spinach artichoke dip with piping hot pita bread on the side was there for me. When I was 17 and got my heart shattered into a million pieces, the chicken breast with scrambled egg whites with broccoli instead of potatoes was there for me. Now, a 27 year old BEAST, the chicken breast with scrambled egg whites with steak fries instead of potatoes and a Bran Muffin is there for me. Their Bran Muffin is actually undefeated, a spiritual experience really. The Kettle has seen me in every step of my evolution, and I know most, if not all, Manhattan Beach Lifers can say the same.
