I as driving on the 10 westbound when I saw a billboard for The Hat, and let's just say they had me at "pastrami". I immediately took a detour from where I was headed for a quick lunch. The first thing you notice when pulling up to the Upland location is the old school feel. Once inside, the vibe is very 50s/60s with their color motif. I ordered their world famous pastrami dip, "small" fries, and a soda. And despite the lunch crowd, the order was filled at breakneck speed - which left me extremely impressed so far. The pastrami dip itself was soft but not even close to the point of falling apart; the au jus is magical with the fatty pastrami. With a bit of mustard and pickle, the sandwich was just right. The small order of fries here were meant to be shared among 2 or 3 people - I barely put a dent in them by the end of the meal. Next time, I am bringing a friend. Every time I come to my hometown of Upland, I must go to The Hat! I went today with my dad. We got our usual, the Pastrami Dip and the pastrami chili cheese fries. They are HUGE and we barely put a dent in them! I forgot to ask for extra mustard, so it's my fault that the sandwich was a bit on the dry side. The staff are mostly friendly, but they are all very helpful and provide excellent service. I can't wait for my next visit to Upland! Went out of my way to try this place because the reviews. I ordered the pastrami sandwich and it was ready in less than 5 mins. Roughly 10 dollars and the cashier suggested the hot mustard. Tasted great but I ordered to use relish and horseradish! It was a pretty good price. Looks like the price went up a bit (looking at the menu price that says like 7 something). Still a good deal. Did not try anything else. Lots of condiments to try and staff was very helpful and quick! Parking was amazing. Basically an empty lot. I'm giving this place a full 5 because it's good for what it is not because it's some fancy 200 dollar per meal high end restaurant. I got the pastrami burger and a "small" fry. The burger was great, it is of course pricier than the rest but they didnt skimp on the pastrami it was really loaded in there. I'm amazed I actually finished the burger and most of the fries but I'm pretty sure towards the end I was just forcing it because it tasted good. The fries are your basic large cut fries but they go so well with the pastrami i may have to try some pastrami covered chili fries next time. The small fry was probably like a pound of fries, so no complaints there, just curious how big the large actually is. Due to covid, they are only doing thrive thru. No walk in. The line for the drive thru is extremely long (about 30 minutes plus). Great pastrami sandwiches--albeit greasy. We all expect that grease and duping juice to run down our chins. That said they do have other things on the menu. My favorite is the hot dog--- grilled weiner, mustard and I personally ask for grated cheese. Yummy. Steak sandwich is as expected but might do better with some of that bread "gutted" out-- so as to be able to better taste the meat, tomato, and lettuce all served up with a smear of mayonnaise. I've always meant to try something else, but there's something about that World Famous Pastrami sign that just sucks me in every time. If you eat big, this is the place to be. However in the interest of accuracy in my reviews (I'm a stickler for things like that. And good grammer also! ;) I checked and found out that the original The Hat was the Alhambra location. Hands down best chili cheese fries! I usually get an order and end up sharing it with a group of friends. My bf went ahead and ordered the pastrami which was full of meaty goodness. He said the pastrami was thinly sliced which was still pretty good considering pastrami generally has thicker slices. So as I was reading the Pastrami thread, I had the craving to get some chili cheese fries with pastrami on top. The food is good and portions are huge. I usually can't finish the whole thing. I would eat 1/2 of it and save the rest for tomorrow. The Hat in Upland is open until 1AM during the weekdays which is nice. It's close to where I live, and open late nights.
